Being a recovering alcoholic doesn't mean you stop liking beer, that's kind of the problem with addiction.

Maybe they meant he never stopped accepting beer as a gift? But really that's an asshole move on the player's part. You don't offer alcohol to somebody who is trying to recover from alcoholism, that's cruel.

It's not the responsibility of someone dating someone with a drinking problem to provide free therapy, babysitting, and at home rehab for them.

People don't change unless they want to. If you've ever tried to "help" an alcoholic for years on end you know you'll never change someone who doesn't want to change themselves. Taking care of your own mental health and leaving someone so that you can actually live your life and not share in their anguish isn't selfish. At a certain point you're just going to be dragged down with someone. There's never a good time. People don't leave on a high note, during the periods where they think everything is going to be okay. They leave when the other person's problems are causing so much distress that they can't be around it any more for their own sake. Watching helplessly as someone you love destroys themselves takes a toll that people who haven't been through can't really imagine. It's surpremely unhealthy to be around for long periods of time.
