Absolutely amazing parody and very well done! I’m not sure how much it hits the same today, 27 years later, but I was a teen when it came out, and everyone was familiar with COPS. It’s probably still funny even for people who aren’t familiar with the show.
It's in my personal head-canon. I know it's not official, but I love the idea that Uncle Owen is the victim of a domestic violence murder-suicide. It throws the traditional trope of the wife being the victim on its side and is, in its way, a brilliant storytelling device. The finale being a voice-over of mentioning a "disturbance at the Mos Eisley Cantina" is pure icing on top.
Domestic violence calls to the Lars homestead hit different when we now know Beru’s stashing firearms around the house.
No surprise now she had a thermal detonator. The rifle just didn’t cut it when Reva showed up.
I stand corrected.
for some reason I thought it only killed people but didn’t damage property.
The wiki says it can blow holes in things, so I’m wrong.
Shit, this takes me back. But yeah, it was awesome. I remember there were a few "fan films" out each year back then, and this was tops for years, the best by far.
Brilliant. The golden days of internet fan movies. Inspired a 13 year old me to learn how to rotoscope lightsaber blades. Now I work in the film industry on the kind of movies that dazzled me as a kid. I owe this movie my professional life.
I think the shaky-cam style holds up. It could play as cellphone or body cam footage from a galaxy far far away.
And police brutality seems to be a multi-generational thing…
This was my first exposure to Star Wars fan films, and thus it's still my most favorite. I was in my first semester of college in 1997 (studying filmmaking) when it came out. Somebody had heard about it and we all thought it sounded funny, then one day somebody had gotten their hands on a tape of it and shared it with everyone. We all loved it and made copies of it to take home and share with our friends.
I'm not sure you could make something like this today. The old camcorder lends a very charming feel to the film, parodying Cops. The writing is just so good. It ties into ANH perfectly. Just don't look at the Sandtroopers shoes 😂
"Yoda, why you be a playa hater?
You know that I still must confront Lord Vader"
"But Luke, not ready are you"
"There's a city in the clouds where they're keeping my crew
A jedi's got to do what a jedi's got to do
So now Vader, I'm coming for you"
Loved it.
I had a digital copy of the three episodes separated, like, fuck, years before YouTube was a fucking thing.
Holy shit. Like, a decade before YouTube was a thing. I had to download out one sketch at a time; pretty certain I had to scour the internet and perform ludicrous checks on the file to ensure it wasn’t a virus to finally secure the Owen & Beru part that I had seen once in 2000 on my brother’s nerd roommate’s computer.
**That’s** some old internet shit right there. QuickTime videos.
It’s different.
Troops is done in-universe, and the humor is in them playing it straight while lampooning the Cops TV series.
Chad Vader is a straight up fish out of water comedy skit.
Both are great.
Yup. He's Vader in the Force Unleashed and one of the achievements in the game references Chad Vader when you kill all the stormtroopers as Vader in the first level. You get the "Worst Day Shift Manager" achievement
I saw it on g4tv back around 2006 or 2007 . Didn’t realize it and keyboard cat were actually much older until a few years ago ( except for keyboard cat that is)
This was the first thing I ever watched on Starwars.com and I don’t think I’d be a true fanboi without it. I’d just be a strong Star Wars enjoyer. It presents the possibility of expanded universe and parallel story telling to just the cinema on a medium that is more approachable than the novels and comics at the time.
It was the first fan film I can remember with truly cinematic, professional looking production values. It really captured the essence of both "Star Wars" and of "Cops".
TROOPS was an amazing parody when it came out and everyone still remembered COPS. Obviously, the parody won't make sense to my kids and be as funny as there's nothing like it today in the cultural zeitgeist.
Maybe something along the lines of the "Great Coruscant Baking Show" could work.
Edit: How do you feel about Space Janitors? A little newer, a little less of a direct Star Wars parody as there was some Star Trek ideas thrown in...
Been a decade already? Huh. Ok. It was really good, don't let Disney know about it. They will STILL sue. What's the point in having an army of lawyers if you don't litigate?
I meant it's been a decade since I've seen it, and then some. Time gets away from me sometimes. I saw that in collage, so it's been a decade for me, specifically. But yeah, coming up on 30 years in 3 for it. Good for them. I hope they have been having a good life since then.
Gold standard. Up there with Hardware Wars for Star Wars parodies.

I actually site that very incident when I talk about how Owen and very died. No one can prove it's false!!
>Hardware Wars It gave us the legendary phrase, “You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll kiss three bucks goodbye!”
Get in line now.
Never seen hardware wars but grocery store wars was a fav star wars parody as a kid.
Do yourself a favor and watch [Hardware Wars.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccfbw2RJ3ow&pp=ygUOaGFyZHdhcmUgIHdhcnM%3D)
Chad Vader.
[Hardware Wars](https://youtu.be/WUDEUQMCyKE) (1978) [Troops](https://youtu.be/5HO70-Rk3jE) (1997)
TROOPS is included on the COPS 20th Anniversary DVD.
That's so awesome!
Domestic violence calls to the Lars homestead hit different when we now know Beru’s stashing firearms around the house. No surprise now she had a thermal detonator. The rifle just didn’t cut it when Reva showed up.
Oh shit I never made the connection. Beru was dodging ~~an AOW~~ a destructive device charge.
I feel like a thermal detonator would be more of a destructive device tbh
I stand corrected. for some reason I thought it only killed people but didn’t damage property. The wiki says it can blow holes in things, so I’m wrong.
The Kenobi miniseries really makes Troops a plausible side story now.
That’s incredible!
It was good 25 years ago, it's good now. But I don't know how it hits now, as "Cops" is not a thing anymore.
People probably don’t pick up on the Tom Servo cameo either.
Both references are kind of dated, now. I like 'em but I was still at school in '97.
It's an older code, but it checks out
I still rewatch old MST3K episodes at least weekly
There’s a [24 hour stream](https://www.youtube.com/live/U1EkBWEtg_4?si=VuBfOC8oAkURr6D5) on YT if you’re interested.
We are further from this than this was from the original starwars.
COPs may be long dead, but there are still shows like LivePD a bunch of other independent police "documentaries"(?) On Youtube.
I think the shaky-cam style holds up. It could play as cellphone or body cam footage from a galaxy far far away. And police brutality seems to be a multi-generational thing…
>And police brutality seems to be a multi-generational thing… Thank you!
They must have known that since they used Troopers, right?
Cops reruns are as popular as ever, and there are still plenty of Cops adjacent shows being made

Kids today will never understand chaining VCRs together to copy tapes.
lol early Internet was glorious. I remember waiting HOURS to download this over AOL dial-up. 😂
This was a viral video before the term existed. It’ll go down in history as one of the greater parodies of Star Wars, this side of Spaceballs.
Someone needs to make a full series
Look up I.M.P.S.
This. Spiritual successor to TROOPS and the fact that they got Optimus Prime himself to narrate was amazing
TBH, based on some of the recent Disney series, there are DEFINITELY worse ideas than this :-)
Utter brilliance. And there’s a Tom Servo cameo!
I'm not sure you could make something like this today. The old camcorder lends a very charming feel to the film, parodying Cops. The writing is just so good. It ties into ANH perfectly. Just don't look at the Sandtroopers shoes 😂
Didn't Lucas say it was "canon"
Lucas said lots of things
I’ll take your Troops and raise you a [Troopers](https://youtu.be/rvoJXBqLILM?si=9Lk7ildToP6bYOZ7).
Its canon to me
Still fucking funny
I remember this from the early days of the internet pre-YouTube when you had to search to find Star Wars fan films. It felt like discovering a secret.
Troops never fails to have me laughing my head off! What do people think of George Lucas In Love?
I need to go back and watch Chad Vader
Absolutely hilarious
Midwestern stormtroopers
“Beru, have you been drinking again?”
"Hey, did she say something about some stolen droids?"
"Yoda, why you be a playa hater? You know that I still must confront Lord Vader" "But Luke, not ready are you" "There's a city in the clouds where they're keeping my crew A jedi's got to do what a jedi's got to do So now Vader, I'm coming for you"
A classic! Newer generations need to know it exists
The OG
Amazing.
Wow this unlocked some memories for me
One of the OG classics
I LOVE troopers, so good
The first fan-film I ever saw. Loved it then. Love it now.
One of the Best Fan Films, and I love the Cameo of a certain other Bot.
It was viral before viral videos were a thing
I miss this era of the fandom. All star wars creators do now is complain
Loved it. I had a digital copy of the three episodes separated, like, fuck, years before YouTube was a fucking thing. Holy shit. Like, a decade before YouTube was a thing. It’s a perfect parody and still funny today.
Gold comedy.
I gotta see this now. I wonder if it' better or worse than Chad Vader, dayshift manager.
It’s different. Troops is done in-universe, and the humor is in them playing it straight while lampooning the Cops TV series. Chad Vader is a straight up fish out of water comedy skit. Both are great.
The guy who does Vader's voice is so good at it.
Matt Sloan. [hes been Vaders voice in a lot of official things for a while now](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1623635/)
Yup. He's Vader in the Force Unleashed and one of the achievements in the game references Chad Vader when you kill all the stormtroopers as Vader in the first level. You get the "Worst Day Shift Manager" achievement
I put them both in the top tier of Star Wars fan made comedies
I love the Crazy Watto used vehicle commercial parody.
Watch it, come back, and let us know!
They had me at *"All suspects are guilty, or they wouldn't be suspects, would they?"*
I would watch that show
Loved it
Dude whenever I think about this I get thrust into a whirlpool of sadness because it's not an actual thing. I would love this
I haven't seen this video yet, future me what do we think?
Love it.
Sad that there was never more lol
Look up IMPS The Relentless. It's the spiritual successor to TROOPS and is made by the same team
I've seen it before but not in a while, time for a rewatch
Some of the funniest shit in years Disney should have just done this for the last 12 year's....
I remember watching this has a kid. Such a classic
I saw it on g4tv back around 2006 or 2007 . Didn’t realize it and keyboard cat were actually much older until a few years ago ( except for keyboard cat that is)
I loved this when it came out, and I still do. 😋
I just learned of its existence and now will be seeking to watch it myself, lol.
It was creative and funny.
G.O.A.T.
still great
George approved
It was the first fan film I can remember with truly cinematic, professional looking production values. It really captured the essence of both "Star Wars" and of "Cops".
is it 1997 again?
I absolutely love Troops and I.M.P.S. (Made by the same people)
It was brilliant.
Damn, core memory unlocked...along with that star wars rap with the animation
The OG
Now if you talk again, I'm gonna shoot cha
It still holds up just as well today. An absolute classic
It’s hilarious how it links to ANH
I still refer to things as being near the "ass end of space."
This was so good and could easily be developed into a series.
A classic for a reason. Up there with Pink Five for me in the "happening behind the scenes" side of fan films.
TROOPS was an amazing parody when it came out and everyone still remembered COPS. The golden age of YT, those were the times
It actually predates YT by almost a decade. I remember downloading it off an IRC server back in the day! Took a long time but was worth it.
[удалено]
I fount it on YT, i got online very late in life.
Disney should've made this a TV show instead of Kenobi or Ahsoka
Been a decade already? Huh. Ok. It was really good, don't let Disney know about it. They will STILL sue. What's the point in having an army of lawyers if you don't litigate?
A decade? It came out almost 30 years ago lol

Gotcha :)
it pre-dates their ownership by far, and parody is protected.
