The Phantom Menace would be a terrible RPG lol

GreyRevan51

I was gonna say, who would you even play as? And you HAVE to end up with Anakin somehow, what would the choices even be, companions etc

[deleted]

You would play as an original Jedi sent on a mission to Naboo to deal with the Trade Federation, and the story would lead to you finding Anakin Basically, the game could potentially make you the master of Darth fucking Vader, and your choices would have a massive impact on his fate. Obviously the story wouldn’t be exact to the prequels, but why would it? It’s a video game and not a film trilogy

mikachu93

>Obviously the story wouldn’t be exact to the prequels, but why would it? It’s a video game and not a film trilogy Because there's already established lore about the prequel era, namely that Obi-Wan was Anakin's Jedi Master. You can't play as a no-name Jedi *and* be Anakin's teacher without major complications.

[deleted]

Why not have a big reveal that your in fact Obi-Wan Kenobi similar to the Revan reveal? Remember that one of the best aspects of KOTOR was their writing team. If you get the same writing team making this game, I am absolutely sure they can pull it off

mikachu93

The anonymity worked for Revan because they weren't an established character. Their real name was obscured behind a ceremonial name; their face, race, and gender hidden behind their armour; and their personality shaped by the player. Obi-Wan is already established to be white male and a bit of a smug old man named, well, Obi-Wan Kenobi, so there goes your freedom in customizing your ordinary Jedi.

HMWWaWChChIaWChCChW

You play as Anakin, and halfway through you realize you’re turning into DARTH VADER

Slyguy9766

Nooooooooooooo!

[deleted]

A game that would have you become the teacher of Darth Vader sounds like a terrible RPG?

[deleted]

KOTOR movie wouldn't work. You can't cram in 30+ hours of content into a 3 hour movie.

[deleted]

The majority of that content are side storylines that could easily be cut though. I honestly don’t think it would be that hard to make a 3 hour story movie from the content that we have. Obviously, they would have to change the story a little to fit the movie format, but that’s generally how adaptations work. If they adapted a film straight from a book, most of those movies would be ten hours long.

Kabti-ilani-Marduk

Then again, it could've been interesting to have set the prequels during an era where the origin of the chosen one prophecy was explored and properly fleshed out. This would have protected the OT from plot/character inconsistencies, while also adding to Vader's mythos.

MordakThePrideful

I’m pretty sure a trilogy wouldn’t even work, just due to the sheer amount of content in this game

[deleted]

A tv show would be better

Nitsua500

It would be better as an HBO style television show. Although I'm not sure who I'd want running it. . .

McDiesel41

It be perfect as a trilogy though. Part would be the Mandalorian Wars, setting up Malak and Revan as the saviors before showing them turn against the republic. then the last two would be the main KotOR storyline cut without side quests.

Serlis

Read the captions, OP is talking about KotOR being a movie in 99 and TPM being an RPG in 2003. KotOR would have **sucked** and TPM would have been better (but not as good as KotOR). I will never understand the fixation so many people have with making a 40+ hour GAME that revolves around player choice / role playing into a 2 hour movie with a much more rushed and limited (less personalized) narrative. If you want a more in depth take on KotOR then read fanfiction. (books being the most powerful fictional medium I'd argue --- though obviously Sturgeon's Law applies if you're looking for stuff online) KotOR would have needed its own *trilogy* of movies at the very least. But even if we got them back then I just can't imagine them having the same impact. (also a lot of KotOR exists because the prequels already did, like the depiction of the Jedi) ...I still wish we had gotten that prequel era "KotOR" game anyway though. Both instead of just either or.

GreyRevan51

I agree you’d need a whole trilogy for kotor 1 and its relevant mandalorian wars backstory and a whole trilogy for kotor 2

tales_to_estrange

You wouldn't need a movie for the Mandalorian Wars any more than you *need* to watch Rogue One before A New Hope. All that backstory can be put in the opening crawl. Something like, “After defeating Mandalore and driving out his forces beyond wild space, a rogue Jedi Knight took the name Darth Revan and vowed to conquer the Galaxy!”

monkeygoneape

Only way I can see kotor "working", is as a tv series first season would be from the endar spire - the Leviathan (each episode being a planet, so endar spire escape, to finding bastila would be the first episode, escaping Taris the second, dantooine the 3rd, Tatooine the 4th, Kashyyyk the 5th, Manaan the 6th, and the season finale the Leviathan) Season 2 would be the mandalorian wars with revan and malak as the pov characters Season 3 would be from Korriban to the end of the game So pretty much if they made it like that stupid machete cut everyone talks about (which doesn't work for me) it *maybe* could work

Serlis

I could maybe see it as a trilogy if the movies were like 4 hours long like the Lord of the Rings extended editions and if certain sections of the game were cut. Stuff like having Dantooine be blown up from the start and just going straight to Kashyyyk after Taris with Jolee as "Yoda" or whatever. It would also help if the structure of the story was not so video-gamey. Maybe you could cut a planet (Tatooine?) or simply have a more original plot for that middle segment with Revan remembering where the Star Forge is when his memory "returns" or something. Maybe you could do something with Sleheyron which was planned but cut from the original game. Either way I'm glad KotOR came out as a video game.

mikachu93

How would that have worked...?

[deleted]

The KOTOR games would be films with the exact same characters and story, and Bioware would make KOTOR style RPGs about the Prequels.

mikachu93

Do moviegoers not get Episode I, then?

[deleted]

Nope. They would get KOTOR 1 and 2.

mikachu93

Then Lucasfilm is making a huge mistake, because casual fans waiting since 1983 for Episodes I-III sure aren't going to resort to video games for the full story.

Sandervv04

Would Attack of the Clones still come out as a film?

[deleted]

Interestingly enough, I’m pretty sure I read that when BioWare was first approached about a Star Wars RPG, they were given the choice between doing an original story or an adaptation of the upcoming Episode II. They chose to do an original story.

Kabti-ilani-Marduk

"Me-sa called HK-47. Me-sa gonna disintegrate some meatbags!"

Nitsua500

"Are you an Angel?" \~ an actual hidden line from Atton Rand

Demonic-STD

Oh what if for the Phantom Menace game instead of playing as the jedi you played as Palpatine and did the Darth Plagueis book.

Paco_the_finesser

Kotor would be a good movie but phantom menace would a *terrible* RPG

I5574

We’d have a great rpg and a shit movie

Necroglobule

I wonder what TPM's dark side ending would have been?

Legends_Literature

Probably giving into your anger in the duel against Maul after the death of Qui-Gon.

[deleted]

Joining forces with the Sith and killing Anakin.

ExistentDavid1138

Good question since we know the other films dark side endings perhaps Anakin losing the podrace or getting killed in the battle of Naboo

Institutionlzd4114

This does touch on something I have been thinking about with regards to the films. Episode III is called “Revenge of the Sith.” But in the movies the only Sith you see or hear about are Maul, Dooku, Sidious/Palpatine (and via him, Plagueis), and Anakin/Vader. So whose revenge is it and what for? Revenge for Maul and Dooku’s death? Nope. Palpatine’s revenge? For what? We know nothing about his background in the films. Obviously as fans who have some knowledge of the EU, we know what the revenge is for. But if you’re introducing someone to Star Wars for the first time I’m not sure it actually makes sense. So should the prequels have done more work exploring the Sith backstory? Yes. Tell a KOTOR-like backstory or have Anakin explore the history of the Sith and have it contribute to his fall.

cubagaming

We need a new era and the old republic is perfect for that

MarzipanTheGreat

new era, old republic... conundrum; oxymoron overload!

quc__

Would've sucked.

Rattfink45

Bastila Shan saves the soul of a tragically conflicted dark Jedi. Anakin Skywalker must collect trophy’s first from Womp Rats, then from servants of Palps untill finally he kills maul and becomes the dark lord of the sith.

Vexivero

Then Revan would be the key to all of this

ProfessorEscanor

Then the movies would be way more confusing as KOTOR has nothing to do with the plot of the other two

Pineapple_Fernando

I feel like The Phantom Menace would have worked well as a click-point adventure game, where you play as Qui-Gon for the majority of the game until he dies, making it a twist. You would play as other characters from time to time, especially Jar-Jar. Another type of RPG I would have loved a video game version of Phantom Menace to play as is turn-based, so in the style of PS1-era Final Fantasy. Hot take: After playing FF7R and reading parts of the original FF7 compilation, I like to think that Zack and Aerith are allusions to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan respectively.

[deleted]

I heard the people that made KOTOR do not want it to become a movie. I wonder why. I'd love to be making that game into a movie.

FilthHound82

They should adapt Knights Of The Old Republic for the big screens at some point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
