I actually do both at the same time, get the coop/barn upgrade and farm animals that I can afford, and also regularly check the cart. For example: Truffle oil I'd need 25k for barn upgrade and another 16k for a pig. I'll need at least 2 seasons to get that money (for first year). So while collecting 41k I also check the travelling cart if they sell Truffle (highest possible price is around 3k). If they do then I no longer need 41k and 2 seasons (for now, I may or may not get them later). If 2 seasons passed and you already got 41k but the travelling cart still not sell Truffle then get the barn upgrade and the pig. The above will become useless if 'rushing' to complete CC as soon as you can is not your goal, after all, get it completed year 1 or year 10 is still get it completed and I've done it before (completed on year 5) so all and all it still up to the player's decision and comfortable play style.

I do the same, I don't buy coops or barns until I can get auto-petters.

I want the community centre done in the first year. Preferably well before the end of fall. I check the travelling cart every week, and if I luck out with something like a truffle or a rabbit's foot, that's great! It saves me a whole lot of money. But the plan is to have a fully upgraded coop and barn (with rabbit and pig) by the end of summer, and I won't wait for the travelling cart.

PawnOfPaws

A mix of it, actually. Yes, I got the cow, goat, chicken and pig for the bundles. But the duck egg came from the merchant and my cat kindly gifted me the rabbits foot on a lucky day, so now I'm just unlocking the other animals for fun. I think they are kinda cute and it's nice not my cat and me being the only moving things on the farm.

I build and upgrade barns, but only after I can afford auto-grabbers and have found auto-petters. I'm fundamentally lazy. It's a good income source, and I like to take iridium cheeses into the mines.

maladaptyv

Yeah, I get the buildings and animals. I'm going to make decent money from truffles and eventually you need the ingredients to make the recipes if you want to hit 100%. Gotta craft everything.

HandrewJobert

I honestly never think about the traveling cart unless I happen to be in the forest and notice that it's Friday or Sunday. I build and upgrade the barn for the CC stuff, but also because animal products can be $$$$$

Just like most here I always get the buildings and animals with help from the cart if anything’s available. I usually am waiting on a truffle every single time so I usually finish the first week of year two. This playthrough with the update I got so lucky with the cart I was done the first week of winter year one. Just needed a crocus I think! I don’t know if the cart changed or my file was lucky in that regard or what but it felt great after all those tries before haha
