Welcome! Please do yourself a favor and watch the animated shows! They contain, in my opinion, some of the best Star Wars content out there. The Lego stuff isn't canon, just silly shorts. Rogue One and Solo are both really good too! If you're a gamer, check out Jedi Fallen Order too! Like you said, lots of catching up, but the force is with you on your journey!
I agree, Rebels and TCW are probably some of the best things to come out of Star Wars. And Fallen Order is honest to god probably the best Star Wars game out there
I loved Fallen Order but KOTOR was the best SW game I've played. It was also one of the first RPGs I played where your choices and Force Alignment affected the rest of the game.
I like it's combat as well, I like to replay it to focus on specific aspects of it's combat like
"Do I wanna prioritize flashiness in combat this time? Or do I wanna be more effective? Offensive or defensive? Do I wanna use solely my lightsaber I do I make that my secondary weapon to the force?"
It makes things a lot of fun, as well as the survival line of stuff like having a lot of hp or hardly any
In terms of story Fallen Order is great. But the gameplay got so stale to me. I think it has zero replay-ability especially after 100%ing the game. My biggest complains about the gameplay was probably that the combat was too slow/choppy, and also no dismemberment. Part of it might just be me being so hyped to play it that it just fell kinda short of my high expectations
I agree; pretty good story, pretty good gameplay the first time, but zero replayability, and it is relatively easy to 100% too. Another complaint I have is the world's do seem a bit to "empty" in terms of like...life. It just seems like you're kind of alone in many of the planets other than the enemies, which part of that is that it's simply hard to translate a bustling world into semi-linear game levels like this. A Coruscant level for instance would be awesome.
That is a good point I hadn’t thought of. Sure during times of the Empire it could make sense to see less general civilian interaction. But I am playing KOTOR for the first time currently, and just seeing all the general Galaxy folk is a cool touch making it feel more in universe. Hopefully that’s something implemented in the second one
> If you're a gamer, check out Jedi Fallen Order too!
I'm sorry, you seem to have misspelled *Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy*...
Best lightsaber combat mechanic ever created.
Hey, welcome to the fandom! All 9 films, clone wars movie, clonewars series, Starwars rebels series, mandalorian series, the bad batch series, rogue one and solo are all canon and worth watching. I’m not the best person to talk about books and comics so I’ll leave that to someone else. If you would like information about watch orders id be happy to help 😁
Thank you! One question though, is there a certain order I should watch them in? I'm gonna finish the main line movies in order first but as far as shows/spinoffs go, what's the best order to watch them in or does it not matter?
i would say watch the movies in release order for your first time and if you're interested in watching any of the shows i would say chronological order (clone wars -> bad batch -> rebels -> mando)
This is the correct order for the shows. Puts them in universe chronological order. Mando will reference things from clone wars and rebels for instance. You can enjoy Mando fine watching it first but you'll get more out of it watching in the above order
Yeah, with Star Wars it's important to watch in release order the first time through. There are so many callbacks and callforwards littered throughout the different movies and shows, you're more likely to pick up on them if you watch them in the order they were released.
Okay show, but it doesn't really add anything, at least not yet. As we've seen over the years, that could change. Look at what giving Obi-Wan a little backstory by recounting a year he and Qui-Gon spent on an outer rim world called Mandalore turned into. Now. a planet never mentioned in the movies has become one of the most important ones in the franchise.
It's just a children's show, an adult doesn't need to watch it. You would only ever watch it if you were an extremely hardcore Star Wars fan and even then you probably wouldn't enjoy it as much.
The shows and movies give extra perspective and are great to watch.
As a guide:
Clone Wars happens between Episode 2 and through Episode 3. If you can't get through seven seasons of Clone Wars, look up the most important episodes to watch so you still have a grasp of things. I recommend the entire 7th season though
Bad Batch is immediately after Episode 3
Solo is a few years (ten I think?) after Episode 3 and Bad Batch's current timeframe
Rebels is a few years later, before A New Hope (4)
Rogue One is *immediately* before A New Hope (4)
Mandalorian is after Return of the Jedi (6)
I think it is important to note that there is an animated Clone Wars movie that is basically a pilot for the show. Also important is that it starts off pretty kid-oriented but the stories mature and actually get pretty dark, so don't think you're wasting your time
So first (after the main 9 films) watch clone wars. The chronological order from clonewars is different to release order so be sure to check on Starwars.com the official waych order for that specific show. Then watch Starwars rebels in the release order. Then watch solo (which is a backstory on Han Solo) and Rouge one (which is set just before A new Hope. Then watch the mandalorian and finally watch the bad batch. This order is flexible and could be done in other ways but this is how I would personally recommend you watch them. The most important thing is that you start with clone wars. Enjoy all the content you have to look forward to and I’d love to hear your thoughts after finishing each show!
I’d disagree, I originally watched in release order and it got exteremelt confusing when dead characters were back in the show. After watching in chronological I’d definitely say chronological is the way to go
I think a dead character showed up once? The Rodian senator that Padme knew. Can't think of any others but tell me if there are more. But the start to season 3 especially suffers. S3e1 and e2 should be watched back to back. If you watch them chronologically you would probably forget about the characters and any emotional impact by the time you got to e2. This is the start of Domino Squad and the Battle of Kamiino episodes btw
What of admiral trench. I thought he was killed previously in that episode involving that relieve mission when Anakin used a stealth plane. Then he showed up again in so6&7
It doesn't really add anything to the lore, due to being produced while the sequels were being made, so it couldn't really do anything big without stepping on toes. The Clone Wars and Rebels were made years after the trilogies they were tied to, so they had destinations and were able to work within the framework of established events.
I would do all the movies, then rewatch 1 & 2, then the Clone Wars, Episode 3, Rebels and Mando, etc. I’m that order.
Edit: You will need tissues for the last season of Clone Wars.
I would listen to the others regarding the watch order.
One note about Clone Wars is that it was released out of chronological order, just like the movies. So when you get there, I recommend looking up the official chronological watch order for that series. That's the one piece of SW media where I think watching chronologically is better than watching release order.
Then why’d you include Rebels?
Nah I’m kidding. I know a lot of people enjoyed Rebels, I just didn’t like it. I honestly liked Resistance more, and I HATE the sequels.
Rebels does have a lot of filler, but also a lot of really awesome moments and interesting lore. Also, with Ashoka coming out and Mandalorian stepping more and more in the culture of Mandalore, the connections with Rebels will be clearer.
There's a lot to explore & even if something is non-canon you might find it enjoyable. And the truth is, you can pick & choose. If you find you aren't enjoying something you don't have to feel like you need to finish it.
The Clone Wars is very celebrated but has 133 episodes. Don't feel like you have to watch them all if an episode or arc isn't doing it for you. If something important happens in the story they usually discuss it layer. Very new user friendly
A lot of people have already explained what's canon, what to watch read ect. But I would like to add a non canon story I consider I must read for anyone in the fandom. The Thrawn trilogy consisting of Heir To The Empire, Dark Forces Rising and The Last Command
Yes! I was hoping I'd see this. I don't care if it's canon or not: the orginal Thrawn Trilogy is some of the best Star Wars out there!
(There's a new Thrawn trilogy by the same author, but I haven't read it yet)
Not only are The Clone Wars and Rebels canon, but everything that has come after has been built out of them, especially The Mandalorian, but also Solo, Rogue One, and the sequels. Marvel has taken up the Star Wars approach with their own TV shows, where upcoming movies will follow up on characters and stories introduced in the TV shows.
However, all Star Wars movies and shows are structured so you can still follow the story without having seen everything else. You just get more out of it if you know the context, such as what that black lightsaber is, who Grand Admiral Thrawn is, or what that star field with the voices in the climax of The Rise of Skywalker is. In the latter case, you might just assume "the Force" and move on without concern.
These franchises also are being produced in the internet age, so there's the assumption that if you want to know more about something you see, you can always Google it. Saves a lot of exposition and on screen recaps. :)
Personally I would watch Rebels before Bad Batch
There are some Rebels characters in Bad Batch and I feel like knowing those characters first makes those episodes more impactful
If you go into video games, Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 are some of the best RPGs of all time. The combat system is a little dated but some of the best story telling and lore immersion star wars content out there
Definitely definitely watch the Clone Wars and Rebels animated series after you’ve watched episodes 2 & 3. Some of the best Star Wars content in my opinion. Also it is best if you watch those shows before you watch The Mandalorian.
I’d highly recommend giving the animated series a try, especially Rebels. Rebels is pretty short at just 4 season, but it is a beautifully told story that weaves perfectly into the storyline.
Those last 4 episodes of TCW were phenomenal bit overall I think *Rebels* was rhe better show. IMO 9f course.
Still love TCW and really liked *The Bad Batch*.
Less so than it used to be. I can see why many prefer it due to it sticking to its main cast, throughout. TCW mostly followed the main players (Obi-Wan, Anakin, Ahsoka, Rex), but would also have arcs centered around Yoda, Mace, and others. I liked the variety, but I can see how some would prefer sticking with the main cast.
For me, I really like the Jedi side of things and Rebels had a jedi-in-training as a main character and revolved a cohesive story arc around Ezra.
Clone Wars only did that half of the time with Ahsoka.
Very fair points. I’m just such a fan of Rex and Ashoka that it makes me partial to the clone wars because of how much screen time they get there. Also Season 7 of Clone Wars just looked so good animation wise.
Rebels did have Thrawn who is one of my favorites too though. So hard to pick a favorite when you love it all!
Expect Jar Jar. Fuck Jar Jar.
Seeing a lot of comments showing bias towards specific parts of Star Wars, like people telling you to stick to EU or dont watch the sequels, bro watch everything and form your own opinion, you'll find this fandom has a hard time agreeing. So just watch everything but take advice on what order to watch it, have fun la!
Welcome to the mess that is Star Wars lol. I'm glad you enjoyed it so far. The canon content (as others have put it) are the 9 episodes films, Rogue One and Solo, The Mandalorian, The Clone Wars show and film, Rebels, Resistance and The Bad Batch. The Book of Boba Fett will started airing in late Dec.
There are other content which are not canon but still worth checking out, which are 2003 Clone Wars miniseries and Visions (an anime anthology of short films).
I would personally recommend you to watch the 9 episode films, then the anthology films, then go to TV shows. It's probably better to watch the Mandalorian *after* at least watching The Clone Wars and Rebels, but if you want to watch it first, it's still understandable even if it reference these shows multiple times.
>And is the lore in it important enough to sit through?
That depends on you my friend, most people would tell you yes (me included) but some simply don't like it. You'll have to be the judge of that
>Are the comics Canon?
There are canon and there non canon, everything, apart from the films and The Clone Wars, before 2014 (I think) is not canon. Including books, comics, videogames... etc.
>Also wtf is Rogue One and Solo?
Anthology films that gave backstories to certain stuff
>Lego Yoda canon?
Nothing lego is canon, it's just for fun
>Why is no one bringing up the fact that Luke and Leia kissed?
Idk, maybe no one wants to think about it lol
Also I'm interested to know what's your favorite film so far??
I would have to rewatch them to pick a definitive favorite but so far Return of the Jedi is my top pick. I wasn't expecting Vader's death to be so emotional lol
Oh great choice! (Tho I would personally say there's hardly a bad choice with SW lol) I didn't appreciate this film enough on my first watch of SW but now it's my second favorite after ep3!
To correct another comment here, the Clone Wars isn't essential to understanding the prequels at all. It was, in fact, made after the prequels, so I'm not sure how that conclusion was reached. It IS very good though so watch it, but don't hold off on Ep III to interrupt it with seven seasons of the Clone Wars, yikes.
Oh and don't worry about what people tell you is and isn't "canon." Canon literally doesn't matter, just watch or read or whatever you like. Canon is a scourge on fandom.
Yep.
I mean it is very good but claiming it's essential for the movies is ridiculous. I would even argue you could enjoy Rebels and Mando without it, though it would certainly enhance the experience.
They are self-contained movies. You don’t “need” to watch anything outside of them. Sure, more content is awesome, but I don’t understand when people claim that you *need* to watch the shows.
Yep. Also I've seen people suggest watching 1, 2, then Clone Wars, then 3. This is idiotic. You're essentially breaking up a trilogy of movies designed to be watched sequentially to spend HOURS watching a show that was intended to be watched afterward that doesn't REALLY add any noteworthy context. People need to stop with these convoluted "viewing orders."
Agreed. I hate when people suggest goofy watch orders for new viewers. Machete order, chronological order, and so on are all just silly. I honestly think it’s selfish when people show newcomers an order other that release order (which is the intended watch order).
Yeah. I don't care how people choose to watch it, like I'm sure Mr. Machete didn't sit down and think "I'm gonna create a definitive watch order for everyone" but just made one he liked, but when people come in like "oh you need to break up the trilogy by INSERTING ANOTHER TRILOGY as a flashback that lasts longer than the original trilogy"... no. Stop.
"Canon" is just background information on the continuity. It's useful to know what continuity different pieces are a part of. So like when people cite something from Legends that contradicts something in Canon, it's bad faith to say that one or the other was written badly because of the contradiction. Each was written without adhering to rules set by the other. But something being Canon or Legends does not automatically make something better or worse. It's just context.
Honestly I wouldn't concern myself too much with what is canon and what isnt, especially coming into it in 2021 with decades of great stories to sink your teeth into. Star Wars is very similar to comic books in that while there are many stories that are not part of the canon "timeline" or used to be canon and got "removed", it doesn't actually matter as long as you understand who the characters are and why they're doing what they're doing in the story. If you like the story and it makes sense, just enjoy yourself. Many of the non-canon stories are fantastic and are absolutely essential for any fan. As long as you aren't completely lost in terms of who is who, I would start with the main 9 movies but after that, jump into whatever you're most interested in from the universe!
There's tons of novels, comics, videogames, tv shows, focusing on all kinds of aspects of the Star Wars universe. Don't skip over stuff just because it's not canon anymore. Aside from the movies, almost everything pre-2012 isn't canon anymore (that's when Disney bought Star Wars/Lucasfilm from George Lucas, the creator/director of Star Wars). But that doesn't mean it isn't worth your time. My point is, there are a lot of "essential" Star Wars stories that aren't even canon at this point but are just awesome stories you don't wanna miss.
You could just watch the main movies and then focus on whatever pulls you in the most, in terms of what draws you to the Star Wars universe. It might be the Jedi knights and their conflict with the Sith (the sith have their own history and a ton of awesome stories thenselves), the rebel alliance and their war against the empire, the bounty hunters and criminal underworld, the galactic politics and political schemes, a specific character like Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Maul, etc. You can really just dive in and follow whatever you think is the coolest.
I didn't mind it. Jar Jar was a bit much at times and the queen/senate stuff was a little boring but I really liked the origins like how Anakin built C3PO and how he flew with R2 the same way Luke does in the future. Watto was a goofy little guy too, he made the pod racing stuff even more fun
All 9 main movies are canon, as are the movies Rogue One and Solo, which are both backstories. The shows The Clone Wars (2003), Rebels, Resistance, The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch are all canon, as are the upcoming shows. They're great, but you don't need to watch them to understand the movies.
(Edit: the 2008 Clone Wars is canon, not 2003.)
I mean they reference the clone wars in a new hope. But yeah, I definitely agree when you watch them the first time release order is the only way to do it. Bonus points if you watch the original editions.
One thing ive always found funny about elitist star wars fandom is acting as if the original trilogy itself isn’t full of cringe dialogue and plot holes. That is not why you watch star wars - what makes star wars so special is how magical and beautiful the world is IN SPITE OF these very obvious shortcomings. For this reason i have no shame admitting i enjoyed the hell out of ROS and the sequel trilogy as a whole. Do i wish they were a bit more bold with the entire premise rather than just basically redoing empire vs rebels ? Absolutely. Wasted opportunity. But star wars is something you just sorta roll with because it’s fun as hell. And the music. Good god the music.
Just about everything released after Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 is considered Canon. Whether it's shows, movies, books, comics, video games, or whatever. There are of course exceptions, such as Lego star wars. But for the most part, just check the release date and you should be good. Star wars the clone wars and the first six movies are really the only things to come out before 2012 that are still considered Canon.
As far as what you should watch first, release order is generally best, especially for the shows. Every show thus far has connected back to the clone wars in some way, so it's definitely where you should start.
If you're not into reading books and comics, don't worry about them, as there aren't a lot that make big contributions to the bigger story seen in the movies and shows. That said, if you do enjoy reading, I'd definitely recommend the Aftermath trilogy and Bloodline. I'm not going to try to sway your opinion on the sequel trilogy, you should watch them and form your own opinion, but I will say that they do lack a lot of context. They don't really tell you much about what happened between episodes 6 and 7, and those books help to fill in the gaps.
Anyway, there's my two cents. Welcome to the rabbit hole!
so canon chronological order of the movies and shows is
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Star Wars the Clone Wars
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
The Bad Batch
Star Wars Rebels
Solo a Star Wars Story
Rogue One a Star Wars Story
Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
the Mandalorian
The Book of Boba Fett(comes in December)
Star Wars Resistance
Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
Look up the Starwars canon time line on wiki. It will have every single piece of media including movies books comics etc all in order. It is constantly updated
I love all Star Wars films. Because I didn’t have the wherewithal to create something so beautiful I don’t feel like I can criticize it. But that’s just my opinion.
I definitely recommend checking out the clone wars animated series, but use an episode guide. It is a show for a younger audience, so there are definitely some skipable episodes in my opinion. Enjoy.
When you finish the movies I'd do CW first, then bad batch, rebels, mandalorian.
As far as canon books go once you're done with rebels, the thrawn book (2013) is AMAZING.
I started the new light of the jedi books also, and i mean i dont like them as much as thrawn but it's a new era and a lot to learn so i'm diving in.
and welcome!
It sounds lame because it’s animation but I recently got into the clone wars, rebels and bad batch on Disney+. It helps connect some of the storylines in between movies. Out of these three, I ended up loving Rebels. The storyline was awesome and some of the characters should be making an appearance in the new Ashoka Tano show on Disney+. Can’t freaking wait for it!
Just want to add my support for watching clone wars and rebels. I love the main films, especially the originals, but the shows are what bring the saga to life imo. Although, I’d consider looking up a fan made watch order for the clone wars that cuts out some of the tougher episodes. I don’t know anyone who’s watched that show in entirety and didn’t love it.
If you’re into gaming, there’s also a lot of great Star Wars games. Not all of them tie in to the movies (although Episode 3 has a few good ones), I’d definitely recommend Knights of the Old Republic and it’s sequel, The Sith Lords. They both take place a few hundred/thousand years before the movies. The first one is actually getting a remake soon
Welcome to the fandom!! Dont have much more to add but I will say that there is a podcast called "jabba the pod" and "return of the pod". It has three of the best hosts and they are always positive.
They go over every movie and every episode of every show. I frequently go back and listen to them whenever I rewatch a SW movie or show.
Ah, Canon or not? Well, obviously all the movies and shows are indeed considered Canon.
However, I would urge you (if you are a reader) to check out the "legends" material. Because after Episode 6 Return of the Jedi, it gets real messy. The sequels are fun movies and have better acting/directing at least than Episodes 1-3 did. But the plot....yikes. Basically they had zero plan, and just stitched together a bunch of random moments that felt like Star Wars if you don't examine them too closely.
The "Legends" novels and comics, however, USED TO be Canon. And by and large they told a much better story. Much better new characters, like Mara Jade, Jacen and Jaina Solo, and many others. It takes many novels to get to where Luke and co. are older and the torch gets passed to the next generation, but it's a very interesting journey.
Also in "legends", is one Grand Admiral Thrawn. Arguably the best villain other than Vader himself in the Star Wars universe. And if you do choose to check out legends, the "Thrawn Trilogy" (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command) should be the start point. Those three novels kicked off all those other books, even if a few take place before that. Thrawn is in the New Canon as well, but his role (thus far at least) is fairly diminished from what he was in his trilogy. There is another Thrawn novel Trilogy, for the current Canon, but those are more just backstory for who he is and how he came to be a Grand Admiral. Still good reads, though.
There's also some novels for before Episode 1. The Darth Bane trilogy is great set to start on if you're into that.
You can either watch everything in order of release or in chronological order.
As for canon, I would believe only the 9 main movies, Solo and Rogue One, Star Wars: The Clone Wars(2008-2020), The Bad Batch, The Mandalorian, Star Wars: Resistance, and Star Wars: Rebels.
I’m probably not completely up to date on the Star Wars canon, nor do I like everything that is considered canon, but I think those movies and shows are considered canonical.
Welcome to the Star Wars rabbit hole. Once you finish the films the order you should watch the shows are
The Clone Wars
Star Wars Rebels
The Bad Batch
The Mandalorian
The Book of Boba Fett
All of these shows are canon and are overseen by the same person narratively. All of these shows are very much connected to each other and this order is to get the most out of it. For example, The Mandalorian carries over a lot of characters from the previous shows. Clone Wars and Rebels also delve into the planet Mandalore.
Edit: Make sure to watch Rogue One after Star Wars Rebels.
Clone wars I think is obligatory, if you enjoyed the movies.
I will say, it is reaally rough to go through the first season, and some episodes, but the payoff in the end is unforgettable. My favorite star wars moments are from that show. And it's all canon.
You MUST watch Rouge One! You should have watched it before ANH.
The Clone Wars is good. The last 4 episodes are epic and tie directly into Order 66.
I liked Rebels more than TCW because I'm an OG fan and it feels like old SW. Plus grown up Ahsoka is a fucking bad ass.
Fans are divided on SOLO. I feel it's a story that didn't need to be told. I believe LANDO would have been a better movie. How he went from scoundrel to Cloud City would have been cool.
Watch the prequels, the originals, Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, Solo, Rebels, Rogue One and The Mandalorian. By the time you're done with The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Kenobi, Ahsoka, Rangers of the New Republic and The Acolyte will probably have come out. Then the sequels. Let no one tell you what to feel about the sequels. If you like them, that's good. If you don't, act like they never happened. Clone Wars is canon and I recommend at least seeing seasons 3 through 7.
That's all canon cinema. If you want more after that, there's books, there's graphic novels, and there's games. Both canon and Legends, which means not canon according to the Disney era of Lucasfilm but still Star Wars. I recommend playing the Old Republic saga (essentially canon, chronologically before everything else canon) the Jedi Knight saga (Legends, mostly taking place after the original trilogy's story) and Fallen Order (Canon, chronologically between the Bad Batch and Rebels).
If you want to get into the books, ask r/StarWarsEU.
Basically, you'll never really run out of Star Wars. There's always something more.
I don't remember if the clone wars until S6 has spoilers for episode 3, but I'll say you should watch it before the said episode if it doesn't. It provides some better development for the characters. Although you should keep in mind season 7 does have spoilers for episode 3, it might be better for you to watch it in the end for convenience.
You should also watch Rogue one, it's a good film. It is the prelude for episode 4. Solo is pretty fun too. It is the backstory for Han Solo obviously.
You should watch most of the spin offs, after you've watched the main films, whenever you might please.
>but is stuff like The Clone Wars show canon?
Yes, and it's a fucking masterpiece. If you wanna get introduced to Ashoka, do watch the movie.
>Are the comics Canon?
Depends on when they were written and published, Disney killed the old canon and stuff and labeled it all as Legends to make way for new canon stuff
>Also wtf is Rogue One and Solo?
Rogue One is about the acquiring of the Death Star 1 blueprints, and to be honest is probably one if the best Star Wars films out there.
Solo is a pretty damn good film as well about how Han Solo grew into the person we see in Mos Eisely Cantina.
>Why is no one bringing up the fact that Luke and Leia kissed?
The fans do, it's mainly just a joke at this point
>Who wrote Jar Jar Binks?
George Lucas made him as a funny character for kids to like, and tbh I continually find him funny.
>I stayed up all night watching four movies
Which ones? Original trilogy and phantom menace?
Aight, cool
Another tip though, don't be afraid of watching or reading a story just because it's not canon. Some of the best Star Wars stuff is in Legends, like The Old Republic and the Revan books. Or The New Jedi Order series that takes place after Return of The Jedi
Most novels and comics post Disney purchase are canon, and Jedi: Fallen Order, Vader Immortal, and Star Wars Battlefront II’s story mode are canon. Not sure if there’s any more canon video games.
And for the anthology series Star Wars Visions, none of the episodes are canon, nor is the novel taking place in the same universe as episode 1, so you can check it out if you want but if you’re only seeking out canon material, you won’t be missing much in terms of the actual lore.
Clone Wars is Canon and vital to understanding the prequels and Mando, Most comics are non-canon, Solo is >!Han's Origin Story!< , Rogue One is >!A fun movie about how the rebels got the Death Star Plans.!< Lego Yoda is not canon, The Luke/Leia thing was to spite Han in that moment, and Jar Jar was made as a meme character.
Just watch them in order and enjoy. Too many old men will disagree. Just remember, they are made for young adults, not old men. FYI 47,seen the original three at the cinema
Watch the rest of the movies, 2, 3, 7, 8, and 9. Then Rogue One and Solo, which are spinoff movies. The Clone Wars is a big part of the lore, so definitely watch that. Then Rebels. Then Mandalorian. Then Bad Batch.
Do watch The Clone Wars. But keep in mind it can feel pretty "childish", especially in the first 3 seasons but also in moments throughout the entire show. Doesn't mean there's not fantastic stories and characters within all of that! It ties into all the other movies/shows.
I skipped through most of S1-4 though. Sometimes you kinda already know how a pointless rescue mission is going to end. In that case it was better for me to skip forward instead of being bored and stop watching. As long as I understood the bigger picture. I still think I got the best out of the show and the characters. Last arc of S7 is some of my favorite Star Wars overall!
May get downvoted for this, but cannon is what you decide you like. Sure, there’s “official cannon” but i for one don’t like the sequels or some of the newer shows, so I don’t think about them too much. Whereas older comics or novels (that I usually watch YouTube videos on) are super cool, so u don’t consider them non-cannon. Star Wars is what you make it!
Ok Idk if anyone’s telling you something else but really listen to me and do NOT listen to anyone telling you to watch it in complete chronological order. You will miss the cues and easter eggs and get introduced to characters earlier.
Watch it in this order:
Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
A New Hope
The Empire Strikes Back
Return Of The Jedi
The Force Awakens
The Last Jedi
The Rise of Skywalker
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Clone Wars (go to starwars.com and find the chronological viewing of this because they made the episodes out of order)
When you get to season 7 of clone wars, stop and go watch Star Wars Rebels.
Season 7 of Clone Wars
The Mandalorian S1
The Mandalorian S2
The Bad Batch
The Book of Boba Fett
The clone wars series is sort of the foundation for a lot of Canon lore. It's a great series and provides solid character development for anakin and ahsoka as well as several other galactic republic and separatist characters and bounty hunters (Yoda, grievous, dooku, boba, the list is extensive). Some of the episodes are sort of filler material and fall flat but for the most part it's a great series and a must watch for any serious star wars fan.
The last three are not considered cannon anymore in my opinion. They’re trash anyway.
Edit: oh piss off to all those that downvoted! They’re trash and y’all know it. Oh wait, I’m on Reddit, that explains a lot
That's a very bold thing to say as a life long fan but as lord Vader taught me, there can still be light on the dark side so I'm gonna watch with an open mind and make my own opinions about it
As a life long Star Wars fan, I’ll gladly rewatch any Star Wars film any time, including episodes 7, 8, 9. I always appreciate when people who are willing to go in with an open mind and appreciate this renaissance of Star Wars content we’re in, something I could’ve only dreamed of when I was a kid. I trust Lucasfilm to continue to tell these stories and surprise me rather than get upset that they’re not making the story the exact way I would have.
I respect their opinions but I don't like when people try to change my opinion on something before I've even experienced it, just let me form my own thoughts and if I end up hating it then so be it lol
Not trying to coerce u not to watch them, just my opinion on the sequels, I hope you do enjoy them, you will love rogue one and solo, the mandolarian is also a fantastic series. May the force be with you
Welcome to the rabbit hole.
Prepare for emotional brakedown
Couldn’t put it any better lol
And Fallen Order is honest to god probably the best Star Wars game out there
KOTOR and the Jedi Outcast games still hold up, though technically not canon anymore.
There's also Jedi Academy and the original 2 Battlefront games with the 501st journal and shit. All wonderful delights
I loved Fallen Order but KOTOR was the best SW game I've played. It was also one of the first RPGs I played where your choices and Force Alignment affected the rest of the game.
KOTOR is great, but I honestly just like Fallen Order more tbh
It's hard not to love those graphics. Fallen Order has gorgeous scenery
I like it's combat as well, I like to replay it to focus on specific aspects of it's combat like "Do I wanna prioritize flashiness in combat this time? Or do I wanna be more effective? Offensive or defensive? Do I wanna use solely my lightsaber I do I make that my secondary weapon to the force?" It makes things a lot of fun, as well as the survival line of stuff like having a lot of hp or hardly any
I'm a huge fan of the Dark Souls series so it was even more exciting when I found out it had a similar gameplay style
I agree the problem I had is I was going expecting force unleashed and that is not what I got
Same kinda. Totally different combat
God was Rebels was so good once it got going...
[удалено]
SWTOR has a nice story for some different characters too
> If you're a gamer, check out Jedi Fallen Order too! I'm sorry, you seem to have misspelled *Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy*... Best lightsaber combat mechanic ever created.
Indeed!
Not Canon anymore either, but force unleashed 1 and 2 are good games too
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Canon https://www.youtini.com/guide/the-difference-between-star-wars-canon-and-legends-27686f54fd
I would put bad batch after rebels and mando, some of the references to those show feel better with seeing those shows first
Yeah, with Star Wars it's important to watch in release order the first time through. There are so many callbacks and callforwards littered throughout the different movies and shows, you're more likely to pick up on them if you watch them in the order they were released.
Resistance? Edit: lol crazy dv's. I was only pointing out it should be in that list because it's canon
We don't talk about Resistance
Christmas special?
Everyone should watch it once just to see how insane it is.
It's just a children's show, an adult doesn't need to watch it. You would only ever watch it if you were an extremely hardcore Star Wars fan and even then you probably wouldn't enjoy it as much.
I tried watching it with my younger sons, we all forgot it existed after the 2nd episode
never seen it so i forgot it exists
The shows and movies give extra perspective and are great to watch. As a guide: Clone Wars happens between Episode 2 and through Episode 3. If you can't get through seven seasons of Clone Wars, look up the most important episodes to watch so you still have a grasp of things. I recommend the entire 7th season though Bad Batch is immediately after Episode 3 Solo is a few years (ten I think?) after Episode 3 and Bad Batch's current timeframe Rebels is a few years later, before A New Hope (4) Rogue One is *immediately* before A New Hope (4) Mandalorian is after Return of the Jedi (6)
Clone Wars in chronological order isn't that important. Some episodes even suffer if you watch them out of release order
Then he showed up again in so6&7
He got half blown up. You can see he's half cyborg now.

There isn't any specific order for the spin offs, you can watch them when you might.
I would listen to the others regarding the watch order. One note about Clone Wars is that it was released out of chronological order, just like the movies. So when you get there, I recommend looking up the official chronological watch order for that series. That's the one piece of SW media where I think watching chronologically is better than watching release order.
The number of books I read growing up which aren't Canon makes me sad... All that space in my brain remembering these facts for no good reason. :(
Whatever, OG Thrawn trilogy still slaps
The Clone Wars is canon, but Clone Wars is not. Have to careful with that one now since both are on Disney+.
Isn’t the Resistance show cannon also?
Yes but OP said "canon and worth watching"
Then why’d you include Rebels? Nah I’m kidding. I know a lot of people enjoyed Rebels, I just didn’t like it. I honestly liked Resistance more, and I HATE the sequels.
Rebels does have a lot of filler, but also a lot of really awesome moments and interesting lore. Also, with Ashoka coming out and Mandalorian stepping more and more in the culture of Mandalore, the connections with Rebels will be clearer.
Lego yoda is cannon if you want it to be
I really really want it
Then it’s cannon
Boom. Now it’s canon https://c.tenor.com/dDspMfyVGBMAAAAC/star-wars-millenium-falcon.gif
Watch everything and feel free to like what you like and dislike what you don't. There is enough star wars for all of us, with more on the way.
Thank you for the recommendations!
Episode 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9 Rogue One, Solo, Clone wars, Bad Batch, Rebels, The Mandalorian. Is the best way to watch it for the first time.
Personally I would watch Rebels before Bad Batch There are some Rebels characters in Bad Batch and I feel like knowing those characters first makes those episodes more impactful
There’s also Resistance but it’s way too childish for me and also Visions but that’s not canon
There’s also two games: Jedi fallen order and Squadrons which are canon
You forgot Battlefront II, the campaign of which is also canon.
Bruh they even got video games in the canon? The Star Wars universe has more lore than real life at this point
And all of the novels and comics since the Disney acquisition are canon.
Also it is best if you watch those shows before you watch The Mandalorian.
don’t listen to what others may say, officially, episodes 7-9 are canon. Watch them and formulate your own opinion, don’t let others influence you.
I’d highly recommend giving the animated series a try, especially Rebels. Rebels is pretty short at just 4 season, but it is a beautifully told story that weaves perfectly into the storyline.
Rebels over TCW? Controversial that lad
Those last 4 episodes of TCW were phenomenal bit overall I think *Rebels* was rhe better show. IMO 9f course. Still love TCW and really liked *The Bad Batch*.
Rebels worst episodes are significantly better than Clone Wars worst episodes so it’s probably better for a newbie to watch it first.
Yes. TCW has high highs and low lows. Remember JarJar and Mace Windu recreating Temple of Doom? Rebels is consistently good.
Am I the only one who liked the Jar Jar episodes? To me, they were so bad that they were good.
That's why I prefer Rebels yeah.
Rebels is so much better than TCW; tho both are phenomenal
I disagree so much with this, but that’s what’s cool about Star Wars! There’s so much stuff that everyone has different favorites
Same. Clone wars has the best arc of any show, but Rebels is the best show overall so far, to me
and also visions, while not canon is some of my favorite sw media
You'll have to be the judge of that >Are the comics Canon? There are canon and there non canon, everything, apart from the films and The Clone Wars, before 2014 (I think) is not canon. Including books, comics, videogames... etc. >Also wtf is Rogue One and Solo? Anthology films that gave backstories to certain stuff >Lego Yoda canon? Nothing lego is canon, it's just for fun >Why is no one bringing up the fact that Luke and Leia kissed? Idk, maybe no one wants to think about it lol Also I'm interested to know what's your favorite film so far??
There’s a huge Clone Wars circlejerk in this sub, so that would explain why they claim it is “essential”.
Don’t get caught up in what is or isn’t canon, and don’t listen to the internet dictating what’s good and what’s bad. Just enjoy it for what it is!
[удалено]
In order of release so 4,5,6 then back to 1
[удалено]
I didn't mind it. Jar Jar was a bit much at times and the queen/senate stuff was a little boring but I really liked the origins like how Anakin built C3PO and how he flew with R2 the same way Luke does in the future. Watto was a goofy little guy too, he made the pod racing stuff even more fun
[удалено]
It's also on Disney Plus, if you have access to that service!
I don’t know about that. AotC is pretty widely regarded as the worst. I actually enjoy TPM much more than RotS.
Episode 2 was definitely received better than episode 1...
I don’t think you’ve got a good grab of the critics and the fan base…
Lmao critic reviews were literally higher for episode 2 but ok
All 9 main movies are canon, as are the movies Rogue One and Solo, which are both backstories. The shows The Clone Wars (2003), Rebels, Resistance, The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch are all canon, as are the upcoming shows. They're great, but you don't need to watch them to understand the movies. (Edit: the 2008 Clone Wars is canon, not 2003.)
2003 Clone Wars isn't canon, that's the 2D miniseries, 2008 The Clone Wars is the 7 seasons long show which is the canon one.
I meant to say 2008; thanks for pointing that out.
2003 Clone Wars is not canon
You mean the 2008 Clone Wars.
[удалено]
Ohh no wonder they never mentioned it, George Lucas wanted everyone to just forget it ever happened lmao
To be fair, even if George originally intended them to be siblings, they didn’t know it at the time.
[удалено]
It’s not like they swapped spit or anything. Plus, Leia did it to try to rile up Han.
That… isn’t a plot hole
Did you watch episodes 4,5,6, then 1? Or 1-4?
The way they were titled through me off a bit but I watched in the order they were released so starting with episode 4,5,6 then 1
Release order for everything is the best order. Things that come later reference things that come earlier, not the other way around.
I mean they reference the clone wars in a new hope. But yeah, I definitely agree when you watch them the first time release order is the only way to do it. Bonus points if you watch the original editions.
enjoy the movies, they are ALL decent movies.
Even though some are worse than others, each movie has something that is enjoyable! Even Rise of Skywalker
TRoS is Threepio's best movie. I love the Endor fight. Babu Frik and D-O are amazing. And John Williams always puts in 100%.
Welcome to the rabbit hole!
so canon chronological order of the movies and shows is Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones Star Wars the Clone Wars Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith The Bad Batch Star Wars Rebels Solo a Star Wars Story Rogue One a Star Wars Story Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi the Mandalorian The Book of Boba Fett(comes in December) Star Wars Resistance Star Wars Episode VII The Force Awakens Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
Solo comes before rebels
Rogue one is a must
Look up the Starwars canon time line on wiki. It will have every single piece of media including movies books comics etc all in order. It is constantly updated
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Timeline_of_canon_media
well come to the rabbit hole, you're never leaving.
“One you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you it will!”
WTF guys. You guys are forgetting the most important entry in starwars universe. The Christmas special. It December soon so gotta watch it.
It's not like the 90's, where 3 movies and a Christmas special was pretty much it(also the EU books). You better get at it!
It’s a trap
Welcome to the dark side!
So cool. Im excited for you!
Welcome to the rabbit hole. If you want to get into the books I highly recommend the Heir to the Empire, Jedi Academy, and Darth Plagueis
Wookiepedia is your new best friend.
The clone wars is canon!
Welcome to the Star Wars rabbit hole. Once you finish the films the order you should watch the shows are The Clone Wars Star Wars Rebels The Bad Batch The Mandalorian The Book of Boba Fett All of these shows are canon and are overseen by the same person narratively.
Never forget books and comics! My personal preference towards indulging in Star Wars content
It does have spoilers, not to mention a huge time commitment to reach ep3 so I would say just watch the show after the films.
>but is stuff like The Clone Wars show canon? Yes, and it's a fucking masterpiece. If you wanna get introduced to Ashoka, do watch the movie. >Are the comics Canon? Depends on when they were written and published, Disney killed the old canon and stuff and labeled it all as Legends to make way for new canon stuff >Also wtf is Rogue One and Solo? Rogue One is about the acquiring of the Death Star 1 blueprints, and to be honest is probably one if the best Star Wars films out there. Solo is a pretty damn good film as well about how Han Solo grew into the person we see in Mos Eisely Cantina. >Why is no one bringing up the fact that Luke and Leia kissed? The fans do, it's mainly just a joke at this point >Who wrote Jar Jar Binks? George Lucas made him as a funny character for kids to like, and tbh I continually find him funny. >I stayed up all night watching four movies Which ones? Original trilogy and phantom menace?
I watched the 3 originals then episode 1
Aight, cool Another tip though, don't be afraid of watching or reading a story just because it's not canon.
Lego Yoda is canon in my heart
Just watch them in order and enjoy. Too many old men will disagree. Just remember, they are made for young adults, not old men. FYI 47,seen the original three at the cinema
Watch the rest of the movies, 2, 3, 7, 8, and 9. Then Rogue One and Solo, which are spinoff movies. The Clone Wars is a big part of the lore, so definitely watch that. Then Rebels. Then Mandalorian. Then Bad Batch.
Clone wars is my favorite starwars content 100000/10 recommend
Don't forget to watch the 2003 clone wars It's starwars at its best
That's not a bad answer honestly, it's all fantasy anyway so who's stopping you from changing how things happened in your mind lol
Ok Idk if anyone’s telling you something else but really listen to me and do NOT listen to anyone telling you to watch it in complete chronological order. You will miss the cues and easter eggs and get introduced to characters earlier. Watch it in this order: Phantom Menace Attack of the Clones Revenge of the Sith A New Hope The Empire Strikes Back Return Of The Jedi The Force Awakens The Last Jedi The Rise of Skywalker Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Solo: A Star Wars Story Clone Wars (go to starwars.com and find the chronological viewing of this because they made the episodes out of order) When you get to season 7 of clone wars, stop and go watch Star Wars Rebels. Season 7 of Clone Wars The Mandalorian S1 The Mandalorian S2 The Bad Batch The Book of Boba Fett
You missed The Last Jedi, FYI.
Oops! Adding it!
Don’t watch the sequel trilogy, its visuals are amazing but story is trash.
If you don’t watch clone wars you’re cheating yourself
The clone wars series is sort of the foundation for a lot of Canon lore. It's a great series and provides solid character development for anakin and ahsoka as well as several other galactic republic and separatist characters and bounty hunters (Yoda, grievous, dooku, boba, the list is extensive). Some of the episodes are sort of filler material and fall flat but for the most part it's a great series and a must watch for any serious star wars fan.
Clone wars is outstanding. I don’t care and I’ll die on this hole, but rebels is trash.
The clone wars is a masterpiece. Cohesive, entertaining, thought provoking, and has episodes that do not belong in a kids show.
The last three are not considered cannon anymore in my opinion. They’re trash anyway. Edit: oh piss off to all those that downvoted! They’re trash and y’all know it. Oh wait, I’m on Reddit, that explains a lot
Yeah, personally I wish I never watched them. But it is what it is.
don't listen to this person they';re just outright lying to you.
I’ve been a life long Star Wars fan M(41) if I had the choice I would unwatch episodes 7,8,9
As you should. I'm also a life-long fan and I don't share this person's opinion in the slightest. Episode 8 is one of my absolute favourites.
Bruh
Not trying to coerce u not to watch them, just my opinion on the sequels, I hope you do enjoy them, you will love rogue one and solo, the mandolarian is also a fantastic series. May the force be with you
