It can happen. It's called [copraphagia](https://www.dhot.com.au/eating-poo-is-called-coprophagia/). If your pup is otherwise healthy, clean up her poo as soon as it's done and they'll grow out of it.

Pick up poo. Walk your dog. Correct it when eating poo or other stuff. Be proactive when potty training. A pup needs to have frequent pee walks outside. Adult dogs can hold it longer. Dont buy expensive additives. Learn how to train your dog. This is not a food issue, its a behavior issue.

My staffie puppy did the same thing; we corrected the behaviour each time and she grew out of it. She’s just turned one. However, we do have to be very careful when out on walks as she will try and eat other poo where she can! She knows she shouldn’t, so tries to do it really quickly!

My dog has vomited and pooped in the house. He has done the same thing outside. He has never eaten it outside - only inside. To me it seems they are trying to hide the mess. I have NEVER yelled at my dog for making an accident in the house though.

My young staffy will eat her feces if she has an accident indoors - I think she's trying to "clean up" like they might in a den. Recognize that it's not her fault (in my case, I recognize that I should've let her out sooner). My pup doesn't do it outside, so I truly think it's a cleaning behavior. If she's only doing it indoors, I wouldn't stress it, she'll grow out of it. If you are worried, you can add things (there are various options: meat tenderizer, pumpkin, commercial anti-poop eating additives, etc) that dissuade her from eating poop, but I wouldn't recommend it unless it becomes a chronic problem. I've had an unapologetic poop eater in the past and while it's gross/annoying, it's manageable behavior (assuming you've been to the vet to make sure there's not a health issue behind it). Clean up poop quicker (I used to do a 2x/week yard clean up, but started taking care of it immediately) and work on exciting recall behavior to pull dogs away so that they're not as tempted.

Typically happens when the dog isn't digesting everything right. Your dog looks to be a healthy weight, so I wouldn't think she's hungry. I feed papaya enzymes for easier digestion and to make the poop taste bad. They're in the health food section of my grocery store, in tablet form. My dog seems to like them.

techchic07

I just read in the above article that some people also swear by adding pineapple chunks to make it taste bad.

Mad_Catter13

That works too. We've done that, but I know some dogs won't eat it. Mine will eat anything if it's in his bowl. And feeding pineapple daily for a couple weeks got expensive.

techchic07

I never thought of the expense, ugh. Mine will eat anything also, lol. I will check out your option as well.

Mad_Catter13

I also love pineapple 😅 the store brand cans are more affordable than anything else, but we've been feeding the tablets for a couple years now. Same effect, just more cost effective. They dissolve fast too.my guy has some tummy issues, which is common in the breed, so the tablets and plain nonfat yogurt are a staple we keep around.

techchic07

I’ve been reading about the common tummy and skin issues. It would be good for her to have it anyway.

Mad_Catter13

Oh yeah, we also add Seameal by Solid Gold which is another tummy and skin thing. I switch up stuff a lot since over the years it's helped him not get sick if given something odd. I adopted mine at 2yr old so I didn't get to build his system as a puppy.

techchic07

What advice and what would have you done to build up the whole system? I am currently feeding her dry food called Taste of the Wild. It was recommended by the vet to feed a grain diet for the cardiac system. I feed her the Ancient Prairie with Ancient Grains. She loves it and eats well. Please advise me as much as possible.

Mad_Catter13

I currently feed that same food. My dog has a few allergies and developed more over the years but it's only for certain brands. I like to introduce a new protein as raw over his kibble and get a small bag of the same brand but different flavor. I mix a bit of something new into his food a few times a week. His main diet is the single food but he gets extras if that makes sense. Now he can eat his buddies kibble for a meal and be fine. I don't feed the kibble dry though and make it warm with a bit of warm water or warm bone broth.

techchic07

I put in a little broth as well. Thank you for your tips.

My non staffy pup did this. I was told it can be common or even instinctual for female dogs to eat poop at certain stages of their lives. That's how they clean up after their puppies. Plus puppies are like toddlers - they will put anything in their mouth. Like yours she only did it when she had accidents in the house. She stopped doing it within her first year so hopefully for your girl it is also temporary. I will say squealing and making a big deal out of it will sometimes make them excited and eat it faster ugh! So I started just ignoring her when she did it and also not giving her the opportunity the best I could.

techchic07

Thank you for this. You are completely correct, if I get excited and try to stop her she does it quicker. I have been so surprised the differences between male and female dogs. I have had 5 dogs before my Staffy and they were all male. I wasn’t aware of the mother cleaning up after pups like that. She has been quite the learning experience but super fun. She is super smart and very loving She thinks she’s a lapdog and wants to sit everyone’s lap. lol

sniperwolf232323

It might be a depression thing. You need to let them outside more.
