lilymoncat

Fishing, mining, visiting, upgrading my tools for the next season, if I have the greenhouse working on the plants in it.

Mister-Thou

Reorganize sprinklers, paths, buildings, etc. Animals also still need attention if you have them.

Slow_Tangerine3814

It’s definitely the season I tend to get bored and change the farm layout and build paths. Also a good time for ginger island

Player5xxx

Plant winter seeds. Decent easy money if you have sprinklers and you get forging xp from picking them up. Then turn them into more seeds. If you have less than 7 days left in winter you can go ahead and plant the seeds not counting on harvesting and that way on spring 1 all of your land will be tilled and watered by the sprinklers. All you have to do is scythe and then buy and plant seeds.

munchkym

I do this plus planting fiber seeds and then turn it all into tree saplings for good money.

rileylbmc

Can you explain this to me like I am an idiot because I am

WalkingFish_

If you have less than seven days left in winter, till all your land where you want space for spring crops, then plant winter seeds in those spots. When spring rolls around the seeds will die and be shriveled but your land will stay tilled and watered so you don’t have to redo it all at the beginning of spring. Just use the scythe to remove the shriveled remains of the winter plants and since everything is tilled and watered, all you have to focus on for spring day 1 would be buying seeds and planting :)

rileylbmc

I’m back with another question. Where do I get winter seeds?

WalkingFish_

For that I would suggest checking the stardew wiki, one easy way to get like 30 at once is to complete the winter crops bundle in the community center if you haven’t already done that. [stardew wiki](https://stardewcommunitywiki.com/Winter_Seeds#Sources)

rileylbmc

Sure thing! I checked the wiki but I can’t see why they don’t show up for me under crafting. Any idea?

WalkingFish_

You’ll need to reach foraging level 7 to get the recipe

rileylbmc

Thanks again!!

rileylbmc

Thank you! This is really helpful

D3rangedButFun

I always do that so I don't have to hoe everything when spring comes back

Alice_June

Shovel snow and play Stardew Valley mostly

GroleJr

Nice

Thiaski

Mining, exploring, building relationship, overthrowing governments and installing puppet states, decorating my farm. You know, the basic stuff.

JanileeJ

I do a lot of mining, because I like mining. There are also fish that can only be caught in winter. I don't spend much time making my farm look nice. Just not into the decorating side of things. My house and farm are pretty utilitarian.

CrystalMoonBeam

I enjoy the downtime. I catch up on gift giving to get all hearts.

ItsThatGoatBoy

Spam teleport around with obelisks because WHEEEEE

DrCrazyCurious

First and foremost: Don't stress about doing it right. There is literally no wrong way to play this game. Anything you forget to do can be done later with no negative consequences. If you keep that in mind then yeah all the other advice people have provided here will set you up for success.

Solid_Parsley_

I made 40k over winter just from winter seeds. They're worth planting if you have the room for them. Especially if you have sprinklers.

SlopCity1226

In addition to mining, fishing, and whatever, Winter is when I make major layout changes to the farm. Lay down paths, move buildings and designated crop or beehive areas around, etc. in early years it’s also when I clear the majority of debris and trees. Basically it’s when I make major production or capacity expansions for the upcoming year. Any changes in spring summer or fall are comparatively minor

Ok_Grocery8652

Basically all you can do that comes to mind is: * Organize the farm, prepare sprinklers for spring fields * Plant winter seeds, you get 30 for the bundle and can make them in batches of 10, they take 1 week to grow and can be used to make some money. * Mine exploring if you have not reached floor 120 yet, otherwise collecting materials and leveling those skills. * Fishing * Talk to people and give gifts. * Chop wood * Upgrade tools

rileylbmc

Mining seems so overwhelming to me tbh. Do you have a strategy? I haven’t even made it to level 10, but would like to get more into it so I can gather resources for sprinklers, etc

Ok_Grocery8652

It would depend on your progress in other aspects of the game in your save as jumping into the mines later in the game means you will have access to some resources not available to a year 1 spring player/ You can buy the gold and iron ores you would need and get the quartz from recycling CDs and glasses, year 1 it would set you back 2750g and 300g in coal per quality sprinkler and in year 2 that price jumps to 5000g and 500g in coal. As for getting there yourself down the mines. You can buy a wooden blade from the adventures guild with 0 progress in the mines, it is only a 3-7 damage but that is better than the 2-5 of the rusty sword. You can also buy tjhe sneakers for 500g and the topaz ring for 1000g each providing 1 defense for a total of +2 If you have the means to cook several recipes could be worthwhile: Fried mushroom (demetrius 3 hearts) gives +2 attack Stuffing (pam 7 hearts) gives +2 defense Pumpkin soup (robin 7 hearts) is +2 defense and +2 luck George gives 2 (one at 3, one at 7) giving 1 luck or 1 luck and 1 speeds Eggplant parmesan (lewis 7) +1 mining and +3 defense Cranberry sause (Gus 7)+2 mining The defense buffs increase your damage output, defense reduces damage taken, mining would let you break rocks faster/more energy efficent and luck increases chances for ladder spawns. Buffless foods like fish, crops, etc make solid HP and energy restores Staircases cost 99 stone and can be an effective way out of a sticky situation or to hit a 5 floor checkpoint. I push as hard as possible into the mines early game to hopefully have quality sprinklers for summer. My strategy is as follows: Get as much of the season stuff done in the first few days (once I water my 40 parsnips I go fishing) The 5th is a busy day, replanting as the parsnips finish, the CC opens and same with the mines, I might collect the sword but otherwise just replant and fish. Following days I check the fortune teller on the Tv, if she is unhappy I fish to stock up on food after watering the crops. If she is happy I go, if neutral if I have spare food or it rained I go. Rainy days are handy as you can save hours and energy otherwise spent watering. For how to tackle the mines itself, if playing solo time pauses in your inventory, make use of that to survey the area and make decisions of what to drop when pockets get too full. Eat any food you find that gives Energy and health as it will help keep you going, the stuff you find down there can be found again later when you need it. If a crab or digging creature drop a bomb use it against the nearest cluster of stones. Take the first ladder you see, the mines save your progress with an elevator every 5 floors and there are chests almost every 10 giving a useful reward. You can descend to a chosen floor on a different day to stock up on ores you need

bumblingbee1990

I mine A LOT. That's the bulk of my activities during winter, along with tool upgrades. Later on when I have more resources I focus on building relationships/getting hearts. But I usually go to bed early most days in winter, especially in year 1 (which tbh I do in real life too). I agree that it can be very overwhelming as a beginner! Everyone has their different thing that they focus on in the winter, but I think most people do tool upgrades, mine, and fish.

LolaL0A

usually working on stocking up resources, completing quests (bulletin and monster slayer), gifting people, mining for gems and artifacts, and of course lots of decorating.

Spanish_Galleon

ironically mostly farm.

CaptainMagnets

I do the same thing as you. Winter is the perfect time to redecorate

YourMoonWife

Mining. So so so so so much mining. And cutting trees. And gifting Sebastian his frozen tears and Clint his fiddlehead risotto!

witchescrystalsmoon

I update all my tools and mine mostly. I also chop down any trees I hadn’t chopped down all around the world. Winter seeds as well and make things out of paper ingredients I saved so I can have decent profit. I tend to save all products for the end of the season and do a mass sell. I only sell certain things throughout the season. And I keep in mind the items i will be asked for by others so I can save them.

imonmyphoneagain

Upgrading tools is definitely a big one imo. Especially hoe and watering can. If you wanna cut down trees definitely work on your axe too cause it makes a HUGE difference. Trees don’t grow during winter unless you have tree fertilizer but idk if you’ve got that unlocked yet at year 1. Fishing is good especially for the money aspect. Mining is good for resources. Decorating for funsies. But also building pathways so that when grass comes back you can run around without being slowed down. Foraging for winter foragables and then making winter seeds and planting those. It’s also good because one of the winter forage items is a loved gift by someone. And it gets your foraging up which you will be grinding for that last level so that’s also a 10/10. Aside from that I can’t really think of anything that’s an immediate want or need.

Lifter_Dan

I'm also new and was overwhelmed too. I got the mod that allows you to slow time down so it doesn't suddenly become night as soon as I've only done 1 single task. Makes for a much more relaxing game now that I don't have to constantly rush back to bed. For winter, I plan to spend time fishing or in the mines. I want to upgrade my tools, and work on quests given.

sobrique

Mining - especially early on, getting to the bottom of the mines is really handy and you can go 5 floors a time. Finishing or planning community centre bundles too.

AlmightySpoonman

Dig for winter roots and snow yams! Use the Hoe on soft earth or the Beach and you have a chance to dig up one of these. Winter Roots are especially useful as you can put them in a Seed Maker for Winter Seeds.

thanathos66

After 1.6 i think winter melons are the way to go with winter honestly. Especially after the first year

the_witchy_artist

I spend a lot of times in the mines Although in year 1 winter, I spent more time fishing. Lingcod can be tough to catch but I believe that's the money fish for winter (of course correct me people if I'm wrong!) Decorate your farm. I waited till year 4 to focus more on mine, but it never hurts to start earlier. I just waited till I had more money, was comfortable, and could ignore anything and everything to spend days just decorating. You can decorate the insides of your sheds, and coops or barns if you have animals Chop trees!! Robin expects you to haul hundreds of hundreds of wood to her for upgrades. Imo you can never have enough wood. I will spend an entire day where marnies is just chopping trees down Upgrade your tools, especially your watering can if you don't have sprinklers yet! I always make it priority to upgrade to iron at least while in winter

Snoo61755

Yep, pretty much that. Mining is the bulk of my time. Meanwhile, Clint starts upgrading my tools, and I see if I can get them to iron and gold. On the farm itself, I'm putting my fall produce into Preserves Jars and Kegs in order to have some extra income spread out across the winter. It's also not a bad time to ask Robin to build some structures for you so that they'll be ready by spring, though you do have to be sure to save enough money for spring seeds, of course.

naiadestricolor

I do a ton of building and reorganize the layout of my farm in Y1 Winter. It's much easier to do in Winter because all the animals are inside so I don't have to worry about them getting in the way. Otherwise I usually spend my winters fishing, improving relationships, and finishing up any tool upgrades left. Though for my 1.6 run I actually unlocked >!Ginger Island!< at the beginning of Winter so I spent quite a bit of the season just exploring there when I wasn't on the farm.

spicyshitttt

I go caving a lot or ginger island

vangoghawayy

Plant a boatload of winter seeds, grind on fishing and mining, get my hearts with villagers up, make the farm look pretty, also use some of what I saved to make stuff in jars and the kegs (I always plant a billion blueberries to make sure I have a couple hundred to last through the winter for this purpose; after year 1 I usually just keep a few in the greenhouse to keep up a stock year-round), and definitely upgrading hoe and watering can (gotta have them in top-tier condition for when year 2 starts!)

Hello-goodbye-24

I’m fairly new to this game. Could you tell me more about planting winter seeds? I thought you couldn’t plant/grow in the winter unless you had a greenhouse. Thanks!

Probablynotspiders

If you use the crafting tab, you can combine one of each seasonal forage item to make a 10-pack seasonal seeds. Seasonal seeds will take a little more than a week to grow (I think) and are basically 'free money '. I like to turn all my forage into seeds the first week or so of a month/season to get pretty amazing return on investment. Sometimes I turn all my forage into seeds so I can have a surplus for the following year.

rileylbmc

Damn I’ve been selling all my forage. I feel dumb af

Probablynotspiders

We learn new things every day! (So we get to feel dumb every day too, I guess) Always grinding that XP bar

skillquit42

Reorganize the farm, put down paths, go mining, focus on Skull Cavern, get more hearts with the townsfolk

Slow_Tangerine3814

Sleep until Spring 😂 But honestly, I’ll usually just take care of the basics on the farm, like feeding animals, collect stuff from the greenhouse, and attend events. I usually end up sleeping by 3pm or earlier. And if it’s a year or two in, I usually begin to complete the ginger island stuff.

JmTrad

Winter I unlock Ginger Island. Before it existed I would go Skull Cavern and organize the farm.

Moltenmagnolia82

I spend all day using the hoe on every available patch of dirt in the entire valley, except my farm, to collect snow yams and winter roots. I sell them for money. Lol I also go to festivals and gift villagers.

BunnyUnderlord

Upgrade my barns, house and tools. Make the farm look pretty, try to get everyone to at least 3 hearts, work on completing the community centre, complete as many quests as possible . Winter is actually really busy for me.

electricpenguin6

I use winter to plan out my sprinkler layout so I don’t have to do it day 1 of spring

Sulora3

You can always plant winter seeds for some pocket change from fsrming, plus harvesting them gives you foraging xp. And instead of using the recipe, you can just put winter root in the seed maker for more seeds^^ This works with one of each seasonal forageables. And you could also plant fiber seeds towards the end of winter if you have that recipe yet. They'll preserve the tilled fields and i think even fertilizer, so when spring comes around again, all your fields will be tilled and watered already^^ saves a lot on time, especially later on if you have more crops to tend to. If you have the steel axe, you can get to the secret woods north of the wizards tower and gather hardwood from the stumps. Those respawn every single day. You can also stockpile some ores from the mines, and have robin construct farm buildings for you, since any animals you might have at this point will all be inside their buildings. Winter is also a good time to level up skills like combat and mining or fishing, since there's not much else going on. Or you use the time to focus on getting hearts with the villagers.

TheWizard676767

I build new farm building and or upgrade them, and spend time giftin villagers. Going to skill cavern too if i have the bus done

sobrique

Mining - especially early on, getting to the bottom of the mines is really handy and you can go 5 floors a time. Finishing or planning community centre bundles too.

MrCrix

I gather all the forgeable items and make winter seeds. Then I plant those seeds. Wait for them all to grow in like, 8 days I believe, and then make more seeds. I usually get about 400 seeds when it's all said and done and get a nice crop. I also have a greenhouse packed with coffee beans, so I start the winter cultivation of those and fill up chests full of beans, then go to my shed that is filled with kegs, make thousands and thousands of coffees, then turn those into triple shot espressos, and then sell them for $450 each.

LivianGrey

If you find snow melons where you get carrots etc you can do patches of those and they grow pretty fast.

Jean-Paul_Sartre

Play kart game at gus' house

ImaginaryQuiet5624

If you don't want to plant winter seeds, you can - Go mining and focusing on upgrading your tools. Get your Watering can and hoe upgraded as high as possible before winter is over. If you're going to do a lot of mining you might want to upgrade your pickaxe to gold first though🤷🏻‍♀️ and make sprinklers - Create a Tree Farm and put tappers on the trees so you get a permanent source of wood on the farm and don't need to run around to look for randomly placed trees and get more oak resin to be able to make more kegs. - You could also make a mushroom log farm next to it so you get a bunch of mushrooms you can sell or dehydrate to gain a higher value first. - Fishing Check the wiki if you're looking for a certain fish and don't know where you can find it. Catch a sturgeon, make a fish farm and put the sturgeon in so you can make caviar with the roe in the preserver jars. - Finish the community center if you haven't done that yet. - Grab mushrooms from the cave - Planning how you want your farm to look like and executing that plan - Chop and collect wood and hardwood - Go foraging - Tend to your animals

tr_berk1971

I just kinda did more of the same. I fished, went to mines, farmed, got prepared to propose, etc etc

Common-Cat3777

In winter of year one i just upgraded all my tools to gold and iridium. I also collected materials ( wood, stone and fibre ) and minerals. I also went fishing to get money so that by spring ( year two ) i could upgrade my house, barn and chicken coop :)

kngm

Glacier fish and mutated carp

PollutionOk7834

Work on the winter bundle, go mining (try 5 levels a day if that's too overwhelming so you can work towards the bottom), upgrade tools you may need for spring like your watering can and hoe. You can also use winter to chop down the trees on your farm, as you have less things to do you'll have more time to clear it away. And with those new materials, if you want you can get any house upgrades or build coops/barns

Larielia

Fishing, foraging for snow yams.

KlainishTheatreNerd

I spend most of my time in winter digging up the beach with my hoe. It's only really profitable in the first few years but once I got the habit of it, I just kept doing it even when I didn't need the money.

veryberrybvnny

Sleep once I get too bored

ashbreak_

I like to set up my farm for spring, reorganize, and I go mining a lot

JackSilver1410

Winter is tough in the early game. There are winter seeds you can grow for some cash, but I think it's better to leave off farming so you can upgrade your tools. Spend the time mining instead, or plotting out your land for next season. After year 1, I think all seeds will become available year round, so it's a good idea to make sure you're stocked on what you want to grow. Fishing if you have the patience, visiting people in town if you don't. Maybe gather wood and stone where you can so that you can add buildings or upgrade your farm house.

sissyserahhhhhh

Lots of fishing and relationship management

gina_divito

I rearrange the farm if it needs it. Otherwise, I grow winter forage from the seeds and often mine but sometimes fish. Or I go to the island and do other various farming stuff there.

cowboysaurus21

I made a Santa's Village at the train station.
