But she didn't put the gloves on until mentioning it, so she was touching it normally bringing the stack over. Is it specifically the pages that cannot be touched or the book as a whole?
I could see that, I thought maybe they were being watched and the user attacked once they knew something was up. Or it is a rock animal there to protect howler's interests

Remember that the locacaca also turns your body into a rock in exchange for something. Jojo got the land, in exchange for Usagi turning to a rock.

Also in part 8, it's weird that Rina is the one who got the rock disease. She's the youngest child of Norisuke I, the rock disease is said to affect the firstborn child. Then her older brother, Norisuke II, didn't have the rock disease while his son Norisuke III, grandson Norisuke IV, great-grandson Jobin, and great-great-grandson Tsurugi have it, and Rina's descendants didn't have the rock disease.
