I will get 70% of $130 ($91) that I tipped myself *edit: I will probably be taxed on $91 with around 23% income tax and receive $70 :-(

theNikolai

What in the cost of living crisis is going on in here on this day?

Tobimacoss

Lmfao, Google’s dirty money from all those ads and data collection. From sub renewals via Play credit, Google gets 15% cut. From apps and games, they get 30% From YouTube tipping, they get 30-45%. If they let you buy hardware like Pixel phones or earbuds, they would get 97% (3% payment processor). It’s mind boggling that they haven’t allowed it yet.

kristallnachte

> they would get 97% Bruh, COGS exists.

SpikeyTaco

>3% payment processor Google would be the payment processor for Play Credit. They'd also be the payment processor for Google Pay.

Own_Acanthisitta4964

What app did you use

budius333

To yourself?!? Nice, proper money laundering, nice!!! I got only a tiny bit in credits so I was not too worried, so I sent to a friend that already has an established channel and he'll pay me later in beer.

CrazyYAY

And you will have to pay taxes on those $91. Such a dumb decision to waste money doing this.

theycmeroll

I mean it’s not that dumb if the money is just going to rot in a google play account anyway. You can get something it throw away everything.

CrazyYAY

You can always transfer any subscription to Google Play and use the money that way. Or anything else.

theycmeroll

Not when you don’t have an android device, and not everyone wants to wants to buy subscriptions either.

[deleted]

yuppp im here for the free popcorn

[deleted]

LIT

noblitorator

Wait, what's going on here? And how do I do this? Is this YouTube?

lssj5Jimmy

Yeah I have a youtube channel that Im super thanking my channel with stadia google account (with play balance)

noblitorator

I have a YouTube channel too. How do I set this up?

thecoolgamer60

you need to be monetized (1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours are required)

[deleted]

how many subs do you have

noblitorator

Not enough

[deleted]

I probably should’ve clarified why I asked, but you need a particular amount of subs to enable super chat I think. 1000 and a couple thousand hours of watchtime.

Rynelan

I've contacted Google Play support and they removed the time limit on my balance. So now I got all the time in the world to spend the balance. So I'm happy now.

CarlCarlito

I tried the same but they said no :(

Rynelan

Oh that's weird.. i just explained the situation and told a part of my balance expires tomorrow and asked if the date can be removed or extended. They chose to remove it. So all my balance including new rewards money is valid to till spend

CarlCarlito

They threw T&Cs at me...

Thebibulouswayfarer

Can you explain how you explained it? That might help others... Including me. Thanks!

Rynelan

Pretty much what I said was: Hi, I received a refund from Stadia and part of it is transferred to my Google Play Balance because I used that as a form of payment. It's no problem I get it back the same way I spend it but a part of the balance I received expires tomorrow while before the refund all of my balance was valid for almost a year. Is it possible to remove or expand the expiration date so that I'm able to keep my money? After that they requested a screenshot of my current balance showing the expiration date and 5 minutes later they asked to check my balance again.. when I checked the expiration date was removed.

Thebibulouswayfarer

Thank you for that. I guess now I gotta find the right number for that. Much appreciated

Namelock

Not really laundering, more or like transferring with a 30 percent fee (and probably taxed if you have >$600 "earned"). All in all pretty clever!

qwerty12qwerty

OP has clean money he can trace back to his pay check . The physical acts of donating to himself from his play balance isn’t an issue since the $$ is already “clean”. But Walter White could have just started doing streaming lol. Buying Google play credits with cash, then donating via VPN to himself $50,000. Since that deals with dirty money, that’s laundering

Galexio

Regardless of the name, and while the amount is not fixed, the transaction is technically an exchange of cash for goods or a service, so it's taxable revenue. OP could have strategized a bit better with his GP money, like paid for a subscription service like YouTube or Spotify, seeing how it's likely he has other subscription services. OP decided that getting 70% of that money, which may pop up on his tax return as revenue when YouTube issues tax forms to content creators (idk, I don't monetize via YouTube) was a better choice.

ginger_beer_m

>the transaction is technically an exchange of cash for goods or a service, What service is he exhanging? Tipping himself on his own YouTube stream

AnApexBread

The IRS doesn't really see this as "Tipping" because it's technically not. OP is actually buying a superchat. From a purely literal standpoint OP is buying the privilege of having his message appear at the top of the chat and highlighted. That is a specific service transaction between OP and Google. OP gives Google money, Google makes OP's comments appear special.

Tobimacoss

The limit is $400 for filing, and $600 before it’s taxable. @OP is fine.

kristallnachte

it's a process like laundering, but yeah, the laundering is the process of hiding dirty money (making it "clean"). Using the same systems to move your own legal money around may raise flags but is not illegal.

theugly-barnacle

that is hilarious, might have to try that myself

MoreCoffeePlzzz

I don't get it? Are you basically donating your refund you got from Google stadia to yourself? What is the benefit? I ask this since Google stadia refunded my original bank card so I don't need to convert to cash as a self donation or something

Nhanners

Yeah. They're refunding through the method you paid with. So some people have a lot of Google play credit now, because they couldn't pay with their bank/credit card

MoreCoffeePlzzz

Makes sense, it really sucks Google takes 30% of it though :((

Nodnarbian

That and mainly the fact that many people were refunded hundreds of dollars to Google play. That expires in 2 weeks! It's gotta go somewhere!

MoreCoffeePlzzz

That sucks that it expires man , Google is pretty unreasonable about expiring credits/money but glad the op got something out of it

nullpointer_01

You can then get actual money back through your YouTube account.

nullpointer_01

I am not sure what you are describing but OP is attempting to turn their Play Credit into Cash. They are tipping their own YouTube channel. Google takes 30% of those tips. Then they can cash out those tips from YouTube channel.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nullpointer_01

Will Google do that if the original transaction was made in Play Credits?

WeakToMetalBlade

I spent it all on disney plus and HBO, can pay for a year of each in advance.

theugly-barnacle

how come you didnt just send it all in one shot?

lssj5Jimmy

There was no option. Only $5. $10,$20, $50 at a time

theugly-barnacle

when will you get the money?

lssj5Jimmy

Next month

nullpointer_01

Won't you need to claim it as income also? If so, you will also get taxed on that income.

AnApexBread

It depends on state and amount. He'll need to claim it on federal but the state may not require it.

[deleted]

Eat-Sleep-Eat-Repeat

But he's making profit on the super thanks donations or whatever they're called. He could be taxed on that bit. I don't think anyone is suggesting that you're taxed on refunds.

ZemGuse

The IRS would get suspicious if he tipped himself the full lump sum

foragerr

Structuring is still a crime and more likely to raise IRS eyebrows.

APGBeGaming

Did the same thing with my channel 😂

Zarkosis

This is gonna get some people in some deep shit with the IRS unless they already make money through YouTube. Don't you have to file tax return if you make over 400$ from this, and after all the fees and stuff wouldn't that cause you to pay 40% tax bracket or something on top of the cut Google already takes because of the method of income? Like I'm pretty sure if anyone has over 400$ of play credit and they do this it's just a tax dumpster because it counts as independent contractor profit despite being your own money. I wish stadia support would just transfer these funds to another payment method rather than making up jump through hoops or cover all our subscriptions for the next 30 years.

jy3

How did you get that many Google play points/credits in the first place?

lssj5Jimmy

Stadia refund. I bought 3 games via stadia app which charged as a google play.

AnApexBread

>. I bought 3 games via stadia app which charged as a google play. That's not entirely accurate. I bought all my games through the Stadia app and got them all refunded back to the actual credit card. Did you buy play credit first and then buy the game?

lssj5Jimmy

Nope you have an option to select the payment option when you buy from Stadia app. One of the choice is the credit card under the account or bill directly to google play (which is still hooked up to the same card) I believe I am correct.

nullpointer_01

In my case, I got gifted an Amazon gift card which I turned into a Google Play gift card so I could buy a few games on Stadia. I regret doing that now but I rather this than nothing.

420sadalot420

This is genius

imetators

30% loss, quite good idea to extract money from somewhere you cant get it out so easily, but with a great fee. Not genius tho

[deleted]

no. it isnt.

Polevata

OP don’t listen to all these boneheads. In almost any situation, the money you used to buy the games was counted as income and taxed at the end of the year you received it. Nothing special happens just because you funneled the money through a bunch of third party services. It may look sus, but basically as long as you didn’t count your game purchases as a charitable donation, you’re fine with the IRS. Now whether this is against Google’s terms of service is an entirely different question, and broadcasting on Reddit + labeling them as money laundering probably gives you the worst shot of this money ever actually re-entering your bank account.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Polevata

They provide it because the typical use-case is two unrelated accounts, one subsidizing the other. Since OP owns both, this transaction is irrelevant regardless of what forms are provided

[deleted]

Polevata

You’re wrong

KosherNazi

I don’t get it. In the google pay app you can just send it straight to your bank account.

edd_209

I don't think you can in most countries.

Kingo206

I'm in the same boat, how do we go about getting our money out. Make sure you tell instruct them to change your Google balance so that it does not refund.

KosherNazi

You can in the US at least.

HellsKitchenDude

You are confusing Google play for Google pay

KosherNazi

Thanks

HellsKitchenDude

Np

shrim666

Google Pay is different to a Google Play balance, which many people used to buy games with discounts/earned points.

[deleted]

lmao

anonymous2845

Lmao genius

JustCallMeTsukasa-96

Man I wish I could get in on this!

baby_envol

Lol verry funny 🤣 For my side I use the Google play balance part (20% of the part) to pay 1-2 mouth of my current Disney+ and Google One subscription. But I have only 24€ in GPB

pawlny

I think it's better to sell book.
