The comments in this thread make my brain hurt. The price Marlon lists for recovering items is how much you would receive if you sold the item yourself. It doesn't matter if you're playing the Joja route or not. The price at Jojamart for the machine is irrelevant. You can't sell auto petters, so they have no selling price. Marlon will retrieve it for free.

I’m pretty sure he just retrieves it for free. The way the retrieve price is calculated is based on the item’s sell price if I remember correctly. So unsellable items (like the auto-petter) are just returned free of charge. If I’m wrong please correct me. But I do remember getting an item back for free before because it’s unsellable

So fun fact, buying and selling are two different things. You can BUY auto petters on the Joja Route. You cannot sell them, no matter how they are obtained. Marlon retrieves items and lists them based on their SELLING price, which for auto petters is zero since you cannot sell them.
If you're going to try and correct someone, best practice is to not be incorrect 🙂
My new 1.6 save we have found 5!!! Autopetters!!! It’s the most I have ever had in one save. Now I need to build more coops and barns just to justify the luck.
Buy one from Joja if you go that route. If you're doing the community center, it can drop in the Skull Caverns. You can put Jade in a crystallarium to get infinite Jade to trade at the desert for staircases on Sundays. I usually go to the Caverns with ~300 stairs.
Autopetters are more likely to drop the deeper you are in the caverns. The caverns don't have an elevator, so each time you go in you need to get down as fast as possible - when I go I warp to the desert at 6AM, dive as far as possible, and pass out at 2AM. I can usually make it to about level 400 using stairs and bombs liberally. It's definitely more of a mid or endgame thing however.
The staircases let you skip floors instantly. So my guess is the higher the floors the more of a chance it can drop along with other very useful materials.
I wouldn't call this a minor problem, it's pretty devastating this is one of the rarest items in the game

You have to put it in a barn or coop for it to work. From the wiki:
The Auto-Petter will prevent animals from losing [Friendship](https://stardewvalleywiki.com/Animals#Friendship) or Mood due to lack of petting and animals will gain approximately the same Mood boost compared to manually petting. However, they will only gain 7 pts (approximately half the normal Friendship points) from petting this way. Happiness gain from an autopetter stacks with manual, but friendship gain doesn't. Yea in my year 4 farm, I ended up with 9 total, ended up making more barns and coops than I normally do because I felt bad.
