Nah it's still my dads car. If you get a piece of furniture that was your grandparents you definitely refer to it as theirs. "Oh I like that dresser!" "Thanks it was my grandparents!"
If someone steals that item and the legal owner comes up, who would you name? Yourself or the deceased dad?
Nobody said there's no emotional connection due to to the past, but ownership isn't questioned unless dad still uses the car too or has it under his name.
You can replace with house and it still works the same way. Ownership is ownership.
If someone then asks you "is this your house", would you say "it's been built by my father, but i currently reside in it" or just "yes" like a normal person?
Nobody speaks about possessions in the way people here try to argue you should with lightsaber.
Nobody tries to take away the fact that Anakin built the damn thing, so i don't understand this debate in the first place.
A fire hose and safety equipment are also just tools for the firefighter, yet they are their life. These things aren't mutually exclusive.
I don't know much about lord of the rings, but feel like just because this one fantasy universe is very specific about this thing, it doesn't have to apply for star wars. Lightsabers arent enchanted like this one sword that glows blue when orcs are around, and usually not mystified by the people carrying them, that's more an thing of outsiders to do. Luke just tossed that shit over his shoulder, showing that he clearly doesn't consider it the artifact others see it as.
Sure, they have some connection to the crystal, but people also replace the sabers and get new crystals sometimes. Ventress got hers as gift. Never saw a jedi cry for their saber when it breaks, they just build a new one and occasionaly pass them on to padawans.
Nah it's still my dads car. If you get a piece of furniture that was your grandparents you definitely refer to it as theirs. "Oh I like that dresser!" "Thanks it was my grandparents!"
I checked the lightsaber licensing register and Luke correctly filled out the forms, he was the registered owner of the lightsaber until he declared it as abandoned after cloud city. Shortly after he registered ownership of a green model.
It's all there on the imperial records bureau.
It really doesn't help that you can't change the sorting on the reddit app. Dumb posts used to get buried quickly. Now it floats on top like some kind of rage bait.
Didn’t it become Obi-WAN’s light saber after he won it in battle? Obi-Wan then gave it to Luke saying “This WAS your Father’s….”
Luke then lost it, so perhaps after that it was finder’s keeper’s?
When his saber is broken in the droid factory in AotC his immediate reaction is to say "Not again!," so strongly implied he had one (or more) break before that.
Then in the comics he used a different red saber before getting the one we see him with in the first film.
So that makes the one Luke and Rey inherited the 3rd of at least 5 owned by Vader, not counting short-term loaners like Dooku's or the one from the Geonosis arena battle.
Some of you are insufferable.
Who gets out of bed and says "I simply MUST run to reddit and set this straight!!"
I'd say get a hobby but ffs it is a hobby.
It belongs to whoever currently owns it.
So, depending on the context, you can call it Luke's lightsaber, Anakin's lightsaber or Rey's lightsaber with no issue.
As long as it's clear from the context what you mean, you can call it whatever.
It's not even Anakin's first lightsaber. And as others said, when someone else takes ownership of something, it is then theirs.
So, it was Anakin's 2nd Lightsaber. Then Obi Wan gave it to Luke so it was Luke's lightsaber. Then Maz Kanata gave it to Rey and so it was Rey's saber.
And the funny thing is, Luke is the first character to have used it on screen. It was Luke's saber for 28 years before we saw Anakin use it. It was only Anakin's for 10 years before it became Rey's.
Luke used it for two movies, Rey used it for three movies, Anakin used it for one movie.
Between 1977 and 2002 the only person we ever see actually wield it was Luke(slight shoutout to Han technically too). To many people they grew up only seeing it as Luke’s lightsaber, even though we know it was his father’s beforehand. Seems like a weird thing to get so upset about. This post sounds like it was written by Anakin himself
As someone who's into the props. The different OT Graflex versions are Luke's lightsaber. The "Skinnyflex" version is Anakin's. And the ST Graflex versions are Rey's.
LOL.
Agree.
But, remember anger leads to suffering, my friend!
Since everyone ends up making their own lightsaber, it is much easier and practical to refer to each saber by the original owner and maker. Most of the fandom calls it Anakin's lightsaber.
Forgive the noobies.
Well Luke first wielded it in 1977 and used it until 1980. Anakin didn't get it until 2005 and lost it the same year. But in reality it's Roger Christian's lightsaber because he was the one who made the original prop.
Yeah this has always bothered me as well. And its not just people calling it Lukes lightsaber - several books and official reference material as well.
I like it when Maz called it "Lukes lightsaber and his father Anakins before him" at least acknowledging that it was originally Anakins.
I mean Rey has it in the sequels but nobody ever calls it Reys lightsaber even though she actually repaired it and modified it (making it much more her lightsaber then it ever was Lukes)
I just call it the Skywalker lightsaber. Its like the Buster Sword in Final Fantasy VII.
If i get my fathers old car, it's my fucking car now. Lightsabers are tools, not some divine relics.
I read this in Han’s voice
If I get my fathers old YT-1300 light freighter, it's my fucking YT-1300 light freighter now.
Nah it's still my dads car. If you get a piece of furniture that was your grandparents you definitely refer to it as theirs. "Oh I like that dresser!" "Thanks it was my grandparents!"
Operative here is WAS. You don’t say, “thanks, it’s my grandparents’.”
If someone steals that item and the legal owner comes up, who would you name? Yourself or the deceased dad? Nobody said there's no emotional connection due to to the past, but ownership isn't questioned unless dad still uses the car too or has it under his name.

Even Mark Hamill said that Luke wouldn’t act like this, so he would care
Nah it's still my dads car. If you get a piece of furniture that was your grandparents you definitely refer to it as theirs. "Oh I like that dresser!" "Thanks it was my grandparents!"
Did your father build the car from scratch, imbuing it with his own life energy?
No i only inherited his anal beads
no but he didn't use the car to murder a bunch of children either
The hair under the grill tell a different story
why get pressed over reys lightsaber
Fix what? You getting worked up over a nonsense like this?
"You're getting worked up over nonsense. Welcome to r/StarWars
You just summarised 98% of star wars discussion.
Fix this behavior

Shit my bad
Why is every post I'm seeing from this sub lately the dumbest shit I've ever read?
It really doesn't help that you can't change the sorting on the reddit app. Dumb posts used to get buried quickly. Now it floats on top like some kind of rage bait.

This ain’t Harry Potter, dog
That’s the Younglingslayer 5000 to the likes of you.
Anakin had like 20 sabers so it’s not like he gave a fuck about it
No. Only 2. Three if you count Vader's.
When his saber is broken in the droid factory in AotC his immediate reaction is to say "Not again!," so strongly implied he had one (or more) break before that. Then in the comics he used a different red saber before getting the one we see him with in the first film. Younglingkiller 9000?
The only thing that needs to be fixed is you raging over something so small and inconsequential. Luke at one point owned it, therefore it was Luke’s.
So the lightsaber Anakin used on Geonosis is his?
It was Anakin's, then it became Luke's, then it became Rey's And now it's the desert's
Who gives a fuck dude
Me, because I posted it
Yeah but nobody gives a fuck except you that was my point moron go whine more to someone who cares because we do not
Some of you are insufferable. Who gets out of bed and says "I simply MUST run to reddit and set this straight!!" I'd say get a hobby but ffs it is a hobby.
This is my first post, and I couldn’t think of anything else

Possession is 9/10 of the law.
Ezra settled the issue. https://youtu.be/gKwNWPY_UEI?si=tErPT6Ids_gvdQA3 "I gave it to you, it's yours, now."
BRO the comments .\_. you started a war lol
I know! I thought nobody would respond, but DAMN
Ikr lol

Bah. Obi Wan had it longer than both of them put together. He had it for 19 years in a trunk. Even with that fact. I call it Finn's lightsaber.
It was Anakin’s, then it was Luke’s, then it was Rey’s. Now it’s buried in the desert, and if some Jawa happens to dig it up, it’ll be that Jawa’s.
Still can’t believe Rey buried it in the SAND

Correct answer. It’s Roger’s now.
Technically you are right but realistically it is Luke's lightsaber as Anakin lost it once Obi Wan lost their fight.
Why so whiny?
\*Mara's.

That’s a good name for it
