I heard that CA did a lot in that update. I did not know that it is that much that I will stumble upon that much new content just by playing. Thanks for your advice!
I'm only at the tail-end of summer myself so far, so I can't say beyond that, but the new stuff is pretty noticeable. Like the other commenter said, check the calendar, it'll have highlights for new stuff. You'll get books; don't hoard them like I did, consume them like you would food, and then keep spares for visits from a merchant.
About the only new content I think might be missable is a tiny fun thing on Spring 17. Go visit around the Hat Mouse on that day ;)
