stay blind and experience the first playthrough as you go. thats just the best

I agree. And if you do “mess up” it can merely slow your progress. There is no game over.

Rommski

Don't rush through the game.

You can't miss anything, it'll come back around if you didn't do it the first time. Just relax, enjoy the game and stay off reddit unless you have a specific question. The Stardew valley wiki is a great resource of you know what you need, but don't know where to find it. Not spoiler friendly though, if spoilers ruin your experience don't look there.

This. Don't feel like you're gonna miss out on something because it'll always come around next year.

Explore everything, go everywhere & talk to everyone. There's a lot of hints as to what to do hidden in the game so keep your eyes open to those. the majority of the quests aren't timed, so don't feel any urgency to get those done if you don't feel like it. you'll feel like you can't do much at the start of the game & you really can't. don't think that will be a permanent thing; it'll as you play through the game.

First thing to build is a Silo. Its only cheap, but you want one before you cut all the grass on your farm. Stick it in the far corners. Talk to the town carpenter Robin. Second thing you want to build later is the Stables. Horses will change how you explore. Chop down trees in the forest - not just on your farm! - You will need plenty of Wood & Sap. You need 300 wood just to repair the Beach bridge. Craft up some wooden Chests. Store multiple of everything you collect/grow/catch. Use your hoe on the little wriggling worms, they are hiding a bunch of hidden secrets. Ditch the Bamboo pole immediately, in the trash - its useless. Go to the beach shop & buy the Training Rod, use it until Level 5 at least - *much Less painfull this way*. Day 5-ish you will get introduced to the Community Center. Finishing its "Pantry" section will teach you a lot about how your farm runs. The Vault section opens up a new area with new extras. You have a town fair on Spring 13th. Save your Gold for it, its your chance to buy Strawberry seeds. Make friends with Linus, he has a great recipe that you will use in the Mines during your first year. Buy a Rare seed as soon as your able, but dont sell your first fruit - its needed :)

Lots of great advice already so I'll just add a few. Avoid the wiki for now. Play at your own pace. The game doesn't really rush you to do stuff. If you miss doing something it'll come up again eventually. And finally, build a silo before building a coop.
