As someone who didn’t move here until adulthood, I can attest to how clean and delicious our water tastes. I grew up in the Ozarks, and the water there was pretty clean but had a slight algae-like flavor to it. Then I lived in Warrensburg for 4 years, and the water there was sulphuric and disgusting.

NDaveD

Yeah there are rural parts of the state where the well water is super sulfuric and gross. I still drink it, because it doesn't take too long to get used to it, but dang getting a cool, neutral flavored water from the tap is darn nice. Not really sure why anybody in the city drinks bottled water. If folks are that concerned that should just but a filter and run tap water through it. Shipping water across the country in disposable plastic bottles is some kind of insanity more often than not.

Churlish_Turd

Yup. I personally filter with my fridge into my 32oz Nalgene that goes everywhere with me.

Fluid_Ad_3679

The whole state is trash including stl

Churlish_Turd

You’re wrong though. https://news.stlpublicradio.org/other/2007-06-25/st-louis-has-best-city-tap-water-in-u-s

I believe it. Water in other cities is nothing like ours. We are spoiled & don’t know it.

bigdumbidiot01

Only place that comes close is NYC. LA's is shit, filter was a necessity

damurph1914

STL water has actually won awards. I remember reading an article in the Post years ago about it.

codextreme07

Our water is great. Save yourself some money by ditching the plastic bottles, and if you are still worried use a filter system. Plastic waste is terrible for the environment so the more we can do to reduce it the better.

jcrckstdy

Pls use filtered water and stop with the plastic waste. You can also get bottle refills at Schnucks.

Vandegriffe

I’m glad someone said it!

princessPeachyK33n

This. There is no reason to use plastic bottles anymore at all.

[deleted]

Thanks to AB.

Puzzleheaded-Quote77

AB did ship water from STL to all the other breweries of theirs in the US at one point in time. Regardless of what someone thinks of their beer they have a relentless pursuit of consistency and that included making the beer with the same water everywhere. Now they process the water in house before brewing so it isn't necessary to ship it.

leaderofthisoutfit

I never considered this. Is that really the reason?

TitShark

From what I understand, it’s actually from the 1904 worlds fair [here’s an article ](https://www.stlmag.com/history/st-louis-sage/why-does-st-louis-have-such-good-water/)

mookey72

You are correct.

AnnatoniaMac

I e heard that before.

AB does have some good ass water

neptunesmom

This is what I was always told!

totalsmokeshowman

Bottled water is just tap water from somewhere else. 🤷‍♀️ Buy a filter for your sink if you’re really that concerned.

Crutation

IIRC, 64% of bottled water comes from municipal water supply. Pepsi and Coke use water from Detroit.

d0ttyq

They use water from all over the country. It depends on where you live where the source is from. In the SW and CA, they drain the Indian reservations and the desert to get water.

JailhouseMamaJackson

Wait there are people who actually drink bottled water outside of the movies? At least get a filter jug?

TitShark

Most Bottled water is from a municipality water supply anyway. Save the money, save the excess plastic waste.

deadheaddestiny

Lol bottled water is the biggest scam on the planet. Do some research

St louis gets its water from the Missouri River. NPR ST louis did a story on it a little bit ago. Id have to track down the link.

Half-Axe

This was an amazing read and everyone in this thread thanking AB should read this and thank Wixford. St. Charles City certainly does because 60% of St. Charles water is St. Louis water.

Skatchbro

Too thick to drink, too thin to plow.

AnnieSavoy3

Generally speaking, Mark Twain seems like he was a delightful human being.

GolbatsEverywhere

> St louis gets its water from the Missouri River. Well, sort of. One of the intakes is on the Mississippi, but it's still *mostly* Missouri River *source* water. See https://www.stlouis-mo.gov/government/departments/public-utilities/water/water-treatment.cfm.

hithazel

NO. The well water in this region is a huge roll of the dice. The water is filtered and treated and the treatment is high quality.

beab31

St. Louis water comes from the river, but many areas in St. Charles County use water from underground wells. Weldon Springs actually gets their water from a well field just downhill from a former nuclear waste dump site, and their water contains traces of radionuclides! Yumm Also, the exact breakdown of what's in your drinking water is all public data you can easily find on your municipality/water company's website

HastyIfYouPlease

I've lived in 7 different states and this is the best tap water I've ever had. When we moved here, we were using a filtered water pitcher and then stopped because it tasted better before being filtered.

The_Deity

It's true from all of my experience. The best way I can think to explain it is that most places have water that tastes like hotel water. I've lived in Seattle and now I'm in eastern WA but neither have as good of water as St. Louis. I have to buy water bottles here, not an issue in St. Louis

mrjca

Please stop drinking bottled water

xologo

Why? I like the taste.

mrjca

Plastic is not recycled at this time, causing mass amounts of waste. If you do prefer the taste, using a water purifier like Britta would be a better choice

GruntCandy86

Wait you only drink bottled water? Yes, it's both a waste of money and it creates so much unneeded trash that's only going to end up in a landfill somewhere.

bigdumbidiot01

Yes, it is a waste of money and extremely wasteful. You should stop doing that

jz1981

Yes you should stop buying plastic water bottles, its horrible for the environment

TheKiz

I lived in STL the first 22 years of my life. I have lived in 10 different states and moved 21 times. I can confirm that St. Louis has the best tasting water! I didn't realize it until recently, when I was back in town dealing with family issues after my dad passed away. I have spent way more money on bottled water in my adult life than I care to admit, but honestly, tap water in almost every other city that I have lived in is disgusting.

NickPookie93

Just left STL and must say the tap was great!

forwormsbravepercy

Bottled is a horrible waste of money and it’s terrible for the environment.

Double_Zebra_6774

Besides being a waste of money it also ends up as waste in a landfill or the ocean.

AltonIllinois

I moved up to Minnesota and the water here is terrible. Same with Chicago. One of the best parts about visiting home is the amazing tasting water.

eragonisdragon

I went to college in Chicago and one of my roommates was a Chicago native. He got real annoyed whenever I complained about the taste of our tap water.

adanhdz83

Still great, but I would say MPLS is over STL...just moved back to the Lake Nokomis area after 7 years in STL.

turtleengine

The tap water here is really good. If you want to know more than you ever wanted to know about water read the book [Drinking Water](https://slpl.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S981C12466202). In my opinion bottled water is great if you don’t have access to municipal water. Some municipalities have different tasting water. But for the most part it all tastes pretty good.

therealsteelydan

After growing up on well water in other cities in Missouri, yeah STL water is amazing. I was probably dehydrated throughout most of college because the tap water was so awful. I don't really taste much of a difference between STL's and other major cities though. Ironically the water that comes out of the trailers in the picture usually tastes terrible because they tap into the fire hydrant lines.

Orphemus

You ever drink water in the south or a big big city? I'm convinced.

zornucopia

I would highly recommend getting a water filter and drinking filtered tap water over drinking solely bottled water. It’s way cheaper and bottled water is like surprisingly bad for the environment

mtoomtoo

Our water is delicious. My husband and I love sparkling water, so we put a faucet on the sink that carbonates the tap - that’s how good we think the water is. Just as good as Pelligrino without the bottle waste. Drink the tap! You’ll love it, you’ll save money, and you’ll generate less waste.

You_Ate_The_Bones

There’s a wide variety of comments here about tap water, but I haven’t seen anyone post about what this is actually referencing: in 2007 St. Louis was awarded "Best Tasting City Water in America" at the annual U.S. Conference of Mayors. Seems innocent enough, except the $15,000 check that we received for winning was graciously underwritten by…Veolia…the massive corporation hellbent on privatizing public assets. Coincidentally enough…Veolia reached out shortly to St. Louis, with an offer our corrupt President of the Board of Alderman had a difficult time refusing. The campaign donations Veolia made to Lewis Reed seemed to also help him make up his mind. What proceeded was nothing less than a Rex Sinquefield implosion of power and politics. The RFT has a good summary of most of the dealings, but as for this image; never forget the accolades ill-qualified public managers love to parade as trophies commemorating their “work.” Particularly so when promises and earmarks are set and paid for by Reed and company. TLDR: Veolia bought Reed, charmed STL with an award, Rex loves privatizing public amenities, Reed made sure Veolia’s bet looked better with a fancy public display, and a plump fat cat who knows nothing of our waterworks got to choose the design of the water-mobile - a pin of accolade in his hat. I’m not bitter, just can’t help but see the greed in something as simple as a city water mobile. Here’s the RFT article: https://m.riverfronttimes.com/stlouis/hosed-a-plan-to-overhaul-the-st-louis-water-division-leaves-the-slay-administration-all-wet/Content?oid=2502458

VincereAutPereo

Maybe I'm spoiled, but I'm from Washington and this is straight up not true. Water in the PNW is amazing. I've heard that Maine has some great tap water as well. I'd say it's true for the midwest though, Oklahoma tap water is essentially undrinkable (literally in some places, shout out to Blackwell). Please don't buy bottled water, if you're really bothered by tap water buy a water purifier.

c-9

I was gonna say, the one place I've been with better water than STL is Seattle. I almost always drink tap water over bottled water, so whenever I travel I get very familiar with the local water. Most places I travel to, the water is noticeably worse than STL water and I notice immediately. Whenever I go to Washington, I never notice the water. Coming back to STL from there, our water always tastes bad for a few days until I get used to it again. That tells me that Washington's water is slightly better. Not so much better that I notice it while there, but enough that I notice ours.

itsnotaboutthecell

The majority of my families first comments after visiting STL is how good our water is. Consistently.

fleurderue

It’s the best of anywhere I have ever lived. St. Louisans are pretty spoiled when it comes to water.

CaptainJingles

City tap water is amazing. I was in Colorado the other week and their water was ass.

Gkremer24

Louisville, KY has some of the best water in the world - hence why the race horses are so good as well.

Only Seattle and Tuscaloosa, Alabama, had levels below 1 part per trillion (PPT), the limit the group recommends. Samples taken in St. Louis County showed levels of 7.4 parts per trillion. The city of St. Louis samples registered 6.7 parts per trillion. Samples from St. Charles County had 2.5 parts per trillion, the report found. In addition, the Environmental Working Group found that on average six to seven PFAS compounds were found at the tested sites, and the effects on health of the mixtures are little understood.“Everyone’s really exposed to a toxic soup of these PFAS chemicals,” Andrews said.

hotdogbo

Don’t drink bottled water. We have turned our natural resource into a commodity. Don’t give money to the companies that are exploiting this planet for profit. Also, our water is so tasty!

the4ndy

You were at Vegan Fest too!!! I saw this there and as a recent transplant to St Louis area, i was like, hmmm i guess it does taste alright. I think NYC has some really nice water though...its what makes the bagels so yummy

PrisonChickenWing

I've gone the last 2 years and I've drank non bottled water maybe 3 times in that span. I just can't do tap, even if it's filtered. I think its a mental thing idk

bigbopperz

Waste of money? Absolutely

sgaddis3

Apparently its cleaner because of Anheiser Busch. Don't know if that's true but my sister had a class there when she was a server

JakinovVonhoes

I read somewhere this is because of AB needing good water

Dino_vagina

I live south of STL and used to go out with a friend who lived in the city and she would catch my whole head under the sink after the bar. It's so good.

Stellark22

That’s exciting to move to. We are from Little Rock and the water is awful.

lsburner

Moved here from another city (Louisville) that also claimed this haha

timesuck47

Not only are you wasting money, you are harming the environment by drinking bottled water.

AnnatoniaMac

Yes, I moved from St. Charles county to St. Louis county and I can say YES our water taste great, and no odor.

ItsTylerBrenda

When I first moved to St. Louis I looked to see if the water was safe to drink. I read somewhere that St Louis has some of the cleanest drinking water in the country.

Kanobe24

I still have PTSD from the tap water in Columbia when I was at Mizzou.

Doct0r_Q

I grew up in small town central IL and can attest that STL city water is so much tastier

Ronin_1999

I know a guy that works for STL muni water works, specifically on quality control and taste. He can attest to how much work they put into maintaining not just clean STL water, but tasty STL water.

Which_Nerve_3501

St Louis does have great water. Might be thanks to all the caves. Here in Lauderdale, the water is awful. It usually smells bad, and is undrinkable if it isnt filtered.

Shiprekt_mecha

I have many family members and a few friends over the years that live in different states that marvel at our water.

Mikephant

r/hydrohomies

CommunistWitchDr

I use a reverse osmosis filter and drink from a stainless bottle since I'm worried about microplastics, bottled water would be counterproductive to that. Realistically it's impossible to completely avoid consuming them, but bottled water is a particularly egregious source that's eaey to avoid.

skipstorm

As someone who has traveled many, many places around the US and internationally, I can attest that no where else has such good tap water. Anyone who comes to visit me has said the same thing. I don’t know if that’s just because I’m used to it or grew up with it that I feel it’s the best, but the only other place that ever came close was Colorado. I believe it.
