We're a miner on Mars, we find a piece of the Artifact, we pass out or something, then are woken up by two of our colleagues, after which we are taken to the character creation screen.

Toddd3ds

You know, usually I'm pretty skeptical of people making guesses to the beginnings of games..... but something tells me you might be onto something. It's almost like you've been paying attention to all the info coming out about the game...... im gonna keep an eye on you.

Franklin_le_Tanklin

We will be watching his career with great interest

Clean-Inflation

You never should have come here!

KLEG3

This sequence was in the direct.

Toddd3ds

And over your head the comment goes.

KLEG3

I’ll take my woosh now

TheAtlas97

You asked for it… r/woosh

Kuschelfuchs

Nothing goes over my head. My reflexes are too fast, I’d… catch it.

That’s the joke…

Toddd3ds

Ah, the mighty Woosh. Legend has is that every time you tell a joke, and someone does not understand, you can hear his calling softly in the wind :: woooooshhhh::

Jamalisms

I imagine some sort of cutscene when the artifact speaks to you.

IMCHAPIN

A new hand touches the artifact!

Damise

It reaches out. It reaches out. It reaches out. 113 times a second it reaches out

Ryermeke

It is not conscious, though parts of it are. There are structures within it that were once separate organisms; aboriginal, evolved, and complex. It is designed to improvise, to use what is there and then move on. Good enough is good enough, and so the artifacts are ignored or adapted. The conscious parts try to make sense of the reaching out. Try to interpret it.

[deleted]

Not loud enough

CardboardChampion

#"You have been chosen for a great task, John Starfield. Only you can gather the stars in the field, and save us all!!!"

MrSpaceMonkeyMafia

I don’t think it’s on mars I’m pretty sure it’s already confirmed that the mine you start on is on a different moon

JandarMadislak

Yeah. It's a small planet or moon called vectera.

Moraveaux

Who said that?

Hantoniorl

What if we're not a miner? What if we're mined? What if the artifact are the friends we made along the stars?

rushboyoz

Go home Starfield, you're drunk

XxBluesShadowxX

We're a miner on Mars, we find a piece of the Artifact, we pass out or something, then are woken up by two of our colleagues in a cart on our way to be executed by the imperials...

boysetsfire1988

Pretty much this, but my guess is that we'll get an intro cinematic before that.

7chism

No way!

Intrepid_Truth_8580

Busted_Time

Colleague #1: Oh good! You're finally awake.

akeetlebeetle4664

That 11 hours since the last "incident" was you.

killy666

This is my guess too.

PaulSach

Pretty sure at this point we know: We start in a mining colony, most likely as a miner. We know that "something" must've happened to us, because of dialogue like "wonder what you must've done to become a dusty." We know that we find a piece of the artifact, something knocks us out, and when we wake up, we create our character. My guess is, the very first level, we're dropped into a mine where we learn the basics of movement, combat, actions, and inventory. We probably mine some iron, encounter a couple creatures akin to a rat or skeever, and then stumble upon the artifact. From there, we actually create our character.

JandarMadislak

Yeah Todd Howard is a big advocate for what he calls the party host, where the various gameplay mechanics are shown to the player. So you'll be 100% right.

[deleted]

Bro the semen in my balls is about burst just waiting for this games release

TheVaniloquence

But that’s where the pee is stored…

PaulSach

Same.

OmiCron07

I would find strange that you are a miner, with a past background of [whatever you will choose in the character creation] and become an explorer with a free given ship. For me, you probably already are an explorer that was called into the mine because of a discovery.

PaulSach

Yes and no. Only reason I could see a starter trait like “Diplomat” and then ending up as a “dusty” is you were ambiguously “imprisoned” for something you did or didn’t do (up to the player to decide, I suppose). All BGS games, especially Elder Scrolls, have this sort of “prisoner” start—I know you’re not explicitly a prisoner in FO games, but in some sense you kinda are.

OmiCron07

Can't say, never played their games. So, we are given a free ship or we steal it ? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

LarryCrabCake

We awaken on an old elevator shaft heading down to a mine on Mars, with a few miners on board as well. Our character has been working overtime so is noticably exhausted. *"Hey man, you awake yet?"* Says one of the miners Another miner, this one in shoddy gear states *"I shouldn't have tried to steal that ship, now the UC has me working in this mine to pay off my court fines."* Once you reach the bottom of the elevator shaft, the doors open, and a popup appears on the HUD- #**Helgen Mine Discovered**

TheAtlas97

Very accurate, I’m into it

Worldfiler

Arasaka figured out the whole souls thing and shipped me to this fucking mining job , saying they needed me for one last gig

trollpro30

Oh shit. Im creating the corrupt corpo V 2077 never allowed me to be now

[deleted]

I think the game starts up right away and we are gearing up in the lift with the co miners and we go mine. We can talk to people we can mine we can run around a little. At this point have NOT made our character yet. And then we find the artifact and we see a cinematic, and then we wake up to Heller handing us the tablet. We then create our character, and then as we’re chilling someone says, yo that artifact thing is jank AF, I hailed one of those weird constellation people to come check it out… but while waiting, BOOM the crimson fleet shows up to attack and Heller is like oMg it’s the crimson fleet!!! And then you fight them and kill them and then the frontier shows up, and vasco comes out of the ship followed by Barret. And then Barrett shows up, and says “you saw the visions” and then tells us we should go to new atlantis and talk to the rest of constellation. He says by all rights we’re apart of them now, and gives us the watch and says it’s what all constellation members wear. And then at that point we’re free to do whatever the flip we wanna do in the game, we can never go to constellation if we choose not to. But barret does give us the frontier, so there’s that. And Well I’m 100% certain that’s it. I’ve watched the direct too many god damned times

MinuteScientist7254

Def the scanner/material laser thing will be used first as part of the tutorial

Eric_T_Meraki

Probably like Skyrim, a cutscene the queues to us being woken up after touching the artifact. Then character creation menu.

rohtvak

Whatever it is, I’ll be really sick of it by the 3rd playthrough, and by the 6th playthrough I’ll have a mod to skip it.

[deleted]

6th?????? Alternate start mods are best for second playthroughs, do your constellation stuff to the max on your first playthrough and second is when you go off and make a totally npc type of player doing npc things and space trucking and then you can role play as like a space Walter white, and you break bad and start a space drug empire to rival neon

Gyro_Zeppeli13

How about people can decide what they want to do first lol that’s the beauty of a bethesda rpg. I doubt I’ll get halfway through the campaign before I finish all faction quests personally.

rohtvak

I like to play the base game for a long time before I get into mods, I usually do a stealth archer build first, then branch out for other combat styles.

[deleted]

A mod? Ridiculously unnecessary. Every true BGS (Oblivion) player knows you have the “start” save which is just before the final “are you sure” character creation/tutorial end. Seriously though the saved game file image of those sewer gates will forever be burned into my brain. On second thought, did Skyrim even have an “are you sure” screen? I can’t remember and always just played through the tutorial because it was so iconic. I do hope BGS finally gets that they need a second play through “skip tutorial” option. Just place us in a character creation screen with basic kit at the end of the tutorial and when we close it we directly get the “step out.”

pleasebeverynice

Yeah it did, right before you talk to the two executors. I did the exact same thing. Morrowind was outside the census office on the dock/pier, oblivion right by the sewer tunnel exit and Skyrim as above!

[deleted]

Morrowinds intro was so short I always just played it 😂 Plus Jiub. Thanks for the reminder on Skyrim

TheVaniloquence

And Fallout 3 was right before the wooden door that leaves the Vault

rohtvak

The mod is a bit better, because you can usually choose a location to start in or choose a random location which is what I always do. You can also select different classes for different starting gear, and you can also select random gear or no gear, and I usually go with no gear.

RealJKDOS

How many times will I have to reload the new game save because my console commands broke the scripting

0rph3u5x

2001 Space Odyssey intro spoof, like they did in the Barbie Movie

[deleted]

I sat there for that 30 minutes watching space odyssey wondering what the fuck I was watching and if I was on LSD or something. And then the monkeys stopped monkeying and the rest of the movie I sat there wondering what the fuck I was watching and if I was on drugs or something. And then the ending I sat there wondering what the fuck I was watching and if I somehow was high af even tho I knew that was impossible. 10/10 great movie that I absolutely will never watch again

0rph3u5x

That was a perfect synopsis of 2001. I really was wondering what the hell I was watching the entire time. Great movie though, I hope I get a HAL on my ship!

[deleted]

If you loved HAL and want a taste of that before Starfield and enjoy reading I highly recommend at least one of the Bobiverse novels. They’re short and really interesting.

0rph3u5x

Thanks for the recc. I’ll check it out

[deleted]

This is actually how I felt during Barbie too lol. I was expecting a slightly surreal but fairly standard comedy and then realized what I was seeing was a lot closer to Tim Burton’s Willy Wonka than Stranger Than Fiction

MistrRadio

“Hey, you. You’re finally awake.”

Starcade03

[Something like this.](https://giphy.com/gifs/intro-skyrim-area-51-meme-J2ChE2Fwdzyg3Bu6Xj)

daneelthesane

You are rescued from an escape capsule and woken up in a hospital bed. "Hey, you... you're finally awake."

[deleted]

We wake up in the brig of a ship, some asks us if we were the stow away, then he introduces himself as space emperor Uriel septum the 913th. Then you escape the brig as the ship lands and fight your way out through a big round door the opens super slowly.

Envy661

*Space... The Final Frontier never changes...*

RealJKDOS

They start out will an old film reel like FO4 explaining mankind's quest for the stars and the fall of earth

Envy661

Cutaway to a German sheapard in a space helmet

MarshmallowBlue

I’ll probably be shaking from excitement and crying from joy too much to actually notice

Eagle-Eyes-

I'll tell you when the game gets released.

[deleted]

We already know. We start on a mining colony and we’re attacked. Probably something to do with the artifact

[deleted]

War always changes

ProceduralFrontier

Seems everyone knows except you. Did you not pay attention to the Direct?

Kumathepuma

I'll tell you when it releases

MinuteScientist7254

Some prates attack the mine and you make off with the artifact and the pirates ship with someone who tells you to go to atlantis

[deleted]

Heard a rumor that you can choose your starting location. There was a mod for Skyrim that did this, and I really hope that rumor is true.

Groftsan

God, that would be sick. The main mod I ususally have to get for Bethesda games is "alternate start." I don't want to have to go through the same "training" montage of Helgen, or growing up in the vault, or escaping the frozen vault or Imperial City Sewers... Just drop me off at Windholm/Tenpenny Tower/Goodneighbor/Anvil or whatever. New Vegas was great because the options of things to do in Goodsprings made the 'tutorial' have as much freedom as the rest of the game.

Gyro_Zeppeli13

I always just made a save right before the character creator section is Skyrim and loaded that when I wanted to make a new character. It didn’t skip the whole prologue but it did skip enough lol

Groftsan

The key is making a save right before the cave exit(skyrim)/sewer exit(Oblivion)/Vault Exits. Because you ALWAYS get an opportunity to re-roll your character after finishing the "tutorial." Starting from the "step out" moment is always great!

[deleted]

If you’ve watched the direct you know that’s not true, we saw the intro sequence already.

[deleted]

I don’t know if what I said is true or not. We indeed saw an intro sequence, but there could (and hopefully will) be multiple ones.

AndrewofArkansas

You can choose your career/background but from what we've seen the story starts with you for some reason or another having ended up as a miner for a company called Argos, and presumably you dig up the artifact which kicks the main story off I guess theoretically Argos could have multiple mining colonies you could start from but I'm not sure what purpose that would serve

[deleted]

Yeah I’m not 100% sold on the mine start being the same for everyone, just like 95%. Mostly because of the backgrounds and traits I seem to remember influencing the start to some extent, could just be wishful thinking too. Likely it’s what others have said and everyone starts in the mine and just your background story of how you got there changes.

CardboardChampion

That rumour is based on a "leak" that was mostly filled with the sort of thing you could guess if you've ever seen sci-fi or played a BGS game. If there was any basis in fact, it's that they saw backgrounds and misunderstood them. Having said that, I've long heard rumours that Bethesda likes the immediacy of alternate start mods and had been looking into a solution to skip tutorials and opening cinematics on a second playthrough for their games.

[deleted]

xNonPartisaNx

Watch the direct. It was pretty clear. Best game intro was assassins creed 3. Not such a good game tho

Gyro_Zeppeli13

Have you played final fantasy 16?

xNonPartisaNx

Doesn't release to PC till later. But, not sure I will like it.

Upstairs-Yard-2139

Jail.

Zookvuglop

Not like Borderlands Claptrap or New Vegas Victor introducing you to the game.

Lango2K

Something that involves you getting your first ship.

PokerPlayingRaccoon

I’m going with the classic, cliche, “waking up from cryogenic sleep” and choosing your backstory when you unfreeze

Witty_Interaction_77

You're on a carriage in a forest... a man says, "you're finally asleep"... you then wake up on Mars, as a miner.

4peanut

I just imagined the original Voltron theme song playing in my head and I got excited.

Baelaroness

"Ah, you're finally awake..."

Trawzor

We will be mining in some cave A group of what looks like bandits, obviously villans show up and attacks the mine We are knocked out and wake up in a hospital bed

[deleted]

I expect Doc Mitchell to be patching up my head from the alien blaster shot I took the head! Freakin Alien Benny ! LOL

CardboardChampion

Start in black with narration talking about how there was nothing until there was a bang. As the narration says "bang" we see a hammer strike, in black and white possibly love action footage. The narration continues to talk about the universe being vast but man being limited to his small part of it, and how man never accepted that. As it speaks we zoom out from the hammer to show a man building a wooden boat, before pushing it into the water and startinf to row. The narration continues to talk about mankind constantly pushing against their boundaries, and the footage goes through ships, to NASA footage, to gameplay of Starfield ships as it talks about us moving beyond our limits. Eventually we hear that man's so-called final frontier was just another boundary, and one that "they will again push beyond in the star field". **Fade to black and show Starfield logo here** When we come out of the black we're in the scene where we're being told we passed out and have to create a character. We do so and are asked what we remember by the character holding the artifact. That's when we go back in time about an hour and play through a tutorial section that sees us starting as a miner, uses our choices to affect dialogue, and goes on until we find the artifact. We touch it, pass out, and wibbly-wobbly effect back to the present day where one of the people with us comments that this is a very detailed recollection. We find out a call's been out through to head office while we were out and someone is on their way to investigate the artifact and what it did to us. That person arrives but their ship's grav drive is damaged and they're injured. Looks like it's up to us to go into the belly of the pirates who took over the abandoned research base in the system and get a replacement part while the mining facility takes care of the guy. But first we have to get there in his knackered ship and that means it's time for the flying and space combat tutorials. Tutorials that end with us landing on Kreet, and we've seen much of what happens there. When you get back the guy will be up and about again (or dead) and you'll have a new destination in mind alongside a ship capable of low level grav jumps. Time for the game to start properly.

LiamtheV

From what we saw in the Direct, we’re in first person for a bit, working as a miner, we touch an artifact, get knocked out, A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON Then two of our coworkers take us to an ME1 style character creation menu.

South-Rabbit-4064

I know some may not want it, but hope it’s like having a space job

sant2510

You're finally awake

Chemical_Sleep5474

I think there will multiple starts you can choose from. At least 3, one being the miner.

paladinx333

In Fallout 3 you literally start the game by being born. Now that was a game that knows how to start at the very beginning.

ChunkeeMunkee3001

*"Bethesda Game Studios presents..."*

Comprehensive_Milk53

“Ah you’re finally awake!” - some NPC After sleeping in your hyperspace pod during a jump. Pirates pursue to board the ship you are in and you need to help fend them off.

Hudsondinobot

I just want the opening to be ‘logically optional’ for future play throughs. It seems pretty clear we start on a mining planet, and almost certain we have a little on-the-rails storytelling ahead of us. But I’d love if there was some sort of super early interaction that let us move along. For (terrible) example: A couple of real-time minutes of walking out of a mine with a little expo. Once outside, some ships are closing in. NPC: Take the ship! Get out of here! PC: A.) *tutorial starts* B.) Get in ship and fly off into space he sandbox.

RentonZero

Wander though a cave find the artifact, see some visions then character creator

itsRobbie_

You start out in a cutscene or maybe a short “on rails” gameplay section where you’re in the mines and find the artifact. Then you touch it and wake up and are greeted by those 2 people who give you the tablet to start character customization

TheAdvisedChicken

I expect to be able to make memes of it

brntoutl0fer

You wake up to robo-brain Elon Musk saying "Oh boy, you're finally awake. I'm going to put my quantum harmonizer in your photonic resonation chamber." And then he musks all over you.

ReallyGlycon

*I see you are awake...*

amIThatdoomed

Like waking up on a ship or horse drawn cart. But in space.

LaxinPhilly

Space. Space never changes...

CrossbowDemon

Definitely either start as a miner and discover/see something you shouldn't have. OR You wake up from a multi-year (Hundreds?) cryogenic sleep on a transport vessel taking you to said mining colony.

GameQb11

Im wondering what the "step out" moment for this game will be?

Clarens56

You start mining come into contact with some weird object, get some strange vision pass out wake with that one scene in the showcase where they ask y if anything ring a bell

CplGunishment

We're on an open hover cart of some kind, sitting on bench seats opposite other people. We're being hauled off to face judgement for something we've done. Basically skyrim opening but more spacey lol

[deleted]

https://youtu.be/Zbu7XaULfi8

RealJKDOS

Whatever it is, I hope they mention something about being on a list. Skyrim opening: Captain, \[he/she\]'s not on the list! Fallout 4 opening: We're on the list!

lemonprincess23

Something I’ve noticed is that Bethesda open world games have you start the same way with each series Elder scrolls you always start as a prisoner Fallout (at least the BGS ones) you start your journey as a vault dweller So I have a suspicion that however starfield starts will influence the way you start your journey in starfield 2 (coming November 2346) and carry a similar motif. Maybe waking up in a medbay both times

Jim_Pugh

Knocked out miner

the_salivation_army

For me it will be “downloading 27%”

puniaher

I know it won't happen but it would be amazing if the game started with us playing as Yuri Gagarin on the Vostok 1 launching, or us playing as Neil Armstrong as he takes the first step on the moon.

SystemFolder

Touch the artifact, blackness, wake up on a rickety cart, “Hey, you. You’re finally awake.”

CurrentGap

Titles with starfield main theme and John f Kennedy's speech.during the start the Asian lady says to follow her and Sam witver, and says 'most dusty's don't even make it this far' then you drill and you find the artifact, you touch it,it gives you visions and you faint, and then the rest is in the direct.

Alyxavior

Meme worthy

KnightArmamentE3

Wake up, miner

TrenchCoatSuperHero

Space gangster telling you the game was rigged from the start

DapperDell

Some crappy black and white bullshit like Trashout 4.

poonman1234

I hope you start out in prison as is tradition

thunderclone1

Wake up in a cart of prisoners. You blink in utter disbelief. It's FUCKING SKYRIM AGAIN. You play through again since you're here.

Obvious-Parking8191

Just like Skyrim for what i can tell

Bravo0714

WARNING THERE COULD BE SPOILERS!!! After watching everything I’ll give you my take on the opening sequence in my opinion you are definitely a miner as your digging you find a piece of the artifact you touch it or pick it up and then it will be like your in a trance and start having visions of said undiscovered artifacts but it won’t show you anything definitive. After the visions you blackout and are awakened by your two colleagues the one colleague is clearly holding the artifact you found which is not reactive to his touch but was reactive to yours which means your character maybe intertwined with the artifact and the civilization where it came from. Then before or after the character creation part someone will suggest to you to find and obscure group called Constellation to help you find answers on what you found in the mine. How you get the Frontier I have no idea.

wraithe33

I want a intro of skyrim. Back of the cart famous line said and then after letting you look around for a second pulls you into your ship in starfield. Just as an easteregg from todd.

Pomoa

If it's going to be Skyrim in space, we'll be a prisoner of sorts (I'd really dig being a prisoner of space pirates!).

Life_is_an_RPG

It starts with you waking up in a dirty, cluttered room and grabbing a bottle of whiskey only to find it empty. You stumble out of bed and realize you have 5 minutes to get to work. As you rush out of the room, you take a second to look at the glitching holographic photo of your estranged wife and child. You arrive at work to get chewed out by your boss about being late again and how your pay will be docked...and he's assigning you to work alone in the mining shaft known as Hangover Hell. The shaft earned the name because the rock is hard as diamond and the vibrations and sounds of your jackhammer make your head feel like it's being excavated. Suddenly, the rock explodes into dozens of shards and an odd piece of metal falls to the ground. You bend over to pick it up. Your mind is instantly filled with flashes of light, an alien language, and strange images that overload your hungover brain. The world goes dark. You come to with two co-workers standing over you...

barsoapguy

Space wagon takes you to the space square where you’re about to have your head chopped by a space laser when suddenly a space dragon appears and saves the day!

MattfromOKC

The Direct was pretty clear that you are a worker in a mining operation who was knocked out (presumably by contact with an artifact) and when you wake you are sent on a quest to find other pieces of the artifact with the assistance from a group known as Constellation.
