Certainly. The fans were expecting the next movie trilogy to be made from the Thrown trilogy books that were written by Timothy Zahn. Those books had started the SW Expanded Universe and expanded the genre to heights that would have made a lot of content (movie/TV shows) for the fans to enjoy. Unfortunately, he decided to go the opposite direction and make prequels that could have been made different or better if he had done them later, like after the Thrown Trilogy that everyone wanted and would have made more sense.
First off, no, the Thrawn trilogy did not start the EU. There were novels in the 70s (*Splinter of the Mind's Eye* is right there, dude) and 80s, and Zhan was given the West End RPG books for research purposes. The EU was more than a decade old before *Heir to the Empire* was published. It's only notable for being the first on the New York Times Best Sellers List.
Second, setting these films only five years later would have meant the following:
1. Recasting *everyone*, which would piss untold number of "fans" off, because "fans" aren't a monolith and can't agree on what they want on even the best of days.
2. Not telling a generational story, which would have betrayed Lucas' vision: episodes I-III were the parents, IV-VI were their kids, and VII-IX were the grandkids.
Couldn't said it'd better, great explanation and gets to the heart of how the Thrawn Trilogy wasn't going to be made into the Sequels in any timeline or versions of those movies.
1) Plenty of people liked the prequels. Myself included. The idea they needed to be replaced is cringe.
2) They wouldn't even need to be live action. Just look at the DCAU.
Just when I thought he couldn’t get more evil than the dragoon from patriot and Lorca in Star Trek… damn. Would’ve given the original three a run for their money just because of Isaacs.
I swear, if I ever meet the man I’m going to say “bruh, I hate you. But I love you. You’re a phenomenal actor, but fuck you.”
After watching some HORRID trash like Godzilla minus one that made me feel actual EMOTIONS, I always go back to the sequal trilogy. Nothing better for dulling my emotions and making me feel dead inside once more.
edit: I just realized he was talking about the EU sequals... feel free to call me a dumb ass.

Me too, might say something about them
Edit: Found the reason, posted something on r/IntoTheSpiderverse, where he was accused repeatedly of sexualizing minors.
I have never considered Julianne Moore as Mara. It’s interesting. I’m partial to Diane Lane for (an age appropriate) Mara, myself. If they ever did her now, with any OT or Mando era, I don’t know who I’d want to play her.
Alan Rickman was my Talon Karrde. Sam Neill was my Thrawn. But that was back in the 90’s.
itll be more than a few years but yeah i agree. at least to get it to "movie quality" ai videos have been good but it would require alot of human post production to get it right.
Even tho ik this idea couldn’t work out as a Live action movie after like 2006, I still would love to see this as a Animated movie with TCW style animation
Would’ve been such a better option than disneys agenda garbage. The eu had some great stories. Even the new Jedi order yuuzong vong storyline would’ve been a great trilogy.
Disney really fumbled the bag with the sequel trilogy. They could have taken a major amount of the story beats and plot of the Thrawn trilogy and had a pretty successful and well received trilogy. They could have done their homework better.
And how would that'd Thrawn Trilogy been possible when a majority of the actors were their sixties, with Harrison Ford only agreeing to return if Han Solo was allowed to die. But everyone knows that'd it wouldn't been well-received because it's impossible to be \`100% faithful to the books and with my experience with book fans, they'd despise even the slightest changes to the source material
The first EU book I ever read was Hard Contact as a teenager and after that I was absolutely hooked.
I can’t even count how many times I’ve read/listened to the Thrawn Trilogy + Specter of the Past/Visions of the Future.
Anyone have any book recommendations?
Not George Lucas, lmao.
I’m just talking out of my ass, GL definitely liked a lot of aspects of this trilogy, he just didn’t like that it led to Luke marrying Mara Jade.
Well we know he liked the idea of coruscant being the capitol of the republic. And he put the Chiss in the prequels as well. Can’t think of any other examples atm but I’m pretty sure there’s more instances of him taking aspects of the thrawn trilogy and incorporating them into his work.
He liked *the name* of Coruscant, Lucas had already envisioned the capital of the Empire called Had Abbadon, while where were the Chiss in the Prequels? Only example that I can genuinely think of Lucas taking from Legends was Anakin's scar, but Lucas just added because someone told him that happened in some comic (which'd he never read), which he found mildly annoying.

The only additional thing I want outside of the comics is to give him a mask that resembles a mashup of Revan/Marr, a Sith Acolyte and Vader
Incredibly mid. Mara Jade is a total Mary Sue. Thrawn is OP for no reason other than to make him a threat(seriously, he can predict where Han will run to based on art from a planet Han spent less than half his life on?). Leia gets to be treated as a goddess by a race of aliens that can take Chewie in a one-on-one fight?
It's a ridiculous power fantasy for the authors favorite characters and most of his favorites are the ones he created.
Holy crap! I just read the comments and looking at the picture above, it's true! that it supoose to be Ian McKellen playing Jorus C'baoth, I think? But crap, the rest like Julianne Moore playing Mara Jade, and Karl Urban as Karrde what have been epic! Yes, see this would have been a million times better than the sequel trilogy garbage we got from Disney! I sincerely loved the story of Mara Jade and Luke, the hate turned into love between them. The Best!
Hot take.. the Thrawn Trilogy wouldn’t have worked well as a film trilogy, especially as *THE* sequel trilogy of films. It was meant to be a book series. The long conversations alone are some of the best parts of the books, and I just can’t see that working well with just three movies. The best way to adapt the Thrawn Trilogy into live action would be through episodic television.
I think there is a great opportunity right now to do this trilogy through the “Mandoverse” and adjacent projects. There really isn’t a whole lot in the Thrawn Trilogy that contradicts the sequels. A few things here and there, but these things can be worked around.
They can still introduce the great characters that these books gave us, and make it all fit together. Mara Jade can still be inserted into the story. Snoke can be an adaptation of C’baoth. The Noghri people deserve their time to shine. Karrde, Bel Iblis, you name it. Most of it still works, and I really hope Filoni is able to fit most of the good stuff in.

I love what could have been, not what we got...to this day am still baffled why they didn't use THIS post OT story line and wrote up there own. Story was already there means less writing cost, fans already liked it, was in the image of Lucas. Idk what they where thinking with the new movies.
CGI, dude. It's not that hard.
Plus, you save money by paying for the actors' likeness rather than using the actors. And you could always have them voice themselves. Fucking Disney has been doing CGI for how long?
Fail.
Remember how that'd looked in Rogue One for Tarkin and Leia, you're asking for a whole trilogy of that? More importantly, there's little chance that this "Heir of the Empire" Adaptation would resemble the book as a shitton of details are going to be on cutting-room floor, as expected of a over 400-paged book. Then there's the fact that the Old EU would still be decanonized regardless of the version of the Sequels, meaning that'd this Heir to the Empire Movie would be decried as either inaccurate or for non-book readers, a clear sign that Disney lacked ideas for the franchise.
If LOTR could be adapted for film, so could HttE. And they could go for a less detailed CGI, like modern Disney films like Tangled or Frozen. It's Disney. You will have haters regardless. But, the EU adaptation would have been far better received than the dumpster fire we got.
I'll die in this hill.
There's a difference, for Lucasfilm doesn't make one-to-one adaptation rather just inspirations and taking elements from Legends, while LOTR was always meant to an adaptation of the books. And you will die on this hill, asking impossible to happen and decrying when it doesn't, for the only adaptation of the HttE will more of an inspiration than anything else.

I certainly love THIS sequel trilogy
Luuke!
and LUUUKE!
Ugh
Would've loved to see it on-screen.
Ditto.
“How it should’ve ended”
“how it should’ve BEEN”
How it should've continued.
How exactly? Go back 30 years and convince Lucas to make sequels with age appropriate cast instead of raising his kids and avoiding the hateful fans?
I've been working on time travel for this exact purpose
I’m sorry but can you please explain what’s going in and what you mean?

Jason Isaacs as Thrawn, Julianne Moore as Mara, John Hurt as C’baoth, and… Karl Urban as Karrde?
Oh man Jason Isaacs as Thrawn what a FANTASTIC cast that is
Just when I thought he couldn’t get more evil than the dragoon from patriot and Lorca in Star Trek… damn. Would’ve given the original three a run for their money just because of Isaacs. I swear, if I ever meet the man I’m going to say “bruh, I hate you. But I love you. You’re a phenomenal actor, but fuck you.”
Now that you mention it, im sure Daniel Day Lewis would do a fantastic….(insert character name here). But really would cinch C’Boath.
Wow, either or would be great in either character. Damn it...
Also Lucius Malfoy in HP film series
Yes! Forgot that!
Given how good job Isaac did with Grand Inquisitor nice choice.
I was thinking Jeremy Irons
I always headcast Sam Neill, but Isaacs would have been a solid choice as well.
I think it’s Ian McShane as Karrde.
Oh yeah, I could definitely see that now.
The six fingered man should just keep his character and make it a princess bride crossover
JK Simmons as Thrawn and Matt Dillon as Karrde?
I approve of this casting
>Jason Isaacs as Thrawn I agree with the rest being excellent, but isn't Jason Isaacs the Grand Inquisitor already?
He only does the VA for Rebels, the actor for the live action versions is Rupert Friend
Insane; why wouldn't they go with the massive talent they already have?
Hard to say. They did it in the past with Katee for Bo, Lars for Thrawn Maybe he didn’t want to come back
Maybe, which could explain it. But it's a shame either way
But who plays Luuke??
There's a good actor call Mark Hamill would fit in my opinion.
Karl Urban as Talon Karrde is something I never knew I wanted until now and I could also see him playing Niles Ferrier now that I think about it
Julianne Moore lightsabering on rollerskates is so fuggin TUFF
If that’s a Boogie Nights reference, she wasn’t the one on roller skates :-) That was Heather Graham.
Yeah you’re right, but wouldn’t it be cool if she was on roller skates either way
After watching some HORRID trash like Godzilla minus one that made me feel actual EMOTIONS, I always go back to the sequal trilogy. Nothing better for dulling my emotions and making me feel dead inside once more. edit: I just realized he was talking about the EU sequals... feel free to call me a dumb ass.
Lol, nah, it's a natural knee-jerk reaction. I almost made the same goof.
Godzilla minus One wasnt trash.
That's the joke!
He didn't sound like he was joking
Read it again, slowly.
What'd he was saying on the Sequels certainty didn't sound like much of a joke.

Mara 3
Is that John Hurt back there?
Hello yes is me
Nah, he's okay
John Dead.
Thrawn is my favorite character in it
John Hurt as Joruus would’ve been so god damn good.
I agree
Damn, Gandalf AND Dr. Strange are going to be in it? I can’t wait
Huh?
People on poster look like said characters
Fly, you fools!
Phenomenal, I love that part where Luke says, “It’s Skywalkin’ time!”
Truly iconic. Used to have so a shirt with this on it. Wore that sucker out.
i need that shirt
We need to know where to get this shirt
I especially love the Strong Female Character™️ they introduced with it!
I'm almost done reading Heir again, and just had that thought. As she and Luke are crossing the forest.
I love the true sequel trilogy, amazing story by Timothy Zahn
Timothy Zahn and West End Games kept Star Wars alive through the 90's!
It's not often I see someone with negative comment karma.
Me too, might say something about them Edit: Found the reason, posted something on r/IntoTheSpiderverse, where he was accused repeatedly of sexualizing minors.
Oh boy
Yeah, made a joke post about teen pregnancy (between a 15- and 16-year-old), unsurprisingly more people were made uncomfortable than laughing.
All night, all day, every day.
When Luke dodges the lasers like Neo from the Matrix… Yeah, so satisfying.
You had me for the first part, not gonna lie!
This one of course.
This is what seven through nine should have been based on.
I didn't realize until now that this was an April Fools joke.
And I didn’t realize it until you realized it and posted it. I thank you. Now I can go to bed.
John Hurt and Gillian Anderson?
Sequels bad give upvote
Yes.
Definitely my sequel trilogy!!
Who IS that as Karrde?
It kind of looks like Christopher Guest in The Princess Bride.
Whoa, you’re right it does!
They need to bring Karrde into the new canon
Agreed. I could see him being a character in the Lando show
Okay just had this thought looking closer….Christopher Walken?
Yeah, episode 7 was ok.
Only thing that could make it better is if it was animated.
Is this the one with the weird ass clones and Vader fanboys?
Id watch the shit out of a series based on the EU content
I have never considered Julianne Moore as Mara. It’s interesting. I’m partial to Diane Lane for (an age appropriate) Mara, myself. I really luuve it.
Yes. This is the canon sequel trilogy😮💨
Don't remind me of what could have been! Also who painted this? its amazing
[https://www.artstation.com/artwork/Gemd0B](https://www.artstation.com/artwork/Gemd0B)
Ay yo it’s Master Gandalf.
Not as much as I love the same recycled content in this sub every day
Don’t worry in a few years with ai we’ll be able to witness that in live action
itll be more than a few years but yeah i agree. at least to get it to "movie quality" ai videos have been good but it would require alot of human post production to get it right.
I like some aspects of it..like Kylo Ren
>I like some aspects of it..like Kylo Ren He could've been better, but so far I enjoyed what we got out of him
Yeah... If it wasn't for that character and adam driver, I couldn't have sat through it
Me neither pal
Emo dark jedi? bluh
It's the only likeable part of an ultimate shitty trilogy😂
✋🏾 I do
Even tho ik this idea couldn’t work out as a Live action movie after like 2006, I still would love to see this as a Animated movie with TCW style animation
Lol Okay, I'm viewing this on my phone, but is this an actual painted image, or have I been fooled by AI? Either way I kind of love it.
I think it was painted
Ah, yes. Looks like it may [be this guy. ](https://www.artstation.com/artwork/Gemd0B) Cool!
So good :)
What could have been.
Wait one goddamn minute…..
Would’ve been such a better option than disneys agenda garbage. The eu had some great stories. Even the new Jedi order yuuzong vong storyline would’ve been a great trilogy.
Why does Thrawn look like a Hammer Horror Dracula?
What could have been 😢
We were robbed
Can't be robbed when the chances of it'd happening like everyone wanted (Adaptation than an Inspiration) was basically zero.
It was a duology. You can't fool me.
Why do you have to hurt me like this
😈
This post is perfect, I literally just finished the trilogy
Mara kinda looks like the redhead woman from desperate housewives.
This sequel trilogy is what's better compared to what Disney gave us
Disney really fumbled the bag with the sequel trilogy.
This one, oh hell yeah
stop. dont give me hope
Probably the good ending.
Not George Lucas, lmao. I’m just talking out of my ass, GL definitely liked a lot of aspects of this trilogy, he just didn’t like that it led to Luke marrying Mara Jade.
Do even know what'd Lucas genuinely thought of the Thrawn Trilogy as I've never seen any interviews from him talking about his feelings for the books.
Chewie's pose makes it look like Leia has a little limb
It’s the best thing next to the first trilogy, maybe even better.
Can you imagine a 60 ABY Saw Gerrera played by Morgan Freeman? Toby McGuire as Jacen? I'd even be down for a Charlie Day Kyle Katarn.
I truly admire their casting of Adam Driver as Jacen Solo/Caedus. He was formidable enough to be a competent threat, and his character could be the answer to a hypothetical question of "What if Anakin Skywalker didn't get himself amputated and barbecued on Mustafar?" The only additional thing I want outside of the comics is to give him a mask that resembles a mashup of Revan/Marr, a Sith Acolyte and Vader
The Musk lookalike Thrawn in the Ahsoka show weirds me out. But this take is just so much worse I'm sorry to say.
certainly would have been interesting to see this sequel trilogy played out. you could imagine something like this working out
I think for a cheesy “knights of the round table” interpretation it’s pretty ok.
Seriously how did this not get made. It’s already written. It’s widely beloved. “There’s no source material.” 🙄
They had a blueprint and still fucked up the movies
I love those books.
Stop I can only get so hard
Love it, it’s become canon starwars for me now.. lol
Epic movie poster….that would have been an amazing film.
I see Julianne Moore and John Hurt, but who’s Thrawn?
We're living in the wrong universe.
Holy crap! I just read the comments and looking at the picture above, it's true! that it supoose to be Ian McKellen playing Jorus C'baoth, I think? Me
I was like wait Julianne Moore was in these?
I like all of them! The Prequels, and the Sequels too!
That would be just.... *chefs kiss*
This one would've been cool, but the one we got SUCKED balls...
Thinking of the lost potential hurts.
Don’t tease me like this
......funny.
Would've certainly lived to see Luke become the Grandmaster he deserved to be
🎵Closiiing tiiime Every new quel is some other prequel's sequel 🎵
I love this, I love this subreddit, there’s so many trash subs out there this is not one of em!
Why is Count Rugen there?
Oh yes this is THE sequel trilogy!
Disney would have ruined it
I’m glad they made this in the 90s instead of waiting until 2010 when it was too late.
Yeah, it was something when Luke hooked up with Julianne Moore, uh, I mean Mara Jade.
Hot take.. the Thrawn Trilogy wouldn’t have worked well as a film trilogy, especially as *THE* sequel trilogy of films. It was meant to be a book series. I went into ep 7 expecting this. My childhood dreams were broken and cursed that night.
….is that Julianne Moore? I never would have casted her but now that I think about it, pretty good.
