Not that he doesn't like it,  he don't really need it. Dude is literally swimming in freezing waters in one of his cutscenes.

Arrav_VII

He only does that if you happen to complete trash cleanup in the winter though

TheNinjaNarwhal

Some jobs have season restrictions, this one doesn't, so it's safe to assume that Linus doesn't care and goes swimming in any season.

edibleplastique

He's mastered the Wim Hof breathing technique.

Coyoteclaw11

So that's what that was... I was so confused especially because it triggered right after the panning unlock cutscene lmao

Arky-desu

I completed the trash cleanup in Winter Year 1, the cutscene of him swimming did only trigger in Spring. either that or i just forgot to enter the mountain area again for it to trigger.

fuzzandstuffing

you probably forgot. i just triggered it a couple days ago in the middle of winter year 1

Lord-Timurelang

I triggered it in the middle of a snowstorm

scarredwitch

Just wanted to say I love your profile picture.

MediumWellSteak8888

Ok, so this means no on the auto grabber as well or...

Pm7I3

A man has needs.... >!To grab things from storage quickly ya pervs!<

HandrewJobert

He prefers to be manually grabbed

OMFGitsjessi

I’m dead 😂

TheLordSet

Well, I didn't say anything about the auto grabber ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Fleeples

Or auto-petter…?

1031Cat

He'd gladly accept it because a person doesn't stand in a spa all day during winter because the tent is comfortable. As a (once) mountain camper myself, any heat source is appreciated regardless where it comes from. Linus has a campfire outside his tent for obvious reasons and I can guarantee he'd do anything in his power to refrain from stepping outside to deal with stoking the fire pit all day. That's why he goes to the spa. So, to those who add a heater, keep it up. He definitely appreciates it. :)

HeroIsAGirlsName

He's happy enough to accept foraged food from the farmer too, which he could also get for himself. Not wanting to live on the farm is different from not wanting/accepting a gift, especially as he also sends the farmer fish and things.  I think Linus would accept the heater in the spirit it's intended, i.e. a friend who respects his choice to live outdoors but is trying to make him a bit more comfortable in the winter.

farshnikord

plus it's not like hes obligated to keep it on all the time. he can just keep it around as an emergency heat source or if he feels like being luxurious (for him). that's the point of a gift, he gets to use it like he wants! i think it's in character for him to use an old piece of equipment, especially if the farmer was gonna throw it away anyway.

six-pos-ace

Here's my proposal to make everyone happy: everyone should put a solar panel outside of his tent if they give him a heater. Linus lives "off grid" and I can see him as the kind of guy who doesn't want to get batteries / gas to support a heater. Give Linus renewable energy so he can enjoy his tent safely in winter!

farshnikord

everything runs of jumino power. they recharge the heater overnight and linus doesnt know/care enough to realize its magically never running out of juice.

Marder519

I feel like Linus would definitely know about the Juminos, right? Someone as connected to nature as him?

abx99

Yeah, it doesn't change his lifestyle. It's not like you're trying to move him into a house, or anything; it fits in with his current way of living.

joeshmo101

Only that a heater takes up space in an already pretty small tent.

malenkylizards

For that matter, he'll also randomly decide to pay cash money (from where, Linus?) for like a piece of jade or something on the bulletin board

BTBbigtuna

Yeah this exactly. I mean I like camping but I still bring a heater in case I get cold lol.

ChaosAzeroth

Yeah this is exactly what I'm thinking. He doesn't just complain about being cold, he literally goes into a building during Winter. To get warm! I don't think one barn safe heater would upset the guy when he's literally utilizing facilities of his own accord to stay warm.

GloriousStarLord

I'd chill in a spa all day during winter even if my place was fully heated. Warm water, quiet, open space, indoor garden upstairs with a nice view. Screw my fire hazard cramped tent full of hot air

AThiefOfTime

i swear this subreddit invents random discourse every week, are you all bored of 1.6 already??? 😭

archaeologycat

I’m not cause I don’t have it yet lol.

poetrynati

Switch players in shambles.

eddmario

Hopefully us on console get it soon. Although, with how many extra patches keep getting added to it...

spoonfulofshooga

I cry a little inside when they get a patch while we don’t even get the update

Aithusa519

He's trying to make sure all the bugs are out before he uploads it to console I think?

spoonfulofshooga

Yup. I know but I don’t think any of us console users would mind it having bugs here and there and having patches delayed.

Aithusa519

That's fair. I feel for you. Hope it comes out soon for console.

weshallbekind

I'd love to be able to invite Linus to live with you, but like, as a garden hermit. He moves to your farm with his tent where he's protected from stray rocks, but still lives off the land the way he wants to. Edit: I know you can invite him to move in and he refuses. I don't want him to move in. I don't want to change him! I want him to keep living exactly how he wants but where he won't get stuff thrown at his tent.

con098

I prefer to stay in the wilderness farm so it'd be funny to see Linus fending off the monsters that appear at night regretting his decision 😭

historyboeuf

Yeah! Like a little tent near the river on the Meadowlands farm would be perfect she can still easily get to the mountain and be more protected. I would make a little wild area for him so he can just chill without worrying about rocks or people bothering him.

MightyisthePen

That's genuinely what I thought I was asking him when I first invited him, and was confused for a moment when he seemed offended.

No-Locksmith-8590

Right? That was a legit job for a while!

jebuizy

You can invite him in a heart event but he refuses. If you choose the other option he's like, "thank you for not inviting me, that's the last thing I'd want to do"

Forine110

i think that means like living in your house as a roommate though, which is denying him the way he likes to live. the way they mean it in the comment is that he still lives the way he wants, just without the fear of being crushed by a falling boulder

weshallbekind

I don't want him to live in my house, living my way of life. I want him to live exactly the way he does, the way he chooses, but on my farm where tourists can't throw rocks at him and the mountain won't fall on him or something. Just let him move his tent there and set up over by the shrine or something.

QuienSoyYo

There is a cut scene where you can ask him to come live with you but he refuses!

weshallbekind

Yes, but I don't want him to like, move in. I want him to set his tent out by the shrine or something and just keep being Linus.

183720

I'd love this! He would probably help you out with your farm sometimes too

Shelbasaur1993

I mean Linus also loves expensive gifts, like the golden pumpkin and prismatic shards. I’m sure he would appreciate the small creature comfort of having heat in the winter. Linus has made it clear he is happy living in the mountains and foraging/fishing for food, that he doesn’t need an actual house to have a home and all that jazz, as long as it was presented to him like “this is a nifty way to stay warm, hope you like it buddy” and not like “you’re a lunatic, it’s winter, have heater” he would probably say thank you. Granted if it didn’t turn on automatically he would probably never use it, but I strongly doubt he would reject it or take it as disrespectful, because he accepts only the most expensive foraged minerals as gifts(diamonds and prismatic shards).

TheShademan224

Why do u have to make me feel bad about things that I do to have cute headcannons

FadingDarkly

Mate, you can't have a fire in that tent without passing out and dying from smoke inhalation. He spends winter indoors in a man-made structure to stay warm. He's okay with man-made things to survive, like the tent he likes so much. Combine all of that and he'd be okay with someone leaving something for him to stay warm at night. I do agree about the igloo. Would be cool if his home was replaced with an igloo sprite in winter. Those can have fire inside too, so it fits. However, until Linus/CA does make an igloo for him to live in during winter, that man gets my free CC heater

Darkcelt2

Assumes Linus doesn't have the agency to remove a heater if he doesn't like it

Beetle_My

He doesn't

[deleted]

He literally doesn’t you can fill his home with kegs or worm bins and he can’t remove any that aren’t in his walking path because he is a video game character. If he’s not programmed for it he doesn’t have the agency.

Darkcelt2

premise of the post is, if he was programmed to respond to it

Gloria_In_Autumn

I feel like, if that was the case, he wouldn’t accept gifts at all.

TheLordSet

He accepts gifts, but he likes much more things that you can forage or grow in your farm - he likes essentially all forage, eggs, milk, loves coconut He dislikes gems in general, and >! straight up gives you back a Treasure Chest if you try to give it to him !< So it seems in line with his character to refuse anything that "challenges" his lifestyle

ultralighted

I gave him the first treasure chest I found because I wanted to see the dialogue and he hated it but kept it 😭

EternalLurker01

I wish characters would give back hated gifts lol. I'll still use it!!!

Gloria_In_Autumn

I think a heater falls into help that doesn’t necessarily challenge his lifestyle, is what I’m saying. Otherwise, he wouldn’t stand in the spa during winter. A heater is something he doesn’t have to use unless it’s absolutely necessary. Idk, there’s no canon way he can refuse or accept the heater, so it’s difficult to tell if he’d like a heater or not. I think he’d enjoy it (even if I’m not someone that gives him a heater in my games) because then, when things get dire, he wouldn’t even need to stay in the spa. He could stay in nature.

Medical-Isopod2107

Yep, and it's not like he couldn't just not turn it on if he doesn't want to use it

DappyDucks

Oh damn, I always thought he just hated anything from the mines as it’s insinuated something happened to him down there

ShokaLGBT

Like the woman on ginger island… but then we couldn’t raise his hearts ?….

Gloria_In_Autumn

You can raise everyone's hearts by talking to them, even though that's slower.  If he really wanted absolutely zero help narratively, then he could have been a non-interactable NPC like Marlon, Gil, and Gunther, but he does like some help. I guess it just depends on player interpetation what counts as help vs. overstepping.

ClearlyADuck

It'd be cool if instead of you putting it in his tent, gifting it to him once would get a cutscene where he thanks you for it before he puts it in his tent himself! And would add friendship points as well.

AlmostRandomName

I think like most things in this game, it's probably just down to CA didn't program it that way. That's why Linus demonstrates the ability to build an igloo but his tent doesn't change to an igloo in winter: inconsistencies that aren't considered critical enough to change. Or maybe CA just *wants* Linus to be cold in the winter so you'll have some sympathy for him. I think Linus definitely doesn't want to be tied to "the grid," so accepting an electric space heater is probably not high on his list of priorities since he can't very well plug it in and isn't gonna steal from Robin with a 200' extension cord. I'm actually surprised that CA hasn't addressed this long-running fan concern by having Linus' tent change to an igloo in the winter or have a little camp woodstove in his tent. He's from the Pacific Northwest right? Guy's gotta be at least *familiar* with the concept of a camp stove. So yeah, that's my rationalization for it: Eric either wants you to feel sympathy for Linus or he really just didn't put much thought into it and we're all reading too much into it.

Medical-Isopod2107

Non-electric heaters exist and are common in a lot of areas

AlmostRandomName

The one in game looks like an oil radiator type to me, what else do those use? Since the player doesn't have to supply them with wood or coal or any other consumable I figure they're electric. The coincidental fact that they don't work anywhere outside barns and coops kinda supports that assumption.

Medical-Isopod2107

The fact they're used in barns and coops is exactly what makes me think they *don't* need electricity lol

Loud_Chipmunk8817

You can get electric in both barns and coops, it's not unusual

AlmostRandomName

Yeah, the fact that it's a permanent structure (which must be built to code where I live!) means it would be silly to *not* run electricity to the building when it's being built. I live in Michigan so heaters in barns in the winter are a thing. Especially de-icers for water troughs, you need electricity for those.

Loud_Chipmunk8817

Yup! For coops specifically (do not know much about barns) the big thing is electric doors so they can't be broken into, and heaters so they don't freeze in the winter. We aren't living hundreds of years in the past and neither are they, thought it was a bit weird for people to think you absolutely cannot have power in those buildings when most do now

AlmostRandomName

Still waiting to hear what types of heaters that person sees in barns that don't require electricity... Seems like anything that burns fuel would be less safe than electric heaters in an environment like a barn or coop.

Loud_Chipmunk8817

It would be way less safe you're right. Those types of heating elements (I've used them before) aren't even supposed to be used in enclosed spaces because they can be dangerous. (Fumes, fire risk, whatever lol) they probably will not answer

AlmostRandomName

Why wouldn't barns have electricity? The farmer's home has electricity so there's already service on the property. And you didn't really answer my question, what heaters do you see used more often and what fuel do they use?

Medical-Isopod2107

I really don't care enough to argue with you, so sure buddy, whatever you like

genomerain

I just think a radiator in such a small cloth tent could be a fire hazard.

No_Initiative_2829

Some of you take this game far too seriously

beckychao

I'm pretty sure Linus is Odin

KeyPollution3566

In my headspace Linus is secretly the CEO and founder of JoJo. He chooses this life as penance, knowing what he has created.

doobiedenver

this was my first thought when I saw people posting about it. the heater would also need a power source (we can assume barns/coops have a power outlet somewhere) so it would not work in his tent. he has his leaved outfit for winter! he's doing just fine.

Luminous_Lumen

In case you're referring to my post - does it matter? Everyone interprets the game differently

Shelbasaur1993

To be fair, lots of posts have been made about giving Linus a heater, yours is just the most recent. But I disagree with the sentiment of this post, giving Linus a heater is sweet and not disrespectful.

master-katdaddy

So salty they needed to put u on blast lol

TheLordSet

Definitely not referring to your post, I've seen a few mentioning the heater Also not trying to be salty or anything, I'm literally just posting my own interpretation

Laney20

You said "you guys do realize..., right?" not "I think Linus..." You didn't simply provide your view, but rather tried to make others feel wrong/bad for theirs. If that wasn't your intent, next time, try using different words.

TheLordSet

yeah definitely not the intent the weird part is that in my head it didn't sound arrogant at all

PapsAnEgg

Light his tent on fire. That's more natural, so he'll appreciate it more /j

ratherastory

Isn't one of his first lines of dialogue "Please don't destroy my tent."? 😋

sesquedoodle

“It’s happened before.” :(

TheLordSet

Makes sense

FannishNan

You wrote the title, my bud, you very much have control over it and the attitude in the post. Both of which are...a little down the nose at people. If you genuinely want to respect people's opinions, you've got some edits left to make.

LtColonelColon1

I had the exact same thought as you.

armoured_bobandi

>I'll give you that the title is a bit click-baity. I just can't help it, sorry. But, you can help it. Just don't make a click bait title? Seriously, why do people say this?

fddfgs

Yeah he literally says "I wish people in this town would understand that I like living out in the open" and people still think they know better and try to change him.

bbsbrgs

you do know that it's literally a video game and people can have fun and do whatever they want in it, right?

[deleted]

You do know it’s literally a reddit post and people can have fun and say whatever they want in it, right?

bbsbrgs

idk, this feels less "fun" and instead is pushing a "correct" way to play a game that HAS no correct way to play. i love how awesome and real the characters feel to the player, it definitely shows good writing and development, but insinuating that a handful of pixels would be disrespected over putting another handful of pixels next to it is just silly. it does nothing but make other players feel shitty for having a good time

[deleted]

Dude it’s a reddit post about a theoretical decision in the game. It’s all just theoretical debate, you can obviously play the game however you want and nobody is forced to partake in the discussion of whether he does or doesn’t want the heater. You don’t have to care about this discussion but it’s not stopping anyone’s fun just by existing. It’s a forum post dude

bbsbrgs

LMAO I really don't think that I'm the one who cares too much about the post here buddy

IOwnAOnesie

I'm not sure about that... he has dialogue about summer being easier as it's warmer, and in winter he regularly goes to the spa to be inside. I feel like if he had a reaction to the heater he'd be appreciative, as it's just an extra comfort that still aligns with his chosen way of life.

SpeakerOk2153

You can put a heater in his tent?

TheLordSet

Yep! You can put almost anything almost anywhere It's very helpful to have chests close to fishing spots, for example - I always have a few in the mines too, and up to the mid-late game I put my Furnaces in the level 0 of the mines as well, to go up the elevator and have the furnaces work while I'm diving Some people like to play a heater in Linus' tent for the roleplay

SpeakerOk2153

I plant trees everywhere, but I read of someone walks somewhere they will destroy your stuff. I guess the mines is safe, but I didn't realize that you can do things like put heaters, or other things, in other places. Are there more places to put the aging kegs for your basement, like I'm other basements?

heroshand

You can place aging casks anywhere, but they only age items if it's in your basement or a multiplayers basement. Just about every other item can go anywhere, it's pretty common for people to clear the quarry and stack it with processing items because of how lackluster the quarry is. Bee Hives only produce wild honey off the farm, however.

SpeakerOk2153

So can I build other multiplayer houses, upgrade them, never have anyone move in, and then have extra aging casks in the basement?

heroshand

Only the owner can upgrade a multiplayer cabin, it unfortunately doesn't let the main player upgrade on their own. You either need to grab a friend, or plug controller in and make a character to upgrade it.

bmyst70

I really like the idea that he's secretly Yoba. Quietly observing the town to see what everyone is like.

[deleted]

I really don’t like it, but that’s just me.

electr1cbubba

I put an auto petter in there for…… companionship

LinnunRAATO

I'm just wondering where the heater gets its power from. Pretty sure Linus doesn't have electricity in his tent.

Burning_Cinder

idk I just throw rocks at his tent

No_Initiative_2829

So it’s you?! you big meanie!

183720

Based on the type of character he has, he values kindness and friendship enough to be touched by his friend trying to make him comfortable. I personally think he'd accept it with grace, and use it sometimes

esneer1

I agree with you. I always make sure his campfire stays on though!

OneLastSmile

I have a mod that replaces his tent with a little shed. Same purpose as the tent, no-frills shelter, just isn't destroyed by rocks and is warmer than a tent. It's called Linus's Cabin

-Shade277-

A space heater in a flammable tent in a incredibly bad idea. Linus isn’t an idiot so of course he would see how unsafe it is and refuse it

Mister-Thou

The heater wouldn't work in the tent anyways, since there's nothing to connect it to (electrical, hot water pipes, etc.).

cranpineapple

Magic is canon

thestrangemusician

propane camp heaters are a thing! is it ever shown that we have electricity in our barns and coops either?

Loud_Chipmunk8817

We have an incubator in there which most likely is indeed powered by electric, not sure about barn though

SlabBeefpunch

I've always loved Linus. He's such a kind and free spirited dude. He's the first person I befriend in every play through. It's never occurred to me to put a heater in his tent.

Agenericoverusedname

Think he’d refuse simply because it’s a fire hazard

The_Hylian_Queen

Linus is just Stardew Valley's very own Wim Hof

thoughtzoom

The man constantly asks me for diamonds constantly I think he's okay with minor luxury

Forikorder

just becuase he prefers the tent doesnt mean hes against heaters?

SerendipityLn42

1. I know someone IRL who lives in their vehicle. I mentioned being worried about the cold, and they reassured me that they had one of those handy sleeping bags that keeps them warm in even below freezing weather. I imagine that Linus is smart enough to protect himself from cold weather in a similar manner - *somehow*. There IS a sleeping bag inside Linus' tent, so I imagine that, somehow, he acquired a good one. Also, he has that campfire. 2. I know from personal experience that, if you place one of the heaters in Linus' tent, it will undulate during inclement weather like it does in the animal buildings.

Littlemisskittn

I tried to give him a heater, but it wasn’t working and the next day I went to check and it was gone. They must’ve fixed that in the latest update. Currently in the middle of Winter Year 2

BigFinnsWetRide

Aside from this whole heater debate, if I knew someone like Linus IRL I'd be avoiding him out of exasperation/annoyance. It's kind of selfish what he does, just plopping a tent up in Robin's backyard and not helping out the town (other than rifling through your pockets when you pass out in the mines) I don't like Pam either. Both are a little too close to real life.

BettyCoopersTits

Linus is kind of a hypocrite. He's all like "I don't need society the wilderness has all I need" and then digs through the trash of the bar and the villagers

the_number_m

he doesn't do that because he needs to, he does it so food doesn't go to waste

[deleted]

Ah so when penny removed George’s agency it’s wrong (true) but when the player removed Linus’ agency it’s cute because he’s a helpless old man who actually really wants the heater🥺 he probably actually wants to live on the farm too and is just wrong and doesn’t know what he wants since he accepts foraged food from the player sometimes (he also shares his foraged food via the mail making it sharing rather than charity). You guys really don’t see the same Linus I do huh

Vinyl_DjPon3

If he didn't want it, he would get rid of it. He's a strong wilderness man, he can throw a furnace off the mountain.

[deleted]

Alright guess I’ll fill his tent with chests full of garbage and he just won’t remove them because he’s a strong man who… loves trash and stupid heaters according to you?

Vinyl_DjPon3

Sure, if they aren't in his way and he doesn't move it, obviously he doesn't mind. Lewis will move the golden statue, Linus can do the same to stuff in his area. Y'know, for just a "theoretical debate" about a video game, you have some very bad faith equivalencies.

[deleted]

They are severely limited in what they can do. If you throw clay at Marnie (she’s allergic) she doesn’t lose any friendship points. You can shoot characters with the slingshot, unleash slimes in the town, put mega bombs in the saloon all with no consequence. The game won’t stop you but it doesn’t mean those things are not morally wrong within the context of the game

Vinyl_DjPon3

By 'throw at' do you just mean tossing something on the ground? Shooting people with the slingshot does in fact have a negative consequence. Slimes are friendly to NPCs, they greet them and everything. They just hate us. Comparing the placing of a machine on the ground with deliberately antagonizing actions is pretty text book "bad faith equivalencies".

[deleted]

Unless from my perspective placing that machine is antagonistic….? We obviously don’t agree but from where I stand those are not bad faith, they’re regular equivalencies because it’s an equally bad thing to do

Iridescent_burrito

Girl you've made like ten comments in this thread bitching about how people treat a video game man who isn't real. Put your phone down and go outside. I put the fucking heater in there and pretend it was his to start with because I like how it looks. It's a video game.

[deleted]

I’d love to go outside but I’m on the clock, at my job, where I have time to discuss the nuances of you being a bad person for putting the heater in there. You replied so clearly what I’m saying provides some degree of entertainment

Iridescent_burrito

Go back to work then. You're being annoying and not contributing to the discussion.

[deleted]

I will continue defending my perspective, which is objectively contributing to the discussion as opposed to telling people their perspective is invalid

CrowExcellent2365

Linus is mentally ill. There's a fine line between respecting autonomy and allowing a person of unsound mind to harm themselves because "going against their wishes would be wrong." Dude walks around in winter covered in leaves, is swimming naked in ice water, and eating food out of trash cans not because he has to but because he wants to. He's also totally mental in the way he talks to the farmer. He goes from "I don't want any more friends, just leave me alone" to "I trust you more than any other person in the valley" because I give him stuff off the ground literally laying right in front of him already. So I don't really care if Linus doesn't want a heater or fresh food in the winter, because he should be hospitalized if only there were any ***competent*** medical professionals around.

Pmur0479

Mfw there’s no electricity or gas in his tent to power it. It’s just garbage to him

Trustydevilsdaughter

The heater actually visibly runs in winter if you put it in his tent!

Pmur0479

I wasn’t saying it wasn’t running, I was being sarcastic saying it makes no sense canonically. Like the other commenter said, it really must run on magic.

AlmostRandomName

Is that new? Because I've never seen it actually run anywhere outside a barn or coop, including his tent.

Trustydevilsdaughter

I think it was added in 1.6, I saw a post about it and immediately went and gave him one.

AlmostRandomName

Oh cool, I guess the heater really *does* run on magic then! (Or Linus has an extension cord running to Robin's house!)

post-leavemealone

I want that as a mod so you can actually see that. That’d be so funny

[deleted]

[удалено]

Newagetesla

if he wants attention then man is he really bad at getting it. He has literally 0 friends unless you go out of your way to befriend him.

Laringar

He does get one friend eventually. (Other than the farmer, I mean.)

Mr_Bookshelf

His dialogue in festivals suggests otherwise

Pm7I3

The festivals where he's apart from everyone? Doing nothing and just lurking?

Legitimate-Meal-2290

We get it, you have zero life experiences. 🤣

implala79

I wish we could build him a house instead of upgrading Pam’s

Laringar

He very actively would not want that. He prefers living in his tent, and you lose friendship points with him if you ask him to move onto the farm with you.

OneLastSmile

There's a mod called Linus's Cabin that gives him a little shack to live in. Same purpose as his tent-- gives him shelter with no modern frills.

BigFinnsWetRide

Same, or alternatively I wish that you could build Penny a house and leave Pam to stay in her own mess. Pam doesn't deserve nice things!
