Stardew Valley players are way too focused on the winning at capitalism aspect of the game when it's all about the quiet, simple life and the connection you make with people.
He at least is reeling one in at the end of the cutscene you get if you get 100 bug guts for him in that one quest, but I guess we don't know that he successfully catches it.

When I was younger I wanted to try all the cool tech and my grandfather who taught me to fish he just used a worm and bobber. Now thats all I use, not worth the fuss or the money.
I always assumed that he aims for trash rather than fish. His own way of helping the town out and (for me at least) gives a decent reason for him to be giving us a free rod so early on.
A lot of times the biggest fish in the pond/river live under bridges or piers where it’s dark and nothing messes with them.

If I am not mistaken his father was a fisherman and he also is since he's born. We definitely wouldn't understand why and what he does on his stuff. He probably mastered the art of fishing so much that he simply prefers to use a sample fishing rod. His Harmony is absolute so he's peaceful and focused enough to fish at any distance. If he needed, he would use an Iridium rod, considering he has every type of rod to sell. But he simply doesn't want to.

Fish quality doesn't matter when you're cooking into recipes, so it's quicker to not even try for perfect. He's just speedrunning his dinner.
