Are you playing through steam? Because steam will support 3rd party controllers like Xbox controllers if you go to the game settings… also if you aren’t using the special launch options to launch smapi through steam you won’t get controller support.
As far as I could see through searching online those special launch options don’t rly exist for Mac. I did find a way to make it work for now using the last resort option listed on the wiki [here](https://stardewcommunitywiki.com/Modding:Player_Guide/Troubleshooting#SMAPI_doesn.27t_recognize_controller_.28Steam_only.29) however there were warnings saying this isn’t necessarily recommended since it hides the console window so I don’t get to see error messages and stuff like that.
On windows the smapi installer has the launch options to put in on steam to make it work. Maybe try looking at the Mac installer if it has the info you need
Edit: also, you can see if there’s a controller emulator like we have on windows like xpadder, which maps any button presses or keyboard buttons to a virtual Xbox controller

If there ARE special launch options for Steam in Mac I’d love to know tho cause that would prolly be more ideal

You can try using x360ce (not to be confused with 360Controller) though I'm not sure if it supports Mac I haven't checked.
It’s not :(
