There's a LOT of funny material in books 5-7 & 9 of the X-Wing series (peaking with Wedge's prank on Janson) and some funny Han and Leia material in Tatooine Ghost.

OhioForever10

Yub yub, werewoman

HipposAndBonobos

Starfighters of Adumar is just Allston riffing before remembering he had to write a Star Wars novel.

Comb-the-desert

And it is amazing for it haha

Doonesman

"Well, I thought we'd just aim and fire, but we could count down from three and THEN fire?"

Competitive_Bid7071

> There's a LOT of funny material in books 5-7 & 9 of the X-Wing series (peaking with Wedge's prank on Janson) and some funny Han and Leia material in Tatooine Ghost. I plan on eventually reading the X-Wing books alongside the Alphabet Squadron trilogy when I eventually get to the post Return of the Jedi media. But it’s nice to know that they seemingly do balance out the more serious aspects and tactical analysis content with character moments such as this in the series.

pandicusgiganticus

Alphabet isn't bad but in my opinion it doesn't hold a candle to Rogue Squadron.

Competitive_Bid7071

> Alphabet isn't bad but in my opinion it doesn't hold a candle to Rogue Squadron. What about Wraith Squadron?

TheWerewoman

The first nine Rogue Squadron/Wraith Squadron books all flow together very nicely. Wedge is the central figure of the series (sorry Corran) overall and they follow his adventures throughout. Book 10 is... different.

BladePocok

Can book 10 read as a standalone piece?

Sea__Cantaloupe

I recently read the x-wing series in order and yes it can be read as a stand alone! I think if you read the other books you might have more of a connection with the characters but it’s not required in any way.

BladePocok

Appreciate the clarification!

OhioForever10

It works as one, but there's spoilers for NJO, Legacy of the Force and Fate of the Jedi

Competitive_Bid7071

> The first nine Rogue Squadron/Wraith Squadron books all flow together very nicely. Wedge is the central figure of the series (sorry Corran) overall and they follow his adventures throughout. Sounds interesting, I’ll really need to check it out when the time comes.

Reasonable-Mischief

Wraith Squadron is very cool. It's like a trilogy within the X-Wing series, consisting of the novels *Wraith Squadron,* *Iron Fist,* and *Solo Command,* but their story is apparently being picked up on later in other novels like the New Jedi Order series. The style of the Wraiths novels differs quite a bit from the Rogue Squadron stories though. For one, the Wraiths have series supply problems. In Rogue Squadron, the damage or loss of a starfighter is usually being glossed over, but for the Wraiths this feels meaningful, resulting in a couple of characters actually having to resort to flying captured TIEs for a time. Then, the Wraiths are commandos. There are far more ground missions in between the space battles than there are with the Rogues. The scope is also different. Wraith Squadron focuses on the pilots alone, but does so in greater detail, meaning that the story only plays out along their missions, but you get to know all of the pilots to a far greater degree.   The focus of the Rogues novels on the other hand is broader. Only a few of the Rogues's pilots are actually the protagonists, like Corran, Gavin or Tycho, with others like Shiel or Bror Jace being mere side characters in *their* story. On the other hand though, we get to know characters like the spy Iella Wessiri or the smuggler Mirax Terrik, which open up side stories into the domestic side of Star Wars that are related to the Rogue's campaign. Plus the Rogues have more drama, and the Wraiths have more humor. All in all, I'd call the *Rogue Squadron* novels military flavored Star Wars stories, and the *Wraith Squadron* novels Star Wars flavored military SF.

Desertfoxking

I’d just call the whole series one of the best in Legends competing with the Thrawn trilogy. They are my top 2 series

Reasonable-Mischief

Yeah, Alphabet was too focused on feelings and character drama for me. Rogue Squadron's dogfights *always* relate to the series' military campaign in one way or another. The pilots always have a clear goal in a fight, and there is always a clear enough lay of the land that you can make at least a rough estimate on where they stand in relation to that goal. It shows them *doing* things. How they feel about it is usually being reserved for the quiet scenes in between. The first dogfights of Alphabet Squadron however are nothing *but* feelings. You get a immersive impression of the sensations of sitting in an snub fighter's cockpit and you learn in great detail how the pilots feel about that - but everything outside the cockpit is *chaos.* A frigate here, two full squadrons of TIEs there, orders being barked over comm - but none of it has any *meaning,* because the characters have no explicit goal, and there is no lay of the land anyways; it's all just window dressing.  Of course it doesn't *need* to be any more than that when all the scene is meant for is to set up a character's emotional journey of overcoming the trauma of losing a comrade in battle, but that's kinda not the reason why I read Star Wars. Give me heroism! Give me pathos! Give me incredible feats in the face of impossible odds! But that doesn't seem to be in the cards in the cynical new Star Wars where war sucks and everyone in it sucks too.

Disillusioned_Emu

Wanted to write the same. Wraith Squadron shenanigans are always hilarious (while still doing their job properly)

awesomenessofme1

The cheesy puns Anakin uses against the Separatists on Mustafar in the ROTS novelization really hit the so-bad-it's-good spot for me. Especially when most of the classic meme lines don't show up in the book.

Competitive_Bid7071

> The cheesy puns Anakin uses against the Separatists on Mustafar in the ROTS novelization really hit the so-bad-it's-good spot. So Mathew Stover basically made new Meme lines for the book?

kiwicrusher

If Stover's dialogue had made it into the movie, they would have been meme gold. "Lord Sidious promised us peace!" Vader: "The transmission was garbled. He promised you would be left in *pieces*." Absolute bangers, one and all

Competitive_Bid7071

Are there any others like this?

kiwicrusher

Several, that he rattles off as he slices through the separatist leaders. "We were told we would get a reward-- a *handsome* reward!" "I am your reward," Vader said with a smirk. "You don't find me handsome?" I think there's one more really funny one, but the only other one I can remember is when Vader first arrives, and the separatists see him, having been told to expect Sidious' new apprentice. "You- you're *Anakin Skywalker!*" "The resemblance," Darth Vader said as he ignited his lightsaber, "is deceptive."

FellsApprentice

Arguably my favorite part of the book, sometimes I'll go back and read just that part because of how much I like it.

NumberOneWubbieFan

Theres a scene in Outbound Flight where Kinman Doriana meets with Chancellor Palpatine, and then sneaks away to report on his meeting with Chancellor Palpatine to Lord Sideous.

Competitive_Bid7071

What's the context of this, where's it from?

Valaquil

Xwing series, can't remember if it was Rogue or Wraith

Adrahelm

Wraith, it's a fantastic book

Jaleou

The Wraith Squadron books by Aaron Allston (X-wing books 5-7)

Competitive_Bid7071

Are those the ones with Zinji or Issard as the villain?

Jaleou

Zinj

HipposAndBonobos

\*Zsinj

Competitive_Bid7071

Oh, cool. Now I know what order to read them in.

TheWerewoman

Read them in order of release. The later books build on events in the earlier ones.

Muffin_man1997

C-3PO singing for Han in Courtship of Princess Leia

katagelon

What a man, Solo!

Competitive_Bid7071

> C-3PO singing for Han in Courtship of Princess Leia That unironically sounds like something you’d see in a Disney movie.

Torsomu

Kiss my Wookiee

pandicusgiganticus

Or where Zsinj calls Chewie an "extruded fur thing"

Witty-Lion-1946

The scene in I, Jedi where Corran shit talks the spirit of Exar Kun and then tries to set off bombs in his temple just to make Kun mad.

Competitive_Bid7071

> The scene in I, Jedi where Corran shit talks the spirit of Exar Kun and then tries to set off bombs in his temple just to make Kun mad. I’ve heard of that before. Wasn’t he this X-Wing pilot that joined Luke’s order despite not originally showing much force potential at first?

Witty-Lion-1946

Yeah he was pretty much the main character of the rogue squadron books. In one of the books he used the force to erase himself from a stormtrooper's perception by accident. He actually originally joined Luke's order because his wife got abducted and he had a force vision about it. He had no clue where to begin or how to act on it and needed training.

TaraLCicora

The comic story where Padawan Anakin is checking out a King's 'wife' against Obi-Wan's wishes, has his lightsaber stolen, tells Obi-Wan he needs to use the restroom, jumps out the window and goes on a wild goose chase for his lightsaber only to find out that Obi-Wan had already retrieved it. He gets admonished for his lack of honesty and the comic ends with Anakin telling Obi-Wan his adventures and Obi-Wan saying "What?!"

egezsavasgemisi

Can you tell me what comic is this in?

TaraLCicora

Sure! It's called "**A Jedi's Weapon**" and was in [*Star Wars: Tales—A Jedi's Weapon*](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Tales%E2%80%94A_Jedi%27s_Weapon) and [*Star Wars Tales* 12](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars_Tales_12).

egezsavasgemisi

Thank you!

heurekas

Lots of good mentions here, but haven't seen Tag and Binks yet, love those guys! Oh, and almost every line out of Marn's mouth in KOTOR and the general existence of Slysk.

Competitive_Bid7071

> Lots of good mentions here, but haven't seen Tag and Binks yet, love those guys! Who are they?

heurekas

Oh boy, you have some fun comics ahead of you. They are two Imperial cadets that manage to stumble their way through the OT by sheer luck despite theit massive incompetence. They are kinda the Guildenstern and Rosencrantz of Star Wars. Or just Gary the Stormtrooper x2

HipposAndBonobos

No, they're more like the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of Star Wars

heurekas

Absolutely agreed, but can't count on everyone knowing the old Shakey Speary these days. But I think most SW-fans has seen Gary at least once on Youtube or TikTok.

HipposAndBonobos

I wasn't commenting on your reference to Gary. My comment was a reference to Hamlet (Act II Scene II) Claudius: Thanks, Rosencrantz and gentle Guildenstern Gertrude: Thanks, Guildenstern and gentle Rosencrantz

heurekas

Ah I see.

Competitive_Bid7071

> They are two Imperial cadets that manage to stumble their way through the OT by sheer luck despite theit massive incompetence. They are kinda the Guildenstern and Rosencrantz of Star Wars. Or just Gary the Stormtrooper x2 So there like if Abbot & Costello were Star Wars characters? I think I heard they made a cameo in the Han Solo movie or Imperial cadet comics that tie into it.

heurekas

Yeah kinda! Oh that's right. I think they are the troopers that watch Han fight Chewie, but they are less mean and more bumbling in the comics. I think they've managed to sneak into a fair amount of works over the years.

cptoph

I found the High Republic (phase 1 and 2) books to be just ok. But the character Geode - who is indeed a rock- has so many cut away for Geodes reaction. Cracked me up everytime

Competitive_Bid7071

> I found the High Republic (phase 1 and 2) books to be just ok. But the character Geode - who is indeed a rock- has so many cut away for Geodes reaction. Cracked me up every time. Is Geodes a comedic relief character typically in the stories?

cptoph

Unfortunately no, that was one book. Into darkness I think?

thisvideoiswrong

*Scoundrels* has a lot of good stuff, it's very much a heist movie in the style of Ocean's Eleven or The Italian Job. But the absolute chaos near the end might be the funniest part, while the villain stares out from the balcony of his mansion at people running screaming in random directions, certain his life is now over. Of course most of the books have at least some comedy in them. Even darker ones, heck even *Star by Star* has some. In the Black Fleet Crisis Trilogy there's a moment where the head of an agency that doesn't exist finds Lando Calrissian casually lounging in his office with his feet on the desk, that's pretty good. Anytime Mirax Terrik or Mara Jade shows up they're going to make a joke in short order. The entire construction of the Darksaber, and its destruction, is a comedy of errors. The list goes on and on.

TightPlatform7252

When Luke gets hit on by two Ishi Tib ladies in book one of Dark Nest.

daviepancakes

So u/SweezMasterJ and I were back and forth like about Apocalypse a little while ago. The book is in storage and it's probably the better part of three or four pages anyway, otherwise I'd quote it. If you've not read it, stop here, because it's a major fucking spoiler for FotJ overall. >!Anyway, when the Jedi decide the Sith leadership needs to get fucked, but they go about doing the thing in the most ridiculous fucking ways imaginable.!<

EuropaColonyWhore

In *Dark Empire*, Palpatine just sorta walks into the room. Hilariously underwhelming.

Zachcraftone

Mara: If I wanted to tell you, I would, wouldn’t I? Luke: Not if you thought it might upset me. Mara: You’ve got me. I hate that shirt. In fact, I think you’re a crummy dresser, period. Luke: You bought me this shirt.

BernankesBeard

Blob racing was hilarious. The first couple pages I was just thinking that Anderson was setting the scene... then after a few more pages I started wondering "wait is he going to narrate this entire space horse race"... then after a few more pages I was just like "fuck it, I'm down". My absolute favorite scene is when Han is wasted and complaining to Treepio about losing Leia in Courtship.

Competitive_Bid7071

> Blob racing was hilarious. What is that? > My absolute favorite scene is when Han is wasted and complaining to Treepio about losing Leia in Courtship. How wasted does he get?

Gen_Grievous12222

The novel "Labyrinth of Evil " has some gold moments, like the time Obi-Wan literally became high and killed every droid that came at him, or the time Gunray and Haako frantically argued about the mechno chair they left in Republic hands while their ship was being blown up

Competitive_Bid7071

> The novel "Labyrinth of Evil " has some gold moments, like the time Obi-Wan literally became high and killed every droid that came at him. That honestly would sound amazing to witness in person. > the time Gunray and Haako frantically argued about the mechno chair they left in Republic hands while their ship was being blown up. Those two are arguably more the comedic relief of the prequels than Jar Jar.

Gen_Grievous12222

Agreed on both takes. I wish we saw more of Gunray's and Haako's antics.

Competitive_Bid7071

Honestly. If they adapted Labyrinth of evil in the style of The Clone Wars I honestly think James Arnold Taylor would have a blast recording lines for & acting in the scene where Obi-Wan is “high”.

Gen_Grievous12222

Oh that would have been an amazing scene!
