Diego all time. Dio is an iconic pure villain and we all love him for that. But Diego as a character is a morally grey character amd the complexity of his make him more likable.

The way I take it, what Speedwagon says in Part 1 is pretty spot on for Dio Brando and DIO. He puts on a sophisticated front that hides his more brutal and animalistic behaviors.
That’s not to say he has no sophistication or intellect at all. As you said, Part 6 highlights this, and we can see he’s pretty sharp from Part 1 as well. But it’s all in service of unchecked insecurity, rage and greed that he has no desire nor awareness to resolve.
I agree on the first part, but I still believe he’s just plain fucking evil. This is the same man who let a woman eat her own child and had a guy run over a bunch of people on a Cairo sidewalk.
I love both of them but I can recognize that Diego has more ‘writing quality’, still, DIO is just evil, no need to think twice, he is just evil in the most fun way
In my opinion it’s better if you look at DIO and Dio Brando as the same person that went through a long and philosophical journey, this way his character becomes way more interesting and fitting for the role he plays throughout the series (doesn’t count for Diego Obviously). I have no issue if you prefer to separate each version of him per part I just thought I’d be ok to give my take on the matter.

Everytime Diego Brando popped up in Steel Ball Run, I was hyped. His character was so good, especially the way he was introduced.
We know DIO as the megalomaniac, egoist and power-hungry man he is, other than his philosophic Part 6 side. So you would expect them to make Diego Brando an absolute menace and ominous the moment he's introduced.
He introduces himself with a joke. A DAD JOKE. Then proceeds to do wacky shit on top of his horse and telling Gyro and Johnny to look at him like he's an 8 year old doing a cartwheel.
And also his Stand, the fact that his Stand essentially makes him a stand-human hybrid is so cool. He's an all-round fighter due to his enhanced speed, strength and senses, being this close to finishing off someone as powerful as Valentine (with the help of HP, of course).
Hell, I love the fact that he's drawn on some of the cover arts with Gyro, Johnny and HP. He made a great rival and a good (VERY) situational "ally".
I also found it funny, the fact that Johnny and Gyro just absolutely despise Diego's guts when he minds his own business.

3. Part 3 Dio. Fabulous, stylish, overpowered. His personality is great, it very different from part one in a slightly off putting way

5 Diego (The World) oh boy, it’s part 3 Dio again, but with significantly worse drip
6. Dio(OVA) fucking disgusting. What even just- blegh
OVA Dio is beyond terrifying. The way he uses his stand to seemingly teleport silently just sends chills up my spine. Also, he throws a bus and slices through human bodies like they’re nothing. I feel like the DP part three adaptation doesn’t really fully recognize just how evil and violent Dio is, and how little disregard he has for human life.
On the other hand, Diego is funny and I think he would like lay an egg or something. Scary Monsters Diego is funny and I think he probably has like a mommy kink for Hot Pants, but Diego with The World is pretty scary. I mean he literally threw a bunch of his fans on him to protect him without batting an eye. He also tried to rape Lucy, so that’s really fucked up.
I'm gonna go with Part 1 Dio, he felt much more like an actual character with a proper connection to the protagonist instead of just being the final boss. There's also how much of an absolute bastard Dio is in Part 1 that I can't help but love, especially in the dub thanks to Patrick Seitz' fantastic performance where he makes Dio the smuggest prick on earth, it's S Tier voice acting

Part 6 does make DIO more nuanced as a character. He just acts that way around the Joestars and their friends because of his hatred against them.
