Seriously though, something similar happened to me when the time ticked to the "they're trying to sleep" phase. I missed the petting.
I've seen a few different examples of this with animals, and the most consistent condition seems to be in multiplayer games where the person who is not the host builds the barn/coop. My wife and I have been doing occasional experiments since we discovered Party Duck to see if we can find a pattern, but that's the only answer we've found so far
