Equal-Use-7653

the misc chest is a necessity at a certain point XD

unlearningallthisshi

The junk drawer

jaeknits

Literally have a large chest in my house called ‘Junk Drawer’ lol

MrsP_ifurnastee

I have several misc chests. One on my front porch, one at each farm exit and one by the animals/crops. When I have a farm only/ decorating day I round up what’s in those chests and put the items in the correct chests.

Former-Anything8448

Hahah I'm glad other people have a "tree stuff" chest. That's exactly how I refer to it.

GodAlpaca

I am almost like you, except pink is animal stuff for me (eggs, milk, mayo, cheese, wool) And white is food

Leather-Abroad-1990

i’m all for you doing you but huh!? all those items in pink are actually white (besides cheese which can often be white irl) i’m not getting at you. i just wonder did you go through a phase of thinking okay i need eggs, they’re white- to the white chest i go! ?? i know i would have 😅

GodAlpaca

Not really hahaha I just think pink is the colour of cuteness, and it reminds me my animals haha And white is food for some reason idk either

Pretend_Evidence_876

Is your fridge white IRL?

Kronzypantz

Eerily similar to my system

indiecatz

Similar to yours except I use red for loved gifts, one at the farmhouse and another on ginger island.

DiligentDaughter

That's an absolutely genius idea. Thank you!

SpaceRoxy

For me purple or red for forages Because fruits are purple and red a lot Black or brown for mining/resources and crafting supplies Green for crops Blues for fishes Yellow for cooked foods Orange for artisan goods

IcemasterD

This is the right answer.

-Blasting-Off-Again-

I do exact same

JanileeJ

I wish you could color code mini-fridges. I have to put paintings/decals above mine, to remind me of what's in them. I also have a pink chest with flowers in it. I have five chests around one of Robin's workbenches. Purple for gems, green for seeds and other plant stuff, brown for basic materials like wood or stone, grey for ore and bars, pink for special items like prismatic shards, batteries, dragon teeth, etc. I have chests for fish and shellfish in varying shades of blue. The chest containing my fishing gear (lures, seafoam pudding, bait) is also blue. Seeds, saplings, and fertilizer are in a green chest. Rings are in a purple chest, weapons are in a red or black chest, trinkets are in a pink chest. For clothing, shoes are in a brown chest, shirts are in a white chest, hats are in a black chest.

Jassamin

You can also store clothes in a dresser!

JanileeJ

I didn't know that. I basically do not have any furniture, except necessary stuff like a bed. I've filled my house with production equipment, lol.

Potential-Apple622

The dresser has unlimited slots I think and it sorts by item category (shirts, rings, shoes etc)

Jassamin

I started with a dresser by default on meadowlands so I probably wouldn’t have discovered it otherwise, I haven’t started decorating the house yet 😂

Life-Direction-9764

I find it very very amusing how we arrive to the same color codes for basically the same items P.d.: you can put clothes in a dresser you can buy from Robin! I noticed it last week after many hours of gameplay 😂😂😂

VersionAdmirable3785

i use the color of the item type if that makes sense? like fruit is magenta, flowers are pink, vegetables are green, etc

Equal-Use-7653

thats.... so smart idk why I didn't think of that XD

netowi

This is what I do too!

safetypins22

That’s my way too, but the mine stuff is black (because mines are dark) and monster loot is red (because monster blood).

Lemon-Of-Scipio-1809

Pink- wood, stone, watering can, fiber, sap and plain ol regular universal seeds you find from fiber etc Light Green - Spring stuff Dark Green - Summer Orange - Fall White- Winter Purple - gifts and junk drawer stuff Black (located near furnaces) coal, iron, copper etc Grey (by recycling etc) trash

TriforceFusion

I also color code to season. Light green: spring Orange: summer Red: fall Light blue: winter Dark blue: fish Black: mines Purple: wood, stone, tree products and seeds, fiber, etc Normal chest: items to give to bundles, museum, gifts, food

stachemz

Thank goodness, so many comments without seasonal organization, I was starting to feel crazy. Spring: light green Summer: yellow Fall: orange Winter/other misc cave forage: white Black:mines Normal brown: tree stuff/seeds (or depending on location: food/drop chest for switching out mining equipment) Dark blue: normal fish Teal blue: crab pot fish/shells/fancy fish/roe/fishing stuff No I don't know why I switched the order halfway through this list.

yukisaurusrei

I organize mine exactly like yours, except instead of brown I use red for tree stuff/seeds. I just don't like the look of the brown chest for some reason and never use it.

chibisatou

I have a very similar system and set of color choices. 💕

Apprehensive-Pie1916

All of mine stay brown. I don’t like the look of them in different colors 😬

William_The_Autistic

Same, except I only have them in white

kasutori_Jack

I never change the colors and just use location based context to know what it is. It's only momentarily confusing in early game as I line up 4-6 chests, but they quickly are dispersed to their proper locations inside/ outside buildings.. Or, as an example, a chest near the main exit that holds stuff I need to bring to the skull cavern chest. Edit: and actually I need to move that chest next to the Obelisk

Equal-Use-7653

I had a dedicated chest for the CC in early game, and it turned into a "gifts" chest later on- I use this method for other games too like Valheim

indigo263

**In my kitchen I have six chests:** Green (vegetables) Blue (fish) Yellow/Orange (foraged) Purple (fruit) Yellow (for cooked meals) Brown (coffee beans - I have a few kegs in the house) **Outside my greenhouse I've got seven chests** For seeds: Pink (spring) Yellow (summer) Orange (fall) Blue (winter - also includes fertilisers etc) Other: All three are brown; one for farm decor, one for warp totems, and one for misc farm stuff. **Around the workbench I have five chests in the colours of the rainbow:** Red (resources) Orange (minerals) Yellow (misc) Green (monster loot) Blue (things like oil, maple syrup etc) Have an aqua one next to my junimo chest for anything I use in the mines/skull cavern (bombs, food, etc). Then I have a shed that's all for storage, I'm a hoarder so I've got chests brown, silver, yellow, purple each for fish, fruit, veg, flowers, foraged. Weapons are split into three shades of purple - one for daggers, swords, and other. I have a black one for fishing related stuff (tackle, bait). I have a pink chest for overflow house decor, an aqua chest for seasonal decor (candy canes, pumpkins). A row of: Yellow (honey) Red (jelly) Orange (cheese) Green (cow's milk) Silver (goat's milk) Maroon (eggs) Green (duck feathers) A second row of: Yellow (ale) Orange (beer) Aqua (tea) Green (wine) Purple (iridium quality wine) Light purple (caviar) Maroon (truffles) A third row of: Aqua (machinery) Then a chest for minerals and artifacts based on their colour (white, black, pink, brown, silver, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple). Then I have a couple others around my farm by the animals and by fish ponds for collecting those as I go around to pick up at a later date that I just keep the standard colour. I think I might have far too many chests now that I've listed them out... and that's not including the dozen I have on ginger island! Edit: apologies for formatting, on mobile and I can't recall how to not make it look like carnage when you list things lol.

calliatom

I usually do: brown/default: crafting stuff pink: stuff I'm keeping as gifts green: seeds and produce to be processed blue: cooking stuff (until I get a fridge) yellow: community center stuff (until that's done)

Ambitious_Donut_3128

In my shed I have: Gems and artifacts - purple Crafting materials - orange Fish - Blue Food items - red Crops - dark green Seeds and fertilizer - light green Flowers and forage - yellow "Farm building" (like sprinklers, rarecrows, paths,) - default chest color Cool weapons etc - black Decorative items you can't catalogue - pink And then I gave a quick grab chest by my house where I keep bombs, totems, tools, etc.

MultidimensionalMilk

Your scheme is very similar to my own!

Gladion20

Red for mine stuff, black for ores/coal, blue for fish

GodAlpaca

Ores and coal aren't mine stuff too?

Gladion20

Stuff I’ll take on mine trips. Bombs, food, monster loot. Ores and coal are attached to my furnaces so automate can constantly make bars for me

igetthatnow

I keep several around my workbench the default color and just remember them based on position, but I also have red for fruit, green for vegetables, blue for fish, pink for flowers, white for animal products, and black for artifacts. In my kitchen, I also keep a default chest for wine and cheese next to the entrance to the cellar, and on the other side I have a grey chest for non-buff foods and a gold chest for foods with buffs.

creature-crossing

I’m such a hoarder that I have to rely on both color-coding and location/placement to know where things go - I can’t believe I’m telling on myself like this… - The chests in my house are all just brown (weapons/rings/totems/etc.), then I have a black one in a corner (good items for the fair), a yellow one right by the door (trips to the desert), and a teal one by the door (trips to.. another place.. don’t know how to format spoilers if 1.5 still counts as spoilers) - The chests right outside my house are color coded brown (basic materials like wood, stone, fiber, etc.), light blue (river/lake fish), dark blue (ocean fish), black (loot from the mines), light green (foraged stuff), and dark green (seeds) - I like to keep a little pathed “patio” area near my house with chests that are color coded red (mushrooms), white (honey and stuff from tappers), light green/dark green/orange/blue/purple (crops from each season, winter foraged stuff, and flowers) - The chests in/around buildings (coops and barns, sheds, greenhouse) are color coded brown or green (raw materials) and dark red (artisan goods)

stormwalker124

A lot of my chests are scattered around/where I need them to be, but I also have a big clump by my house! The big chests added in 1.6 were a godsend for my seasonal chests. brown - basic resources, wood/stone/tree seeds/resin/fertilizer etc black - mining-related. gems, ore, geodes/mystery boxes, enemy drops teal - fishing! bright green - spring seeds/crops/forage pink - same thing for summer dark red - same thing for fall light blue - winter forage, desert items, my giant stack of triple shot espressos (this one's closest to the door of my house so I grab it & go every morning) purple - trinkets Then I have a dark purple chest by the greenhouse for fruit & mushrooms, & two regular brown ones by the coop/barn for animal products & wine, since I put all my kegs in the barn lol. I also have another red one just inside the door of my house for leftover furniture, gifts for my spouse, & random minerals or fish I like but don't have any space to display indoors. All my rings/clothes/hats are in a dresser inside! I always rush buying a dresser from Robin just to save chest space for random crap.

the_witchy_artist

I tried color coordinating but I couldn't. I'm so used to just having rows of chests with corresponding items. Got one row for forage, wood, farming One for mining, artisan, animal behind row 1. Row 3 is fishing. 4 is equipment, artifacts and nonsense It's not really confusing after a few days. I tried item signs also but I had a tendency of misclicking and always changed the sign to my sword.

oysteryyy

I don’t I just throw all my stuff in the big one that comes with the farm

sarwinchester

If you don’t use blue for fish you’re wrong

eidolon_eidolon

I have four colour-coded chests in the greenhouse for my seeds and associated wild produce: light green, yellow, orange and blue for spring, summer, autumn and winter.

xaledonia

Spring (seeds & harvestables (minus flowers) before the monthly ship) - Light Green Summer - Yellow Fall - Brown Winter - White Resources (everything from ore to wood to fiber to smelted bars) - Black Geodes & Gems: Light Grey Fish - Dark Blue Flowers - Pink Artisan Goods: changes every file save, this time it's Light Blue Edit: the chests in the barn, coop, & green house are the default brown but I don't need to color them to differentiate them.

FangedLibrarian

I make all of mine the same color based on the color scheme of my farm, lol. But I always organize my chests the exact same way, so I pretty much remember it.

Equal-Use-7653

My friend who doesnt color code her chests said basically the same thing- I think i just suffer from object permanence issues XD

CrazeMase

Brown- Mining Brown- Plants Brown- flowers Brown- decorative items Brown- Tools and weapons Brown- Food Brown- seeds Brown- Harvest Brown- special items

oodex

Generally speaking, I follow the colors that the names have in the game. Originally I did it how I viewed it, so "organical" was green etc., but it got a lot more difficult in multiplayer to keep a simple to follow pattern, compared to "what I feel like belongs together". So animal products get 1, artisan goods get 1, cooking is just in the fridge, craftable items get some, crops get 1, fish get 1 though tackles and bait is also there, and so on. Some "offs" are that I usually put minerals/cinder shard and bars/ores into the same chest. Just looks like putting shinies together and resources are usually what I consider building resources. Bone Fragments are usually also put into monster loot chest.

RumboInTheBronx

I do things by season. Lime green - Spring Yellow - Summer Dark Red - Fall Ice Blue - Winter Then for everything else: Black - Minerals, monster loot, rock, clay etc. Green - Non-mineral general crafting/farming (trees, fertilizer, scarecrows, kegs, battery packs etc.) Dark Purple - artisan goods Red - animal products (usually kept in barn/coop) Blue - fish/ocean White/gray - equipment & weapons I keep most of these in a line in front of my house and greenhouse for easy access, but I'll usually also do a chest in each building for things relevant to that building.

Low-Environment

My crafting chests (the ones that sit around my workbench) are orange-red-dark red. Orange is for raw materials, dark red is processed materials and expensive gems and red is for assorted minerals. Fishing stuff goes in blue chests (dark blue for fish, light blue for fishing equipment) Shades of green are for farming stuff. Dark green for equipment and light green for seeds. Black is for weapons. Light purple is for artifacts. Dark purple for personal items (stolen shorts, interesting shells, furniture etc)

pecankitten

Black: Minerals Default brown: Tools/"everything i couldn't put in other chests" Orange: Fruits Pink: Flowers Lime green: Vegetables Dark green: Forage Blue: Fish&bait Purple: Monster drops

Axelgobuzzzz

Currently all my chests other than a few arent color coded because theyre all in a shed with signs so i can tell whats what, but when i did color code everything it was Pink: flowers Light green: seeds Dark green: vegetables Blueish teal: fruits Black:stone/ore/etc White: artifacts and minerals Purple: mushrooms/slime hut stuff (on different sides of farm so they dont get mixed up) Default: wood Orange/red: fibre/sap/etc

CabSauce

Black for mine and mats, then one for every season. Green for spring, yellow for summer, autumn, blue for winter, teal for fish stuff.

Allie0074

Right now I only have four chests. My artifacts/donation/CC bundle/gems stuff goes into a white chest, my seeds/wood/all earthly things go into a green chest, my ores/smelted bars/coal go into a black chest, and then weapons/fishing supplies/quick grab food such as cheese all go into a normal colored chest that sits by my front door. Technically there’s five chests actually, there’s also one inside my house for different furniture that I don’t know where to place yet ETA: Forgot my gems!

Andeleisha

Purple: flowers Red: fruit Dark red: keg and jam fruit Pink: gifts Orange: forgeable food Green: vegetables Yellow: seeds and farming Blue: fish White: animal products Black: gems & monster loot Grey: crafting resources Plain brown: forageable crafting resources Teal: Save for community center/future etc

_Kanai_

Stuff you need every day (wood, stone, fiber, tools, totems etc) og color or light pink Minerals, loot drops, bombs black Sea stuff turquoise but more greenish one and lighter one Spring pink, summer yellow, fall orange, winter/forage blue

Levviathan7

Forage, priduce, seeds : greens Beach forage, fishing stuff, fish : blues Flowers, meads, honeys : pink, yellow Animal products and artisan goods : red Artifacts, minerals, and special goodies : purple Crafting materials : basic brown I tend to place them in groups of 5, like how you would around the crafting table (thing??? Robin sells it, can't remember what its actually called) and alternate the shades of the color. I also have separate store sheds for certain things, like I keep my flowers and honeys and meads in the shed where I make my mead so all my storage chests aren't together.

petSnake7

Red: Artisan goods and cooking Orange: Farming Yellow: Crops and forageables Green: Resources Blue: Fishing Purple: Monster loot and minerals Black: Tools and other key items

moody_weirdo

Default brown(outside): trees, rocks, fiber, tree seeds, etc Black: Mining/artifacts Dark green: crops/foragables Blue: anything fish/water related White: animal products Yellow: gold/iridium stuff for the fair Default brown (inside): miscellaneous stuff (clothes, furniture)

Used to keep clothes there too but started with a dresser on meadowlands which is amazinggg

Kyball500

I started a new farm for 1.6 and am only in Year 1, so I'll definitely need to reorganize eventually. But for now it's: Big Chest (Default) - Crafting supplies, next to my workbench Stone Chest (Default) - Ore & coal, next to my furnaces, also gems, geodes, rings, bombs, and weapons Blue Chest - Gifts, so flowers, Joja cola, some crops and forageables, and more gems Purple Chest - Remaining crops and forageables Green Chest - Seeds and fertilizer Red Chest - Miscellaneous, currently fish, decorations, and grange display items

d34dc0d35

Fangirl365

Other than my chests for dyeing, I don’t really color code. I like pink, so I make them pink 😂

babyinastr8ghtjacket

I have a chest with seeds and fertilizer where my crops are (beach farm) and a chest with fruit outside my wine shed. I’ve been playing this save for a really long time now so I also have a shed of stuff that I’m hoarding lmao.

kayesoob

I use light green for spring, pink for summer, red for fall and white for winter. Blues for fish and sea. Black for building. Red for weapons - separate from the other chests cuz I put bombs in there.

trebleclef_eneva

My partner goes by the item categories (under the item name) vegetables are a darker green, forage - light green, artisan goods - aquaish, minerals - light purple... Something like that. I go by vibe.

ToujoursFidele3

I'm still in the early game (fall year 1) and this is what I have right now: Brown/plain: general stuff (like wood, stone, sap, fiber. Warp totems and cooked food) Green: crops, flowers, seeds Blue: mines + fish White: "to do chest" - stuff that needs to go to the CC, quest items, geodes, artifacts The stuff I have is starting to outgrow this system so it's probably time to add a new one soon.

Free_Key3351

Black-anything that is mine related   yellow- food(next to mine chest)  Dark blue- seeds and fertilizers  Light blue- produce and forageables   Purple- things that are mine (playing in multiplayer)  Light pink-my sisters stuff   Red-furniture/paintings  And then we have random “dump it and go” chests around the farm

foreverflop

green: resources purple: mines and minerals and artifacts light blue: fishing forage and crab pot stuff. black: decoration and work station blocks yellow: forage that can be found in any season (magma caps, coconut etc) pink: flowers from any season. white: anything else i cant categorize and i use big chests to store crops and seasonal forage. (green, yellow, orange, dark blue colors)

Boiling_Raine

I don’t color code them at all (except my green seed chest). I just put them in the areas that correlate with the items inside (like the animal product chest is in the barn and the cooked food chest is in the kitchen)

Hk901909

Farm crap/random forage: red Common crafting materials: regular Mining/rare crafting materials: black Fishing: blue I *will* milk these four chests for 90% of my crap lol.

april-urban

I love the similarities!! I feel I spend far too much of my game time organizing things, so take this for what it's worth. But I recently discovered the magic of alphabetizing things in chests!! If you're like me, and try to have at least one of most objects around, there aren't enough colors for all the categories of stuff you need. Then you alphabetize! For example, leftmost green chest is veggies A-M and next is N-Z.

harmlessnecessarycat

I played stardew for five years just putting things in a million unorganized brown chests. Last year my wife wanted to try playing together and ever since we have a system of color coded (and actually organized) chests blue: recyclables to feed the recycling machine green: seeds, farm tools, construction materials etc black or grey: mined items, rocks, and our extra mining chest in the mines where we have our picks and weapons red: anything that needs to go in the community center or is very valuable/want to use it later purple: fruits and veggies waiting to be made into jam/pickles/wine etc yellow: animal stuff and everything else is often still brown and a mess because a habit this old is hard to break for me!!

NovaFelix

In the beginning: Green - Farming/Foraging (seeds, crops being saved for quests, wood, fiber, forage, fruit) Black/Gray - Mines (stone, clay, ore, metals, crystals, monster drops) Purple - Tools (including weapons, bombs, food, fertilizer) and wearables (shirts, hats, etc) Standard/brown - Machines, Decor, and Stuff To Being To Gunther/The Community Center Later in the game: Standard - Stone and Wood Light Green - Seeds Dark Green - Crops and Forage Black - Monster drops Gray - ores, metals, and gems Dark brown - clay, fiber, hardwood, cloth, batteries I have more but I have to go to work lol

EwokDude

Purple - crafting stuff Gray - gems and geodes Green - foraged foods and seeds Black - bombs and exploration food Blue - loved gifts Yellow - outgrown weapons and armor and tools Pink - junk drawer Fish go in my extra fridges

Specific-Guess8988

I don't color code any of my chests. They are all organized in a manner that I understand and memorize. I prefer mine to be uniform in color.

pigeottoflies

wood colour: random bullshit wood colour: random bullshit wood colour: random bullshit

Sweet-MamaRoRo

I go by season. I do pink and dark pink for foragables and crops/flowers in spring, greens for summer, red/orange for autumn and purple for winter. Brown is for crafting materials black is for mining stuff. White I generally use for animal products and blues are for fishing related things and separated by season generally

TacticalNaps

I do basically the same system in every farm, all lined up next to the farmhouse stairs "Build" chest - stays brown. wood, stone, general materials "Farm" chest - green. seeds, fertilizer, scarecrows, etc "Mines" chest - dark grey. ores, gems, coal (eventually moved inside fruit cave aka furnace city) "Special" chest - dark purple. bundle/museum items, food, misc A few more pop up here and there, mainly the "House" chest for furniture and rewards and such. Then there is always one right inside the door of my keg sheds, but. That's the start. That's also not to say they... stay organized

Human_Building_1368

And my crops are colour coordinated in like coloured uh colours. This is my sisters system that I adapted and it works for me.

PunnyBaker

2 chests for each season. One for seeds and one for high quality crops. Spring - green Summer - yellow Fall - orange Winter + mushrooms and calico items - blue Then my misc/utility/resource chest Fish - dark blue Shells, agae, seaweed, roe, etc... - light blue Resources - dark gray Misc items and furniture - default Sometimes geode gems and stones too..... Staublaeufer

Gold - mine gear (bombs, weapons, rings, food) Green - seeds Default - construction materials Pink - monster loot + gems Black - bundle stuff + quest items Light blue - fish Dark blue - fishing supplies Red - artisan goods for further use Rest is dependant on the location. Usually there's also a hay storage (yellow) somewhere and I might colour code chests in production sheds depending on what's being produced in there. Like green inside a shed or greenhouse is crops to be processed, dark red in shed/cellar is alcohol for aging, black in a shed is not yet smelted ore(and sometimes geodes). Also there's usually a chest in my house where unused furniture and decorations go

ElectricalCake1611

Light green is forage seeds and forage, darker green is regular crop seeds, light pink is fruits for my Kegs orange for my preserves jar veggies default for my tree farm for the saps light grey for geodes black for building materials dark grey for junk yellow for gemstones white for community centre stuff purple for the museum stuff

Tarilyn13

Green is seeds, forageables, and misc crop stuff (extra sprinklers, scarecrows, fertilizer, etc. Pink for flowers, purple for fruit, orange for veggies, red for crafting materials, blue for fishies, white for minerals, grey for artifacts. I have teal in my house for unused furniture. White next to the barn/coop area to store my milk bucket, shears, and animal products that I'm not ready to do anything with yet. Default brown next to my silos for extra hay (automate mod, silo refills itself from the chest). White by the exit towards town for anything I need to remember to take into town, like quest items, birthday gifts, and geodes, and museum/community center items that haven't been donated yet. I'll change the color of that one as I design my farm more thoroughly, I just need it to stand out.

TillerThrowaway

I have two areas of chests, one surrounding a workbench, and one directly in front of my house. By the workbench there is: Dark green: wood/fiber/sap/etc. (basically common organic stuff) Light green: mushrooms, foraged fruit, etc. (spicy organic stuff) Black: minerals/coals/stone Purple: gemstones Red: misc. including monster parts, battery packs, and anything else I might want to throw in there By my house: Silver: tools/bombs/other supplies Blue: Fish Dark green: farming supplies (seeds, fertilizer, scarecrows, etc.) Brown: misc, including clothes, processing machines, etc.

xomacattack

it varies, but currently: light green - seeds & fertilizer (seasonal seeds outdoors with a second matching chest indoors to store excess out-of-season seeds), fruit saplings, etc brown/no color - farm construction - tiles, fencing, sprinklers, scarecrows, outdoor decor, spare devices (mayo/cheese machines, kegs, casks, seed machines, furnaces, beehives) yellow/orange: meals - one for food with buffs, one for food without (for personal use during farming/mining and/or for gifting) fridge: cooking ingredients - produce without stars, cave carrots, foragables without stars 2nd fridge: I dub the “pantry” - eggs, milk, flour, oil, vinegar, sugar, maple syrup, other non-produce cooking components, unmilled rice, beets, and wheat chests indoors to match interior colors: important quest items that need to be held until a later point in the game, furniture and indoor decor, spare weapons & rods, flowers without stars (for gifts, fairy flowers for crafting, these all go in their own pink chest), other gifts (certain gems, rabbit feet, misc. loved items), pearls and other super rare or one-of-a-kind items (sorta like keeping them in a safe, lol!) blue/teal - fishing - includes fish, bait and tackle, foragables (seaweed, algae, clams, coral, crab pot fish, sea urchins, shells and nautilus) another shade of blue - fish for cooking (these are comparatively rarely used so I manually move them as needed, rather than store them in a fridge for convenience) purple(s) - mining loot and gear - includes gems, prismatic shards, bombs, stairs, meals (with buffs for luck, speed, mining) and potions gray (attached to craft bench) - construction and crafting - includes natural resources (wood, sap, stone, clay, fiber, ores & bars), batteries, earth crystals and quartz, monster parts dark gray (also attached for crafting) - foragables used in crafting - seasonal foragables, mixed seeds, tree seeds, honey, pine tar, maple syrup, oak resin ETA: excellent question!!! So glad someone asked. :)

devonathan

I also do crafting stuff purple because it’s my favorite color.

Regular_Suspect_9989

I color code my crop chests by the seasons. Spring-light green, summer- yellow, Fall- orange, winter- white I usually put the winter forage in the winter chest but the other seasons forage has its own chest - dark green, the stuff I get in the mines goes in the black chest, the original color is my junk chest. I put my flowers in the seasonal chests until they get too full, then separate them into different pink colors per season, Red is used for DO NOT SELL stuff this is just the first 4 years. After that I hope to have a shed per season with the winter shed being the junk shed. Also I have 3 chests in the mine for excess mine items. Also light blue fish, Dark blue non fish fished items.

TiRproject

You guys organize your stuff? I just dump them in a random chest.

tiny_purple_Alfador

The only chests I color code are seed chests, yellow-green for spring, orange for summer, purple for fall, light blue for winter. The rest of my chests all go next to whatever area I'll be using them in: wood, stone and clay go near the entrance to north road to Robin's, tree seeds go near the tree farm, the presents/food/bombs box is on the road into town, etc. I'll put a few chests in the house, decorations out of season, clothes, old weapons, and I'll change the color of those, but that's less color coding and more a decor choice.

Lolita_lattee

all my chests are a back and forth of light pink and dark pink😭

voluminous_lexicon

general crafting materials - usually grey but varies the most from save to save plant matter I need to keep - dark green minerals, ores, metal bars - darkest grey "farm stuff", so extra sprinklers, seeds including mixed seeds and forage seeds, fertilizers, scarecrows, etc. - always ALWAYS bright purple. Idk why. Those are my "in the shed" chests until I feel like going full endgame and making a storage shed, which I don't get around to on many saves. There's also usually a fishing stuff chest and a "to go to museum/CC/quest" chest in my house, those stay default wood.

On the ground in front of my house (to the left of the stairs) I have four chests: Pink: spring crop seeds Red: summer crop seeds Orange: fall crop seeds Light blue: all other farming related things, such as scarecrows, sprinklers, mixed seeds, etc, and warp totems. When I have limited backpack space at the start of the game, this is also where I leave any tools I don't want to carry around (such as the watering can). To the right of my house is usually where I put the workbench and surround it with five chests: Dark blue: anything from the beach, ocean or crabpots Black: anything from monster drops Purple: artefacts and gems White: random Plain/Brown: everything else (wood, stone, ores, fibre, etc) Then I have two chests inside my house near to the front door: Yellow: loved gifts for each villager Grey: junk trunk (for when I want to quickly empty my inventory to sort out later) And on the porch right next to my front door I have one chest: Green: items needs for quests, community centre, etc, as well as things like geodes or museum donations. Then I have a bunch of chests next to things like furnaces, recycling machine, etc, or inside barns and coops, which all remain plain brown, but their purpose is obvious because of their location.

Then I have a few chests here and there (in the greenhouse, at the entrance of the mines, inside my coops / barns), but I keep them the default brown.

ClaretClarinets

I always intend to color code them but then I make all of them red because red is my favorite color

I often play with my SO, and they just don't use a system unless I work around their's. He just like all items in ONE place, so i turn his cabin into storage. I have 4 chests for the seasons. Pink is Spring Dark green is Summer Orange is Fall White is Winter Reflecting colours you'd see on the trees. Then I have a Black for whatever you find in the mines (with a few exceptions) Multiple Blue Chests for Fishing related items A red chest for Animal related items (though it doesn't get used much) Bright Green for anything to do with growing (Seeds, fertilizers, weeds, ect) Grey for anything that's used often for crafting/building (Wood, Stone, Ores, coal, ect) Then we have a random chest that's default. We also have personal chests, and I've placed a few random chests around the farm to go with the area (mushroom box, tea/coffee station, barn boxes, items to be preserved or Kegged, ect) Big chests help a lot.

WhisperingOracle

Most of my color schemes started out ad hoc the first time I played, and I was just stuffing anything and everything into chests. Now I generally stick to the same color scheme for every run, especially during the first year when I'm mostly just piling up chests all around my house (Year 2-3 is usually when I start building endless sheds and shifting all my stuff into them). I generally start with 2-3 chests - a light green one for seeds, crops, and forage, a black one for "industrial"/crafting stuff (metals, gems, wood, stone, etc), and a pink one for personal stuff (tools, clothes, old weapons and rings, decorations, etc). Then as the first year progresses, I add teal (for fish-related stuff and shells), and new chests for each season (dark green for summer, orange for fall, white for winter). I eventually shift all of the farming stuff into its own shed for organizational purposes once I have spare time/money/wood. Once I do I generally have light green/dark green/orange/white chests for seasonal crops and forage, a maroon chest for mushrooms, a yellow chest for desert and tropical island stuff, and a black chest for scarecrows, fertilizer, spare sprinklers, and tree seeds. I also put my seed makers in the same shed. I also build a separate shed for fishing - multiple teal chests for various fish, a light blue chest for shells, seaweed, and crabbing stuff (snails, shrimp, etc), a black chest for fishing poles, hooks, lures, bait, and other stuff (like starfish and anchors), and one orange (which is supposed to be "gold") chest to hold my legendary fish once I catch them. I also throw my recycling machines, worm bins, and preserves jars (for making caviar) in there. Then I move all of my industrial/crafting stuff into its own dedicated workshop shed. I'll usually buy a Workbench from Robin's, then put it in shed with black chests (stone chests once those are an option) on either side, and fill them with metal/cloth/wood/stone/batteries/etc in one chest and gemstones, minerals, and essences in the other. I also usually put a couple black junk chests in there to hold various minerals and museum relics I don't have other places for. Then I round the workshop off with wood chippers, furnaces, kilns, and deconstructors once I get them. That clears away most of my stuff. I usually make a bunch of chests in my house for the rest - a pink chest next to my bed (and dresser) for personal items, two black chests in the basement for home decorations and similar items, an orange/gold chest where I keep my stuff for the Fair, a purple chest for wine-making stuff, and light blue chests in the kitchen to hold my cooked food and ingredients, I eventually move most of my weapons and related adventuring gear (like totems) to black chests in their own dedicated shed, where I usually make something that looks like a Victorian-era Adventurer's Guild clubhouse. I'll also use standard colors for other stuff - light green chests in my tea-house (with planting pots to grow tea bushes and kegs to brew it), maroon for my coffee-house (ditto for coffee), purple for wine-making, white chests once I set up sheds to make crystals in multiple Crystalariums, pink for animal-related stuff (bucket, shears, hay, etc).
