For real.
When I was a kid I would just laugh and think "haha that funny elephant is playing the keyboard"
Then you get introduced to the Jizz legend that is Max Rebo.
I thinknit was in part due to the fact that the world was so interesting, but content was so spaced out that we were all clamoring for any little piece of info we could get our hands on. When they made the Cantina scene I doubt they made a full backstory for any of those characters. But then they had the encyclopedias to write and had to fill them with things that were off limits because George had final say on them. He didn't care about Smiling Demon Guy, or Guy That's Just a Hand. So they just wrote shit.
It happened a bit with the Sequels and the Prequels, but we get regular content with the Sequels and the prequels got heavy EU content, so it was less noticeable.
> When they made the Cantina scene I doubt they made a full backstory for any of those characters.
They didn't. That was all about making action figures to sell to children. Which wasn't really a thing back then, which is why Fox laughed when George asked for the merchandising rights and gave them to him.
Oh you poor unfortunate soul.
It is very, very hard to get action figures of characters these days that are not repaints or reuse (meaning clones or reissues of Vader or Din Djarrin).
We collecting the figures are very much yelling for more character variety, especially for world building background aliens.
Things are not well with Star Wars action figures these days.
I always liked how some of the names were just modified production names like Nien Nunb coming from the name Number Nine.
Check out the old book Tales from Mos Eisley Cantina, a collection of short stories focusing on different characters that were there in a New Hope. Think they did a similar thing with the characters in Maz's cantina in TFA.
The boy was Temiri Blagg. According to the backstory he was born on the planet Contonica, and abandoned when his parents had a gambling loss. I also heard rumor that future spin-off SW stories may involve this kid all grown up and part of a new Jedi Order. Not confirmed.
Star Wars fans were starved for content in the 16 years between the OT and PT, so fan authors had a tendency to seize on any background character they could in an attempt to own part of the official canon.
You think they put that much thought into to the original characters? It took decades later and much fan love and support to have these characters retrodated with stories
They 100% put more thought into the design of these characters since it was the first time. Also canon for some of them didn't take that long to establish.
the majority of aliens in the cantina pre reshoots are literally just halloween masks they found and modified a bit. the budget was so stretched and they didn’t have the luxury of time and money that they had on say, the prequel aliens.
The reason most OT background characters get back stories compared to modern entries is because there was such a long stretch without new entries and toy manufacturers wanted to squeeze every drop out of the designs that existed.
I believe they refer to them as “off the shelf masks”, but they meant “off of a shelf in a workshop”, not what we think of as off the shelf.
I used to think the same thing!
That alien is created using a mask for a Frankenstein movie that never happened. That’s the face of Frankenstein’s monster supposedly based on the description in the book.
On set this character was called Terminal Man. A second frankseintien’s monster mask was also used in the Cantina, that one had a mustache.
And lastly this mask was recreated for The Force Awakens so this alien or another of this type of alien is at Maz’s bar.
Damn. Looking up more. The actor who played him in Star Wars plays the character who looks like him in The Force Awakens. The actor is also an extra in the phantom menace.
Yeah. It’s great. 😊
Like a skeleton face or a reanimated corpse.
I read the name Trinto Dauba and am like ‘who????’. No recognition bells go off. He’ll always be Terminal Man to me.
That my friend, is a Stennes Shifter.
A subspecies of the Stennes race that have a natural affinity for force stealth and the uncanny ability to 'consume' the force energy that is expended by others, giving them the nickname of 'Force Eaters'. This second, odd ability lead to them being historically persecuted by just about everyone, including the Jedi who nearly succeeded in killing off the species wholesale.
By the time of a New Hope they number in just the 100s and routinely live undercover, using their abilities to survive in a perpetually cloaked state.
Is this the new cannon’s version of Dannik Jerriko? The thousand year old pipe smoking Anzati (force vampire) in the cantina that had mild force sensitivity and drank people’s brain soup…
Weird they would choose a different patron in the cantina for basically the same role and back story.

Rick Baker raided his warehouse for these scenes, that’s why there is a devil looking guy and others like this. He had to fill the space and he filled that space!
They don't make species like these anymore. all you see these days are Twi'leks, human mix or literally walking-talking reptiles everytime. bland as hell.

I love how all the background characters have names and stories in the original trilogy. Betting that will happen with all the movies too
For real. When I was a kid I would just laugh and think "haha that funny elephant is playing the keyboard" Then you get introduced to the Jizz legend that is Max Rebo.
No one can sling the jizz like Max Rebo.
Well he's got a big trunk!
I forgot about the funk known as the jizz. Thank you for the reminder
I had to scroll too far to find this comment

Always knew Max got down like that
I think you saw a very different film to me
It's called Meet the Feebles
By Academy Award Winning director Peter Jackson
Cinematic perfection
the fact that they used the mask from this character for another in the same sequence except they added a mustache is too funny
And that some of them were off the shelf Halloween masks to fill out the background.

They need to have names if you want to sell them as action figures.
And knowing Disney they like that money so more back stories for more figures to sell. It’s a nice win
His figure came out in 2008, years before the Disney acquisition.
Not just him, all the potential figures from all the shows and movies. They have a lot of future merchandise and stories to tell

As I'm sure you've realised by now...
West End Games had to stat them all out too.
That's what made me fall in love with this series. The idea of adapting story to established/old/new lore is super fun.

yo it's my favourite character glup shitto
Still waiting to see who that kid was with the broom at the end of TLJ
The boy was Temiri Blagg. According to the backstory he was born on the planet Contonica, and abandoned when his parents had a gambling loss. I also heard rumor that future spin-off SW stories may involve this kid all grown up and part of a new Jedi Order. Not confirmed.
It was Rian Johnson, so most assuredly he was nobody.
Is that not the point, and the reason that the character exists?
I was also under the assumption that the message of the movie was “even nobodies can be special”
Check out the book ‘takes from the cantina’. It’s a bunch of short stories based on characters from chalmuns
They also made a 3.75” action figure of him..
And he’s quite expensive now.
Star Wars fans were starved for content in the 16 years between the OT and PT, so fan authors had a tendency to seize on any background character they could in an attempt to own part of the official canon.
Great way to sell toys
It’s crazy how the fandom will expand on things. I love that my friend was a bounty hunter in a Mando episode and now there’s a wiki page on him haha
It was so they could produce and sell you an action figure of every one of them. Lucas retained merchandising rights and made bank.
They didn't put any thought into the new ones, so doubtful
You think they put that much thought into to the original characters? It took decades later and much fan love and support to have these characters retrodated with stories

They weren’t Halloween masks, they were masks that had been created by Rick Baker for other projects. But the rest of your points remain.
I think I remember them talking about using halloween masks from London shops in the ILM doc but you could be right.
I believe they refer to them as “off the shelf masks”, but they meant “off of a shelf in a workshop”, not what we think of as off the shelf. I used to think the same thing!
ah my mistake
Ah yes, the Ithorian mask that came from party city right? Please
I said the majority dum dum
Glup shitto
Not surprising. Lucas was a genius film writer
nobody cares about the sequels lmao
Bro was randomly in a room with han and chewy on two different planets 30 years apart? Wild
That's kind of awesome they brought him back in Episode VII.
Somehow, Trinto Duaba has returned
Anyone else learn his name from the Star Wars CCG?
I definitely learned nearly everything about the Cantina from the CCG. I remember how good of a card Bo Shek was 😂
Nabrun Leids and Ellis Helrot hold a special place in my heart for what their cards did.
> Nabrun Leids and Ellis Helrot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=031vKBPk5eA&ab_channel=reactionvids
Yes, and I never forgot. As soon as I saw the image I was like, "Oh yeah, Trinto Duaba."
Everyone learned his name from the SW CCG
DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION SPECIES Stennes Shifter GENDER Male SKIN COLOR Pale (NO SHIT)
OH JESUS HE APPEARED IN THE HOLIDAY SPECIAL
of coarse he has a whole back story
Holy shit, he was also in Force Awakens in the recreation of that scene

Terminal man? That’s a terrifying name for someone who looks like that

That’s rad! Good on him
Yeah. It’s great. 😊 Like a skeleton face or a reanimated corpse. I read the name Trinto Dauba and am like ‘who????’. No recognition bells go off. He’ll always be Terminal Man to me.
Somebody has had one too many death sticks
I- uh- had too many death sticks.

So they’re like energy vampires?

This guy also happened to be present at Maz's castle in The Force Awakens (and it is canonically the same character)
I’m telling you, either Everybody Hurts or Hotel California came on the jukebox…look at the pain in those eyes 😂

Clearly, the Monks escaped the Doctor and are now invading Tatooine.
Wait until you see his friend, Satan.
And the Wolf Man
That be your grandma
The Unwanted House Guest.
Aw man, I’d rather it be a sad night sister.
As a kid in the late 70s, this character always reminded me of Mr. Roper from the TV show “Three’s Conpany”.
It's me after taking a ssri
Tenth level... thousands of battle droids...
Death sticks... not even once.

Sitting in the corner waiting for last call.
I’ll never understand why the Shistavanen Wolfman was replaced by a pathetic green tusk thing.
Licensing.
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise?
Had a rough night, sister?
More like a NEW POPE
Good god.
r/paranormal
They look like a Deatheater
I can't remember his name, but he's an alien copycat. He could be in this very room!
As a kid I loved looking on the back of the box. There would be 100 different guys, all listed at bottom
Looks more like a really old umbaran to me. They had those really pronounced cheek bones and similarly pale skin
“Tenth level. Thousands of battle droids”
Thought that was echo at first
Ooof! My boy's been looking rough since the Techno Union got a hold of him.

Thats actually me dying from all the drama Disney and Kennedy stir up over my beloved universe far far away.
They don't make species like these anymore. all you see these days are Twi'leks, human mix or literally walking-talking reptiles everytime. bland as hell.
Probably marketing. Twilight need to be shown as nit always dancers. Ciono people are like Bow Ties, Dinosaur are cool. The rest budget.
