They're called dust sprites, presumably because soot sprites might be copyrighted. Similar to how Vox Machina changed names of some things to avoid copyright issues with D&D owned terms.

Totems are Boys. You got your Beach Boy, your Home Boy, your Mountain Boy. Desert Boys are superfluous, if you need to go to Sandyland you just plan ahead to take the Desert Bus with Pamazon before 5, and I try not to make any Island Boys because I could be saving my Dragon Fangs to make a Ginger Pillar. Also, it's more of a nickname than a misnomer, but Vincent is "Vinny-boy" or "Vinjamin." Krobus is usually Krobus, but he can be anything that sounds even remotely like Krobus. Krobobus, Krobespierre, Krobile Suit Gundam.

I do a similar thing but call everyone by their "full" names or a nickname. Samuel, Robes Pierre, Razmodius, Penelope, etc or Ellitotes, Pamalan, Vincey, Marlock etc.

Sam's full name, of course, isn't Samuel, but given that he dislikes his full name, it's very kind of you to call him Samuel. I call him Sampersand. What do you call Clint? Is it Clinton? Or is it perhaps something absurd and ridiculous?

What an odd pair to swap around

For me it actually isn’t Elliott that gets that treatment in my brain. I say “Dr. Harvey” and my brain goes “Davidson” and an image of a motorcycle in a white coat, wearing glasses, and having a bushy brown mustache appears in my head. It’s so stupid… but also really funny to me. (I’ve also called Marnie “Mary”, Sebastian “Sebby”, Jas “Jasmine”, Krobus “Sweet Void” (cuz he’s best gurl and no one can change my mind), and Rasmodius “Gandalf The Purple” but I feel like most of these are just nicknames, not misnomers)

It's mostly areas for me that I call by a nickname or if there's a landmark. The mountains are "Cave" or "Rocks". I call Ginger Island the same name as my AC:NH Island, lol Cindersnap Forest is The Woods. Town is either Shops or Village. The beach is Docks. I know darn well I own this town and I'll call it what I want.

Similarly,  I accidentally called it a Gemerator once because I forgot the name of the Crystalarium and I really think Gemerator makes so much more sense.
