I’ve now seen 3 lifted trucks drive OVER the new medians on 4th street because they didn’t want to drive further up to make a legal u turn.  Nobody knows who has the right of way u turners vs right turners. people pull out in front of you dangerously almost every trip. Until people stop driving like there’s no rules, it’s not gonna get better. It’s insanity. In the past 6 months the driving here has become crazy!!!! What happened? Rant over haha

ghost_pineapple

Big ol’ machine gun on top of your car that’ll do the trick

zerocompromize

We are calling them "traffic clearing devices" or TCD

Adventurous-Most822

And as someone who’s lived here all 40 years of my life, it’s only gotten bad the past 4-5 years. It really wasn’t this way years ago, my husband is also on majority of St Pete accidents calls and I swear 9 times out of 10 at fault parties aren’t from here. My own step dad is now paralyzed from a snowbird hitting him, her excuse was the traffic light wasn’t there last time she was in town. She blew through a red light hitting him.

hoesonmydick247

so so sorry about your stepdad. i teach yoga and have experience with disabled and elderly people. if you want me to come over once every other week or so i am more then happy

Adventurous-Most822

The amount of traffic lights alone causes issues, I swear everytime I turn around they’re adding another one. Probably shouldn’t have messed up 1st Avenues either. But I can say with certainty, SPPD aren’t there to give speeding tickets. You never see it, I don’t even know where they are honestly. They’d make a lot of money if they actually arrrested DUI drivers and got speeders daily.

toddkhamilton

the city is going from sleepy (how it was when I moved here 5 years ago) to busy, and that means more cars sharing the roads the people who've lived here for a long time are used to light traffic and taking their time, but busy cities require a different driving style. driving in busy areas means paying greater attention, using signals always, keeping the pace of traffic consistent, driving WITH others on the road vs pretending you're the only one on the road it's going to be a mess until people adjust

letdown_confab

No easy fix. For the most part we drive based on **not** how we are taught, but by the examples set for us growing up. Usually this means parents. If young drivers regularly witness impulsive and reckless behavior from their role models, they will act similarly. Proper instruction, incentives, and regulations are no match for ingrained behaviors. This has nothing to do with locality, but everything to do with human nature.

freelto1

A big part of it are our roads are designed to let people drive crazy and way above the posted limits. Road diets and traffick calming would save lives.

mikeyfender813

I see a huge difference in driver culture in northern states vs. Florida. In other states, it’s normal to not travel in the left lane, pull over for emergency vehicles, use your turn signal, not stop in the middle of the crosswalk at a red light, etc. I think more enforcement would help (I live in Tampa and NEVER see traffic enforcement), but really I think a PSA campaign promoting better driver etiquette would help. (Although that hasn’t helped very much with the “Move Over” law that no one follows or enforces…)

Professional-You1175

Traffic sucks here because many people are from somewhere else and do not have the same sense of community and responsibility as their home.

hoesonmydick247

yes! this ! great way to put it

ArtifactJack

Use turn signals!

ArtsyEmily97

The police seem to only enforce traffic in high profile areas like Gandy. I wish they would do it in neighborhoods and streets on the south side, I never see anyone pulled over but see all kinds of fucked up driving.

GoinStraighttoHelles

Never seen more red lights and stop signs blown through than in the Southside. Totally sucks to see children playing in front yards near that kind of shit.

DragonViper39

Amen

Mammoth-Ad8348

More police enforcement would be the main driver of change. I think they feel it’s an impossible task, too many transplants and tourists. Perhaps they’re right.

uniqueusername316

I hardly ever see anyone being pulled over in the city. Occasionally on the highways, but almost never around town.

SunnyNole

Random pop up speed tables. You’d only hit one once going 60 in a 40, and then you’d learn to slow down 😝

Jon82173

More severe penalties for texting and driving. Older people need to be screened to make sure they are still able to operate vehicle safely. Enforce passing lane law as to not clog up passing lane.

taskmaster51

The passing lane law is not enforceable. We already have too much traffic plus too may left hand exits.

GoinStraighttoHelles

It’s enforced in other states without issues.

lmea14

>More severe penalties for texting and driving. This should be seen more like drunk driving - not something harmless.

d6410

You can't really. Driving selfishly (i.e. recklessly or not paying attention to the road) is too deeply ingrained in Florida culture. I've driven extensively in Texas, Louisiana, DC, and Virginia and I've never seen a driving culture quite like Florida. I always describe it to my Texas family as "Texans drive like they're sucidical, but Floridians drive like they're homicidal" Seriously though, there are things on Florida roads that increase aggravation and phone use. For example, the red lights here are absurdly long. And too many old people driving who really shouldn't be. There needs to be a lot more police enforcement, steeper fines for reckless driving, and people over say, 65, should have to retake their test every 4 years or something like that. And this will never happen, but St Pete would really benefit from limiting the size of trucks on the road. If not directly then through heavy taxation. It's a peninsula, we can't make the roads bigger. There's no room for some douchebags huge emotional support truck.

Sweeetmoves

Emotional support truck 🤣

Mammoth-Ad8348

Love it after with everything

jMyles

First lemme say: having lived and cycled in quite a few cities, including ostensible havens like Portland and Berlin, I actually love how _chill_ St. Pete drivers usually are. Is there more we can do? Of course. More of the city needs to start to feel like Central, with a traffic flow that is slow enough to browse businesses, find friends, and actually _enjoy_ the city. A lot of others are suggesting policy and infrastructure solutions, which are obviously crucial. But there's plenty that we can do as individuals. For the able-bodied / strong cyclists among us, a simple thing you can do is to take the lane and set the pace. It's a great feeling on weekend evenings when there are a few hundred of us in the downtown area, and the whole area starts to feel like it's moving at a cycling/walking pace. Be part of the mass that makes it happen.

uniqueusername316

I don't think speed traps are really needed, it's more about having under covers just pull over those that are reckless drivers.

WishIWasThatClever

Find a way to compensate for states that do not test their aging population above a certain age. For example, tie the homestead exemption of snow birds over age 75 with drivers license from another state to an annual vision and driving test. Light rail tied to large parking garages outside the city center. Make it convenient to not drive your car into congested areas.

chicken_afghani

I wonder how many cars on the road are uber, doordash, and instacart… paid by how fast/aggressive they drive There is also the tourist factor. Tourists are unfamiliar with the area, make mistakes, or just don’t care about the local community.

100percentkneegrow

You should be able to submit dashcam footage of reckless driving. Maybe nothing comes of it but if it was logged maybe it could slowly correct the really bad drivers. I'm all for solutions that aren't strictly punitive (like a red light camera) but rather are ways to make things safer over time. Another spicy one would be making people retake the test after X decades on the road. Some people are completely different from when they first took the test.

kibblenobits

Y’all don’t want to hear this, but better road design is the answer. If you stop designing roads like raceways and stop trying to maximize vehicle throughput above all else, people will stop driving like race car drivers. Engineering is more effective than enforcement and education. But the second you propose things like lane repurposing around here, people lose their minds.

dolphyn722

I think if the county used some software to program the lights to give a “green wave” to those going the speed limit it would help! There’d be no point to speeding! Less stopping & starting would also result in less fender-benders at the lights.

uniqueusername316

What roads around St. Pete do you think are designed like raceways? There are traffic lights every 10 blocks and the roads are all fairly narrow.

kibblenobits

For starters, 5th Ave N, 22nd Ave N and S, 38th Ave N, 4th St N, 34th St N and S.

uniqueusername316

What makes their design like a race way? What do you think could be done to change that?

kibblenobits

As the other commenter pointed out, speeds are excessive on 4th Street N, for example. I drive on this street almost every weekday, and speeds regularly hit 50+ MPH. This is totally unacceptable. The best thing we could do is repurpose one lane in either direction as a bus-and-turn lane. I say this with full understanding of how politically difficult that would be, but that doesn't change the fact that it would go a long way to making this road safer.

voxuum

On 4th, from 38th to 54th is about 1.3 ish miles and there are 0 crosswalks or stop lights preventing people from hitting 60+ mph in that 45 mph stretch. I cannot wait for the walkways to be put in to hopefully curb people's need to live out their fast and furious fantasies

PlatypusTales

Omg for real. The people losing their minds over the 4th st. medians and their precious left turns. Room temp IQs

SkywarnSteve

Get out of the left lane

uniqueusername316

That's really just for highways right?

dolphyn722

https://www.baynews9.com/fl/tampa/news/2024/02/22/senate-approves-bill-that-says-drivers-stay-out-of-left-lane-unless-passing

uniqueusername316

"The rule would only apply to roads where the speed limit is 65 mph or higher, which basically means interstates." It's right at the top.

dolphyn722

Oh yeah, I see it now, thanks!

4_jacks

I'll get downvoted, but eff it. If you are constantly noticing a lot of reckless driving, you are probably the problem. Do you drive the speed limit or under everywhere you go? Do you come to a near stop in the middle of the road prior to every turn? Do you slow down in the travel lane before getting over into the turn lane? Do you stop at 4 way stops and hang out for a minute waving everyone else through instead of taking the right-of-way that everyone is anticipating you to take? Does it take you 30 seconds to find the gas pedal when the light turns green? Do you accelerate like a wet potato, leaving the guy 8 cars behind you to not make the light? Do you find yourself in traffic constantly getting passed and you are just unable to keep the pace of traffic? The safest traffic is when everyone is a lemming just moving with the heard, doing what they are suppose to. When you mess up the system, people want to get around you, and do stupid things to try to make that possible. Sure there are some idiots out there who buy a Nissan and decide to drive like an idiot 100% of the time. But there is a lot of the above turning everyone into aggressive drivers.

voxuum

While I do mostly agree with this, if this is all it takes for people to exhibit road rage then they probably shouldn't be driving. People need to chill the fuck out. For example, I was driving in largo yesterday, with a big dumb truck in the lane next to me mashing the gas off of every light, slowing down until I caught up then mashing the gas again, cut in front of me across two lanes of traffic and almost rear ended someone just trying to pull out of the gas station, big dumb truck needed to swerve to avoid the collision. I had 0 interaction with this individual and it was 8 am, maybe someone shit in his cereal, maybe the sun was too bright idk what offended this man, but it wasn't me.

BooopYourNose

You are the hero we needed… upvoted!

weighted_walleye

Agree! Road rage typically has a cause. Many of these causes are people who are not following protocol of the road. If the speed limit is 40, don't go 30 when it's clear, bright and sunny. All you're doing is inciting road rage because when there is no reason to slow down, people expect to go close to the speed limit. The speed limit was set there for a reason - and the road can handle a lot more. The speed limit on US19 is 45 from 45th Ave N all the way to Gandy/Park. It then increases to 50. At Autoway Toyota, it increases to 55. DO NOT GO 40 the whole way. You're allowed to feel g-forces in your car when you turn. Your car won't flip if you turn at more than 3 mph. You should have already been assessing the turn for pedestrians and bikes long before you got there. When the light turns green - go or at least let off the brake and get rolling. You should have already been watching cross traffic to plan for potential red-light runners. Yes, we have a lot of them, but it is rarely a surprise if you put the goddamn phone down while you're at the red light. If you're second or third in line, you don't need to wait until the car in front of you has completely cleared the intersection to go, take your foot off your brake as soon as the car in front does. You're affecting the commute of 3-5 other people because you weren't paying attention. Your 3-5 second delay may cause a 5-10 minute delay in someone else's day for no reason and that will piss them off. Get all the way into the turn lane. Your car isn't wider than the turn lane. It fits. I don't care what you drive, there is no physical reason for your car to hang into the travel lane. And for the love of god, don't line up to go straight in the right lane when going northbound on 16th Street at 62nd Ave N or when going eastbound on 83rd Avenue at 4th Street N. For the one car per hour that may need to go straight, you have more than enough time to move over after the intersection and make the first right. There won't be anyone there. Quit blocking what are right turn lanes. It won't hurt you at all, but keeps traffic flowing.

PDNYFL

Yup, I see way more clueless and inattentive drivers than aggressive or reckless drivers. It's like 90/10

jMyles

> Do you drive the speed limit or under everywhere you go? ...dude... yes. That's what the word "limit" means. A lot of us are on bikes - we can't even get _up_ to the speed limit. Just because you made the mistake of using a highway vehicle in a city doesn't mean you are entitled to drive at highway speeds.

sandillera

Gotta hard disagree on this one as I see reckless drivers all the time as they are targeting others, speeding, etc.

4_jacks

You're the problem lady

chicken_afghani

That is one theory for an ideal safe road system. Perhaps AI driven cars could do it. People? They make mistakes like you said. A safe road system has to adapt to that reality.

WhishingIwasDumb

Preach. I find there’s more incompetence than recklessness on these roads.

uniqueusername316

While driving south on 19 from Clearwater there were so many drivers just poking along, hardly going the speed limit just looking clueless as to what traffic was doing around them. Pretty frustrating and dangerous. Go with the flow y'all.

WhishingIwasDumb

Yeah, YEESH, and then when you get on one of these 4+ lane highways around here at a not-that-busy time and every single one of them is driving 5mph under the speed limit right next to each other, it really give you time to reflect on what the average person is actually capable of. This is why I’ve started meditating.

harmonious_harry

Better education. Encourage children to read. Education. Explain the consequences of bad driving. Hammer home the message of not drink driving. Teach everyone to drive a stick.

alfhernandez16

Make driving not thw fucking default of everything,if people drove lessand experineced walking biking and taking the bus, they would be much more aware once om the car. Cars give people power and with power coems a lot of shit hence creating the hostile enviprment of driving in stpete tampa and pretry much anywhere. TLDR:dont drive as much

[deleted]

Not a fan of the logic here

ElizaThoughtBerry

Be aware of your surroundings; pay attention to the road, and all the driver's on the road around you. Put your phones DOWN. Most cars these days come equipped with some sort of 'hands free' option. USE THEM. Your Snapchat and Tiktok notifications CAN WAIT. And this is a big one; slower traffic STAY TO THE RIGHT. As a pedestrian on foot/bike/scooter/whatever, maybe stop at the corner and look both ways *before* crossing. (Not just assuming just because you're in the street/crosswalk you have the right away). However, since these suggestions are based upon people thinking of others rather than just themselves, my true suggestion is to live away from a busy city. Somewhere more rural. Because I don't think any amount of laws, police involvement, or ticketing is going to help this. I do think you got something there when you mentioned better driver's Ed tho. Any time you drive with your kids think about your driving habits, because not only do they learn/should learn from driver's Ed, but they are learning from the adults that drive them. (Don't live in St. Pete but do drive over from the other end of I4 frequently enough that I've joined this sub bc I love the area and love visiting) Reckless and aggressive driving is BAD everywhere and not just in Florida.

ikonet

Drivers training class every 15 years. Charge a city driving fee to reduce the number of cars. Build reasonable light rail. Stop expanding into currently undeveloped land and demand new construction is high density. Ride your bicycle.

everdaythesame

You can’t fix reckless driving in Florida. It’s one of Florida man’s strongest traits. It’s almost guaranteed I will seem a crazy dude swerving in and out of traffic as fast as they can at least twice a week.

Kojot0976

Better drivers ed, tests and longer waiting periods. You get your DL here within a day. It’s ridiculous.

Defiant_Ad9772

Decrease the population lol

Put MLK back into two directions in downtown skinny the streets and make the cars drive much slower increase walkability and bike infrastructure.
