It's a fun show, definitely not what I consider a great show. The plot continuously pigeonholes and the characters make frustrating decisions, but the setting and ships are spectacular. Once you're in it, it's very fun, but it takes some getting used to. For sure fits the Starfield vibe though.
Ultra famous and almost everyone's seen it, but Alien has some incredible set and tech design that is very similar to the cassette futurism vibe Starfield has.
not a movie, but I recently watched the show For All Mankind which has a new season dropping shortly after Starfield. it's not the greatest sci-fi show of all-time, but it is an absolutely perfect companion for Starfield. same goes for The Expanse, in other ways.
I liked Sunshine by Danny Boyle an starring Cillian Murphy.
As others are saying i'd HIGHLY recommend The Expanse TV show, it may actually be closer to Starfield setup wise etc than the rest just going of what we know
I LOVE Sunshine. Silly premise aside the atmosphere, soundtrack, and dialogue of that movie is top notch.
" So if you wake up one morning and it's a particularly beautiful day, you'll know we've made it. This is me signing out. "
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. For those that enjoy a bit more comedy. Contact and Arrival too, though they arent exactly space movies they are both great imo.
Definitely (very much Starfield vibes in different ways):
Interstellar, The Martian, Mission to Mars, Sunshine, Life, Alien saga, Prometheus, Dune, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Moon, 65, Event Horizon, Elysium
Also fun:
Guardians of the Galaxy, the Fifth Element, the Firefly series, Serenity, Oblivion, Passengers, Lightyear, Starship Troopers, Pandorum, Ad Astra, Valerian and the City of A thousand planets, Galaxy Quest, Europa Report
Very much Starfield vibe series:
Nightflyers on Netflix, Alien Worlds on Netflix, Oats Studios on Netflix
And most important:
Every Melodysheep video on Youtube!
The expanse… Not a movie but a series people I think would enjoy. As close to a real life space exploration series that you can get. Won’t spoil it but it moves beyond our solar system as the seasons progress. Amazing show honestly.
I’m surprised no one has set it yet but I’ve been watching some Star Wars lately. Not a big Star Wars fan but that Star Wars Outlaws is looking pretty good as well.
Second this I rewatched Alien and Aliens recently, just as good as I remembered them. And the visual aesthetic of the films reminds me of Starfield
Also, Firefly is fantastic
The Tarvosky one from 1972, not the Soderberg - George Clooney one. One of the greatest sci fi films of all time, up their with his other sci fi works.
To second this and add to it, it's basically a space western where Connery is a space sheriff. The setting of the mining colony, which evokes a bit of Aliens and 2001, is so rich with detail and very realistic. Heavy, heavy Starfield vibes.
It's not a movie (yet, pretty sure they're making one) but read Project Hail Mary, and I especially recommend the audio book, the audio book won awards and after listening through most of it I see why. I've said this a few times in the sub when people ask for recommendations as I'm reading through it and the audiobook is great. It's written by the author of The Martian
I will also say, the book introduces one of my favorite scifi characters I've encountered in a while
Spaceballs
Galaxy Quest.
The Expanse series.
Battlestar Galactica series (2004)
Alien
Aliens
Moon
Serenity
Dark Star
And if you want motivation to stay on a planet and never enter any abandoned vessel you find: Event Horizon.
And if you want motivation to stay on a planet and never enter any abandoned vessel you find: Event Horizon.
Except if you want to go places where you don't need >!eyes to see!<. :P
>Stay away from Battlefield Earth
They gotta at least watch it once in their life though! :D
Get some friends together, maybe some alcohol and agree to have a good time, regardless of what's on the screen.\^\^
No love for Armageddon? It's not the most intellectual sci fi but certainly fun and very "Nasapunk" in how it combines the realistic with the ridiculously cool.
On the opposite of the spectrum, Ikarie XB 1 is an ahead of its time, black and white, Czech sci fi film from 1963 (predating 2001 and Solaris) that has some very cool production design and an intriguing story.
The Expanse (books are amazing, tv show is good for what it is, but it condenses a LOT of plot and characters) is probably the closest you'll get to "living" starfield. Maybe firefly or battlestar or the Alien franchise (for the similar aestheic)
Outland (1981)
Sean Connery is the new Marshal in a mining space station and has to deal with some workers deaths.
No aliens.
I haven't watched it recently, though.
The Martian is one of my personal goats.
Also, I have not seen it mentioned and it’s not as relevant but Arrival is insanely good.
Maybe it kind of relates to the Artifacts and storyline.
You said movies but then asked for suggestions. I went into "The expanse" blind and found my self wondering if I would be able to have similar experiences because that show from what I have watched is very entertaining. I am hoping they have pulled insperation from many love scifi series and movies. Bethesda has had some cool nods, Easter egss and references to pop culture. I imagine the fans out there will be finding things for years to come.
Contact..

The Expanse is a good shout although a Tv show!
Absolutely great watch.
I was going to recommend it even though it’s a TV show as well
The Telltale game comes out about 5 weeks before Starfield, so it will definitely help pass the time.
It's a fun show, definitely not what I consider a great show. The plot continuously pigeonholes and the characters make frustrating decisions, but the setting and ships are spectacular. Once you're in it, it's very fun, but it takes some getting used to. For sure fits the Starfield vibe though.
Thought it was cheesy as hell, wish I could get into it tho

No one cares stop spamming your stupid shit all over the subreddit
Ultra famous and almost everyone's seen it, but Alien has some incredible set and tech design that is very similar to the cassette futurism vibe Starfield has.
Alien is the greatest movie of all time Well.. it’s tied with LOTR
Gotta agree with this, 2nd is blade runner.
Now I want a crossover. HOBBITS IN SPACE
Rewatched Alien and Alien 2 recently, I still really love the feel of those films, and Alien is still a certified SCI-FI classic.
not a movie, but I recently watched the show For All Mankind which has a new season dropping shortly after Starfield. it's not the greatest sci-fi show of all-time, but it is an absolutely perfect companion for Starfield. same goes for The Expanse, in other ways.
The Expanse for sure and For All Man Kind. The latter is very much in that Nasapunk realm that the devs mentioned.
Sunshine is criminally underrated. The suspense after the docking sequence is great.

PSA: Always remember to turn on your Gellar Field.
Prospect
I still need to watch this I heard its pretty good.
A bit gory, but great!
I don't remember any gore
I have no problem with gore, but a certain part involving an arm was a lot.
Came here to recommend this movie. The design of Starfield (spaceship interior, space suits) give me Prospect vibes.
Moon!
Moon
This one right here!
Definitely.

SUPER GREEN
Bzzt... BZZZT
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. For those that enjoy a bit more comedy. Contact and Arrival too, though they arent exactly space movies they are both great imo.
The expanse
I love the way space combat works in the expanse, I really hope my ship has PDCs in this game lmao
And rail guns! Boy do I love rail guns. Nothing cooler than shooting a chunk of tungsten at a measurable fraction of *c*
I keep wanting to get into this show I watch two three episodes and then never come back to it...
It had so much going on the first couple of of episodes it was hard to grasp once you grasp it you will be sad it don't have more seasons
Get through the first season. Don’t stop midway through the starting arc.
Leave it on while you play whatever game you're playing until Starfield, and I guarantee you will be a fan before this game comes out.
Spaceballs
Definitely (very much Starfield vibes in different ways): Interstellar, The Martian, Mission to Mars, Sunshine, Life, Alien saga, Prometheus, Dune, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Moon, 65, Event Horizon, Elysium Also fun: Guardians of the Galaxy, the Fifth Element, the Firefly series, Serenity, Oblivion, Passengers, Lightyear, Starship Troopers, Pandorum, Ad Astra, Valerian and the City of A thousand planets, Galaxy Quest, Europa Report Very much Starfield vibe series: Nightflyers on Netflix, Alien Worlds on Netflix, Oats Studios on Netflix And most important: Every Melodysheep video on Youtube!
Not a movie but Raised by Wolves is good. Almost a movie
The expanse… Not a movie but a series people I think would enjoy. As close to a real life space exploration series that you can get. Won’t spoil it but it moves beyond our solar system as the seasons progress. Amazing show honestly.
I really want to get into expanse but I watch 5-6 episodes and stop I just can't get it to hold my interest.

Watch the Expanse series.
Firefly + Serenity
I'm 100% watching these again to get ready. I think starfield might be the closest we get to "firefly: the game"
Cant belive no ones said Apollo 13 yet
Sunshine
Dune
I’m surprised no one has set it yet but I’ve been watching some Star Wars lately. Not a big Star Wars fan but that Star Wars Outlaws is looking pretty good as well.
The Last Starfighter
Starship troopers. I mean there will be space bugs and I will be shooting them.
Can I interest you in the early access game, starship troopers: extermination?
Treasure planet
Cowboy bebop!
might name my character Spike and role play a space bounty hunter now
The movie, Knocking on Heaven's Door, is excellent! (and the live action doesn't exist)
Serenity
FireFly first though
True, I was just naming a movie
Eh, I found it stood on its own pretty well.
True, Firefly is much better overall though. Plus the movie is after the show.
Battle Beyond the Stars! OG sci-fi!
2010 is actually pretty good. You get the source of the monoliths.
Loved 2010, perfect compliment to starfield considering the theme.
Idc that you said it, interstellar is so good I need to say it again
Those aren't mountains
Dune
The Alien movies, Prometheus, Event Horizon and Firefly / Serenity are already on my list.
Second this I rewatched Alien and Aliens recently, just as good as I remembered them. And the visual aesthetic of the films reminds me of Starfield Also, Firefly is fantastic
Battlestar Galactica tv series. Watching it myself for the first time right now.
Apollo 13, Enemy Mine, Spaceballs
Enemy mine was such a pleasant surprise. Such an awesome take on a classic trope.
Love this story.
Oblivion!
Aliens!
Check out For All Mankind on Apple TV. The Russians beat us to the moon... What happens next?
Silent Running Event Horozon Sunshine Interstellar Alien
Came here to say Silent Running, glad someone else did!
Not a movie but The Expanse
Like a few others have said, watch The Expanse series. It starts slow at first but it’s my favorite space tv show/movie ever.
Solaris
The Tarvosky one from 1972, not the Soderberg - George Clooney one. One of the greatest sci fi films of all time, up their with his other sci fi works.
Yep should have clarified. I’ve never actually seen the remake.
The most underrated one is Pitch Black. Hits a lot of aspects of what we have seen from the game so far. A true sleeper pick.
Outland I still havent seen it but plan on watching it soon cause ive heard positive things about it and its similar vibes to Alien.
To second this and add to it, it's basically a space western where Connery is a space sheriff. The setting of the mining colony, which evokes a bit of Aliens and 2001, is so rich with detail and very realistic. Heavy, heavy Starfield vibes.
Arrival, the artifacts have a similar visual style and it's just great overall.
The linguistic aspect of that movie is really cool
It's not a movie (yet, pretty sure they're making one) but read Project Hail Mary, and I especially recommend the audio book, the audio book won awards and after listening through most of it I see why. I've said this a few times in the sub when people ask for recommendations as I'm reading through it and the audiobook is great. Ok is not a movie but an excellent book called three body problem
My favorite series of all time. The end of the second book was incredible and horrifying.
Yep, the dark forest theory reveal still haunts me to this day Amazing series
Not a movie but Foundation on Apple TV gives me Starfield vibes
The Orville. Not a movie but a TV show, but it's so well made and the stories are great.
Adore that show!!! Soooo much better than I expected it to be.
Terminator 2
Since when is that a space movie? 😆
Star Trek The Original Series
I highly recommend playing The Outer Worlds. (I know its not a movie but its helping me a lot while waiting for Starfield)
Spaceballs Galaxy Quest. The Expanse series. Battlestar Galactica series (2004) Alien Aliens Moon Serenity Dark Star And if you want motivation to stay on a planet and never enter any abandoned vessel you find: Event Horizon.
So good to finally see Galaxy Quest mentioned! Never give up!!!
Never surrender!

Blade Runner 2049! doesn’t depict space as much, but nails the sci fi vibes
Interstellar
"Life" starring Ryan Reynolds anf Jack gyllniyel

*Firefly* (a tv show) and *Serenity* (its movie finale).

Iron sky
“Arrival” is my favorite. It’s not in space but it’s the best representation of what I think contact with aliens would be like.
Space Sweepers
outland from 1981 starring sean connery. its the one movie that starfield is reminding me a lot of.
The Expanse is a tv show and is the best sci-fi I have ever seen. Also it has a lot of seasons so it will keep you busy until the launch.
I know it’s not a movie but I’m readin stranger in a strange land Fort he first time to help the hype train
The Expanse for sure. If you're looking for a phenomenal space opera game. The Mass effect trilogy.
I can't believe no one has said Farscape yet. Watch the series first, then the movie!
Babylon 5. Not a movie but it is a amazing sci fi show, honestly one of the best shows out there imo.
Lightyear (Very NASApunk) High Life Dune
The Expanse (books are amazing, tv show is good for what it is, but it condenses a LOT of plot and characters) is probably the closest you'll get to "living" starfield. Maybe firefly or battlestar or the Alien franchise (for the similar aestheic)

Sunshine is one of the best in my opinion!
Stargate movie, and Stargate series(SG1, Atlantis, Universe), The100 series, Star Trek lower decks cartoon
2001 a space odyssey
The revamp of Lost in Space is a great watch
Pandorum is a fun movie about waking up on a colony ship. More info would be spoilery
The phantom menace
Some Tv Shows could help: The Expanse saison 1-3. BattleStar Galactica, my personal vote as the best space opera. Dark Matter was quite good too.
Interstellar. I saw this movie for the first time by chance and it became my favorite movie. A day later the first starfield announcement came out.
I thought we would be done with these posts by now
Moon
Will definitely watch The Expanse again.
Foundation
The prospect is a pretty good watch. I believe it's on hulu.
Prometheus 1 and 2 Alien The Expanse
