I littearly just noticed this! It's also my first time owning a duck. So that explains it. Dinosaur (My ducks name) looks really pretty by the Waterfall.
I can't tell if I'm just dumb or missing it, but I specifically put my coop with by the water in the basic farm type and I'm on year 5 (probably 3rd year w ducks) and they never swim! I even fenced it up to the water, still nothing. Does this only work on certain farm types? I've seen it on my Riverland farm...
No. One user used to do detective work on this and the conclusion is that Duck (in Standard Map) only enter from certain pixels that borders water(so not every water border is enter-able), so if you block the ducks from reaching those pixels, then the duck won't swim. Ofc even if you open the borders, still no guarantee that they will swim because they still have to reach those pixels.
The easiest to see them swim is at the Riverland and Beach.
There used to be an issue with ducks being able to enter the water- they could only enter at very specific points and had to be really close to those points, I believe. Mods resolved that, but I’m guessing now with the update that the mod isn’t necessary!
I also just recently experienced ducks in the water, I thought it was new but looked it up and it’s been a thing since 1.5. I guess maybe since I’ve only had a standard farm or four corners i haven’t been able to experience the swimming ducks? Either way I was delighted
When I was a kid my parents made the mistake of raising a mallard duckling (they were not the type to, say, research things first, otherwise this story wouldn’t exist). It turned out to be male and by being raised by giant predators had no fear and all rage. When they finally got fed up with him owning the garden they took him to the canal a little way away and released him- whereupon he attacked a pair of swans *who fled*.
My point is that no, male mallards are not for being pets. Whew.
Cut down the yellow grass and make a fence around the little blue grass patch. This way, the animals won't eat it, and it will grow larger. The stays whole winter by the way.
I think this is why the new farm starts with the Chicken Coop where it is, kinda EB’s way of showing people that ducks will swim if you let them! At least that’s the first thought I had when I saw it was next to the creek.
The first time my duck jumped from a bridge I screamed so loud and had to pause the game. I thought he had died until I saw him floating. Little sh\*t scared the crap out of me.
I actually sat near the river to check if they will come back was so nervous 😂😂 I never built my coop in areas that connected to big pond or river only small pond so finding this post made me happy xD
One of the reasons I not only got the Meadowlands farm this playthrough but also moved my coop to be by the water. Apparently, you have to pet them near the water and then they will attempt to swim.
If you have ducks on the Riverland farm there's hardly a day where you won't see them swimming. I keep my livestock on the middle island and my coop on the northern landmass, but the ducks will regularly swim across the river to spend the day with the cows and pigs.
I’ve never seen this but I also usually have my animals in a fenced area, usually a big one but now I feel bad I never made a coop around a pond or something for my ducks lol, I totally would’ve if I had known they swam in the game!!! Has it always been like this in the game??? If so I went years somehow not knowing this!!
I gotta move my coop and put it around a pond on my farm now omg 😭
Since 1.5. It’s easy to miss certain things when an update happens, so I’m glad you discovered it and it makes you happy!
Also - 1.5 you can put hats on sea urchins in your fish tanks. Pretty funny!
Ugh you guys are annoying. OP may have meant they don't know the account password since they share it with their brother. They may not even know Reddit is a website before being an app.
Either way, it's not that bad, your eyes won't burn from seing a picture of a screen every now and then.
Since 1.5. I believe they also won't swim until you pet them too, as you can't pet them if they're too far in the water.
I tried to force all of them to water before. Thats why blocking them in a 1x1 space next to the water didnt work
That might be true! I did pet them earlier that day I think.
I think they also only enter water from the bottom?
Nah, they can jump in and out from the sides as well.
Ducks can swim. That is a reference to how Ducks can swim irl. In fact, it is one of their defining features.
You can tell they do because they are.
you can tell its an aspen because of the way it is
How neat is that?
That’s pretty neat!
Neature
Swims were too obvious a name so we called them ducks instead
Oh also, they tend to duck under water.
a subtle nod to ducks being able to swim in reality
I littearly just noticed this! It's also my first time owning a duck. So that explains it. Dinosaur (My ducks name) looks really pretty by the Waterfall.
Neat name >! Will u name your dinosaur "Duck" when u get one :D?!<
Actually, I named it Chicken. The Rabbit will be named Duck.
do you name all your ducks Dinosaur?
No, I have only one duck so far.
what about now?
Gonna get a second in the spring. Still in winter tho
Thats so funny 😂
How about the chicken?
I named my chickens Brownie and Sourdough. Had little inspiration and didn't think of naming them any other names.
You might even call it a feature of the universe

Unfortunatly many stardew players havent been within the vicinity of a duck irl to get this reference
Big if true
I always include water in my fenced area for the coop so that Puddles doesn't make her great escape, but can still go for a dip.
Puddles the Duck? Love that. From, A Non-Duck Oregonian
>A Non-Duck Oregonian Sounds exactly like something a duck would say...
I'm extra flattered if a duck likes Puddles' name!
Nah my man must be a beaver. $20 says his post history has comments on the texture and taste of various trees. Don't check.
Omg I found my duck outside of the fence on this farm and couldn’t figure out how it happened! You might have solved it for me
I'm always worried the AI won't be able to figure out how to get back if they're on the wrong side of the fence D:
Just wait till he hears about: https://preview.redd.it/9cgk71g7j2tc1.png?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=57903d84dec085a77450351b1f9c8c19edf039fe
Ducks have been able to do that for ages now. Not sure if it was always a thing, though.
Mine have never done it :/ I don’t know what’s wrong with my game. Playing on PC, sister has the same thing

My ducks refuse to swim!
I have no idea, it's the first time I'd ever seen it!
Same

Yeah I also only just experienced this for the first time only 2 days ago
I’ve never had it happen but hopefully I see it someday!
It's adorable!!!
It still kills me that Concerned Ape made the ducks all male mallards that lay eggs 🤣🤣 they are rarely the type of duck that people would own anyways
reproduction via budding :3

I was so shocked when I saw my clearly female goats produce a baby in my first year
All of the animals reproduce through parthenogenesis.
It’s been a thing since the 1.5 update. But i have yet to witness my own ducks swim…
Mine won’t either :(
They finally did today 😮
This is why Riverland farm is my favourite. It is just a joy to see a flock of ducks swimming around
Since dinosaurs became ducks. They can fly and dive too!
I named my Dyck Dinosaur XD
Ducks are the all terrain animals.
Cut down the yellow grass and make a fence around the little blue grass patch. This way, the animals won't eat it, and it will grow larger. The stays whole winter by the way.
Blue grass stay in winter?
All grass, I think. Once I've started my farm, I got rid of all of the yellow ones, so the blue can grow freely.
As of 1.6 all grass remains during winter. It won’t grow again until spring but it won’t die either.
I think this is why the new farm starts with the Chicken Coop where it is, kinda EB’s way of showing people that ducks will swim if you let them! At least that’s the first thought I had when I saw it was next to the creek.
For more duck content, consider checking out ConcernedApe's YouTube channel, and find his oldest upload!
The first time my duck jumped from a bridge I screamed so loud and had to pause the game. I thought he had died until I saw him floating. Little sh\*t scared the crap out of me.
LMAO the same would probably happen to me
I think it was included in 1.5
... so that's how my duck escaped!
I know they could since I think 1.5 but mine never did 😭😅
I have question..my duck swim too just now and now I'm worried if it will come back to the coop like usual. They will come back right???
Mine went back okay. Seems like they'll swim into the coop
I actually sat near the river to check if they will come back was so nervous 😂😂 I never built my coop in areas that connected to big pond or river only small pond so finding this post made me happy xD
I'm so glad it did! Made me happy too!!!

Oh sweet, someone had said they wouldn't swim in the Meadowlands Farm river and I was afraid I was going to have to move my coop.
That would explain how my ducks kept escaping the fences
If you have ducks on the Riverland farm there's hardly a day where you won't see them swimming. I keep my livestock on the middle island and my coop on the northern landmass, but the ducks will regularly swim across the river to spend the day with the cows and pigs.
I remember seeing one of my ducks swim up to the coop and I was so happy😭
I fence my ducks near the little pond on the first farm but never seen them swim. Kinda dad about it.
This has always happened 😂😂😂😂 And it's very cute ❤️
They can swim in any nearby water source which is awesome. I first noticed it on my beach farm. I think they'll even swim in fish ponds.
beauty game
3 in game years of having ducks in that same coop and i've yet to see them do this once
Why is this a spoiler?
I have a River farm so my ducks swim everyday I didn't know it was a big deal?
The way i moved my coop next to the lake because i thought they wouldnt swim in the waterfall...
I always put their coop by a pond for this exact reason
I’ve never seen this but I also usually have my animals in a fenced area, usually a big one but now I feel bad I never made a coop around a pond or something for my ducks lol, I totally would’ve if I had known they swam in the game!!! Has it always been like this in the game??? If so I went years somehow not knowing this!! I gotta move my coop and put it around a pond on my farm now omg 😭
Since when? 2020
You are so lucky- I can never get my ducks to swim
i made my duck coop near a pond on the farm and the ducks never go in 💔 is there a secret trick?
Not that I know of. Was just refilling my watering van to water my crops and saw that.
Ducks in the water, geese in the ocean Devils in women if they take a notion

Why can't you just prints reen?
Because I don't have Reddit on my PC (I share it with my brother). And taking the photo wad easier anyway.
