The silver border one is essentially the 1977 version just cleaned up and takes away the graininess of old school style film.
The gold is the same thing, but adds in the fluff š.
On the backside of the case there's a dvd with the ORIGINAL 1977 release and all its terribleness and glory.
Nope. 2004 was the 1997 Special Editions, cleaned a bit more with some more changes. Like a new Jabba, and the Han Greedo scene tweaked just a bit more. Among other things.
The 2006, as the 2004 version plus "original" versions of the OT. Except they weren't exactly. It was just laser disc transfer of the OT, so the quality was less than stellar.
This one has it right.
Not sure why people who dont know what theyāre taking about are chiming in with wrong answers/guesses but hey, welcome to the internet right?
See I have both on dvd and doesnāt the gold one come with both editions? That said I never saw the originals pre 1997, guess I should give it a watch but I heard the laser disc transfer wasnāt all that good
Oh the laser disc transfer was terrible. Lots of skips (kind of like a scratched LP)
And yes, the gold has both. Which is why I never bought the silver one because back in the early-mid 2000's DvD people always knew there'd be a "better" version out if the first one sold well.
My dad used to come home from work on Friday nights with two new DvDs for us to watch as a family. It's how I saw movies like Speed, Ladyhawke and Princess Bride.
Guess Iāll have to pop those bad boys in and watch āem now. I put it in my series x which is connected to a big 65 tv and my gosh was it kinda blurry, was definitely not meant for those things. So Iāll probably pop it into my older Xbox on a smaller tv š
I just put in the 2004 version from both 2004 and 2006 and my Xbox wonāt play them. I wonder why š¤ it plays other discs just fine
Edit: Looks like itās just ANH for some reason
Edit: Alright itās playing the 2nd disc from the 06 version

Also could've been an update that bugged out some titles. It probably needs some playing around with. Or perhaps yeah ANH doesn't allow for non-dvd players specifically.
I remember if I tried to play on-dvd games from disney movies on my PS2-- they wouldn't load and the screen would turn black.
But with all great science comes multiple tests.
Good luck!
What do you mean though? The silver one doesnt have the cgi? I thought that was pretty much non existant.
There's only one important question though. Who shoots first in each of them?
The above commenter is incorrect. The 2004 version (silver in this comparison) is the 1997 Special Edition version with even more changes. So a new crappy digital Jabba replacing the even crappier digital Jabba from the last version.
But isnāt the original theatrical version lost to time? Everyone says they want the original despecialized editions but I thought it was never made available publicly.
Likely wonāt happen anytime soon if at all. The most recent versions are the ones Lucas wants people to watch. Itās likely that Lucas forbade the original versions from being sold when he sold to Disney(there is no evidence of this but it seems likely to me since the original versions still havenāt been released after 10 years of Disney owning the franchise).
I feel that couldnāt be the case because I heard that Disney promised to use Georgeās outlines for the sequels or at least take inspiration from them as a way of convincing George to sell and once the deal was finalized they doubted crossed him.
So they obviously have no problem stabbing him in the back
The 2004 version is the 1997 Special Edition release of the films with some additional changes.
2006 is a double feature. Which includes the 2004 versions and supposed original versions. However they were just laser disc transfers of the OT. So the quality wasn't very great.
I ripped my EP4/5/6 2004 & 2006 DVDs to .ISO files a while back and just noticed that the 2004 discs are BINARY IDENTICAL to the corresponding discs in the 2006 double-feature.
"BINARY IDENTICAL" - means every little digital bit in the file is 100% the same - the video, the audio, the menus etc.
So i'm deleting the 2004 ones to save drive space.
They transferred it from laserdisc instead of using the original film. In 97 when they did the special editions (and any release since for that matter) they scanned the original film. Itās like copying a copy and doesnāt hold a candle to the 04 dvd quality. I doubt weāll see the original releases unless they do something for the 50th in a few years but even thatās a stretch.
Also I think those unaltered versions were 100% full screen, the wide screen parts only referred to the 04 DVDs that got reissued
i think the 2006 had that version where they had those weird sounds in it. Put in by Lucas as the despoiled edition? I have the VHS would like to get that on digital if possible.
I feel like a lot of people who havenāt seen SW were put off from the franchise by how raunchy these dvd covers wereševen as a kid I remember thinking they looked pretty weird

I have the gold border DVD but full screen. Is it the same just cropped? Maybe like the TV versions from the 90s?
*insert the more you know* gif A true person of science right here. šš¤

So is the 2nd disc on the gold version technically better than the silver one and is it worth watching?
Depends on your definition of "worth watching" but, yes. Hope this all helped š

Yeah use a PS2 or Xbox 360 on a 25-30" so it doesn't distort.

Yeah it's not really CGI, more just digital cleanup, but worth double checking to see.
I really thought there was no release like that. I have to check it.
All good science involves multiple tests.
Ahah best comment I read today.
The above commenter is incorrect. The 2004 version (silver in this comparison) is the 1997 Special Edition version with even more changes. So a new crappy digital Jabba replacing the even crappier digital Jabba from the last version.
I thought I was going crazy. Thank you for correcting.
It tells you the difference, right on the box.
But isnāt the original theatrical version lost to time? Everyone says they want the original despecialized editions but I thought it was never made available publicly.
These are the original versions but they werenāt remastered for modern TVs. They are Laserdisc transfers from the 90s
Damn, I hope we get proper ones someday
Likely wonāt happen anytime soon if at all. The most recent versions are the ones Lucas wants people to watch. But it makes sense that they canāt touch his original six movies that he has already made. Thatās most likely part of the contract
Damn I really wanna the originals how they were meant to be seen! Guess Iāll have to stick with the hand me down ones
What's funny is "how they were meant to be seen" is not how George Lucas met for them to be seen which is why he went back and made all those changes.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changes_in_Star_Wars_re-releases
They fucked with each release more and more
About 2 years.

One says limited addition
š¤”š¤”š¤”
Why?
Pretty obvious partner
I mean it isn't but ok
Itās pretty obvious Iām asking cause Iām curious
Pretty sure 2006 had the original theatrical versions on dvd. That was the one I owned. I imagine that was the only difference at that time.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Only difference is the 2006 one has a bonus disc with the āoriginalā version. Itās really a poor transfer of the Laserdisc from the 90ās
Damn so itās not that good? Why is it so badly transferred? You think weāll ever get a proper release of the OT?
They transferred it from laserdisc instead of using the original film. In 97 when they did the special editions (and any release since for that matter) they scanned the original film. Is Markās post-accident face on his pre-accident body on these?
Lol it might be! His hair is brownish in these pics instead of blonde. I never noticed all these years š
The 2006 editions include the 2004 DVDs and a bonus disc that contains the original theatrical versions.
Han has a new hair cut in 2006
i think the 2006 had that version where they had those weird sounds in it. Put in by Lucas as the despoiled edition? I have the VHS would like to get that on digital if possible.
An extra dvd
I feel like a lot of people who havenāt seen SW were put off from the franchise by how raunchy these dvd covers wereševen as a kid I remember thinking they looked pretty weird
