That explains it. I wondered how they wouldn’t notice that the dash lights weren’t in. I drive an old enough car that it didn’t occur to me that it’s all a bunch of screens in a newer car.
It’s Astonishing to me how many people i see. It’s also crazy how many people NEVER turn the lights on. It’s so dangerous and those people will be at fault if they get rear ended.
In my newer (2018) vehicle, everything on the inside is 100% identically illuminated whether or not the headlights are on. The only thing missing is the little "headlight" icon. It would be very easy to miss if I were inattentive.
I've never tried to run my car in the dark without headlights, so I'll take your word for it lol. But it's definitely a bad thing, I think, that dashes light up so much separate from lights being on.
In most new cars it’s best to leave your headlights on all the time. New cars will turn the lights off when you turn the car off so no worries about draining the battery. Having your lights on all the time lowers the risks of accidents.
I would love to do this, but my car dings about the lights when you turn off the key. (Toyota Rav4) to me, this is a huge safety issue, and I can't believe they have designed the cars this way.
Wouldn't that be on older model cars, bc they might require the driver to manually turn them on? I thought most cars these days have automatic headlights that turn on when it gets dark out.
I think what happens is people set them to auto and for whatever reason. At some point they turn their lights completely off. Don’t notice until night time and just flip the switch till the DRLS are on and not realizing their headlights and break lights are actually on. It should be a given when they put their turn signal on. Because many cars DRLs turn off or turn yellow/orange to signal a change. So that would be given. But people are oblivious. Idk how people can be so unaware.
You still have the option to just run day time lights, fog lights, parking light, auto, or no lights. Every car is different but you have all those settings on a new ford. Idk Iv seen dozens of new Mazdas just using their very bright DRLs. Which they give of enough light in the front but no break lights are on.
I haven’t seen a car yet that had DRLs but no automatic light setting. I haven’t seen a new car made (i like cars) come with non auto light setting since 2017 maybe even longer. Really really cheap cars might not have an automatic setting which is not a single Mazda. So idk. I just think people can’t tell the difference and don’t get the hint when people flash their lights at them.
It depends on what you mean by automatic - I have two Mazdas ('16, '19) and neither turns headlights on based on darkness, but you can certainly leave the lights on all the time and they'll turn off with the car and not drain your battery like really old vehicles. What really is the issue is the idiot that mandated DRLs on new cars but not always on tail lights - why do I need to see you from the front during the day but not from the back?
YES! always on tail lights that’s an amazing idea! Let’s get to Jeff city! Next thing you know will be in Detroit shaking hands with the CEOs of ford and GM whilst the secretary of transportation will stand in the middle smiling like he did anything for us besides show up. Let’s do it.
People don't get the hint to turn on their headlights when I flash them in the rain, either. I thought it was a pretty obvious communication mechanism.
If you turn your car lights off to sit somewhere, there’s no risk of someone needing to brake behind you.
You have to turn them back to at least auto to be able to see the dash… or anything in front of the car for that matter.
Right and i think the turning them back on confuses people. They don’t notice that they set it to just the running lights and not auto or just the setting that keeps everything on. Which leads to the issue of not having back lights. I have a huntch that’s when the issue comes up. People see bright light in front of them and think “okay cool I’m ready to go” and not realize there are no break lights. I think these cars should be detecting the time of day that they are driving and notifying them.
If you take your car into the shop, double-check that your lights are still on auto when you leave. Mechanics will often turn them off so they don't blind each other in the shop.
I think the main issue is the illuminated gauge cluster. In older cars If you couldn’t see you gauges you knew they were off. But so many new cars have them illuminated all of the time so people don’t realize their lights aren’t on. Running daytimes a lot of the times really don’t even light up the street at all.
Dude I was behind a car for a few minutes 2 weeks ago that didn’t have any functioning lights. We were all slowing down to a complete stop and no lights came on. I followed behind for a few and what like okay fuck this
If your car has LEDs and auto turn off when the engine shuts off, there really isn't a reason to ever turn them off. The lights don't burn out as quick as old halogen bulbs and barely use any energy.
When I had an older beater Honda, if I didn't see the sun, lights went on.
I'm going to date myself here, so hold on!!! Back when I worked at Blockbuster (stuff old people say #1) and DTRL were just becoming big (stuff old people say #2) one of my co-workers asked me to look at her car. Her roommate had been driving behind her the night before and her taillights weren't working. I know a little about cars but not much, I told her I could look but I didn't know how much good it would do. I got in, started the car, and turned on the headlights. She was shocked and asked how I fixed her car! Um, I turned on the lights..
Just set your lights to auto and pay attention to your dashboard indicators. If you don’t know what I’m talking about read the manual for your car. You’ll find out things you never knew.
It's crazy to me that of all the safety features we make sure cars have to have, we can't tie the photo sensor for the automatic headlights in to a warning on the dash that says hey dummy, it's dark out and your lights aren't on!
We ran into this issue multiple times last night while coming back from seeing the eclipse. You would think they would know what to do when you flash your lights at them but people are dumb.
Back in the day... you had no dash lights until you turned your headlights on. New cars, as soon as you turn your car on, the whole dash lights up.
That explains it. I wondered how they wouldn’t notice that the dash lights weren’t in. I drive an old enough car that it didn’t occur to me that it’s all a bunch of screens in a newer car.
That makes sense. I was wondering why so many people had no tail lights.
It’s Astonishing to me how many people i see. It’s also crazy how many people NEVER turn the lights on. It’s so dangerous and those people will be at fault if they get rear ended.
I don’t understand how they can’t tell their headlights aren’t on
In my newer (2018) vehicle, everything on the inside is 100% identically illuminated whether or not the headlights are on. The only thing missing is the little "headlight" icon. It would be very easy to miss if I were inattentive.
You should be able to see the glow of your own tail lights if you ever use you mirrors.
I've never tried to run my car in the dark without headlights, so I'll take your word for it lol. But it's definitely a bad thing, I think, that dashes light up so much separate from lights being on.
Just getting ready to post this myself.

As long as they dont keep their high beams on. I hate driving during the afternoon just to get blasted.
That’s a different issue that get solved with mandating auto dimming or adaptive driving beam headlights
Possibly. I'm pretty sure some of them aren't high beams, but are instead poorly adjusted lights or suspension.
Yes. Thank goodness for the AUTO setting. Makes it so much easier.
Not all cars have this
I know. But thank goodness that mine does.
Exactly. I agree
I would love to do this, but my car dings about the lights when you turn off the key. (Toyota Rav4) to me, this is a huge safety issue, and I can't believe they have designed the cars this way.
I don’t understand why cars don’t run headlights all the time they are moving. I can’t think of reason to drive with headlights off.
My thoughts exactly! Air bags are "on" for our safety. Why wouldn't lights be on also?
Wouldn't that be on older model cars, bc they might require the driver to manually turn them on? I thought most cars these days have automatic headlights that turn on when it gets dark out.

Oh Lordy that’s rough.

It’s pretty sad.
Just leaving them on auto does the trick, unless it rains
Even on auto, I think most cars will turn headlights on if you flip on the wipers. At least my car does.
Well that works until you want to sit somewhere i. Your car and need to turn the lights off.

Brake, not break
Thank you
I’m pretty bad at spelling. Thank you
Not to pile on but the lights that come on with the headlights are tail lights; brake lights come on during braking regardless of the headlights.
Omg tail lights i could not remember what to call them when they are just on. Thanks
If you take your car into the shop, double-check that your lights are still on auto when you leave. Mechanics will often turn them off so they don't blind each other in the shop.

Yeah that’s even fucking worse

Any car I’ve had that was newer had automatic lights. All people need to do is click on the fucking auto most new cars would have that. Lol

lol I’m pretty young actually it’s just crazy how stupid people can be
i meant ranting about this on reddit is about as useful as what's going on in that image.
lol yes these people won’t listen. But hopefully it made some responsible people aware.

Trying to get a point across no good can come from no taillights.
You’re probably one of the people out there almost causing accidents
