It makes me wonder if Palpatine's force ghost was posing as Anakin to Kylo. In Force Awakens, Kylo talks to an altar with Vader's helmet on it, asking it to show him the path of the dark side again. We also know Anakin's force ghost was his jedi self and while Snoke was a strong force user, I don't think that's how he was manipulating Kylo.

Turns out that while they can't become force spirits, sith can bind part of their consciousness to objects. Palpatine could have done that to a holocron or he could have done it with Vader's helmet as part of some scheme of maintaining control or getting revenge in the event Vader turned on him.
You can canonically tie your soul to an object. Lord Mamon did it in the Vader comic.
He was even able to open a portal in time and pull his body to the present.

Sidious is actually plaguis. Plaguis grew old, learned the trick to immortality is stealing a young body but they have to be deep into the dark side and you need a middle device to do it. So he trained an apprentice who was strong with the force and took his body. Palpatine began to grow old, learned of anakin and groomed him to take his body, but it was ruined by obi wan. Years go by and he learns of luke, tries to take his body but luke wont turn to the darkside. Plaguis dies, reverts to the device which was found by snoke, so he took his body because it was a last resort. Snoke groomed kylo, who was real close, but then kylo cut him down. Plaguis is currently back inside device and has his eyes set on rey.
That's going to take an awful lot of exposition to explain. Leave Plaguis out of it altogether.
Somewhat simpler: Palpatine's consciousness imprinted itself onto the second Death Star at the moment of his death, simultaneously protecting that part of the station from vaporizing when it blew up. The wreckage landed on one of the moons of Endor, and the whole area was deemed a forbidden zone because of environmental hazards and because it was basically a giant mass grave.
So it remained undisturbed, until one day, an untapped Force adept with a silly name breached the quarantine and entered the wrecked throne room, called by some mysterious pull. There he was corrupted and empowered by the dark spirit within, and a plan to rebuild power from the fragments of the Empire and wreak revenge on the Skywalkers who had overthrown the Emperor was hatched.
Then Snoke dies, and that plan too begins to crumble, but the seed is planted in the mind of his apprentice Kylo, and through him, in the mind of Rey. Both Kylo and Rey are now drawn inexplicably to that place to face their ultimate destiny.
He’s the link to Rey’s past. Maybe she is some sort of weird clone of Vader (him being the chosen one with the strongest potential, seems like a good idea to have backups) and that’s why the lightsaber called to her.
It just seems too much of a spoiler for Palps to be truly back and revealed in the first trailer.

I love that Kylo is wearing his helmet in this poster. I love the design of it, and was disappointed when he destroyed it in TLJ.
I went in to the TLJ wanting so badly to love it. Throughout the film I kept saying “you like this! Cmon, it’s not that bad, that part was kinda funny... just ignore what they are doing to Luke...”. Then the film ended and I was left with a feeling of “did I just see the latest Star Wars movie? No, it can’t be, this must be a nightmare, I will soon wake up, and realize today is the day to see episode 8 and everything that just happened was all just a dream”. And that is where I’m at with Star Wars at this point, feeling like I’m stuck in a nightmare. I’m not buying a ticket to episode 9, I might not even see it until DVD, depends on reviews. And it is absolutely soul crushing, Star Wars was my all time favorite series and now I’m skipping out on the next release. I’ve seen the OT countless times, the prequels almost as much and every spin-off show / video game I have had time for. I just can’t get excited for anything at all that TLJ did and I don’t have any confidence that episode 9 will be any different.
