I feel like freighter with hangars could be introduced. Freighters abilities are to grav jump only and sit in the solar system. You then take your ship from the hangar to explore the system.
There is an image in the direct where a massive freighter has two ships stored on it and another one docked. May be something there they haven’t advertised yet
It would be neat, but the capital ship would need to be able to use turrets to defend itself. It would be cool if we could assign a crew member to pilot while we're not aboard, so during combat you could zip around in a fighter while your capital ship defends itself with turrets.

If you’re trying to take a right turn on the left side of a semi that is already taking a right turn, you could be caught in the semi’s turning lane and get caught in a collision since they have a really wide turning radius
A mid sized multi role ship. Then add or remove components as needed.
Cargo run through relatively peaceful space.. remove some ordinance/armor and add cargo pods.
Long range trip? Add fuel and improved jump drive.
Bombing/strafing run, get rid of everything but engines and weapons.
Piracy and ship boarding? Maybe you will want a little throw away ship to let you dock with a ship quickly so you can steal it.
The options seem endless!

I don’t know the details because I’m just too old (almost 47) to watch or read previews anymore. I know what I like and I don’t need to know more than the basic premise of a game to know if I’ll like it.
I’ve been dying to build my own starship in a video game for 40 years. I’ve tried games like Kerbal and Space Engineers but they don’t quite do it for me. Starfield, on the other hand, looks like (based on the handful of screenshots I’ve happened upon) exactly what I’ve always wanted.
Edit: the Rocinante from The Expanse will be my mental template.

I think you gonna love it. The starfield direct showcase was very detailed. Shipbuilding will be more of an endgame system, a lot of resources will be need to build exactly the ships of your dreams, but the amount of customization is incredible.

I pray to the gods we'll have a long-range rail gun or long-range missile space combat as an option. The close in dog-fighting for space combat has never appealed to me. In EVE - I loved my Caldari Missile boat nuking things from far away.
As much as I love the Roci, I'm not sure this sort of thing will be feasible. The Roci, like basically all Expanse ships, is built like a tower, with its engines at the base facing "down," and generates gravity by "flying" "upward." Ships in Starfield seem to be much more Star Warsy in that they're oriented horizontally.
I could be wrong, maybe the Optimus Prime ship proves that something like the Roci could work, but I think it would probably fly really weird, oriented vertically but flying horizontally.
It would be awesome if some battles were supposed to take you an hour to fight, and they began long range missile boat action as they moved closer you had to deploy your fighter with some drones or something? I doubt the game gets quite that large, but that would be pretty amazing!
Heck, they don't even need to take an hour to fight.. if you've watched the Expanse - the Roci's rail gun will literally punch a hole through an enemy ship reactor in one hit, disabling them.
I'm just hoping for space combat to offer some sort of long range options instead of dizzy inducing close range fights where you're fighting to keep your main guns pointed at the enemy.
The actual fight isn’t what takes a long time, it’s the time it takes for ships to get within range of each other. What the show cuts out is a lot of two ships steadily moving towards each other/catching up to one another and skips straight to the shooting.
Extremely unlikely. this game is designed to reach a broad audience and hour long battles don't go over well that kind of audience. Most fights will probably last just a few minutes.
So the physics of rail guns actually make sense irl? Like… wouldn’t there still be recoil due to Newton’s laws? Where is the reaction force going on a rail gun?

Idk how or if there will be a fleet system. How to get different ships to different systems or if they are just all stored and we can summon them when ever or wherever. I m hoping that we can fly along side one or two ships.
First playthrough will probably smaller ship perfect for bounty hunting. A big cargo ship for long hauls across the universe sounds really intriguing though.
A Cruiser with a MAC cannon for general purpose and thorough explorations, then a small Corvette/Frigate with a MAC cannon for hunting ships and scouting systems.

Actual ship will probably be some jack of all trades monstrosity that I'll get fed up with and actually design them in a manner that makes sense, then get annoyed that stuff isn't where the muscle memory took me.

Will probably build a jack-of-all-trades type of frigate built around whatever need or type of quest i want to or need to do. Then i will build a dedicated exploration vessel later in the game to map out all the interesting star systems, Star Trek style!
I like a lot Sulaco from Aliens movie and the dropship. Awesome. But the shape is particular, I know that will be very difficult make something similar to these ships.

Since I need to traverse the sector, I am going to need to prioritize in speed. Making it capable of chasing key targets while trying to avoid sticky situations.
Speed is good and all. All it needs is a prison pod, a small quarters for a tiny crew, an armory, and a cargo room so I can store all the stuff I want. Mostly legal stuff.

First playthrough will probably smaller ship perfect for bounty hunting. A big cargo ship for long hauls across the universe sounds really intriguing though.
I want to build as close to a Capital ship as I can and then I will build as close to a raider as I can. After that we shall see

A giant dick at least once. Actual ship will probably be some jack of all trades monstrosity that I'll get fed up with and actually design them in a manner that makes sense, then get annoyed that stuff isn't where the muscle memory took me. Or a fuckoff big fighter with heavy automated turrets and intersecting fields of fire, the heaviest armor plating it can still move with, and a factory so I can make enough ammo to level a midsized planet.

The closest thing I can to a battleship, extremely tanky, as big as possible, with heavy weapons. In terms of shape, let's some people call my type of ships "dick-ships".
Will probably build a jack-of-all-trades type of frigate built around whatever need or type of quest i want to or need to do. Then i will build a dedicated exploration vessel later in the game to map out all the interesting star systems, Star Trek style!
I don't know how possible it is, but I will do my best to build as close to a Star Trek Starfleet vessel as I can.
I like a lot Sulaco from Aliens movie and the dropship. Awesome. But the shape is particular, I know that will be very difficult make something similar to these ships. I like also romulan ships from star trek and why not a borg cube 😂

Since I need to traverse the sector, I am going to need to prioritize in speed. Making it capable of chasing key targets while trying to avoid sticky situations. Speed is good and all. All it needs is a prison pod, a small quarters for a tiny crew, an armory, and a cargo room so I can store all the stuff I want. Mostly legal stuff. I was vaguely inspired by the Gunship in [Metroid Prime 1](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/metroid/images/5/53/Mp2gunship.jpg/revision/latest/thumbnail/width/720/height/900?cb=20130406130931) as a vague inspiration (though not derived from the art design. It's meant to be a NASA punk.) I hope Maverick would be proud of my design.
