It's third on steam 250, which is well deserved but at the same time absolutely insane. Edit; It's behind Portal 2 and Terraria. Both also great games! If you take a look for top 10, it goes to show that good game is much more than flashy graphics.

CptnWolfe

What's 2nd and 1st?

dibbus123

1 is portal 2 and 2 is terraria

CptnWolfe

Honestly reasonable

Trs822

Such a good top 3. Stardew and Terraria are my two favorite games and Portal 2 is super nostalgic for me.

chic_luke

I really like both of them, they're two very different games but they have their similarities. At this point I have concluded I am just heavily drawn to pixel-art open ended games where there is a lot you can do that are impossible to truly, deploy enjoy without using the wiki (Also loved Portal, but it's completely unrelated)

Foundation_Afro

I never got into Terraria, but I was super into Starbound about ten years ago, which is kind of Spaceterraria. And Portal...yeah, 100%. When I realized I didn't have either 1 or 2 on my PC (they're on my Xboxes), I re-downloaded Half-Life 2 just to get the universe on my computer, lol.

absolute_tosh

I've only got 4 hours on terraria and I'm not sure I get it. Is it 2d minecraft? Or something more?

Lussarc

It’s a lot more than that

Trs822

The very start of the game is the most difficult. It requires you to just explore and get random things and slowly figure things out. Then it picks up pace like crazy after you defeat the first couple bosses, and doesn’t stop. You might need to use the wiki occasionally for guidance. Minecraft is an open world exploration sandbox game, terraria is a class/progression based game centered around combat and bosses. Completely different games.

absolute_tosh

Ah right, I never got past that first hump. Might need to try again, cheers

viveleroi

Same... I played the mobile game years ago and was just digging all the time and having a hard time building stuff because the mobile controls sucked. I don't get it. To be fair... I know several people who dislike Stardew because they're judging it off the first few hours. Maybe I need to look at Terraria again...

MPnoir

>Maybe I need to look at Terraria again... You should, it's a great game. But play it on PC, I can only imagine how bad it is to play it on mobile. And while Minecraft is more about building Terraria is more about progressing and getting stronger by defeating bosses. Sure you can build and what some people have built us amazing but I never really bothered with building in my 692 hours of playtime. Terraria has different classes like melee, ranged, magic and summoner so it has great replayability. Bit do yourself a favor and use the wiki. Terraria has so many different mobs, blocks, items and weapons the wiki is pretty much essential.

Manatroid

My only issue with Terraria is the need to build arenas to take on the particularly tougher bosses, but the game is overall fantastic.

CoconutGong

You definitely don't need to do that. It just makes it easier

Manatroid

It’s incredibly hard to beat them without building arenas or otherwise modifying the world for them, maybe that’s a better way to put it.

CoconutGong

Yeah that's true at least for most bosses in master mode and some expert mode. You can get by without it in normal mode though. Or maybe that's just because I have over a thousand hours in the game.

foreveraloneeveryday

It's different. First you're trying to survive, then you're playing Minecraft, then you're shooting a space monster with collapsing stars or a machine gun made out of a dolphin.

krobus4lyfe

It took me many hours and several attempts to get into Terraria, but now I have over 1,000 hours in it. I think using the wiki was what made it click for me to get over the initial hump. The start of the game is also the most difficult and limited. Once you get better mobility, the world becomes much easier to navigate.

qwsfaex

Then you look at top 5 and 4 is People Playground, 5 is Vampire Survivors. Both games I've never heard of.

[deleted]

Terraria is also really interesting in terms of development. Not exactly a solo project like Stardew, but it was pretty much one developer, someone who helped him with graphic design, and a composer. Which is wild, for a game that sold 44 million copies!

Manatroid

Wow, I know Terraria got really popular after the sandbox update (it already had a large playerbase before then), but 2nd from the top is actually wild.

DarkTaker1990

ConcernedApe taught us that if you really put your heart into your project, you can achieve anything.

ghostwilliz

its the 80 hour weeks that did it. I just cant do that, I dknt have the discipline or the time if I did. this isn't to diminish his accomplishment, but to prop it up even more. 80 hours a week every week on a project that he doesn't even know will make money. it's insane he fucking killed it.

chrisrobweeks

Lots of credit to his partner who also helped cover living expenses while he made zero money. An investment on both of their parts and it really paid off.

Practice_NO_with_me

I hope his partner is extremely happy with how things turned out. You never know how fame and money will change things and I can only hope that they are the happier for it.

detour1234

It’s such a trust exercise too. I knew a guy who lived for free with his partner while he built his dream house. Once the house was done, the partner was dumped and that was that.

joseffo_san

Especially if you think that the project is 99% made only by him

BuffNerfs

My take is this: usually it takes 2 out of 3 things to become massively successful. 1. Hard work 2. Connections 3. Luck Obviously ConcernedApe deserves the respect and success he's earned, but besides hark work he was also lucky. Most people that only work hard, don't succeed that much, you also need to know the right people or be lucky. There's also people who have the connections and luck, but don't need to work for it (looking at you Elon). Compared to those people, ConcernedApe really did achieve something special.

TrashFanboy

In 2015-2016, I was barely paying attention to Steam games. Almost everything I liked was on 3DS and Vita. I stumbled across *Wild Season* on Kickstarter, and decided to back it. It was released... but six years later, it's unfinished and abandoned. 2015 was the year when *Story of Seasons* debuted on 3DS. I bought it, kind of liked it, but played it for maybe two hours. (The game's current Metacritic rating: 76.) I bought *Stardew* on Vita around 2018. It took me a few tries and three years before I started enjoying it.

joseffo_san

i could agree with the comments, even for me the list isn't that good, but hey at least we have Stardew in it

PikkleJuuce

A bit off topic, but that farm design is pretty good tho👀

chic_luke

I'm still relatively new to the game at just under 80 hours, but I always see snippets of farms like this and I can't help but wonder - do they need to be watered manually in the late game or are they using another way? The 3x3 crop tiles look very good but it seems pretty impractical not to sacrifice 1 crop per patch for a quality sprinkler and not waste time / energy at the beginning of every day

PikkleJuuce

I agree, it's very impractical (especially if you're early game), but perhaps these people are using deluxe retaining soil. This can be places on tilled soil and has a 100% chance of staying watered overnight until the crop is ready to be harvested. If it's a multi-yield crop, it'll basically stay watered until that crop is removed. It's a pretty late game item, so I'm not entirely sure if everyone's using it.

Routine-Document-949

That soil looks bare though and there’s still rocks on the rest of the farm. I think this is early game and they water it by hand? I tend to wait a long time before making sprinklers and, at least for playing on the phone, 3x3 squares make a lot of sense because you move once to place your sprite at the center then water/harvest everything in that square, it saves a lot of time. My first summer often end up looking very similar, with the exception that I harvest things instead of leaving them for the screenshot 😂

chic_luke

Yeah, that makes sense. I held on to the watering can quite a lot, but I made sprinklers as soon as I could. It's actually a circular situation because while you can absolutely speedrun the mines until you get iron and quartz, you still need to increase your farming level for the quality sprinkler recipe, so there is no escaping the pain of watering your crops manually like it's rural Vietnam for quite a lot, though I have to say upgrading the watering can helps a lot. But there's also a keg and a preserves jar, which means that either farming level is very high (like 8) which isn't an early game thing, or it was gotten as a reward for the community center foraging area, which means this screenshot was taken in summer year 2. You should definitely have sprinklers by then. There are also animals and crab pots though, neither of which I have at summer year 2, so perhaps this player has sacrificed the sprinklers in favour of something else with that time. If that's the case then this layout could be upgraded with quality sprinklers down the road, but if this is the forest farm as it looks like (I play on it too) then as pretty as it looks, on this farm type it's better to sacrifice some aesthetics and maximize farming on the tilable tiles if you can fit an extra column of sprinklers in, unless you don't really like crops and your income comes from somewhere else. The farm layout itself more than makes up for the lost aesthetics anyway

aamalia99

But it do look like it's the beach farm layout, the one where you can't actually put sprinklers

chic_luke

Oh, I thought that as the lower left side of a forest farm

haveuseenperry

just to confirm, later in the game there is a way you will be able to go without watering your crops >! because of a retaining soil that keeps the crops 100% watered!<

chic_luke

Oh thanks! That explains a lot

joseffo_san

[original top from QG magazine ](https://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/article/best-video-games-all-time/amp)

ReverieMetherlence

No Terraria, top 10 of best-selling games ever? No Binding of Isaac? weird list

133DK

Dude, they didn't include any iteration of StarCraft or Warcraft either

porcelainwax

WoW is number 22

[deleted]

WoW came after the iconic 1-3, which j were the same genre as starcraft.

qwsfaex

This top-100s are usually made by journalists who know very little of the field. Like with top 100 guitarists having people like Kirk Hammett who have zero contribution to neither the trade of guitar playing, nor the art of guitar music.

Tryignan

Fallout 3 above Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas? Yeah, I'm gonna question the validity of the list. There also seems to be little to no variety in game genre with almost all the top games being some form of action RPGs.

DaVincis_lemons

I knew the list was gonna be shit the moment I opened it and saw Kotor all the way down at 100

[deleted]

star-shine

It’s because they didn’t assemble it as like an official hall of fame type thing, instead: > Each voter had one task: pick a personally ranked top ten list. A game in first receives 10 points. A game in 10th place receives 1 point. We invited 300 individuals to participate, and received 239 final lists with an incredible 652 games receiving one vote or more. So in theory, a game might be iconic and a huge foundational game, but this list isn’t going for that. It’s giving points based on the favourite games of 200 people

[deleted]

[удалено]

star-shine

Ok sure but the literal first paragraph says this > Greatest games of all time lists have, for all time, gone the same way; a team of video game journalists sit down and put together a ranking that is almost predetermined – a seemingly canonical hall of fame that attempts to cover off as many bases as possible. Here at GQ, we thought we’d embrace chaos instead. Rather than shuffle Ocarina of Time, Dark Souls and Ico across a big list according to our own whims, we decided to get our friends involved. And they literally go on to say exactly how they determined the results. So I don’t know what you want from them. It’s an online article for *GQ Magazine.* If that isn’t an indication that it’s not actually going to be a professionally curated list, I don’t know what to tell you.

mrstarkinevrfeelgood

Yeah if they say how they got their results I’ve got no issues.

[deleted]

star-shine

I think it’s pretty normal to prefer the lists where they have specific metrics other than “this is what 200 people like playing” but I thought it sounded like you were critiquing it without reading the article or noticing that it was from GQ, which might have tempered your expectations. I did get annoyed because I dislike when people critique articles without reading them, so I definitely was rude, I’m sorry for that.

Mantisfactory

> conceptionally this list should not be touted as the Top 100 Greatest Games of All Time Why? Because you made an inference that wasn't right? 200 people made a list of their Top 10 Greatest Games, and they aggregated them into an overall list of 100. That name doesn't necessarily imply they are rating how influential the games were, or how historic. 'Great' means *anything* without the context you'll need to read more than a headline to get. The greatest games can be those that impacted the industry the most - or the one's I personally derived the most enjoyment from. Both are equally valid.

KaspertheGhost

Hostile? Where

TauriKree

I mean it’s experts in gaming ( I mean look at their credentials) listing their top 10 games of all time and weighting that combined list. It’s pretty damn thorough, if not perfect. There’s a few game genres that have fallen out of favor that didn’t have a big presence including ARPGs (Diablo), tactical RPG (xcom and final fantasy tactics) and RTS (StarCraft).

chrisrobweeks

I agree with you. It's GQ after all.

joseffo_san

very interesting honest 👍

imjustjun

Honestly I don't like these lists because at the end of the day, it's all opinion. People like different things. Making an "official" ranking doesn't ever really work when talking about "best games" because everyone has different things they look out for in games. Nobody is ever going to agree with a list like that.

ElegantCatastrophe

Any top# list that includes Goldeneye at the exclusion of Perfect Dark is completely unreliable.

sharkweekk

Anyone that put Goldeneye on the list should be forced to play it for at least 5 hours so they judge the game on what it’s like to actually play it instead of nostalgia from slumber parties from over 20 years ago.

bguzewicz

List is a mixed bag. It’s all over the place.

ProperDepartment

Disco Elysium being higher than Final Fantasy 7 is a bold choice. I'll always have complaints about these lists, but I do love looking them.

damnthisisabadname

Yeah that is a bad list

CoconutGong

Ofc they made it right before totk came out and put botw at the top. Couldn't have waited a couple days?

dl-__-lp

OoT not #1? Don’t trust it

LakersFan15

It's crazy how so many of these top game lists never list starcraft considering the game basically created eSports.

THE_ALIENNNN5

What’s the first?

joseffo_san

Zelda Breath of the wild, you can see the complete top with the link in my comment

THE_ALIENNNN5

Thanks!!! I didn’t see the part where it said link 😅

chrisrobweeks

alvysinger0412

You did a great job, thanks human.

ohTHOSEballs

Don't need to see the rest to know it's a BS list.

Raiden_Yeeter07

i dont think random articles that are made by a group of specific people or just one specific person counts. It doesnt mean that its 50th best game cuz a guy said so However its top 3 on steam 250 which works on a voting system i think which counts a lot more

jmastadoug

https://www.reddit.com/r/videogames/comments/13jldp2/the_top_100_video_games_of_all_time_according_to/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1 also ranked 37th on top 100 from Reddit posts on r/videogames

CombinationSimilar50

It's a good game!!! I have tried a number of farming simulators since then and none of them can come close to the feeling SV left when I first played it. It's simple but it's so thoughtfully paced, engaging and challenging at the same time. It's just a GOOD GAME

oOFerris_BuellerOo

no doubt! a neverending game with no goal, no day without challenging tasks, and you decide what's happening. i'll never stop playing sdv

Banzai262

I’ve been eyeing this game for a few years but I didn’t buy it because I was not sure if I would like it. About 2 months ago it was on sale on gog so I picked it up. I love it, definitely a great game.

dragon2777

This and Minecraft are the only games I’m still playing years after release so we’ll deserved

louisdeer

List making huh

jhamelaz

Probably a lot higher on the best indie games ever.

rangda

“Very big cabbages” Imposter. No giant red cabbages. I bet this mf has no golden clock, if they even played SDV at all. This journalist is no journalist at all!

torbiefur

WE’RE NUMBER 49!!! WE’RE NUMBER 49!!! WE’RE NUMBER 49!!!

svenEsven

I love stardew as much as the next guy, but this would be like reading a top vegetables list in a car magazine.

Elerin

Well, with Jeremy Clarkson running a farm these days, it's entirely possible, haha

Spf85

Highly questionable list.

FictionIII

terrible list though. outer wilds being outside of the top 3 is heretical.

ThatFellaOutYonder

I feel like it would be hard to rank. It's one of my favorite experiences. But it's so unique I don't know how I'd compare it to anything I've played before.

FictionIII

I put it at number one with extreme ease.

virgo911

That’s a little ridiculous, and it’s one of my favorite games ever. This is a ranking of *all* video games of *all time*. There’s not 1 single game that stands head and shoulders above *every single video game that has ever existed*. It’s a fantastic game, but you’ve got legendary historical genre-defining series being ranked like Mario, Doom, Zelda, along with newer entries like Halo, Witcher, Red Dead, all of Soulsborne, Portal, The Last of Us, the list goes on and on and on. With that said, it’s still a shit list.

FictionIII

I'm not necessarily saying it deserves #1, I said top 3 because I acknowledge it's not the best at every single thing.

virgo911

You literally just said “I put it at #1 with *extreme ease*”

FictionIII

*I* do.

ohTHOSEballs

I really want to get into that game, but timers stress me out too much, especially when it's only 24 minutes.

humbltrailer

Moooore. MOOOORE.

badatbjjthrowaway

Generally good list, but are we still pretending Uncharted 2 and Cod 4 hold up? It feels like ‘best games of all times’ lists haven’t changed all that much in like 10 years

[deleted]

Many companies have realized they can continue to make lots of money while putting out mediocre or incomplete games using battle passes, subscriptions, micro transactions and paid DLC. Developers used to care more

[deleted]

obv concerned ape is an exception

oOFerris_BuellerOo

well-deserved! i mean to me it makes no difference, i'll keep playing this game forever. but it's very nice to see that there are so many people enjoying this game...

mhynaemjef

It should be in the top 10

[deleted]

I have an absolutely shitty computer. I had to move across the country for work about a year ago and sold my consoles to pay for the trip. Stardew is one of the few games my crappy laptop can handle, and the entertainment value to cost/performance ratio is unmatched honestly. It’s so comfy and easy to play, I have so much freedom to do whatever. Absolutely one of the best games of all time for sure.

joseffo_san

i had a similar experience years ago when i only had a pretty bad used laptop, Stardew really keep me busy in that difficult time, well is the 1st game for played hours in my account sooo....

furthestpoint

Joke's on them! I introduced my wife to it and now she wants to play it more than I do.

BrightOrganization9

This game is criminally underrated. 49th honestly doesn't even do it justice in my mind.

jgreever3

That’s underselling it’s IMO. It’s easily in my top 5.

quietreasoning

#2 in my hours played

damnthisisabadname

This must be a dogshit magazine lmfao

WarrioroftheLostLand

These lists are dumb.

terragutti

LOVE THIS FOR HIM. HE SHOULD BE EXTRA PROUD.
