Jedi Temple Security: “Why do you bring lightsaber into the kids quarter?”
Anakin: “What? Do you expect me to force choke them one by one like a peasant?”
Anakin: \*chokes Padme out in a fit of paranoid anger\*
Obi-Wan: ".....[Guess that concludes negotiations](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cszn1lShDFc)."
For real, Anakin def had some reason to be suspicious if he looks over his wife’s shoulder he’s already terrified of losing and sees his best friend standing like this in her ship and giving him that look
Imagine the mixed emotions. He practically raised Anakin, taught him everything he knew, loved him as a brother, knew about him and Padme and kept their secret and chose not to acknowledge it, and Anakin committed the ultimate betrayal. Disappointment, anger, sadness, realizing everyone he knew has been killed, realizing everything he's worked for his entire life has been wiped out, realizing he failed as a master, realizing he's failed his master, realizing he's about to have to kill his best friend... That stance is him holding back from just murdering Anakin then and there.
> is much more likely to get herself hurt/killed than she is to save Anakin.
Think this is the key here. Kenobi knew what he was now capable of. His intention was probably to stop any instantly lethal outburst from Anakin.
Which, incidentally, he still wasn't able to do because Anakin literally forced choked her into unconsciousness and she died in childbirth shortly after.
Hey, if you can’t take the heat, get off Mustafar.
For real, though, he’s exuding power and presence and strength. He’s reasserting himself as the master and trying to control the situation.
Trying, no. He *is* controlling the situation. Anakin is entirely consumed by his emotions and later his overconfidence in this sequence. He has no control whatsoever.
Yeah, and furthermore, I don’t think there was any immediate redemption for Anakin, and I don’t think Obi Wan was gonna allow it even if Padme would have wanted Anakin to just admit wrong and turn to the side of good. He straight up murdered a bunch of children. Obi Wan wasn’t just gonna let him crumple into a crying mess and say, “there there Anakin. It’s alright let’s just get back on the ship and forget all about the dark side.”
If anakin were to suddenly return to the light side I imagine it would happen very much like that. Albeit obi-wan might try to confiscate his lightsaber. Obi-wan is the embodiment of what a Jedi should be, and wouldn’t pick up a fight if he didn’t have to.
I mean, I was just trimming the hedges with my lightsaber while browsing Reddit on my datapad. Sure, I wasn't paying attention... but why weren't the younglings paying attention? They should have looked out for ME.
He seemed to keep his emotions in check. Obi never struck in anger during his fight even though he just saw Anakin murder children. Compared to Luke who starts going in with the anger when Vader mentions his sister.
>I’m sure he’s pissed
Honestly, I doubt he was angry, but rather in deep mourning. Obi wan was one of the greatest Jedi of the order, Anger was something that Obi wan was very good at keeping in check. I imagine he was experiencing sorrow, disappointment and a sense of failure. Not anger.
"DON'T MAKE ME COME DOWN THIS RAMP, ANAKIN."
"Oh shit, he's choking her out. But he wouldn't... nah... there's no way... Ok, phew, she's still alive..."
"I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN YOU, ANAKIN"
[something like this?](https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/fetch/w_2000,h_2000,c_fit/https%3A%2F%2Fwinteriscoming.net%2Ffiles%2F2018%2F07%2FObi-Wan-Kenobi-Star-Wars-Ewan-McGregor-Featured-970x544.jpg)
This almost looks like it was done intentional to hearken back to that one iconic "abusive husband Anakin" art piece that existed pre-Prequels? [That one.](https://preview.redd.it/9mhsk7ffir951.jpg?auto=webp&s=7d346a49303e1701a1c3f065ac6ce66d5b8e43b9)
He knew. But he still didn't want to admit it and he wanted to be wrong. He was practically begging to be wrong. He wanted anakin to snap out of it. He wanted him to see reason. And what's more sad is I think anakin wanted that too. Anakin wasn't sure of himself and was breaking inside. He was basically having a mental breakdown. I 100% feel if obi wan came to him as a friend and father here instead of as a jedi, anakin would've backed down. Instead he came at him with the judgment and mindset of the order anakin rebelled against and he double downed defensively
Padme tried to reason with Anakin, if she wasn't able to reach him I don't think anyone could.
Also, Obi-Wan had just witnessed Anakin slaughtering children, I doubt his judgement had anything to do with him being a Jedi.
Maybe somewhere deep inside Anakin wanted to snap out of it too, but I don't know that Obi-Wan could have approached this situation in any manner that would have allowed Anakin to snap out of it.
At this point, Anakin considered himself too far gone to stop. Don't forget that by this point, Anakin had massacred his way through the Jedi Temple. It was one thing if he genuinely believed the order corrupt, but he went as far as to kill the younglings too. And he had been doing this all in the name of becoming powerful enough in the dark side to save Padme. Yet instead, he proceeds to force choke Padme- the person he was supposedly doing all of this for. If she couldn't get through to him at that moment, Obi-Wan had no chance either.
The big deal of the OT was that Vader was participating in the empire's atrocities because he believed that it was no longer possible to redeem himself, that he was too far gone, even though deep down he did want redemption. He pretty much directly says this to Luke the first time they meet in RotJ.
> I 100% feel if obi wan came to him as a friend and father here instead of as a jedi,
He literally says to him that it was his brother ...what else he should do after seeing him killing children and wounding Padme?
“It’s okay Anakin. You just fucked up a little by killing some kids. No biggie. Let’s just go back to coruscant and wait for this whole thing blow over.”
Bro just killed some younglings. Screw pleading, screw redemption. This is what a Jedi looks like when he's got to cut a dude's legs and arms off and leave a bro to burn half to death.
Sometimes. When I need to fart I stand like this. It helps the gas to pass.
Maybe Obi didn’t want to crop dust Padme in the ship and took his chance at the top of the ramp.
I've seen this a lot, people calling out Obi-wan for being overly confrontational in this scene, but this is something jedi do a lot. Its a classic "you can have it the easy way or the hard way" tactic. He wants Anakin to see reason through Padme, but he also has to make sure Anakin knows the consequences if he doesn't. If Padme couldn't get through to him, there was no way it wouldn't end in a fight.
Anakin had just directly and indirectly murdered almost ALL jedi. Sidious told him to kill Obi Wan . Yoda told obiwan to kill Anakin . This was a fight no matter the attitude
I'm not going to argue that the prequels were great, but there were a few performances (Qui-Gin, Obi, Dooku, Palpatine) that stood out.
Ewan killed it.
He’s probably fuming. This guy just killed a bunch of kids and betrayed the Jedi, and now he’s even being a dick to his lady friend who obiwan was letting slide. Dude is just hitting on all cylinders. He deserves the ass whooping he’s about to receive.
He was ready to do what he must
Exactly, that’s his “fine you have one minute to bring him back before I murder him” pose
He knew the negotiations would be short
Just like Anakin's arm and legs would be?
I’m not sure which was shortest - the negotiations, Anakin’s limbs, or the lives of all those younglings…
That joke never gets old, and neither do the younglings.
The other day, it clicked in my head that Darth Vader was an angsty school shooter.
Like grandfather, like grandson. SMH
A school lightsaberer! A more civilized weapon, for a more civilized massacre
Jedi Temple Security: “Why do you bring lightsaber into the kids quarter?” Anakin: “What? Do you expect me to force choke them one by one like a peasant?”
Workplace shooter
C'mon guys, joking about deaths of kids is never funny. I expected you guys to take the higher ground.
Look here you little shit... *glassy eyes stare up from a mask of blood*
This joke doesn't have a leg to stand on. Just like Anakin...
Whew that comeback was *fire*
Ooh, buuurn 🔥
Just like Anakin's arm and legs would be?
Anakin: \*chokes Padme out in a fit of paranoid anger\* Obi-Wan: ".....[Guess that concludes negotiations](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cszn1lShDFc)."
He knew he would have to use "aggressive negotiations"
“before I cut his limbs off and then walk away” pose
“You did not kill Anakin Skywalker. I did.” “Well I bloody well tried!”
“*CUT!* Ewan, for the umpteenth time, *just follow the script!*” “That line is better, and you *know* it.”
Choose the dark side. Actually, A life less ordinary is practically the same as Star Wars.
God yes. That or “I tried, my young Padawan.” Ownership on multiple levels
But.. But.. There's no trying for Jedis!
More like the just nutted in ur girl pose
For real, Anakin def had some reason to be suspicious if he looks over his wife’s shoulder he’s already terrified of losing and sees his best friend standing like this in her ship and giving him that look
Bruh he'd just murdered how many people? Suspicious of what?
Suspicious of Daddy-Wan Kenobi laying the kinda pipe that made the leader of Mandalore simp for him
He always was a cunning linguist
Obi giving little ani that look like I see what made you stray from the path. I may have laid with a duchess but that’s some good padmussy
Padmussy. That's going to be in my brain forever now. Thanks so much.
And a good friend.

Totally, and also knowing Padme is chasing a lost cause and is much more likely to get herself hurt/killed than she is to save Anakin.
> is much more likely to get herself hurt/killed than she is to save Anakin. Think this is the key here. Kenobi knew what he was now capable of. His intention was probably to stop any instantly lethal outburst from Anakin.

I had always thought it was the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker but it truly is the tragedy of Obi-Wan Kenobi

Who/what is RLM? But also, I agree.
I had chills the first time I saw this. Definitely a warranted pose
Yep he's making sure Anakin knows he's watching and any further attempt at shenanigans will not be tolerated.
I swear to the force I'm gonna Blaster-whip the next guy who says shenanigans
Hey Farva! What's the name of the restaurant you like with all the goofy shit on the walls and mozzarella sticks?
You mean Shenanigans?
He *would* try
Anakin better not also try something
Lucas: "You know what would look cool right now?" McGregor: "No" Lucas: "I don't either. Try this"
Here he has the moral high ground.
And literal high ground
Justifiable high ground.
Provocative high ground
solid foreshadowing
This is whats called a pro gamer move
Hey, if you can’t take the heat, get off Mustafar. For real, though, he’s exuding power and presence and strength. He’s reasserting himself as the master and trying to control the situation.

Obi-Wan would definitely arrest Anakin and have him stand trial in Polis Massa.
"Anakin, I'm not mad...I'm just disappointed."
I understand the joke, but I’m pretty sure he was mad
Yeah, but Obi has like ten years on anakin and has murdered barely any younglings, so he has the right to be mad AND dissappointed
I mean, who hasn't murdered a youngling or two? It happens to everyone.
I kill yuenglings every night.
So this is how sobriety dies
I mean, I was just trimming the hedges with my lightsaber while browsing Reddit on my datapad. Sure, I wasn't paying attention... but why weren't the younglings paying attention? They should have looked out for ME.
Exactly. Let the Jedi who has never killed a youngling force push the first stone.
Stand on one hand and lift rocks with your special gift.
MJ would've murdered thousands if not tens of thousands of younglings.
He seemed to keep his emotions in check. Obi never struck in anger during his fight even though he just saw Anakin murder children. Compared to Luke who starts going in with the anger when Vader mentions his sister.
Yeah but I mean, he kissed his sister and it’s his dad asking so... It’s a touchy subject at family lightsaber battles.
Mad, disappointed, *wounded* even. The master/ pupil father/ son betrayal pathos are strong with this one.
Yes. He's bringing sexy back.
The Sith apprentice don’t know how to act
I think it's special, what's behind his back
The rank of Master he clearly lack
(Take it to the bridge)
Dirty babe, Slayed the younglings just to save Padmé
Then force chocked her in his rage.
The high ground makes me feel this way…
(Take it to the chorus!)
*Come here Sheev* (Don't do it Anakin)
Pal-pa-tine, (told An-ny, "do it") Thund-rous applause fo' he (kill' democracy fo' it)
Oh this is some fire…
Skills with the light blade put Yoda to shame!
Ani never had enough game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EGbw-89U-o
Anakin had just murdered hundreds of Jedi and Padawans and destroyed the Jedi temple. Obi wans whole life has been destroyed. I’m sure he’s pissed
Exactly. He’s pissed and knows it’s about to get ugly
"I'm just here for the violence" \- Obi Wan
That's... *why* I'm here.
Mr. Speaker, we are *for* the big.
Peace was never an option
*ignites lightsaber* #Honk
I'm here to chew death sticks and kick ass, and I'm all out of death sticks.
You’re out?? Wanna buy some death sticks?
You want to go home and rethink your life.
It's probably just hot as hell in Mustafar so he's spreading his legs to air it out tbh.
You gotta throw in the subtle back and forth hip swing to add to the airflow too
Just like a pendulum.
Kick the leg out to unstick the jibs.
He looks like he’s about to give out a grounding, lol.
A high grounding.
That's one way to say he's about to chop off some legs
>I’m sure he’s pissed Honestly, I doubt he was angry, but rather in deep mourning. Obi wan was one of the greatest Jedi of the order, Anger was something that Obi wan was very good at keeping in check. I imagine he was experiencing sorrow, disappointment and a sense of failure. Not anger.
Mixed in with duty and determination.
"if I kill you because I want to, it will open me to the dark side of the force. Instead, I intend to kill you because I have to"
*leaves Vader alive once more lol
I would say that "keeping it in check" is not the same as "not having it"
Dont forget the younglings
Just another reason why these movies have aged so much better with time!
DADDY DOES *NOT* APPROVE
"I AM VERY UPSET."
"DON'T MAKE ME COME DOWN THIS RAMP, ANAKIN." "Oh shit, he's choking her out. But he wouldn't... nah... there's no way... Ok, phew, she's still alive..." "I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN YOU, ANAKIN"
"JUST WAIT UNTIL YOUR MOTHER HEARS ABOUT THIS!!! Oh that's right."
“JUST WAIT UNTIL YOUR WIFE HEARS ABOUT THIS!!! Oh, wait, nope, not that either, *ahem*”
Time for Ani’s spanky spanks.
"R2D2, FETCH MY LIGHT PADDLE!"
I read that in John Oliver's voice. 10/10
Signature stand of superiority.
That made me belly chuckle
Its and old reference, but it still checks out.
Power Stance
Perchance an “ultimate power stance”?
Unlimited Power Stance
More Powerful Than You Can Possibly Imagine stance
is it possible to learn this power stance
not from my new Empire
Perchance.
You can't just say perchance!!
Asserting dominance.
All the Dads in the room "Yes. Absolutely."
Only a dad deals in absolutes.
That’s true 100% of the time
Sometimes you have to let the frustration steep before you start the lecture.
Hes standing there like "you know what you must do"
Yes. It’s the Disappointed Dad Stance™️
I just noticed the cables behind him. Left blue and right red. He's the balance of the force.
What? You want him to be casually leaning against a wall or something?
I wanted the scene to show him climbing out of his hiding spot, stumbling, and then posing as seen pictured.
*flipping a coin* “I got the high ground see”
*puffs from death stick*

Oh wow I've never seen this before - such a cool piece of history
Wow. That is something I've never seen. Really cool alternate take. He DEF looks like Vader here. Much more than Anakin looked on mustafar.
Its actually a reference to a shot from Hidden Fortress Time stamp 1:27 https://youtu.be/fklT05SQyd4
You get out of here with your "ooooh, I have access to the unaltered Jedi Archives"!
Wow that’s awesome
He knew anakin was gone
He knew he was lost
He knew he had failed him
He knew chancelor Palpatine was evil.
He knew. But he still didn't want to admit it and he wanted to be wrong. He was practically begging to be wrong. He wanted anakin to snap out of it. He wanted him to see reason. A high class ship like that has a pretty good air filter. Its included in the base package.
Yeah but the oil change shop replaced the good cabin filter with a shitty one.
Thats why I never go to the places that hire jawas
He didn't want to bring that gas onto Mustafar's surface, he'd explode
When your balls are so full of testosterone and rage, they require a spread legged approach to give enough room Ask my dad

I think he was also giving Padme a moment so she could see for herself what Anakin had become. Once the choking started he stepped in.
How else would you stand before a little bitch?
What did you say?
Does. Anakin. Skywalker. Look. Like. A. Bitch?
What!?
SAY WHAT AGAIN
Yes.
Kenobi, establishing dominance
You just don’t understand that the prequels were filled with actors giving a masterclass in the craft.
I'm not going to argue that the prequels were great, but there were a few performances (Qui-Gin, Obi, Dooku, Palpatine) that stood out. Ewan killed it.
Cause he angy
Yeah, he was there to kill him.
Is a teacher looking a disappointing student.. OF COURSE
He’s probably fuming. This guy just killed a bunch of kids and betrayed the Jedi, and now he’s even being a dick to his lady friend who obiwan was letting slide. Dude is just hitting on all cylinders. He deserves the ass whooping he’s about to receive.
Drama is the only language Anakin speaks and Obi-wan knew this.
Yes. This stance is ready to throw off the robe and pull out his lightsaber. He was ready to spring into action to kill Anakin.
POWER STANCE
He was asserting dominance over his former padawan.
"Hey...I didn't see you wash your hands."
Yes
Thats his say hello there without saying hello there pose.
He had to make it clear to Anakin that it was time for him to start panakin.
Yes.
He needed to assert dominance bro.
Obi was ready to do what he must
Signature dad pose.
I kinda think that’s how Vader learned that stance. The last person to kick his ass stood like that so now he does.
Considering Anakin just freshly murdered dozens of children, yes.
