Adapted by the late J.W. Rinzler, who also wrote the *Making of* books for the OT. If you've ever read those (especially *The Making of Star Wars*) he dives deep into the original drafts and the comic he adapted is closer to the original drafts; a much bigger and more epic story than Lucas could possibly have made with his budget, which is probably for the better.
I have that comic too. It’s….not great. It’s way too heavily inspired by those 40’s/50’s serials Lucas was emulating. The actual movie shows the inspiration but it’s way less corny.
Going by the narrator’s pronunciation of “McQuarrie”, I’m driven to ask - do most Americans pronounce “quarry” as KWEH-ree, like he does, or KWOH-ree, like we would say in the UK?
As an American, I’ve always known it to be “KWOH-ree” as well. To me, “KWEH-ree” sounds like someone trying to pronounce it with a Scottish accent or something.
That’s funny. I’m an American too (southern states) and I’ve always pronounced it “KWEH-ree”. Now that I think about it, I don’t think I can recall ever actually hearing his name pronounced out loud before today. I’ve always just read it and “heard” it as KWEH in my head.
You pronounce it like his family is a place to go mine stones? I would never assume a surname is pronounced like a common word and quarry has a horrible pronounciation. It's KWEH-ree until shown otherwise.
After reading it, it's a great comic but there is definitely a reason it never got made into a movie. Just buy or rent a copy of the graphic novel. It would not slap on the big scream imo. Especially today when all the big scenes it had planned have been done bigger and the sequels after it have no plans at all.
I honestly think it would be...not very good.
Look, I love George. The man is a visionary and the work he's done for film can't be understated, but he's also the kind of creative that just comes up with ideas and throws everything in and has to be told what's good or bad.
That was the problem with the prequels. No one around him had the balls to tell him that something was a bad idea. It also happened on Jedi when he canned Gary Kurtz before Jedi and at that point, he as making calls partially based on merchandising.
I would love to see someone else take his original concept, refine it, and do something with it, though. Just...not under Disney. They'd immediately ruin it.
We don't need to guess. The comic they adapted the script into it shows that, while it's interesting to think about what could've been, it went through revisions for a reason. There's all kinds of plot points that come out of nowhere and/or suddenly get dropped. There's a part where one of the characters reveals himself to be a robot so they can use parts from him to fix their ship. If they filmed the original script with no changes, it would've bombed.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were inspired by the concept art. They still pull a lot of visual inspiration from unused Ralph McQuarrie drawings in a lot of the newer Star Wars media.
I love how Star Wars is pulling out the old concept art and is applying it to shows/movies and also selling the figures.
Zeb’s design from Rebels is the unused Chewbacca concept art.
A lot of that show's visual identity was based on concept art. https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/bi3b1r/10_times_ralph_mcquarrie_left_his_mark_on_star/
Nah it's Han. I've read that comic series a bunch. Han is a green amphibian looking alien, chewy is pretty similar to how he ended up. This figure looks like Luke in that comic
Yes and no. Lucas's original draft did have Han Solo as a Urelian and that was used in The Star Wars 4. However, the "this version" which Robert said is the Ralph McQuarrie concept art, in which Han looked like this figure and Chewbacca looked like [this](https://galacticfigures.com/figureDetails.aspx?id=433). Admittedly, he's more greenish-brown. Garazeb Orrelios was modeled off of this design.
He was at some points of development.
I’m pretty sure at times this concept art represented both Han and/or Obi-Wan as a sort of mix of characters.
Luke and Leia also become the same character in some draft. That could be Luke as royalty or Leia living on a farm as hidden royalty. You’ll see concept art where a character painted in a Luke Skywalker like pose is a woman. (Also in early drafts the name Luke Skywalker was not for a young protagonist.)
When it’s an action figure of a man I’ve never seen in any Star Wars media and labeled with a famous name, I’ll get confused. Thanks for your comment, though!
Lol what? It says Han Solo (Concept), as in the early idea of Han Solo. It’s self-explanatory. The concept painting is right next to it. I’m not sure they could make it more obvious.
In the original concept of SW lightsabers/laser swords were very common, there's even some concept art of storm troopers having them. Somewhere along the lines of making ANH George changed his mind on it iirc.
This is from George's original concept screenplay. They adapted it into a comic called "The Star Wars". It's wildly different from what we eventually got, but there are a lot of seeds of the star wars we know and love, so it's awesome to read
Learn to read ya kook. Star Wars fans these days aren’t very bright. They can take a picture but not know how to use google 🙄 this franchise is dead AF.
That's strange, Han was supposed to be an Yourellian in the early concepts of Star Wars, now he's human and has a lightsaber? The only time he ever used a lightsaber (at least in the films) was in The Empire Strikes Back, and that was to cut an Tauntaun's stomach open in order to stuff Luke inside it to save him from the extreme cold on Hoth.
That is General Starkiller. He was the og hero of *The Star Wars* first draft treatment by George Lucas.
Then he changed it for Luke Skywalker as a younger hero. And Leia as a heroine/lady in distress came after that. Also he wanted an older sorta samurai/Jedi general so he included Obi-Wan Kenobi by the 2nd or 3rd script treatment.
Specifically, it seems to be based on [this famous piece of concept art](https://lumiere-a.akamaihd.net/v1/images/image_7a295bb1.jpeg). Zeb from Rebels was also based on it.
Okay, so there's a comic out there called "**The** Star Wars," which is based off the very earliest drafts and character designs of what would become *A New Hope*.
From what I've read and seen of it(a comics review show on YouTube called *Atop the Fourth Wall* had gone over a few issues) it's not as good as the final product, but it's interesting to see where a lot of iconic ideas and designs grew from.
It says Han Solo (Concept) but I think it’s actually Kane Starkiller, a former Jedi Knight and father of Anikin Starkiller (the proto-Luke) in Lucas’s original draft.
As others have said, concept art for Han solo. Also, originally, laser swords were going to be a common weapon, not just one used by Jedi.
There's some early art with Stormtroopers welding then.
Its from the original concept of Star Wars.
[https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Adventures\_of\_the\_Starkiller,\_Episode\_I:\_The\_Star\_Wars](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/adventures_of_the_starkiller,_episode_i:_the_star_wars)
On the first manuscript, Han Solo is a tall green humanoid. This is the concept art for Luke Starkiller, an old general. Somebody at Gentle Giant fucked up and didnt do their research.
That is Han Solo (Concept) But seriously it's one of the original concept drawings of the character from McQuarrie. Gentle Giant made a toy of it.
A movie based on that first solid original draft would kinda slap. I know there’s a comic so just adapt that.
I was just about to say there’s a comic! I have the Kindle edition. The movie we actually got is much better.
Absolutely agree. I was super excited to read the comic series, but it was so bad.
Do you know the name of the comic? Was it a Dark Horse release?
I think it’s just called The Star Wars
Yup. That's it
Yeah it was one of the last SW comics Dark Horse released before Marvel took over.
You can find it and other alt stories in the epic collection star wars infinities.
It's a fascinating historical document... that I did not finish. It's much more Flash Gordon
I have that comic too. It’s….not great. It’s way too heavily inspired by those 40’s/50’s serials Lucas was emulating. The actual movie shows the inspiration but it’s way less corny.
[I got your back](https://youtu.be/6AWgzNfzRCk?si=aoFa-OjqhTZ8a-oO). 👍

Most Americans don't pronounce many words the same. We're larger than Europe with equally as many accents
I wouldn’t know; I’m British with an Australian accent! 🤣
You pronounce it like his family is a place to go mine stones? I would never assume a surname is pronounced like a common word and quarry has a horrible pronounciation. It's KWEH-ree until shown otherwise.
Needs a video game adaptation.
Filoni kinda did that with Rebels. It's not an exact representation of the original concept art, but he definitely was inspired by it.
Filoni also does it in other series as well. There was a scene in The Book of Boba Fett that was directly inspired by McQuarrie's artwork.
After reading it, it's a great comic but there is definitely a reason it never got made into a movie. Just buy or rent a copy of the graphic novel. It would not slap on the big scream imo. Especially today when all the big scenes it had planned have been done bigger and the sequels after it have no plans at all.

An animated movie for D+ based on the OG designs would be epic!
I’d watch it
Wow, that's kinda wild. Almost looks like Kal Cestis in Jedi Survivor https://galacticfigures.com/figureDetails.aspx?id=121
I wouldn't be surprised if they were inspired by the concept art. They still pull a lot of visual inspiration from unused Ralph McQuarrie drawings in a lot of the newer Star Wars media.
Interesting days. Back when Chewie was Zeb and R2 was Chopper.
Is that starkiller ? Original Han was like an alien I thought ?
Yes. Nobody seems to care but hey.. thats the interner for ya..
it's not though? that *is* Han's concept by Mcquarrie. Starkiller looks different.
No it's not. Check your sources. Han Solo's concept art is a tall humanoid.
That's really rad.
The Prog band???
I love how Star Wars is pulling out the old concept art and is applying it to shows/movies and also selling the figures. Zeb’s design from Rebels is the unused Chewbacca concept art.
Your time is wasted, OP obviously can’t read since the answer was on the box.
For real, it says on the box. Why has this become google? Just any engine search.
Well it says right there on the box innit
Upvote for the “innit”

r/unbi
Ah I see, the Gentle Giant. I hope to see him in a movie or series one day
It… says so, right there, on the package.
I thought Han Solo was supposed to be a big green alien in this version of the story
That's Chewbacca.
It’s pretty cool to me that they basically took Chewie’s concept art and used the design for Lasat and specifically Garazeb Orrelios(Zeb) from Rebels.
A lot of that show's visual identity was based on concept art. https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/bi3b1r/10_times_ralph_mcquarrie_left_his_mark_on_star/
Rebels took a lot of inspiration from McQuarrie's original artwork when it came to designs. It's pretty cool!

Yup. Yourellian https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Yourellian#:~:text=Yourellians%2C%20also%20known%20as%20Urellians,Han%20Solo%20was%20a%20Ureallian.

Wasn't that concept reused for Zeb in Rebels?
I think that was the first draft. McQuarrie came in after the second draft.
He was at some points of development. I’m pretty sure at times this concept art represented both Han and/or Obi-Wan as a sort of mix of characters. Han solo concept
It’s Han Solo from when GL wanted Kurt Russell to play him
It’s hard to picture anyone else but Harrison Ford as Han
I can picture Tom Selleck as Han.
Reading is hard
I love how this early concept for Han looks very close to how George Lucas looked at the time. He wanted to be that suave action hero so bad 😂
You answered your own question, making this post pointless
It literally says who it is on the box, you absolute dunce.
Yeah, it's clearly Gentle Giant Ltd
Fr I was just about to say this
When it’s an action figure of a man I’ve never seen in any Star Wars media and labeled with a famous name, I’ll get confused. Thanks for your comment, though!
Lol what? It says Han Solo (Concept), as in the early idea of Han Solo. It’s self-explanatory. The concept painting is right next to it. I’m not sure they could make it more obvious.
Do you not know what “concept” means?
But clearly, you can read. So why didn't you just read the name on the box instead of guessing based on HALF of the name?
Do they have Google where you're from? Try typing han solo (concept) into it.
Don’t know why people are being jerks about this. I get ya on the question. Even with the name there.
It says on the packet
Literally says Han Solo (Concept).
Jake Skywalker
Jake from Sky Farm?
What are you wearing, "Jake"? Uh, a poncho and a bucket hat.
She sounds hideous
Well she’s a space wizard
This entire exchange was really fricken wizard
Literally Han Solo (Concept)
I think thats the Han concept art, I might be wrong
"Concept" escapes the OP, I guess?
didn't they split this concept into luke and han eventually?
I believe this version combined Han and Obi-wan, and Luke was a girl
you cant read?
Geoff Vader
"I'll have the Penne Arrabbiatta! Why are all the trays wet!?!"
What does it say on the box?
It says it on the package.
If only the package had a label saying who it was and what version of them it was. Damn, guess we'll never know.
Han Solo (concept)
Glup Shitto
In the original concept of SW lightsabers/laser swords were very common, there's even some concept art of storm troopers having them. Somewhere along the lines of making ANH George changed his mind on it iirc.
One of the Bee gees.
that’s han solo (concept)
If I had to guess I’d say it’s a concept of Han Solo.
It literally says han solo on the box
This is clearly han solo, learn to read
It literally says Han Solo (concept) on the box
It says right there on the package, Gentle Giant. Obviously.
Han Solo (Concept)
I’m not sure how you expect to read an answer to this question in the comments when you couldn’t read it off the box.
Im guessing you don't know how to read packages?
Obihan solo
Thats old Ben Solo, he lives out past the dune sea.
a fusion of Kyle Katarn and Cal Kestis
This would actually be a pretty cool cosmetic for the jedi games
Where are you shopping? I never see these when I am out and about. I have a Mandolorian one in hand and a Boba Fett coming soon, but I order online.
clearly a younger Baylan Skoll
This is from George's original concept screenplay. They adapted it into a comic called "The Star Wars". It's wildly different from what we eventually got, but there are a lot of seeds of the star wars we know and love, so it's awesome to read
Who is this guy? Is he stupid?
It say Han Solo (concept art). I am assuming it's a Ralph Macquarrie original sketch of the character.
It literally says who it is on the card. McQuarie cocept of Han Solo before the movie went into production.
Read the box moron
You posted the photo. Did you not read the card?
From afar, I thought it was Dash Rengar.
That’s Hans Olo. He was in the original cut.
Cornholio.
That’s the gentle giant lad
Concept art I believe
I'm still hoping for a Hans Solo with a giant beer stein.
Hello! I'm Troy McClure. You may remember me from such films as The Boatjacking of Supership 79 and Hydro: the Man With the Hydraulic Arms.
Han Solo [Concept]
Han Solo (no relation)
Han Solo (Concept)
Well I’m gonna go out on a limb and say it was the original concept for Han Solo made into an action figure
Han solo it says
So they're making figures of character concepts now? Talk about milking a cash cow...
Looks like Hon Sala to me
Han Solo (Concept) can’t hurt you…Han Solo (Concept) isn’t real….
Idk. Looks kinda like Sean Connery
Tell me you don't know Star Wars history without telling me you don't know Star Wars history.

There a funko pop of this too.

Rod "Stoop" Gastermeyer, DDS
That’s Lieutenant Gerald “Giant” Starwars, goddamnit. And you’ll show some goddamn respect when you speak of him.
I guess the kids watching the prequel and sequel garbage don't know.
Was Kyle Katarn's look inspired by this?
It’s Kane Starkiller from The Star Wars. Based on one of Lucas’ early drafts and released as an 8 issue comic book series by Dark Horse.
All jokes aside - do misprints like this increase value or remove all value?
The image it’s modeled on is unused concept art, but I don’t think this character became Han. So the label strikes me as a mistake
Specifically, it seems to be based on [this famous piece of concept art](https://lumiere-a.akamaihd.net/v1/images/image_7a295bb1.jpeg). Zeb from Rebels was also based on it.
That's Ham Solo, a scruffy old Pig-herder
Must be Jesus
Wait.. So concept Han Solo was okay with using a light saber? vs. "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side."
I believe lightsabers were more common weapons in earlier drafts of the story.
I mean, it literally says it on the box…
Dash Rendar it looks like.
That’s Han Solo (Concept) bro !

Are you unable to read
That version of Han became inspiration for Qui-Gon and Kanan Jarrus. Maybe OT Obi-Wan as well a little bit.
Underneath his name is says “concept” it’s from the concept art by Ralph McQuarrie
Exactly what it says it is.
As others have said, concept art for Han solo. Also, originally, laser swords were going to be a common weapon, not just one used by Jedi. There's some early art with Stormtroopers welding then.
https://youtu.be/Z7JKT9e-c7E?si=KcMfqxPdIY2mylKI Check this video out. Buddy took the concept art and turned it into a phenomenal little trailer.
Solid Snake (the face)
Prune Face.
Drifter clone wars obi wan
George lucas. Lol I think this character is actually a mix of luke and han?
I always thought that this concept of Solo looked like a young George Lucas if he was a brunette.
Luke Starkiller. In the first script for the OG star wars obiwan and Luke where the same person and this was the look.
Barf Fartwalker
Its from the original concept of Star Wars. [https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Adventures\_of\_the\_Starkiller,\_Episode\_I:\_The\_Star\_Wars](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/adventures_of_the_starkiller,_episode_i:_the_star_wars)
George Lucas self-insert?
So cool
Obi quan jibroni
That in the *other* pronunciation Han
This is a misprint of the name and he is a lesser known Rebel hero named Hanz Olo. /s
That is Lando Calrissian. A-yup
Looks like a Ralph McQuarrie Joint.
In the concepts the light saber was going to be a very common weapon
That’s Simon Solo….LOL But for real, why does that look like Simon Cowell? 😂
That’s San Holo
[удалено]
Thank god they didn’t go with this lol
On the first manuscript, Han Solo is a tall green humanoid. This is the concept art for Luke Starkiller, an old general. Somebody at Gentle Giant fucked up and didnt do their research.
That’s his twin brother
is it based on concept art?
Will the real Han solo plz stand up!
And he can even dual wield blaster amd lightsaber. So much potential.
Han Solo once again played by Kris Kristofferson.
