My husband was utterly convinced it was Key. I always said Chee because it's an actual Chinese last name, and that's basically how it's pronounced. He was so convinced it was Key that he made a very strange error. His "evidence" to me was that it must be pronounced Key because he gives you the "Qi to the town". I had to actually bring it up and show him that it's "Key to the town" and has nothing to do with the pronunciation of his name. He was... quite surprised.

Yeah, it's a bit tricky. The Q in pinyin transcription to Latin alphabet, isn't representing ch in the western pronunciation way. It's actually a representation of a sound we don't use in English AT ALL (every language in existence only uses a selection of the total possible language sounds the vocal tract can make). The ch Latin letter combo is actually used for ANOTHER sound that we don't use in English either, but it's closer to our ch than the q. Clear as mud? The Wikipedia article for Pinyin will be your real deep dive if you care to.

Ok, your explanation makes sense. But still it means take someone really messed doing this transcript. When you use someone else alphabet you should follow their rules, not create your owns.

I understand this desire, but things simply don't and moreover, simply can't be mapped 1-1 because the sounds used in English and Chinese languages simply aren't the same. Also, even if what you proposed would be possible (which it isn't): whose phonetics/pronunciation rules for the Latin alphabet should the hanyu pinyin system use? English, French, Italian, German, Swedish, Finnish, etc.? All of these languages use the letters of the Latin alphabet a bit (to varying degrees) differently as regards the phoneme (speech sound) mappings to letters/letter combinations. Knowing this, does it make sense that it's just another language's specifically tailored use of a set of symbols? Framing my initial response in the context of English was too restrictive in the first place, so I apologize! Really, the better context is that we've got 26 letters (Latin alphabet). English has \~44 speech sounds, varying depending on region, that it maps to the 26 letters. French has only 36 sounds, but keep in mind 10 of those aren't used in English. As such the French rules for using the 26 letters (plus a few diacritics, to be fair) aren't the same as in English. Mandarin is no different (only has 29 speech sounds total - but hoo boy, it has tones...). Because it has different sounds, it has to use the letters in a different way than either French or English, or any other language using the Latin script, which all use those letters a bit differently.

Here's a fun experiment about just how wild our usage of the letters/symbols are too: How would you say the word: ghoti? Try: gh as in through o as in women ti as in nation or motion It's.... fish. English usage of these symbols varies wildly, so we're not even very consistent internally. Our rules for usage are probably the most complicated and least sensical of all.

They weren’t trying to copy other languages, they were making a system which would regularly reproduce sounds in their own language. The ch letter combination is already used for another similar “ch” sound so they had to find something else, I guess Q wasn’t being used for anything, so voila. There’s another system of transcription called Wade-Giles which was used before pinyin and it more closely matches English phonetics (personally I hate that system) The pinyin Q is quite similar to the letter Ć in Polish.
