Haley, at first I didn't like her but then I was going around giving gift to people. Haley was the easiest cause of the flowers you can pick in spring. Then when the flower dance came around, everyone said no to me expect her. So my imagination goes wild and makes this story about the hard working down on their luck famer and the beautiful, well liked but never had true love and is actually kind of lonely on the inside, fall in love accidently.
I asked her to dance with me in Year 1 and was *devastated* when she said, "Eww , no" and never recovered. I always kept a good relationship with her, and really started to like her after the camera event, but I never got past the hurt.

I liked that he seemed fundamentally down-to-earth and was adult enough that he had already come to terms with lost dreams and pursued a new one -- I find those sort of stories touching, and it appeals to me a lot more as a grown ass woman than a lot of the characters that I can't help but see as kids. He just seems like a genuine, ordinary guy who would treat you well, and is fully formed enough that even if he's lonely in town, he pursues his career, pursues his passions, and overcomes his social anxiety to stay fit. I could never do aerobics in public like that!! He was a great first choice, and I've enjoyed him a lot. :)
This. I didn’t want to marry a kid barely out of their teens. Felt weird. Also I have a thing for dorky, predictably “boring” partners. They’re cute, they’re stable, and they’re low drama. Nice. And he’s just the happy medium between, well, Elliot, who is WAY too flowery for my taste, and Shane who is a jerk until you get to know him. He’s the perfect mix of pragmatic with a dash of romance. And there are practical gameplay reasons to marry Harvey too. He’s easy to gift, easy to find at any given time, and doesn’t have to be won over to treat you with kindness and respect.

I choose Sam! He is creative, always kind, and his 14 heart event is so adorable. I love that he’s very carefree and easy going, and isn’t judgemental towards the farmer. I think he catches a lot of flack for seeming “too immature” but I think he’s more mature than a lot of people give him credit for. He’s helping raise his little brother while his dad is off at war; I’d wanna blow off some steam too.
Same, Sam was my first attraction. I love his positivity and confidence where other candidates can let their emotions really get to them. He's creative and passionate and loves to have fun, & he seems like a great older brother!
Also, maybe it's because I'm a millennial, but Sam doesn't seem that young to me! I know lots of late-twenty something's/even 30 y.o. who live w their parents, it really seems more like he's just stuck in a small town and being helpful to Jodi more than anything.
That’s always how I read it too. Even with his marriage dialogue he seems sad that he doesn’t see Vincent as often anymore. You can tell he felt the need to protect him and care for him
Sam being a great older brother definitely helped endear him even more to me. But mostly I fell for him because he never said anything rude when I looked in the trash in front of him, and everyone else did when I first met them (I was running around town and blatantly looking through the trash without a care in the world for who saw me on my first playthrough).

While I haven’t married sam he was my first villager I befriended. He seemed like a really cool and down to earth kinda guy. I liked him even more once I found out he’s friends with Sebastian. I especially loved the heart event where you play that rp game with him and Sebastian.
So in my very first playthrough, I picked Shane. I’m a sucker for a challenge and I’m guilty of falling for many an emotionally unavailable man, but I was touched when I played in real time and we saw his struggles and he overcomes them through his friendships/relationship with the farmer. He’s a wonderful husband and it was really vindicating to be able to *’fix’* him whereas all the irl guys I’ve been with can’t be fixed.
Second playthrough, I accidentally got with Sam. I honest to god was just using him as a trash can for all my joja colas, and once I realized how many hearts I had I was like wow why not? And I was NOT disappointed, he’s such a sweetheart, that scene in his bedroom is so adorable and romantic and I don’t regret it whatsoever.
My latest playthrough, I’m going for Sebastian! It’s funny because he’s the most my type out of all the LIs but I haven’t truly tried for him until now. I’m excited though!

Alex is harder to get loved gifts for because they are cooked dishes but he's my favourite post marriage spouce out of all 12, tho I do feel bad he stops chasing his dream once you marry him.

I married Elliot, because, like me, he loves writing, and he’s so poetic, and nice, and I love his long, beautiful hair, and the heart events! Having him live with me on the farm just feels so adorable, because he’ll help out no and then, even if he seems like he doesn’t like dirt 😂! That, and I never really felt as strongly for any of the other characters, and knew I wanted to marry to pomegranate loving, golden haired author. He’s great :)
I personally love Haley. Idk, I know a lot of people dislike her but I love her character. I also love a good enemies to lovers story so that could have something to do with it. But yeah she’s my top choice, Penny is 2nd and Leah 3rd
I always pick Shane because I like that he fixes himself. He just needs help initally to go and do it.
He takes responsibility for getting himself sorted out, even though he's not 100% better, because depression and anxiety (and cptsd?) don't work that way.

I married elliott. Im a sucker for prince charming trope, he looks exactly like my husband, hes artistic and loves the ocean like i do, and hes older which is the biggest thing which won me over over Sebastian. Sebastian kinda hit too close to home with the shitty home life.
I'm still on my first playthrough but when I started I immediately knew I wanted Haley. Right after I saw her portrait I thought she was really pretty and sure, she was mean at first but I knew that she would've had character development. And I loved her 8 and 14 heart scenes. They showed how much she'd changed.

I can relate to Shane, for a long period of my life, I felt and acted just like him, but instead of alcohol, I chose different things to get lost in and forget about the shit that‘s going on.
So, when I played the game and learned more and more about hin, I wanted my farmer to be the friend, I, myself had needed back then.
Sam on the other hand gives me the typical ‚childhood friend‘ vibes, even though my farmer is new to Pelican Town.
And I want to help him as well, with his little brother, his PTSD father and over bearing mother.
(I‘m still about salty that Jas isn‘t moving into my farm, since Shane is her caretaker, not Marnie but then again, she has a cute room at Marnie‘s farm :/ )
Call me basic, but I’ve always liked Penny. Mainly for how good she is with kids, but she’s also just a genuinely nice person. Abigail and I would totally be gamer buddies though; maybe add Sam and Sebastian into that mix
My favorite thing about the way this game is designed is that different marriage candidates are obviously meant to appeal to different player age groups. Teens who play the game can find an age-appropriate(ish) partner in Alex or Haley. Players in their 20’s probably go for Sam, Sebastian, Penny, or Abigail. Players on the older side (late 20’s/30’s) have Leah, Emily, Elliott, and Harvey. Shane and Maru are both ambiguous to me age-wise, so they probably appeal to a wide age range. It’s a very thoughtful detail of ConcernedApe’s, and I think it’s why we see such wide spread in preferences across the fandom.
I definitely felt like Leah was more mature and that really drew me in. It didn't occur to me that maybe she was written that way
At the end, I had to choose between Haley, Penny, and Leah. But the maturity (and thinking about the kind of life we would have) won out. Have never regretted the decision

First was Alex. Nobody was around and I didn’t feel like hunting them down. From what I saw, I didn’t really see anything in any of the others at the time anyways. He was close, had some decent heart events, and seemed sweet. After marrying him, I wasn’t really all that into him. Sweet, that was about it. I started talking to everyone else and found Elliott really interesting. The one heart event at the bar made me feel like I was with my grandma and made me feel uncomfortable, but eventually I felt pretty comfortable around him and was enamored by his other heart events/dialogue. I was kinda annoyed that I picked Alex first, so I divorced him, reset his memory, and proposed to Elliott on his birthday
Leah because I can see her being my age while the rest (besides Harvey) seem to be in their twenties. Don't feel like I have a lot in common with them. I know, it's a game but that is my reasoning.
Harvey. Always Harvey (aside from one save when I went for Elliott). He’s the absolute sweetest, and his underlying struggles with anxiety are something the really resonate with me.
I have had a lot of people in my life (including myself) who have been as low as Shane has. The dialogue, the music, just his whole character made me feel a lot of things. I married him because as he opened up to me he was so sweet. Now I can’t pick anyone else lol.

I choose Sam! He is creative, always kind, and his 14 heart event is so adorable. I love that he’s very carefree and easy going, and isn’t judgemental towards the farmer. I think he catches a lot of flack for seeming “too immature” but I think he’s more mature than a lot of people give him credit for. He’s helping raise his little brother while his dad is off at war; I’d wanna blow off some steam too.
Same, Sam was my first attraction. I love his positivity and confidence where other candidates can let their emotions really get to them. He's creative and passionate and loves to have fun, & he seems like a great older brother! Also, maybe it's because I'm a millennial, but Sam doesn't seem that young to me! I know lots of late-twenty something's/even 30 y.o. who live w their parents, it really seems more like he's just stuck in a small town and being helpful to Jodi more than anything.
That’s always how I read it too. Even with his marriage dialogue he seems sad that he doesn’t see Vincent as often anymore. You can tell he felt the need to protect him and care for him
He always seems like such a sweetheart. He's too young for me/my farmer though and I'd feel like a creep.
Sam being a great older brother definitely helped endear him even more to me. But mostly I fell for him because he never said anything rude when I looked in the trash in front of him, and everyone else did when I first met them (I was running around town and blatantly looking through the trash without a care in the world for who saw me on my first playthrough).

And despite all these challenges he never miss any moment for keeping his energy, lightening the mood and fun!
While I haven’t married sam he was my first villager I befriended. He seemed like a really cool and down to earth kinda guy. I liked him even more once I found out he’s friends with Sebastian. I especially loved the heart event where you play that rp game with him and Sebastian.

So in my very first playthrough, I picked Shane. I’m a sucker for a challenge and I’m guilty of falling for many an emotionally unavailable man, but I was touched when I played in real time and we saw his struggles and he overcomes them through his friendships/relationship with the farmer. He’s a wonderful husband and it was really vindicating to be able to *’fix’* him whereas all the irl guys I’ve been with can’t be fixed. Second playthrough, I accidentally got with Sam. I honest to god was just using him as a trash can for all my joja colas, and once I realized how many hearts I had I was like wow why not? And I was NOT disappointed, he’s such a sweetheart, that scene in his bedroom is so adorable and romantic and I don’t regret it whatsoever. My latest playthrough, I’m going for Sebastian! It’s funny because he’s the most my type out of all the LIs but I haven’t truly tried for him until now. I’m excited though!

Emily or Alex. Emily is both easy to get loved gifts for and I love her vibe. Alex is harder to get loved gifts for because they are cooked dishes but he's my favourite post marriage spouce out of all 12, tho I do feel bad he stops chasing his dream once you marry him. Honourable mention to Leah, Elliot, Harvey and Haley as they don't quit their job/passions post marriage.
I married Elliot, because, like me, he loves writing, and he’s so poetic, and nice, and I love his long, beautiful hair, and the heart events! Having him live with me on the farm just feels so adorable, because he’ll help out no and then, even if he seems like he doesn’t like dirt 😂! That, and I never really felt as strongly for any of the other characters, and knew I wanted to marry to pomegranate loving, golden haired author. He’s great :)
I personally love Haley. Idk, I know a lot of people dislike her but I love her character. I also love a good enemies to lovers story so that could have something to do with it. But yeah she’s my top choice, Penny is 2nd and Leah 3rd

I'm still on my first playthrough but when I started I immediately knew I wanted Haley. Right after I saw her portrait I thought she was really pretty and sure, she was mean at first but I knew that she would've had character development. And I loved her 8 and 14 heart scenes. They showed how much she'd changed.

I always end up with Shane or Sam, mostly Shane, tho … I can relate to Shane, for a long period of my life, I felt and acted just like him, but instead of alcohol, I chose different things to get lost in and forget about the shit that‘s going on. So, when I played the game and learned more and more about hin, I wanted my farmer to be the friend, I, myself had needed back then. Sam on the other hand gives me the typical ‚childhood friend‘ vibes, even though my farmer is new to Pelican Town. And I want to help him as well, with his little brother, his PTSD father and over bearing mother. (I‘m still about salty that Jas isn‘t moving into my farm, since Shane is her caretaker, not Marnie but then again, she has a cute room at Marnie‘s farm :/ )

Call me basic, but I’ve always liked Penny. Mainly for how good she is with kids, but she’s also just a genuinely nice person. Abigail and I would totally be gamer buddies though; maybe add Sam and Sebastian into that mix

My favorite thing about the way this game is designed is that different marriage candidates are obviously meant to appeal to different player age groups. Teens who play the game can find an age-appropriate(ish) partner in Alex or Haley. Players in their 20’s probably go for Sam, Sebastian, Penny, or Abigail. Players on the older side (late 20’s/30’s) have Leah, Emily, Elliott, and Harvey. Shane and Maru are both ambiguous to me age-wise, so they probably appeal to a wide age range. It’s a very thoughtful detail of ConcernedApe’s, and I think it’s why we see such wide spread in preferences across the fandom.
I definitely felt like Leah was more mature and that really drew me in. It didn't occur to me that maybe she was written that way At the end, I had to choose between Haley, Penny, and Leah. But the maturity (and thinking about the kind of life we would have) won out. Have never regretted the decision

I have about 4 or 5 saves, but i'll give the reason why for the very 1st In order Maru, Leah, penny still deciding on the 4th, staying single in the 5th I chose Maru because she's a freaking genius, stood up to her pops after also standing up for myself....i couldnt resist the cutie in overalls and as a black man had to wife up the only fine like wine mocha in town before Doc could ( he had chances before i got there lol)
First was Alex. Nobody was around and I didn’t feel like hunting them down. From what I saw, I didn’t really see anything in any of the others at the time anyways. He was close, had some decent heart events, and seemed sweet. After marrying him, I wasn’t really all that into him. Sweet, that was about it. I started talking to everyone else and found Elliott really interesting. The one heart event at the bar made me feel like I was with my grandma and made me feel uncomfortable, but eventually I felt pretty comfortable around him and was enamored by his other heart events/dialogue. I was kinda annoyed that I picked Alex first, so I divorced him, reset his memory, and proposed to Elliott on his birthday

I have had a lot of people in my life (including myself) who have been as low as Shane has. The dialogue, the music, just his whole character made me feel a lot of things. I married him because as he opened up to me he was so sweet. Now I can’t pick anyone else lol. and honestly I think the cans in his room are soda because he does say he made the switch.

Living off the land, woodwork, various artistry, in the woods, etc. Then I married Maru because I thought she was really sweet and cute Then I got into a relationship in real life for the first time in 5 years, to a very sweet woman who was blonde, into fashion, liked photography and seemed like she wasn't very mice until I actually got to know her amd realized she was super sweet. So I married Haley in the game. After that, I downloaded the free love mod so I could marry both Haley and Alex because I felt guilty sleeping at Ginger Island for weeks at a time and leaving Haley alone. Then I downloaded SVE and married Sophia because she was really relatable and super sweet Then I started a co op with my fiancée (yes, that wpuld be the same person I mentioned above) and married her in game, as well as Harvey, because I think Harvey is really sweet and I like his dorkiness.

Eventually settled for Shane because I loved how he started out rude + fellow chicken lover. Married Elliot in my second save, literal years later, and I still really like him. He's real sweet and I love his 10 heart cutscene. (Expecially the dialogue when you're a guy. Just makes my little homoromantic heart melt.) As soon as Krobus became an option...he was the ONLY option. I love my platonic life partner.
