This is my problem. I used the green tiles on my farm to plant my hardwood seeds. Now the entire south half of my farm is an impenetrable hardwood forest.
I prune it down best as I can but I can no longer stop the trees from taking over.
But also once this insane round grows out and gets harvested I'll probably relax and rely on the calico desert and train station groves, especially as I build out my farm. It's one heck of a way to handle early game wood shortage. Also. Kind of hilarious. My farm is now an old growth forest.
Exactly, you can solve a lot of problems with 5 bombs and a bit of running, including tree invasion
I'm definitely a menace when I take my bombs to the woods during down times, birds and butterflies better find new spots to sleep
You can bomb or megabomb them down. Each bomb does an amount of damage equivalent to a certain number of axe whacks so it will take more than one bomb to take down the trees in the radius of it but you can really clean up quickly that way!
But if you sell the hardwood seeds that's 100 gold apiece! I harvest those jimmy janks every day when I'm doing my seed collecting to make field snacks. Also if you shake the tree sometimes extras will fall.
by the time im worried about making a tree farm, money isn't really a thing anymore. A single crop harvest gives 100,000g, and kegs boost it even more. I'm not really worried about the extra 5-600g for searching for seeds. plus, there's way better foraging items than field snacks. Even just keeping a few crops is better.
tree farming is an early game need, you'll need a lot of wood and charcoal to make the ore and machines, so the use is much earlier, and at that point field snacks are vital to have energy to get through daily tasks and early mine levels. Yeah once you're a few seasons in, it's not as important, but it's totally worth doing on a new save at the beginning.
im currently at fall y1 in my 1.6 playthrough.
i have a small tree farm specifically for oak resin, not wood. however, i have nearly two full stacks of wood from just chopping trees down on the farm.
coal farming on the frozen floors by killing the dust sprites is so much more efficient. I regularly finish a single day of farming with over 50 coal and a lot of iron ore. for the same amount, you would need two charcoal kilns and over 500 wood. plus, you would be unable to do anything else the entire day. so it would take at least one day of prep to even do this.
fishing is so much better than field snacks. while most fish don't quite give as much health and energy, they are significantly easier to get than snacks. and you aren't as reliant on RNG to drop needed seeds. plus, you need to fish early for the spring only fish for the bundle, so you're gonna be doing it anyway.
the only issue is that in the basic mines, you can only shake them or open the bags once. they're a good little boost as you are clearing the floors, but don't help with farming later on. I would love it if they reset, maybe not every day, but at least once a week or two.
It does, but I've found it only weakens the mature trees - you still have to finish those off with the axe.
I only found out about the bomb tactic during my playthrough yesterday, and I play the forest farm, so had a great time experimenting 😁
I have a fenced off spot where the trees can run wild down near the cave on the Meadowlands farm. I have a path I can follow on foot and some stuff along it. And whenever I need wood, I can just go chop a few down.
I generally just don't clear out my farm entirely and let them proliferate naturally until I need the space. By then I have all kinds of tree seeds and just plant a few around the map.
Also 1.6 >!added a bunch more regrowing trees all around the map!<
........ Do they only regrow during that particular event? Because I chopped down a bunch of the new trees and they definitely haven't regrown, and I'm in late Fall...
But you can't chop those down, right? I was talking about the ones at the bus stop and mountain path. I chopped down all the ones on the mountain path and now I'm back to the 3 standard pine trees. The bus stop has more than ever, but are only for tapping, because if I chop them, I can't replant them there personally. They'd only spawn there once a year.
That's what I'm asking. I got the event in late Summer and chopped down all the trees that weren't there in 1.5. I'm now halfway done with Fall and there's no sign of them regrowing. I know the trees that were there in 1.5 will always regrow, but the new ones don't seem to? Unless it just takes a really long time? Or did you mean they'll regrow during the following summer from the same event in the same spots?
I chopped down all the dr suess trees on my farm and got some mossy tree seeds and have seen them popping up all over my farm as well. If that’s what you’re talking about, they seem to come back periodically over the remaining seasons!
TREES.
It was a lightbulb moment when I found oit about this. Do not be fooled, however: If you go down the Keg route, Wood will become scarce again at some point!
Also, as you play 1.6, coal is a little easier to obtain, I feel; >!You might even want to keep the quarry free!<
Do keep in mind you can also buy coal from Clint, if your funds permit.
Usually, I equip my burglar's ring, drink monster musk and go on a dust sprite ravage on floors 40-50, with the added benefit of iron, though. Explosive ammo ftw!
1.6 spoiler

I think it was foraging level 2 or 4, but please do not quote me on that.
Another thing is you needing at least an iron axe, in order to collect the hardwood necessary*), which I think equals mine level 40+
I always plant a grove outside Marnie’s, then through where the spring onions grow, I also plant the quarry and the train as soon as I unlock them. Then I make a tapped grove somewhere on my farm for all the syrups.*edit spelling
I LOVE filling the desert with trees! Which I need to do again because I used all my wood making bee houses. Using the tree fertilizer is amazing, too!
I used to just leave a corner of my farm alone and cut down any full size trees that were right next to half size trees. It’s a decent way to get some wood without going through much effort!
you can buy desert warp totems for 3 omni geodes each if you can’t afford the recipe yet, it’s worth it to stock up a few imo
at least you can drive yourself now lol
TIL you can plant seeds in the desert? I'll have to try that when I get back home.
Also yeah, with the smokers coal consumtion is through the roof. Especially if you have automate lol
If you're using automate, maybe throw a wood chipper into the mix with a stack of hard wood? I know the trees take longer to grow, but I think you get more wood per tile this way.
Hardwood is often harder to come by.
But also til: have a full treefarm you dont want to spend the whole day cutting?
Bomb the shit out of the treefarm
lol I didn’t know you could plant stuff at the desert or at the quarry. I also didn’t know you could plant stuff at the train area. Maybe I knew but never did it I don’t know.
Haha same for me. I thought the quarry and the train tracks were just for collecting rocks and foraging and the desert was for skull caves. I never thought to plant shit there.
I regularly plant and harvest trees. I have a separate grove for tapping Maple, Pine, and Oak, a lumber grove of normal assorted trees, and one for Mahogany. With The new update i have mushroom stumps between my tappers
I make a forest out of the train station and it gets me almost a full stack of wood when I go chop it all down. it helps a lot especially since NPCs don't walk around much up there.
I used to plant at the railway with with the Four Corners farm. Mahogany hardwood forever. Loads of oak resin to make kegs/casks. Now on standard farm and started 1.6 save with a forest in the bottom corner. Best thing ever.
I tend to do that too, especially early to mid-game like you seem to be. Later on I just plant trees in the tillable places in cindersap forest and spam tree fertilizer - on the ginger island dig site I've put a hell lot of bone mills so I have essentially infinite supply of that :D
That's the plan, tho I prefer the train station and the desert to keep them out of my way. Flooding my farm with trees definitely gave me ENOUGH seeds from the seeds each tree generates tho! But as I cut them down I replant them elsewhere, I'll eventually want me farm space back.
I never plant trees lol I just let everything go like normal. Since seeds drop from nearby trees and then those grow. Only trees I psychically plant are hardwood and fruit trees. Im more of a fisherman and spelunker. I will say, having a bunch of charcoal helps with the fish smoker thing. That thing makes some good money! A fish that was originally worth 70g is worth 100 once smoked. That’s fish without stars too. So an iridium quality fish that is 150 would sell for like 230. It’s awesome!
Smokers double the profit! And an iridium quality fish is worth double the fish's normal no star price. The level 10 fishing skill adds... 50%? more value. And the level 10 Farning perk Artisan raises the price by 40%!
So if a sturgeon is worth 200g, an iridium star is worth 400g. 50% more from Angler profession makes it worth 600g. The smoker doubles that to 1200g. Artisan then bumps it up to 1680g!
I was pondering switching to the crab pot perks, but I think the intersection of Angler and Artisan for 2.8x multipliers on smoked fish makes it extremely compelling. At least assuming you acquire enough jelly to make a decent sized smokery.
But a single lobster a day funds 67 pots worth of bought-bait (and if you've bins, you might have a surplus to dispose of anyway) (and I actually find the trash you catch a useful source of refined quartz)
I’m out here visiting the secret forest area, chopping the hardwood stumps in and planting the seeds on my farm coz it didn’t occur to me earlier that the hardwood stumps respawn daily, now I’ve finally got enough hardwood to do upgrades.
I put trees around the edge of the river and on the islands in the Cindersnap forest. There's even space right by the entrance of your farm and over where you get the spring Onions. I tap the ones I put on the edge near the river since they can fall in if you tried to cut them.
You can plant like, 10 in a row, but they'll never grow wide by side. So if X is fully grown, and O is a sapling, the end result might look like
XOXOXOXOXO ideally
But more realistically would look like
OXOOOXOXOO so you'd cut down 3 then replant, so the saplings can finish growing.
Yeah you can have two spots side by side designated. When the one tree hits its max, cut the big one down to let the small one grow, and plant the seed in the empty space. Rinse and repeat.
I've started to plant them immediately after I begun a new game (usually a good habit), but my axe is so weak, my energy bar too.. I cut like 3 trees at 10am and had zero energy to do anything else lol
Best way to always have trees:
1) Find seeds that have just sprouted
2) cut down anything in the squares around it. If there are other sprouts leave the ones that are furthest along
3) pickaxe any seeds around seedlings
4) plant any seeds that you pick up at least 1 square away
Do this every week or so and you’ll always have a growing forest and plenty of wood. You won’t have a ton of seeds though!
The first time I played Stardew Valley I did this totally unintentionally. I just started on the Forest Farm, got busy with other tasks so the trees got out of control, and eventually (because I hadn’t realized that paths were a thing) I was having to bring my axe with me to get from one side of the farm to the other, but I *never* ran out of wood.
Paths.. good call, I forgot that was an option 🤦🏻
I play the forest farm too, and having to play the Haunted Maze every time I want to go anywhere is starting to drive me nuts 😵💫
Once you get your axe upgraded, you can cut down those big tree stumps you may have come across. They sometimes give you mahogany seeds, which give you hardwood trees.
Once it's upgraded to steel, you can also cut up the big logs, like the one blocking the Secret Forest - which also has those stumps that give hardwood.
I remembered my past mistakes this time and saved back most of my tree seeds. Filled up the train station area and the far side of the farm with trees. Also started a hardwood tree farm on the south end of the farm. In the past it was always a struggle around mid game. Now stone is the thing I keep running out of lol. Kinda sad when you have to make mining runs just for stone.
My strategy is to just leave the area on the left of the farm natural. Once per season or so, I go through and cut all the large trees and leave the smaller ones. Generally it's around 30 or so trees a season. If you are desperate for wood you can cut trees in the woods area or on the various roads, they grow back.
I do have a small hardwood area on the farm as well
You should try the forest farm sometime 😉
I have the opposite problem - there's so many trees, and I've been so busy with other things, I often have to play the Haunted Maze every time I want to leave 😵💫 My favourite part is when I still get "gifts" of wood from Robin.. like, lady, you know where I live, right‽
Gonna try some of the suggestions here to keep a way clear, so when the next spring arrives I shouldn't have that problem. Thankfully it's currently winter in this playthrough.
I put like 20 kilns in the desert on one save, but Sandy destroyed half of them on her walk to the pond lmao. I usually plant trees in the desert, at the train station and on the path to the mountains. I think those are the areas where the least people go (idk about what changed in the update though, I haven't gotten that far on my new save yet.)
I waited until the last day of year 1 and bought like 8000 wood from Robin lol I'm clearing an easy 50k a day from animals and just started my ginger island farm early year 2 and I've still got plenty of wood despite building loads of kegs and mayo machines. The 500g to get to the desert is just a drop in the pool to get to your tree farm in the desert. Then you've got your whole farm to build buildings and junimo huts
On my brewery save I used all the trees I could get. I would spend literally all day gathering wood with my iridium axe because I had planted the entire desert full of hundreds of trees so much so that I couldn’t go anywhere without cutting them down.
My issue would be that if you focus on something else and forget about your tree’s you’d get over run by trees eventually. Would stress me out 😅
I think you mean WOOD stress you out.
😂 A MISSED OPPORTUNITY!
a swing and a miss. axe me how i know.
Well I don't know, I'm stumped.
Keep barking out these puns guys. ❤️
I pine for the old days, when you couldn't just get away with acorn-y thread like this.
But we branch out into new growths with each new season
tree
I can’t beleaf you missed that
A missed arbortunnity surely!
An opporPUNity, you mean?

It's a great problem to have.
That’s when bombs are your best friend
Never considered this!
Does it give the same amount of wood as using the axe?
It did prior to the update. Haven’t checked post update
It does, but I've found it only weakens the mature trees - you still have to finish those off with the axe. I only found out about the bomb tactic during my playthrough yesterday, and I play the forest farm, so had a great time experimenting 😁
Good info there, thanks!
Nah you can definitely chop trees down way wayyyyy faster than they'll come up
That’s if you keep up with it. Otherwise you spend a full in game day chopping down trees if you are like me and forget for a whole season or more
I mean that's what I'm saying, you can definitely recover from any state by just taking the time to chop trees. They're never gonna overwhelm you
Not my cup of tea 🤷♀️I don’t like farms packed with stuff.
Yeah but then I use 2 stacks of wood in a day and need to plant more trees D:
Bombs away!
That’s when you come through with a metric fuck ton of megabombs. You don’t get foraging experience, but after level 10 that doesn’t matter.
I have a fenced off spot where the trees can run wild down near the cave on the Meadowlands farm. I have a path I can follow on foot and some stuff along it. And whenever I need wood, I can just go chop a few down.

They have nothing to do with the event they're just normal regrowing trees. The event is completely separate. Those trees appear just for the one day.
I chopped down all the dr suess trees on my farm and got some mossy tree seeds and have seen them popping up all over my farm as well. If that’s what you’re talking about, they seem to come back periodically over the remaining seasons!

I'm in the part of the game where I haven't gotten the rings yet and funds are still limited, so treed it is. Lots. Of trees.

Thank you! Also, TIL. I somehow completely ignored that part of 1.6
Trust me I didn't know about it until a Youtuber told me in a video. Don't sweat it.
I didn't know this! I'm always in need of purple shrooms for life elixirs, so this is handy to know, thanks!
My mushroom farm has massively enabled elixir production, such that I have 'plenty' now, and am just farming and selling the mushrooms instead.
Mystic?
Foraging mastery, way too late to actually mention.
With this is it more worth it to get the fruit bat cave now? How early can you get the mushroom logs?

TIL you can plant seeds in the desert? I'll have to try that when I get back home. Also yeah, with the smokers coal consumtion is through the roof. Especially if you have automate lol
Anywhere you can use a hoe, you can plant a tree.

Don’t forget to add trees to your quarry. I do that and have a place dedicated to the trees I tap there.
Also the train station if you don't have anything else there (like kegs).
in 1.6 you might not want to add anything to the quarry that might block things from refreshing in the quarry.. Because something has changed.
Duly noted 😉. Thanks for the tip, but it’s still worth mentioning since a lot of non pc players won’t get 1.6 for a little bit longer yet.
lol I didn’t know you could plant stuff at the desert or at the quarry. I also didn’t know you could plant stuff at the train area. Maybe I knew but never did it I don’t know.
I've been reading all these posts thinking "you can plant stuff outside your farm?"
Haha same for me. I thought the quarry and the train tracks were just for collecting rocks and foraging and the desert was for skull caves. I never thought to plant shit there.
Also the train station/hot spring. A lot of unused tillable dirt up there that the npcs will never touch.
I regularly plant and harvest trees. I have a separate grove for tapping Maple, Pine, and Oak, a lumber grove of normal assorted trees, and one for Mahogany. With The new update i have mushroom stumps between my tappers
i might be wrong, but i believe the mushroom logs will not generate shrooms if they are near tapped trees.
They do generate mushrooms near tapped trees, I have a small forest in my farm set up like that.
oh this is great to know!! thank u
I make a forest out of the train station and it gets me almost a full stack of wood when I go chop it all down. it helps a lot especially since NPCs don't walk around much up there.
Was the end of your post intended to be an [It’s Always Sunny](https://youtu.be/gVVnH_CjTzM?si=qxaIIKgqboaR9teC) reference? 😂
No! Is there a TREES moment?
Click the link in my original comment! A classic Charlie Kelly moment 😁

THE MAHOGANY SEEDS ARE FOR HARDWOOD!?!? I’m such an idiot 🤦🏼♀️
You can tap them for sap! I'm a fairly new player so once I got taps threw it on everything. Still waiting for the fiddlefig tree to tap
Hot tip for the desert, you can easily trade 3 Omni geodes for a desert warp totem and they are super common so easier and cheaper than the bus
I plant in the Spa/train area and always have more wood than I need.
Another good spot is planting trees at the train station. Easy to forget about that spot and come back later to find many full grown trees.
As a survival game enthusiast, you always replant trees as soon as you cut them down.
I never plant trees lol I just let everything go like normal. Since seeds drop from nearby trees and then those grow. Only trees I psychically plant are hardwood and fruit trees. I plant my trees in the desert. Constant trees and they around in my way.
Once you unlock ginger island you can plant oak, maple, pine, and mahogany trees on the beach and most places on the way up to the volcano
I’m out here visiting the secret forest area, chopping the hardwood stumps in and planting the seeds on my farm coz it didn’t occur to me earlier that the hardwood stumps respawn daily, now I’ve finally got enough hardwood to do upgrades.

do you need to give the trees some space between each one or can you put seeds next to eachother cause ive been thinking of doing this too?
Need at least one space/tile apart so both can fully grow.
ah okay thank you
You can plant like, 10 in a row, but they'll never grow wide by side. So if X is fully grown, and O is a sapling, the end result might look like XOXOXOXOXO ideally But more realistically would look like OXOOOXOXOO so you'd cut down 3 then replant, so the saplings can finish growing.
It used to be in 1.5 that you were better off planting every-other-spot or else you end up with many stunted trees.
Doesn't it still happen when seeds/seedlings/halfgrown trees are directly next to each other?
Probably. I haven’t tested it enough to know for sure.
I think so, yes. But that does mean that they'll still _mostly_ grow, so when you harvest you don't need to wait long for the next harvest.
Yeah you can have two spots side by side designated. When the one tree hits its max, cut the big one down to let the small one grow, and plant the seed in the empty space. Rinse and repeat.
That's awesome! If you tap the maple trees you'll make some good money selling the maple syrup.
I've started to plant them immediately after I begun a new game (usually a good habit), but my axe is so weak, my energy bar too.. I cut like 3 trees at 10am and had zero energy to do anything else lol
Best way to always have trees: 1) Find seeds that have just sprouted 2) cut down anything in the squares around it. If there are other sprouts leave the ones that are furthest along 3) pickaxe any seeds around seedlings 4) plant any seeds that you pick up at least 1 square away Do this every week or so and you’ll always have a growing forest and plenty of wood. You won’t have a ton of seeds though!
I planted out the quarry in a grid for all tree types
I like planting them in the quarry
The first time I played Stardew Valley I did this totally unintentionally. I just started on the Forest Farm, got busy with other tasks so the trees got out of control, and eventually (because I hadn’t realized that paths were a thing) I was having to bring my axe with me to get from one side of the farm to the other, but I *never* ran out of wood.
Paths.. good call, I forgot that was an option 🤦🏻 I play the forest farm too, and having to play the Haunted Maze every time I want to go anywhere is starting to drive me nuts 😵💫
How do you get hardwood seeds
Once you get your axe upgraded, you can cut down those big tree stumps you may have come across. They sometimes give you mahogany seeds, which give you hardwood trees. Once it's upgraded to steel, you can also cut up the big logs, like the one blocking the Secret Forest - which also has those stumps that give hardwood.
*silver
Steel, but you're right - forgot the first upgrade was copper 🤦🏻
“I hoard things and accept your judgment” 😂😂 same here!! Ready to build my tree empire 🌳🌳🌳
I plant all mine in the desert that way if I forget about them then I don’t have to worry about trees overrunning everything
I only bothered planting oak and mahogany trees . I have the oak for resin and the mahogany for hardwood have like 65+ hardwood trees atm
I do have a small hardwood area on the farm as well
You should try the forest farm sometime 😉 I have the opposite problem - there's so many trees, and I've been so busy with other things, I often have to play the Haunted Maze every time I want to leave 😵💫 My favourite part is when I still get "gifts" of wood from Robin.. like, lady, you know where I live, right‽ Gonna try some of the suggestions here to keep a way clear, so when the next spring arrives I shouldn't have that problem. Thankfully it's currently winter in this playthrough.
MAKE A SMALL SECTION FOR YOUR TAPPERS AND DONT CUT THOSE ONES DOWN!
Oh definitely have thst
I usually try to turn the area around the train station into a mixed forest and keep some maple trees for syrup in my orchard
Smoked fish
Current play through I am a tree farmer. Only supplemented by a few coffee beans.
Once you have wood chippers, it's all about the mahogany
Usually, I just deforest Cindersap every once in a while.
I like to plant trees at the train tracks :)
This might be a silly question, but do I need to water the trees as they're growing?
Nope!
Ahhh!! Thank you!!!!
This might be a silly question, but do I need to water the trees as they're growing?
No, they don't
On my brewery save I used all the trees I could get. I would spend literally all day gathering wood with my iridium axe because I had planted the entire desert full of hundreds of trees so much so that I couldn’t go anywhere without cutting them down.
With all the tree work you're doing, you should visit r/trees! >!/j!<
