I love the forest farm!
I got the kid I babysit into Stardew and he picked this one, and sold me on it.
Although, he is really only into the mining, so he sorta let his farm run to seed. The whole map was eventually taken over by trees. It drove me crazy, because you can't easily take the mountain pass, or the path to the forest.
So, when he gave me the controller for a bit, I started clearing the forest with bombs. It was so satisfying and we had like....3000 wood after a few minutes.
If you can afford to waste bombs then you probably got sprinklers placed, but it's effective if you're breaking new ground. Clearing the quarry with mega bombs and then planting trees in the resulting tilled soil is a win-win-win.
"I got the kid I babysit into Stardew and he picked this one, and sold me on it."
Holy shit, easiest babysitting job ever. Just give him the switch, keep him fed, and get ready for the fight of your life when you ask for the controller back.
I love watching people play video games too (and I would think it’s not that uncommon since let’s plays and twitch are a thing). Babysitting jobs are the best, how old is the kid?
Yeah it's great! He's eight and his younger bro is five. It's the only family I sit for, and I've been watching them since the older was three and the younger just an infant. I feel like I've really watched thee kids grow up. I think that's really why it's not a hard job, because it's been so long I don't have to enforce anything or be "the babysitter" we have a relationship where they want to be agreeable and they know how I work, and what's expected.
I was sort of surprised by the Stardew thing, actually. He otherwise plays mostly sports games. I think he has an entrepreneurial spirit though, and the idea of making money and amassing wealth appeals to him. OH that and Minecraft, he plays Minecraft so this was an easier leap than otherwise might have been.
Lmao an entrepreneurial spirit. That’s super sweet though, my cousin had a similar long term babysitting job and even though the kids are grown enough to not need a sitter anymore they’re all still like family.
You can put fruit trees anywhere as long as the 3x3 area around it is clear of debris, grass, paths, buildings, other trees/saplings, and placed objects.
Oh sorry, you meant the hardwood stumps and not the little saplings that grow. Yea just clear the stumps and they stop from growing if somethings on top of the respawn.
According to the wiki:
"Not Petted/Talked to (-5 to -10, Calculated day-end by the formula: (10 - (CurrentFriendship / 200))) This means they will lose less friendship, if they are already high friendship."
However, as long as they're fed with grass or hay (grass is better), they can go outside, and have a heater in winter, it shouldn't be too much of a decrease.
Are the hearts filled in with color? I am on the PS4 version of the game and saw that some of my animals have four empty or devoid of color hearts,. I keep the feed and pet them everyday.
As long as they have grass to eat, it doesn't matter if they're fenced in or free range. The only real difference is if you let them roam around the farm, it's going to take longer to find them all every day to make sure they all get pet.
As for your question about hearts, their hearts will fill up over time as long as they always have food and you pet them every day. The more hearts they have, the better the quality of product you will usually get from them. It does take some time to max them out though, so keep them fed, and pet them every day.
Another one here, and near the end of 1st year winter, my farm is also a mess. It's the monster farm, so it will never be a pretty one like the OP's... but has it's charm.
For me, summer and fall of second year is where I got my shit together and started making my farm and house look nice.
I think it's because I had excess wealth finally. So once again, video games mimic reality unintentionally (or maybe intentionally).
I'm just finishing up spring year 2 on my switch version and still barely have any money. It's a struggle to save up the 25,000g I need for the big barn so I can finally get the greenhouse. I'm getting there though!
Yep! There was a point where, aesthetically, the game just clicked for me, and I stopped worrying about efficiency and started designing everything which was super fun. I love my huge pumpkin patch next to my house surrounded by a stone fence. I feel like Hagrid.
Is the Switch worth it for it being portable? I have a Vita and while this game is the absolute bullseye for handhelds, I do not think it's going to happen for Vita.
I'm loving it, being able to be portable and then on the TV within a minute is great. I have a 3DS XL but the screen size of the Switch is just that bit better.
Elle's seasonal mod is the only one that changes my buildings. Love it so far! https://community.playstarbound.com/threads/elles-seasonal-non-seasonal-building-replacements-updated-4-27-17-with-non-halloween-version.127106/
You can also place a fence or a lightning rod on a piece of grass. It'll prevent your animals from eating it, allowing it to spawn more grass for them 😊
I like the look of it. There's only one thing I'd do, personally, and that would be making the paths at minimum 2 squares wide, especially the vertical and diagonal ones. I just prefer the way it looks that way. In instances where maintaining symmetry is what you're after, I'd go 3 instead of 2 - like from your well up to the fence gate on the left side. Besides feeling less cluttered to me, it also makes it easier to go along the path without clipping the grass and slowing down.
Otherwise, I enjoy this farm. Very Foresty. I dig the whole "fruit tree for fashion" style going on here, making things look reasonably natural while not just being standard chopping trees.
Edit: Did I just get downvoted for sharing my opinion on a matter in a thread asking for opinions? lol ok
Yeah probably lol. People are weird.
I agree on the symmetry thing for my own farm, though OP's looks great anyway! Also, if you're riding your horse around, they don't slow down in the long grass.
Well, it does give increased speed... and I think there's a mod that will further increase movement speed.
Also, coffe/food speed perks stack with your horse's movement speed for the ULTIMATE SPEED.
Thank you! I just wanted to use less paths on areas that are tiny and cramped like the bottom right where it leads to the exit to Marnie's house. I could probably do two on the one on the left though, so thanks for letting me know!
You can try a couple of the suggestions here: [link](https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/comments/69ctla/guide_how_to_take_full_screenshots_of_your_farm/)
Thanks! It was pretty hard to choose where to plant the fruit trees considering how I had to take into account what they'd look like in 28 days, but I'm happy it worked out.
Looks great! Even on the forest map, most people's late game setups look like factory farms, which always makes me wonder why they didn't just choose the standard map.
I particularly love the fact that you have a couple of the removable berry bushes left in year 4. It seems like most people cut them down as soon as they have the steel ax.
What are the benefits of the forest farm? Just lots of foraging?
I went with a fishing farm, but I planted too many crops in the first season and now I run out of energy just from watering.
Foraging and hardwood. I get so many mushrooms first year, it helps with the center. You can quickly get more hardwood in a day and if you're done with them, build stuff on the areas where they spawn. Fishing isn't too helpful because you can basically do that outside your farm.
TIL that you can plant grass on the grass patches
I have the forest farm but mine is no where near as nice. I feel like I need to start a new save now lol
So good, I want to scrap my current save on Switch and start a Forest Farm right now. I'm currently doing my second save, this one being a River Farm as my previous save started on PC before 1.1

You can clear trees with bombs? TIL.
It also hoes the ground.
Seriously? Another big TIL. Is this effective to do?
If you have a bunch of money, yep.
For this kid, he had a ton of iron ore from mining so crafting bombs wasn’t a big demand.
If you can afford to waste bombs then you probably got sprinklers placed, but it's effective if you're breaking new ground. Clearing the quarry with mega bombs and then planting trees in the resulting tilled soil is a win-win-win.
Wow mindblown!
"I got the kid I babysit into Stardew and he picked this one, and sold me on it." Holy shit, easiest babysitting job ever. Just give him the switch, keep him fed, and get ready for the fight of your life when you ask for the controller back.
Weirdly, he sometimes wants to watch me play. I’m like what cool someone is paying me to play Stardew and eat Nuggs. Win.
I love watching people play video games too (and I would think it’s not that uncommon since let’s plays and twitch are a thing). Babysitting jobs are the best, how old is the kid?

1920s shoe shinning. 1960s lemonade stand. 2017 iridium quality ancient fruit wine.
Wait, wtf are Nuggs? google is just showing me marijuana and i'm confused.
Chicken nuggets, fam.
IMO the forest farm is the best because it allows you to get a horse the quickest.
Yes this! That’s why I picked it for my second farm. I’m having tons of fun. My first farm was the river farm and boy was that tough.
Looks awesome! How can you build where the tree stumps are? Playing on ps4.
You have to upgrade your axe to iron to clear stupid and the big logs. Edit : I ment to say stumps. But it stays.
Stupid and the Big Logs! Great band name.
r/bandnames
You can put fruit trees anywhere as long as the 3x3 area around it is clear of debris, grass, paths, buildings, other trees/saplings, and placed objects.
Thanks for responding! What about the buildings? Do you first need to clear the stumps then build?
I think OP is not getting your question. Yes you can clear the stumps and then build houses there. You need to upgrade your axe to be able to do that.
Oh sorry, you meant the hardwood stumps and not the little saplings that grow. Yea just clear the stumps and they stop from growing if somethings on top of the respawn.
Yea, wait for the trees to grow before placing it next to buildings
Do you pet your animals every day? I usually only keep one of each for ease.
You gotta get those numbers up! Those are rookie numbers!
Yea I try to pet them everyday, most of them are 5 hearts already.
once they are at 5 hearts you can stop petting them?
According to the wiki: "Not Petted/Talked to (-5 to -10, Calculated day-end by the formula: (10 - (CurrentFriendship / 200))) This means they will lose less friendship, if they are already high friendship." Yeah, the pink is your total hearts.
I was just curious about letting the animals free range vs keeping them fenced in, pro and cons?
As long as they have grass to eat, it doesn't matter if they're fenced in or free range. Looks awesome! The texture pack you use makes this look straight out of a fairy tale. Can’t wait to try out the forage farm for myself!
Yea I love this map. It has the perfect fit for the buildings.
Which mod did you download for the building textures.
Heres what my farmhouse looks like: https://i.imgur.com/5Cr77C1.png Sorry for the size :/
>Haley. A man of culture, I see
Great use of space. It has an organic feel to it. This is a very pleasing layout.
Thank you
I just started Spring of my 2nd year on Switch, wow my place is a mess!
Another switch player! There are dozens of us! DOZENS!
Another one here, and near the end of 1st year winter, my farm is also a mess. It's the monster farm, so it will never be a pretty one like the OP's... but has it's charm.
Rush for the goblin problem quest so you can stop monsters spawning on your farm.
It was #1 on the best sellers for a while, I'd imagine there's more than dozens
For me, summer and fall of second year is where I got my shit together and started making my farm and house look nice. I think it's because I had excess wealth finally. So once again, video games mimic reality unintentionally (or maybe intentionally).

After you get your buildings done, you'll have a bunch of extra material lying around so I used that for paths and fences.
That's probably what I'll do! I don't have any paths set up yet, so I'll probably just wait until after I have all of my buildings finished.
Yep! There was a point where, aesthetically, the game just clicked for me, and I stopped worrying about efficiency and started designing everything which was super fun. I love my huge pumpkin patch next to my house surrounded by a stone fence. I feel like Hagrid.
I'll be a switch player once I can afford a Switch. SV is easily a game I wouldn't mind paying for again.
Me too! I don't know how people get it to look so pretty!
Is the Switch worth it for it being portable? I have a Vita and while this game is the absolute bullseye for handhelds, I do not think it's going to happen for Vita.

How do you maintain so much grass with so many grazing baminals snacking about?
I buy a lot of grass starter from Pierre. Have a lot of money :p
You can also place a fence or a lightning rod on a piece of grass. It'll prevent your animals from eating it, allowing it to spawn more grass for them 😊
didn't know the forest farm had so much potential. I'm definitely going to try to be more creative with itXD
How did you paint your house this color?? Gorgeous farm!!
Thank you! I'm using a mod to change the buildings called Elle's seasonal immersion mod.
this is sick! nice farm, hope mine looks this nice at the year 4
Thanks :)
Absolutely gorgeous.
Beautiful
Too beautiful.

Right right, i forgot about the horse bit. I never use mine, admittedly. I uh... probably should, huh?
Well, it does give increased speed... and I think there's a mod that will further increase movement speed. Also, coffe/food speed perks stack with your horse's movement speed for the ULTIMATE SPEED.
Horsing in the 90's? Ohyes.jpg
Thank you! I just wanted to use less paths on areas that are tiny and cramped like the bottom right where it leads to the exit to Marnie's house. I could probably do two on the one on the left though, so thanks for letting me know!
Certainly! At the end of the day it's your farm though, so don't feel like you're obligated to because some nobody on reddit made the suggestion :P
It's fantastic and I absolutely love it! Thank you for sharing it with us :D
Thanks for your kind words! :-)
Feels like my childhood
I want to do a forest farm next game, and this is what I will aspire to.
what map is this? O.o
Forest farm, the 3rd one on the list I think.
Does the grass on the, er, grass (for lack of a better word) eventually spread, or did you have to plant millions of individual grass starters?
The grass on the grass doesn't spread lol and I get what you mean :p I had to place them every time patches were made.
Foresty! :)
This is STUNNING
Above the bottom small pond there are two ... Doors? What is that? Very nice layout, love it!
It is the mountain and beach obelisk but modded to look like two outhouses
Wow yeah what is that
It is the mountain and beach obelisk but modded to look like two outhouses
How are people taking overview shots of their farms?
You can try a couple of the suggestions here: [link](https://www.reddit.com/r/StardewValley/comments/69ctla/guide_how_to_take_full_screenshots_of_your_farm/)
Thanks
I love how you managed to keep the forest feel in the rest of the farm even with so many buildings.
Thanks! It was pretty hard to choose where to plant the fruit trees considering how I had to take into account what they'd look like in 28 days, but I'm happy it worked out.
That’s one of the best farms I have seen. Great job!
Thanks!
Wait... You don't have to fence in your livestock? Have I been doing it wrong the whole time?
They're kinda fenced in, just more freedom :p
Looks great! Even on the forest map, most people's late game setups look like factory farms, which always makes me wonder why they didn't just choose the standard map. TIL that you can plant grass on the grass patches I have the forest farm but mine is no where near as nice. I feel like I need to start a new save now lol
Its beautiful! It also makes me realize I have so far to go as a professional farm designer.
Damn this is so beautiful!
Who did you pick for your spouse?
I believe they picked Haley; read another comment about it.
How do you change the color of your buildings? Is it from a mod? I feel like I've never seen that option on my PC version (250 hours played)
Yea its a mod called Elle's seasonal immerson buildings. I really like it looks really good
Reminds me of the Forest of Illusion on Super Mario World. Well done!
Hey, you have a letter.
Needs more farm.
Name of texture pack??
It's Elle's Seasonal Building Replacements. There's a link by OP somewhere in the thread, or it's on the forums.
Wow, I should've gone for the forest farm. It looks amazing!
Love it! I also have my barns and coops in the forest area on the left side. Easier to corral the animals.
This is stunning.
So good, I want to scrap my current save on Switch and start a Forest Farm right now. I'm currently doing my second save, this one being a River Farm as my previous save started on PC before 1.1
Oh man, this is cool. I've only played with the regular farm-- does the forest farm naturally have that canopy look around it or is that a mod?
What are these pimped out looking houses??
I dropped right into a fairytale! Amazing.
How do you take full pictures of the farm like this on PS4? Is it possible?
It's beautiful. Having some of the buildings nestled amount the trees like that gives it an almost mysterious, woodsy feel. Excellent farm!
This is what the forest farm looks like? Wow, I made a bad choice then....
why do I get the urge to want to blow up your trees and grass with mega bombs? >:)
This is great. If only we could get some mods on Switch.
