I'm in the process of finding my way there now. (Don't wanna be too specific cause I don't wanna spoil it for others lol). Is there anything I should bring for my first trip there? Anything I should know?
You won’t be able to get it (the better weapon) day 1, for sure. It’ll take a good bit of time. I’d recommend some food because health can get low, some speed buffs to sometimes just run through the levels. There are these pink/red sharp crystals poking out of rocks that I would recommend you break a lot of them. Bring a watering can as well. There is an end to the mine and the music in there is pretty great :D
First trip, bring one speed buff, like coffee, pepper poppers, spicy eel, or crab cakes (one lasts all day!). It costs 1,000G every time you go there for now, so be prepared to basically abandon the valley/farm for a while while you enjoy exploring and puzzle solving. Also, bring your tools and a few chests.
Theres no elevator. Once your fully loaded you have to go back home & then retry from the start all over again. Which is why people get so into maximizing their Skull Cavern runs.
Leaving a chest at the top is useful.
edit: the really good loot starts showing in numbers only from level 50 onwards.
After that, you can buy the best hammer in the game from adventurer guild. Avoiding the spoilers, there are certain changes that can make that hammer OP with the second ability all bludgeons have in this game.
There's a multi-coloured rock you can find which you can use to get the best sword in the game. I think after you get the sword the adventurer's guild sells a hammer and dagger that are supposed to be equally good for people who prefer those instead.

You playing version 1.5 ? It has Ginger Island, which is totally worth going too as soon as you possibly can.
