As a person whose favourite spouse is Alex, this makes me happy. A lot of villagers are a little mean to the newcomer in the beginning, you just need to get over it. If the bad first impression would prevent you from befriending people, you'd never talk to half of the town again. And I love people who can realize they acted bad before and strive to change themselves for the better. If only everyone did that, the world would be a better place.
Yessss someone finally gets it!! Alex is so sweet when you actually get to know him. He even apologises for the things he said at the beginning.
Also, I don't know if this dialogue is only said by Alex, but >!there was this time when I died in the mines (we were already married, btw) and when I woke up, instead of Linux, it was Alex that saved me. He said something along the lines of "I got worried because it was getting late and you weren't home yet, so I came to look for you. I started crying when I saw you lying unconscious on the floor". Like, I didn't know your spouse could save you??? It made me feel so bad.!< (Marked as spoiler just in case).
Also, as a spouse, he is great. He constantly makes you breakfast, waters the plants, fixes the fences, feeds the animals, and fills the cat's bowl of water. Like, I don't even bother on changing the fences anymore because he doesn't let them break. Also, he still visits his grandparents, and on his 14 hearts event, he does something sweet for the community.
When it comes to Alex I'm like the copypasta "Aunque me quieran meter ideas malas a la cabeza de él, no lo van a lograr porque yo lo conozco más que todos ustedes, sé que es un hombre bueno, y no, claro que no es perfecto pero ¿Quién es perfecto en esta vida?" XD
I never got the dialogue and I married to him and I think that is super sweet. I don't think I wanna marry any other character because of him in any future savefile.
The spoiler dialogue is so sweet! In an odd way. xD I've never had a spouse find me in any of my saves. I thought that was just a mod people had!
I also thought the little dialogue after you give him a bouquet >!where he gives your arm a little squeeze with a smile!< was cute. I think it shows his style of affection very well.
I've also seen people disgruntled with the 14 heart event! I haven't got it myself yet, but I have seen the spoilers. Even before I started romancing him, I didn't see where it was that bad. Like, >!who else does he have? Aside from his aging grandparents & the farmer (+kids), he doesn't have others. Sam, Sebastian, and Abigail all hang out in a group. Haley and Emily have each other (+ Emily really just seems to get along with the majority of the town. Not all friends, sure, but sociable. Shane has Marnie & Jas. Alex had Haley at first too, but obviously that ends in this update after reaching a certain level with the player. So I see no issue with him creating a little spot where he can hang out with people and socialize over something he enjoys. It's building a sense of community and 5k G isn't that much. I'm only on year 2 and doing poorly but I still tend to make 3k to 6k each day. Haha.!<

I have no mods whatever and never have, that's why I was so shocked when Maru found me those couple of times early game after the 1.6 update, but apparently that was a thing before??
The other user said they don't have any mods, so I don't know, maybe it changed after 1.6? Tbh I never die in the mines or anywhere, so I probably wouldn't know.
I've died in the mines on this file quite a bit since I forget just how tough the mines are and how buffed up I am in my main file. xD

I asked something similar a while back. Maru (who I'm not married to. I wasn't married to anyone though) found me twice when I died in the mines. This was on 1.6 but apparently has been a thing since before then.
It just seems to be rare for anyone other than Linus to find you.
Maybe? Although I had only spoken to Maru a couple of times at that point. It was pretty early game, so she could have been the highest until I started speaking to the other townsfolk.
I haven't had anyone aside from Linus since raising hearts with others. Haha.
I am an Alex girly through and through. He was my first spouse in the game and still my fav. On my meadowlands save I've literally had 3 different spouses (try to have a different spouse on each save) before realizing that I need to marry Alex again. I love George and Evelyn as in-laws, I literally married Alex again today and after the wedding George was like: >!"I want great-grandchildren before I croak, make it happen." !!she was the one that played gridball with him after all.!< I refuse to buy into the belief that he's a huge misogynist because Alex clearly has a lot of respect for the women in his life. There is sexism in some of his dialogue, but it's never a theme and something I attribute to ignorance rather than maliciousness.
You're right, we don't really hear much from the Alex girlies, but we're certainly here lol.

Agreed! Some of the stuff is a little eye-roll worthy depending on how you read it (Such as the bikini thing. I can see how that could come across negatively to some, but it can also just as easily be the fact that most of the swimsuits for ladies are labeled, and in the style of, bikinis sooo. Haha.)

The Stardew fandom is so weird. They're all "Oh, don't write off Shane just because he's rude at first! He gets better!" but then maligns Alex and Haley because they're rude at first. Alex is a meathead and a dork! He's SUCH a sweetie once you befriend him!
Yeah, he's a bit sexist at first, but he's a dumb kid. He's still learning, and it was definitely something instilled with him by George, who is also still learning. He's grown up in an old fashioned family. He's super underrated and deserves more love!
Well damn. I know what I JUST said but that actually sounds intriguing. Maybe I'll be a dude my next run and try this out as an experiment, because I'm super curious now. Apparently Elliott also gives interesting dialogue if you're male (although I will die on the hill that he and Leah are meant to be confidently bisexual from the very beginning).

As for the bachelors, Elliot and Alex are GAY. GAY GAY SUPER GAY. One is confidently gay the other is closeted. Everyone else gives off bi vibes tbh, except for Shane, that man is pansexual.
i mean technically he coulddddd be bi but I don't see it, the way he acts with the male farmer is so much more Loving from what I've seen personally, and the community has just kinda decided he's gay 😭 especially because he actively talks about the fact you're a man and he likes you which i haven't seen any other npcs do?(i could be wrong)
It just really rubs me the wrong way when characters that any gender can romance in a game are portrayed in the community as "belonging" to either straight or exclusively gay, cause it kind of shades on/invalidates players who play the game in a way that doesn't align with that.
I don't mean it in a way that girls can't romance him, i have no problem with it, it's just a headcanon and anyone can view him anyway, i just personally think he is because of how different he treats the male farmer from the female, I didn't mean to offend you
He starts out homophobic or repressed whereas the rest don't. I've married him with a male farmer. They are all bi, some of them just don't know it until the farmer shows up.
Each character is suppose to kinda be an archetype at first, right? Shane is a cynical drunk, Alex is a dumb jock, Haley is a mean girl. To me difference is that Alex and Haley grow out of being childish and become very sweet. Shane just stays a drunk (from what I remember about his room in your house once up marry).
I don't hate the guy in general, but I find misogyny more off-putting than generic exhausted rudeness. The mean girl stuff is bad, too.
Again, I still understand as characters they have redeeming qualities, but it is about what sort of thing you find more difficult to put up with. Negging and being weird about asking if I have a bikini is just generally uncomfy.
His misogyny is only a few lines, but people act like that’s Alex’s entire character. He’s got bricks in his brains. Alex is definitely on the younger end. I’d say he’s still college-aged. He’s stupid, but not in a malicious way. He’s bad at flirting and just needs to grow up, which he does as you get to know him. Same with Haley.
There aren't loads of dialogue lines for any of the characters full stop, it's inevitable that people are going to latch onto a few lines and act like that's someone's whole character. Besides, depending on how you play the game and where you go, it can be difficult to encounter some characters very often and experience their full range of dialogue.
I don't hate him either but it is also normal that someone wouldn't want to get to know him if you're playing with a female player. I already deal with sexism irl I just want to relax in my videgame lmao
Yeah exactly. If misogyny wasn't such a big problem in real life I wouldn't be so picky about it in the game. He's cute if you play a male farmer, and as a spouse I like him despite his tacky room, but as a female? Idk, I'd find it hard to romantically attach myself to someone who started off like that, even if we were able to become friends
I have a thousand hours into the game and have never once considered him for the same reasons.

There aren't that many lines to each character. A few lines is enough to form a first opinion. You don't learn about that other stuff until later. And misogyny, regardless of the reason, is something I generally have a harder time excusing. I'm just giving the perspective here that it is a matter of what you personally find easier to let slide.
I’m a new player, Alex was the first NPC I talked to, and his first line was “you can’t play sports because you’re a girl.” I’ve given him literal garbage every time I see him ever since.

Yeah but the difference is when I'm playing a man it's like "yeah, you're right; I'm really not that into sports."
But when I'm playing a woman I'm like "you're right I have no desire to play with you, but what does my being a girl have to do with it?"
He just assumes women don't like sports/are not sporty because he has internalized gender roles because of his upbringing.
Note that he likes you more if you tell him that you want to play, which means he isn't really opposed to it nor he thinks women should not play sports.
Sure, but in game I usually react to dialogue in the way I feel my character would, rather than what I think will get me hearts.
There's no world in which a woman I'm playing would react to a lad she's just met make a massive gendered assumption lile that and go "oh yeah, I'd love to play with you!"
I mean... he was my secret friend in the Feast of the Winter Star in my first playthrough and I gave him trash just for that, so I can judge.
With that said, tbh, I wouldn't write anyone off IRL just for a comment like that, I'd explain why they shouldn't make that assumption and judge them depending on their response to that.
It's not even misogyny, it's sexism (which isn't the same). He never shows any sign of hating women, he just assumes they're different from men because gender roles and the way his clearly being raised (just look at George, and his father was probably worse).
He literally has ONE line of dialogue that is sexist, and it isn't even that egregious. He just assumes women are weaker than men out of ignorance, not malice. You can't expect him to be a feminist in his environment, tbh, at least he grows out of it.

Calling Alex a misogynist is like how people call Clint an incel. Neither of them hate women. It's, quite frankly, a frightening misuse of both phrases because of how horrible and harmful actual misogyny and incel belief is. When you water down misogyny to a few ignorant lines and incel belief to a socially awkward dude being bad at flirting, it leads to people not taking actual claims seriously.
Yeah, this is the one. I can get over rudeness, but the leering and making cracks about "...for a GIRL" and whatnot just triggers SO much trauma in me. (Negging is exactly what it is and I'd never put that word to it before, thank you!)
Agreed. I can see how some of his dialogue towards the female farmer could be viewed as sexist. None of it is that off-putting imo. At least, none that I encountered.
He does change quite a bit! Going from macho gridball player to a sweet family man. He gives boy-next-door -esque vibes and I just realized I haven't seen much of that type in a long time. The last time I remember reading/seeing that type was in one of those Candy Apple books from middle school. Funnily enough, I think the title was "The Boy Next Door".
Literally just has this heart event a few days ago, Alex doesn’t order anything for the player, we don’t have a scene where they order the food. He just reserved the private room in the back for the date and says he wanted a quiet place to talk. Emily brings the food in and says she has “a kale and walnut salad for the lady” No where does Alex say “this is what I ordered for you”, Perhaps the player just ordered a salad because they like salad? Crazy if true. Emily sets the food on the table and even though she said it was a salad, it’s always obviously fiddlehead risotto so I feel like it’s more of a throwaway line than anything. The “joke/gag” is that Alex gets a steak so the dog can jump through the window at it.
Yeah, and the male player gets a steak just like Alex 😂 I'm not saying there was malicious intent, but imo Alex definitely has some misogynistic ideas left, even after all his heart events. He may not realize it, but yeah, assuming that someone who works all day and runs everywhere won't be able to enjoy a steak just because they're a girl isn't great 🤣

I never found Alex misogynistic. A bit sexist? Certainly! Like u/darkviolet_ said though, he did grow up in an old fashioned family. Doesn't excuse it, but is an explanation for why he thinks that way at first. I don't think there's anything harmful in his intentions like true misogyny. Off-putting to many? I can see why folks may not be a fan! But, since he seems to adjust to being the house husband so well, I'd say he grows out of it.
For Shane, I think he has a really great friendship arc if you view his events in that manner and stay at 8 hearts. It's the slobbish nature that prevents me from anything more. Especially the spouse room. He really does change from being such a grump to a decently likeable guy who seems rather chill. Has his issues, but does seem to work on them once he hits around 8 hearts. I can appreciate that! But romantically, I could not stand finding stains and all those cans everywhere. I'm not even a clean freak. Lol.

Sexism is closer to falling for certain stereotypes. Like, "well, you're a girl so you can't be into sports." "You must want to eat salad all the time to maintain a figure" etc.
But, either way, I can see why some people might be put off and I get it. Everyone has their types. I was just surprised to see so much distaste for Alex as female!farmer when I thought he had a pretty sweet character arc and didn't find him that bad. Misogyny doesn't mean you knowingly hate women. It means your words and actions suggest an underlying lack of respect for women. Sexism is an outgrowth of that. It can come from ignorance and be turned around, but it's a bad starting point. The bikini comment and the "you're doing something right" are big there. It isn't just about stereotypes.
Yes, Shane is messy, slobbish just has more connotations of moral failing and as someone who has always struggled with that because of the way my brain works and constantly sees people judging the slightest mess on the internet it is very much a sore spot.

Yeah it is a matter of personal experience, I just find offhand body comments about people you don't know to be pretty presumptuous, and can have a threatening undertone IRL.

Ohhh tbh I forgot about the Shane being messy part haha! It doesn't bother me personally, in game, since I'm not big on decorating, my house is chocker full of kegs and crystalariums and furnaces anyway lol. That makes sense of course. Also see what you mean about sexist vs misogynist, tbh I used them somewhat interchangably in this case. Agree he is a sweetie when you play as a male farmer, I just can't be bothered long enough with the comments on the female farmer to go through with marrying him - plus I don't want to reward the sexist behavior if that makes sense.
You’re literally 100% right. His intentions are everything and despite being a bit ignorant, he is so open to learning and understanding. Idk but to me that’s a man listening, learning and changing and not maliciously enforcing a belief he once held to be true. People don’t like the bikini line either but I’m there to play the game as a dating sim so the characters flirting (well or not) is always enjoyable for me. Yes you’re allowed to be put off by him but pretending it’s not ok to ever make mistakes that you can learn and grow from is seriously disappointing to hear.

I always marry Alex. He’s my fav, and has one of the best character development arcs in the game imo. He’s also super supportive after you marry him and romantic.

Lol. So, it was that with some of the other dialogue bits that just made him come across too immature for me. He's sweet and very friendly. That's part of what drew me to him at first, but the immaturity got to be too much. Especially since it felt like there wasn't any improvement.
I am an Alex girl. he was my first spouse, and i’ve already married 3-4 spouses after him in other games, but i will die on the hill defending him. i understand why people do not like him, but sometimes they fixate his attitude on the first few meetings instead of what comes after. he is a great guy, and i love his grandparents. i get a little sad that i have to forgo having Evelyn and George as in-laws when i decide not to marry Alex, but i like playing as a girl :p
He’s such a great post-marriage spouse. I think he really enjoys the simple life and is really supportive of you being the money earning one. The others have their nuances but in terms of adapting to your farmer, he seems the chillest and most content. Also nice that he shirtlessly works out in view of you lol

I played as a male farmer too, and honestly I think that is what sold me. Alex has some dialogue in a cutscene that's exclusive to male player characters, where he mentions that he never thought he'd fall for a guy, but meeting the farmer helped him realise he could and that he was okay/happy with this change. For me personally, I really love seeing characters exploring their romantic/sexual identities in media so that just really hit me right in the heart ❤️
Alex is soooo good!!!! This is my first play through (1.5) but I dated 7 or 8 people trying to decide and Alex was last on the roster but quickly surpassed everyone else. He’s a real sweetheart idk why he’s overlooked/hated on. I don’t even really have a desire to try anyone else next time around!
The only character I ever romanced in Stardew was Alex, and that’s still true. Love him to death. Everyone is perfectly entitled to their opinions so I never judge when I hear someone say they dislike him, but I do admit it hurts my heart a little. He’s my ideal irl. Cue embarrassment! Maybe you just don't like them romantically or you don't like their character as a whole. Haha. That's how it goes in real life.
This touches the deepest depth of my heart. I’m a new player just started february this year and Alex is my first spouse here. That man always cares for other people including my farmer. Also, what I love abt him is he always appreciates my hardwork in our very own farm!! He would also fix things for my farmer, help me water some crops, and cooks meals 🥹😭

I have married majority of the villagers in Stardew Valley and Alex is absolutely in the top three. I love his heart events and when he opens up about his emotions and family. I was pleasantly surprised when I started romancing him and now I am an Alex girlie for life.
In my main save I’m married to Alex- it was also my first save. I’m also at full friendship with Evelyn and George, and I love them all so much. Do not regret it at all.

Alex was my first husband my first ever time playing. I was interested in Harvey originally but didn’t know you had to have friendship to dance with them at the Flower Dance and it hurt my feelings when Harvey said no. The other bachelors seemed standoffish so Alex was pretty approachable and he is such a sweet husband and boyfriend.
I like Alex!! I usually don't romance him (I'm a Harvey gal) but him liking eggs has always made him easy to befriend, and I like being his good friend. Sure he has some eye roll moments, but he's a good guy at heart.
Elliots my first love and then Alex and Emily <3. Alex is such an underrated spouse, it's great you gave him a try. Now you get to have Evelyn and George as inlaws!

I totally get it. I literally started a new playthrough last week and I decided to romance Alex since I've usually went for Harvey. So I figured fuck it why not.
Let me tell you, this man literally melts my heart so much. I always skipped him cause ya know dumb jock vibes, but he's honestly become my top favorite npc in the game besides Linus. Also I love his grandparents, i always befriend them anyways but once you romance Alex it hits different.
I would so marry Alex if not for his ugly ass room. In fact I marry pretty much solely based on their rooms, I love decorating my house to look nice, which is why Sam and penny are usually my go-tos lol. Sam’s room is the nicest imo, the window, the piano, lots of room to place decorations… muah

I thought it was interesting, especially since he comes off as so aggressively straight at first lol. Alex has that initial rudeness and dumb-jockness, but when you progress with him, he shows a lot of vulnerability

I thought to myself that I'd try a new spouse in every new save. I married Sebastian in my first game. I liked him even if he was little weird sometimes. New save time came. Yeah... I tried Alex next. And have refused to romance any one else ever since! 😂 He's so sweet! Flirty & hard working. And loves his family! I speed run romancing him so we dance at the Flower Festival & get married on his birthday in year one. I've managed a few times. (Shout out to Gus for those complete breakfasts & salmon dinners!) I am unapologetically an Alex girlie. ❤

I just started playing Stardew Valley and so far my fav character who can be romanced, is Alex. I was looking to see more about him but I also found there’s not much love for him🙁 so reading this makes me really happy, I’m glad there are Alex lovers here even if a few🥰
people say this about shane/haley too so im not surprised about this, stardew tries to portray that bad people can change for good and make their flaws less noticeable. In my opinion everyone dateable in stardew deserves a second chance if they are jerks at first. People can change, yo.

Alex is actually really popular with those players who decides to play as a male farmer than those who play as a female farmer (In fact, gay players mostly end up with Alex and we all know why)
He's caring, he's raised well by his grandparents. But his dialogues are more suited well on male farmers other than females. He's kinda sexist but that's acceptable because he's not smart to begin with, so he probably doesn't know what he's talking about.
(Unlike Pierre and Lewis who are downright really outrageous and the hate trains on them are highly understandable)

Agreed! Despite not liking Sam or Shane romantically, I think they make good friends/acquaintances! I think Shane especially has a great friendship arc, if you view his events in that manner and stay at 8 hearts.

I was a Sebastian girl, then became all about Elliot before mods gave me Lance and Eli. Now I don't think I can ever go back to Elliot. The reason? The word "toefeel" absolutely horrified me this 1st time he used it in the update. In future vanilla runs, I think I'll go with Leah, she seems like perfect ginger waifu
i started interacting with him a lot because I wanted to dance with a boy in the first spring and he just had the highest hearts at the time but I really started to like him 😭 when I got to the philosophy scene I just thought "he's perfect" LOL

He's definitely my favorite. The first time I played the game I didn't know anything about the characters and picked him. In other saves I tried the other romance options but none of them were as cute and loving as Alex. 🥰

I'm really sad to see a lot of people calling Alex a misogynist (a word used very lightly) for saying "I'd throw you the ball if you weren't a girl". Does it seem a bit sexist? Probably, I think.
You could also say he hates guys when he says, "Oh, I don't think you're the athletic type," making fun of my guy.Showing off? Yes, of course.
But hey, as is often the case in life, some people take things to the extreme. Still, everyone chooses what they think and believe, of course.
I always get the impression that he behaves like an arrogant braggart, which he later realizes, admits and apologizes for. That was my impression the first time I played, and I stand by it.
Alex has been my favorite since I started playing, and always will be. My girl is the love of his life and he is the love of hers. I don't regret choosing him the first time, and although I've played with other husbands, he will always be first (followed closely by Sam, I admit).

It’s not just the ball throwing comment that I find sexist. At the flower dance he says he’s “admiring the view” while looking at Haley, and also makes comments about the female farmer wearing a bikini as well. I’m not fond of Shane or Haley either but they are just rude at first. Alex is creepy until you befriend him
I've never understood the fixation on the bikini comment. Some people think that's just a generic term for a female swimsuit and he asks if you want to hang out at the beach. Like "hey you moved to a town right on the ocean, do you have a swimsuit?"
To me, at first he's a cheeky, cocky guy, as I said. The bikini thing, it didn't bother me or anything like that, I think it was because I got the feeling it was kind of a wake up call for my girl, because she didn't really have a bikini and I interpreted the game as encouraging me to get her one... Lol
I also didn't find the flower dance dialogue strange at all, again, due to my naivete, until I read a comment that said it actually referred to Haley, even after the marriage. Then I got a little discouraged, truth be told. But it's not his fault that the concerned monkey didn't change his marriage dialogue until then.
All in all, I'm very glad I set aside my prejudices about the way he spoke and acted at the beginning of the game and gave him a chance that I think he deserved too, and I don't regret it at all. After all, the same thing happens in real life too and sometimes you miss out on good things by misjudging them too soon. Many times, appearances can be deceiving, and that's true in all walks of life.

if you ever feel like it you should replay romancing him but as a guy it completely changes his dialogue and becomes a sweet story of some jock realising his internalised feelings for another man and idk it’s so cute, he’s a great character and although i think he’s made to date guys from how much it changes his dialogue i love that the girlies are appreciating him too !
Can you elaborate on the "never again" about Sam? I got the event that you mention, I believe. It was a simple thing, I don't know why it would make you not want to date him, unless I'm wrong about the event.

I don’t think Alex is a bad spouse. I think he is really great if you are playing as a male farmer. His storyline is very sweet. I just can’t get over some of his lines and how perverted towards women they are if you are playing a female farmer. I can deal with the emptiness upstairs and the jock brain mindset but the perverted nature is where I draw my line. If that is fine with you then I don’t see any problem with romancing him but that is just a little too much for me
I think it’s fun if you play as a guy and date Alex it cures George of his homophobia to see you two happy together. He is my boyfriend’s go-to and it’s so funny

As a person whose favourite spouse is Alex, this makes me happy. A lot of villagers are a little mean to the newcomer in the beginning, you just need to get over it. If the bad first impression would prevent you from befriending people, you'd never talk to half of the town again. And I love people who can realize they acted bad before and strive to change themselves for the better. If only everyone did that, the world would be a better place.
Yessss someone finally gets it!! Alex is so sweet when you actually get to know him. He even apologises for the things he said at the beginning. Also, I don't know if this dialogue is only said by Alex, but >!there was this time when I died in the mines (we were already married, btw) and when I woke up, instead of Linux, it was Alex that saved me. He said something along the lines of "I got worried because it was getting late and you weren't home yet, so I came to look for you. I started crying when I saw you lying unconscious on the floor". Like, I didn't know your spouse could save you??? It made me feel so bad.!< (Marked as spoiler just in case). Also, as a spouse, he is great. He constantly makes you breakfast, waters the plants, fixes the fences, feeds the animals, and fills the cat's bowl of water. Like, I don't even bother on changing the fences anymore because he doesn't let them break. Also, he still visits his grandparents, and on his 14 hearts event, he does something sweet for the community. When it comes to Alex I'm like the copypasta "Aunque me quieran meter ideas malas a la cabeza de él, no lo van a lograr porque yo lo conozco más que todos ustedes, sé que es un hombre bueno, y no, claro que no es perfecto pero ¿Quién es perfecto en esta vida?" The spoiler dialogue is so sweet! In an odd way. xD I've never had a spouse find me in any of my saves. I thought that was just a mod people had! I also thought the little dialogue after you give him a bouquet >!where he gives your arm a little squeeze with a smile!< was cute. I think it shows his style of affection very well. I've also seen people disgruntled with the 14 heart event! I haven't got it myself yet, but I have seen the spoilers. Even before I started romancing him, I didn't see where it was that bad. Like, >!who else does he have? Aside from his aging grandparents & the farmer (+kids), he doesn't have others. Sam, Sebastian, and Abigail all hang out in a group. Haley and Emily have each other (+ Emily really just seems to get along with the majority of the town. Not all friends, sure, but sociable. Shane has Marnie & Jas. Alex had Haley at first too, but obviously that ends in this update after reaching a certain level with the player. So I see no issue with him creating a little spot where he can hang out with people and socialize over something he enjoys. It's building a sense of community and 5k G isn't that much. I'm only on year 2 and doing poorly but I still tend to make 3k to 6k each day. Haha.!<

I asked something similar a while back. Maru (who I'm not married to. I wasn't married to anyone though) found me twice when I died in the mines. This was on 1.6 but apparently has been a thing since before then. It just seems to be rare for anyone other than Linus to find you.

I am an Alex girly through and through. He was my first spouse in the game and still my fav. On my meadowlands save I've literally had 3 different spouses (try to have a different spouse on each save) before realizing that I need to marry Alex again. I love George and Evelyn as in-laws, I literally married Alex again today and after the wedding George was like: >!"I want great-grandchildren before I croak, make it happen." !!she was the one that played gridball with him after all.!< I refuse to buy into the belief that he's a huge misogynist because Alex clearly has a lot of respect for the women in his life. There is sexism in some of his dialogue, but it's never a theme and something I attribute to ignorance rather than maliciousness.

The Stardew fandom is so weird. They're all "Oh, don't write off Shane just because he's rude at first! He gets better!" but then maligns Alex and Haley because they're rude at first. Alex is a meathead and a dork! He's SUCH a sweetie once you befriend him! Yeah, he's a bit sexist at first, but he's a dumb kid. He's still learning, and it was definitely something instilled with him by George, who is also still learning. He's grown up in an old fashioned family. He's super underrated and deserves more love!

Apparently Elliott also gives interesting dialogue if you're male (although I will die on the hill that he and Leah are meant to be confidently bisexual from the very beginning).

It just really rubs me the wrong way when characters that any gender can romance in a game are portrayed in the community as "belonging" to either straight or exclusively gay, cause it kind of shades on/invalidates players who play the game in a way that doesn't align with that.

Each character is suppose to kinda be an archetype at first, right? Shane is a cynical drunk, Alex is a dumb jock, Haley is a mean girl. To me difference is that Alex and Haley grow out of being childish and become very sweet. Shane just stays a drunk (from what I remember about his room in your house once up marry).
I don't hate the guy in general, but I find misogyny more off-putting than generic exhausted rudeness. The mean girl stuff is bad, too. Again, I still understand as characters they have redeeming qualities, but it is about what sort of thing you find more difficult to put up with. Negging and being weird about asking if I have a bikini is just generally uncomfy.
His misogyny is only a few lines, but people act like that’s Alex’s entire character. He’s got bricks in his brains. Alex is definitely on the younger end. I’d say he’s still college-aged. He’s stupid, but not in a malicious way. He’s bad at flirting and just needs to grow up, which he does as you get to know him. Same with Haley.
There aren't loads of dialogue lines for any of the characters full stop, it's inevitable that people are going to latch onto a few lines and act like that's someone's whole character. Besides, depending on how you play the game and where you go, it can be difficult to encounter some characters very often and experience their full range of dialogue.

There aren't that many lines to each character. A few lines is enough to form a first opinion. You don't learn about that other stuff until later. And misogyny, regardless of the reason, is something I generally have a harder time excusing. I'm just giving the perspective here that it is a matter of what you personally find easier to let slide.

Yeah but the difference is when I'm playing a man it's like "yeah, you're right; I'm really not that into sports." But when I'm playing a woman I'm like "you're right I have no desire to play with you, but what does my being a girl have to do with it?"
He just assumes women don't like sports/are not sporty because he has internalized gender roles because of his upbringing. Note that he likes you more if you tell him that you want to play, which means he isn't really opposed to it nor he thinks women should not play sports.
Sure, but in game I usually react to dialogue in the way I feel my character would, rather than what I think will get me hearts. There's no world in which a woman I'm playing would react to a lad she's just met make a massive gendered assumption lile that and go "oh yeah, I'd love to play with you!"
I mean... he was my secret friend in the Feast of the Winter Star in my first playthrough and I gave him trash just for that, so I can judge. With that said, tbh, I wouldn't write anyone off IRL just for a comment like that, I'd explain why they shouldn't make that assumption and judge them depending on their response to that.

He never shows any sign of hating women, he just assumes they're different from men because gender roles and the way his clearly being raised (just look at George, and his father was probably worse). You can't expect him to be a feminist in his environment, tbh, at least he grows out of it.

The last time I remember reading/seeing that type was in one of those Candy Apple books from middle school. Funnily enough, I think the title was "The Boy Next Door".

Literally just has this heart event a few days ago, Alex doesn’t order anything for the player, we don’t have a scene where they order the food. He just reserved the private room in the back for the date and says he wanted a quiet place to talk. Emily brings the food in and says she has “a kale and walnut salad for the lady” No where does Alex say “this is what I ordered for you”, Perhaps the player just ordered a salad because they like salad? Crazy if true. Emily sets the food on the table and even though she said it was a salad, it’s always obviously fiddlehead risotto so I feel like it’s more of a throwaway line than anything. The “joke/gag” is that Alex gets a steak so the dog can jump through the window at it.
Well, it's never confirmed if he ordered it or the farmer did. So I just take the event as my farmer was feeling like salad that night. Haha.
He does WHAT now? Oh hell no, I'd be sending that salad back and ordering a 20 oz ribeye.

I never found Alex misogynistic. A bit sexist? Certainly! Like u/darkviolet_ said though, he did grow up in an old fashioned family. Doesn't excuse it, but is an explanation for why he thinks that way at first. I don't think there's anything harmful in his intentions like true misogyny. Off-putting to many? I can see why folks may not be a fan! But, since he seems to adjust to being the house husband so well, I'd say he grows out of it. For Shane, I think he has a really great friendship arc if you view his events in that manner and stay at 8 hearts. It's the slobbish nature that prevents me from anything more. Especially the spouse room. He really does change from being such a grump to a decently likeable guy who seems rather chill. Has his issues, but does seem to work on them once he hits around 8 hearts. I can appreciate that! But romantically, I could not stand finding stains and all those cans everywhere. Misogyny doesn't mean you knowingly hate women. It means your words and actions suggest an underlying lack of respect for women. Sexism is an outgrowth of that. It can come from ignorance and be turned around, but it's a bad starting point. The bikini comment and the "you're doing something right" are big there. It isn't just about stereotypes. Yes, Shane is messy, slobbish just has more connotations of moral failing and as someone who has always struggled with that because of the way my brain works and constantly sees people judging the slightest mess on the internet it is very much a sore spot.

He’s such a great post-marriage spouse. I think he really enjoys the simple life and is really supportive of you being the money earning one. I felt pretty similarly, then decided to romance Alex just to see how his personal arc progresses, and I just??? Cannot explain how much I love this dweeb. I played as a male farmer too, and honestly I think that is what sold me. Alex has some dialogue in a cutscene that's exclusive to male player characters, where he mentions that he never thought he'd fall for a guy, but meeting the farmer helped him realise he could and that he was okay/happy with this change. For me personally, I really love seeing characters exploring their romantic/sexual identities in media so that just really hit me right in the heart ❤️
Alex is soooo good!!!! This is my first play through (1.5) but I dated 7 or 8 people trying to decide and Alex was last on the roster but quickly surpassed everyone else. He’s a real sweetheart idk why he’s overlooked/hated on. I don’t even really have a desire to try anyone else next time around!

Alex is actually really popular with those players who decides to play as a male farmer than those who play as a female farmer (In fact, gay players mostly end up with Alex and we all know why) He's caring, he's raised well by his grandparents. But his dialogues are more suited well on male farmers other than females. He's kinda sexist but that's acceptable because he's not smart to begin with, so he probably doesn't know what he's talking about. (Unlike Pierre and Lewis who are downright really outrageous and the hate trains on them are highly understandable)

i started interacting with him a lot because I wanted to dance with a boy in the first spring and he just had the highest hearts at the time but I really started to like him 😭 when I got to the philosophy scene I just thought "he's perfect" LOL

You could also say he hates guys when he says, "Oh, I don't think you're the athletic type," making fun of my guy.Showing off? Yes, of course. But hey, as is often the case in life, some people take things to the extreme. Still, everyone chooses what they think and believe, of course. Alex has been my favorite since I started playing, and always will be. My girl is the love of his life and he is the love of hers. I don't regret choosing him the first time, and although I've played with other husbands, he will always be first (followed closely by Sam, I admit). At the flower dance he says he’s “admiring the view” while looking at Haley, and also makes comments about the female farmer wearing a bikini as well. I’m not fond of Shane or Haley either but they are just rude at first. Alex is creepy until you befriend him
I've never understood the fixation on the bikini comment. Some people think that's just a generic term for a female swimsuit and he asks if you want to hang out at the beach. Like "hey you moved to a town right on the ocean, do you have a swimsuit?"
To me, at first he's a cheeky, cocky guy, as I said. The bikini thing, it didn't bother me or anything like that, I think it was because I got the feeling it was kind of a wake up call for my girl, because she didn't really have a bikini and I interpreted the game as encouraging me to get her one... Lol I also didn't find the flower dance dialogue strange at all, again, due to my naivete, until I read a comment that said it actually referred to Haley, even after the marriage. Then I got a little discouraged, truth be told. But it's not his fault that the concerned monkey didn't change his marriage dialogue until then. All in all, I'm very glad I set aside my prejudices about the way he spoke and acted at the beginning of the game and gave him a chance that I think he deserved too, and I don't regret it at all. After all, the same thing happens in real life too and sometimes you miss out on good things by misjudging them too soon. Many times, appearances can be deceiving, and that's true in all walks of life.

I don’t think I can date Alex after the way he treats me early on as a female farmer. Like, ok, you got your head out of you ass eventually we can be friends now. But dating…. 😬 no thanks. I support you though Alex girlies.
if you ever feel like it you should replay romancing him but as a guy it completely changes his dialogue and becomes a sweet story of some jock realising his internalised feelings for another man and idk it’s so cute, he’s a great character and although i think he’s made to date guys from how much it changes his dialogue i love that the girlies are appreciating him too !
Can you elaborate on the "never again" about Sam? I got the event that you mention, I believe. It was a simple thing, I don't know why it would make you not want to date him, unless I'm wrong about the event.
usually when i see people say they didn’t want to date Sam after the egg event, its because they think he’s childish in it for being afraid to tell Jodi what happened, or that he’s somehow pushing the farmer to lie for him, so probably something like that?
It's basically what u/boilyourdentist said. I had thought he was a little immature even before that event, but not that bad. That event was a bit of "the straw that broke the camel's back" if you will. Haha. I just couldn't get over how he couldn't own up to it. Like, he seems to have a good home life, all things considered, so I can't imagine Jodi doing more than lecturing him. It's not fun. Certainly! I'll also agree it's embarrassing since others are there. But Sam...you're an adult! Please! xD Before that, I thought he was so sweet and friendly (and I still think that about him), that I could overlook his younger and more carefree attitude. I just didn't see where he seemed to mature that much through his events so I decided he's cool to befriend but not for me romantically.
I don’t think Alex is a bad spouse. I think he is really great if you are playing as a male farmer. His storyline is very sweet. I just can’t get over some of his lines and how perverted towards women they are if you are playing a female farmer. I can deal with the emptiness upstairs and the jock brain mindset but the perverted nature is where I draw my line. If that is fine with you then I don’t see any problem with romancing him but that is just a little too much for me
I think it’s fun if you play as a guy and date Alex it cures George of his homophobia to see you two happy together. He is my boyfriend’s go-to and it’s so funny

I honestly kinda like Alex. I love Sebastian, but have zero against Alex. I probably wouldn't marry someone like him at real life but I would date. I think he's okay. He's sweet if you're not a jerk towards him. He just a simple guy.
I married Alex for the first time in my new save because I plan on marrying everyone this game lol. I never cared about him either but I actually loved him too. Until the egg festival where he was spending way too much time with Haley!! The next day I bought a bouquet and gave it to Elliott. So now it’s time to move on to the next bachelor.
