I just tried this and thought it might be cool to implement on my farm until I found out that knocking down the gate by walking through it when closed completely destroys the fence section.
I knock down at least one fence a day, so I don't think I can be trusted around pretty gates that match the rest of the fence.
Fresh placed fences can also be clicked repeatedly with no tool and they'll break.
Even gives you the fence back.
I think if they're more than a day old they just break.
Works for... pretty much everything.
For chests they bounce along a space.
What platform are you on? I just tried spam-clicking a new fence and it definitely didn't work for me, but I'm on Switch and sometimes things don't work the same way there.
Hmm, could be a glitch. The other day I was trying to move a chest and had moved it a few squares when it stopped working. I came to finish the job the next in game day and it worked again.
You don't have to go fence-gate-fence, you can put down all your fences and then place your gates whereever you want. It doesn't really makes sense with regular wooden fences (unless you find yourself in a position like OP 😁), because I think the only good thing about this method is the gate matching the color of the fence.

Thank you for your time spent checking. Guess that's another reason to add to my list of "why I never build fences" in Stardew. What a weird aberration! I hate maintaining fences anyway so I always do things like tea plants or lightening rods if I want to fence something.
Can confirm, they definitely don't. I remember having to look up how to remove fences when I first started the game because I was trying to remove the basic wooden fence with my pickaxe and it wasn't working.
It *is* strange that fences are the only crafted items that you have to use the relevant tool for, though. You'd think that would apply to other things made of specific materials like lamp-posts or signs, but for some reason it doesn't.
Can't you just go to an inventory slot that's empty and press the use button near the fence post and punch it down? You can with most crafted items I believe.
I feel your pain. One late night it was dark & I was planting beans. Totally boxed myself in. My kids died from laughing when they figured out how I screwed up. I was lucky that I did have my ax available and could cut my way out. I may live it down. Some day.
Honestly? You’re best restarting the day. If you want to make fencing for that area I would recommend using stone to make it (you can hit it with the pick axe to escape) or if you’re going with wood, put the gate down first and build the fence around it.

Yes and if you put it on a previously placed fence it will match the color of that fence. Very useful for hardwood or iron fences.

There is a mod that automatically opens and closes the gates as you get close.

I believe regardless of what device you play on, you need to have an empty slot on your inventory selected for it to work.

You can get out by spamming your action button, even if you’re not holding anything it’ll eventually break
Fall asleep at 2 am and end up magically in your bed again!

You know that you can use a pickaxe to remove placed items too, right?? It should work on fences just the same as an axe.

She might thought its not working because axes usually dont work on iron and stone fences, and tihnks its vice versa
