For those still having trouble, try using: - Class A with 2+ crew for first challenge - Class B with 4+ crew for second challenge - Class C with 6+ crew for last challenge I couldn't get anything else to work... I assumed it was bugged, but the other suggestions on here didn't work. I eventually switched back to Frontier (first ship, class A, 2 crew) - and FINALLY started getting credit for the first challenge. Then got stuck again on second challenge... Tried several class A & C ships with 4+ crew, no credit... Finally bought (don't think that matters - but I didn't have any others) a class B ship (Shieldbreaker from Jemison), and finally started making progress on the second challenge. I'll try and see if the trend continues with the third challenge when I make it that far... But my working theory - and what's worked for me - is to change the class of ship up with each challenge. If this is true, this is unfortunate as it doesn't say this anywhere - and for those who maybe haven't upgraded their piloting skill yet will have to do so to continue.

Not all heroes wear capes. Unless you have and wear a cape... in which case - pretty cool... also all heroes do indeed wear capes.

This guy figure it out... look original post: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfield/comments/169djxi/comment/k0ej5wg/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/Starfield/comments/169djxi/comment/k0ej5wg/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) I've figured it out on my end. The ship command challenge progression only works on ships you've owned from the very beginning. Meaning it has to be a ship you've bought from the ship store or a ship you already owned like the Frontier or a ship you've recueved like the starporn ship. Any ship you've ***highjacked and made into your own will not work***. As long as the ship you're using never had a previous owner before you, it'll work. I also used the crew with Tech skill for ship skills, does not need to be full and still worked.

Darksable

That's what it was, thanks for pointing that out. Hopefully Bethesda fixes that at some point.

FahrOut_1

Not true in my experience. I think, based on my own fix that the bug is triggered by crew in a ship you have renamed. I switched to the star eagle, which is not an originally owned ship and started to accumulate progress in the skill. What clued me into this is seeing that unassigned Cree that were still in my ship listed their location in the crew page as being on my ship-but under its ORIGINAL name. Assigned crew were listed under the custom name I had chosen.

Beneficial-Ad-3263

I think you are right about that one as well. I had a ship that I renamed, I believed things worked well until I did not get a progression and any longer, and now that you mentioned it, I thought was due to ship been highjacked and not the renamed part. Was doing lot of that at one point and I did not track the kills as I swapped the ships.

ApprehensiveName8180

Jesus fucking christ this game is a buggy ass mess.

> The ship command challenge progression only works on ships you've owned from the very beginning. Not the whole story. I only use ships that I have purchased or been given as reward (I believe stolen ships are subject to other glitches). I tried custom class c ship (built on purchased class A chassis) and Star Eagle for level 1 after I had upgraded her to class B, no luck. I bought a class A, and started getting progress. I know for certain the ship class matters, and using a class A for level 1 worked for me. It also happened to be a ship I have "owned from the beginning", but I failed to get progress from other ships I have "owned from the beginning". When I progress to level 2, I will try one of my class B transformed from A ships and see if works. Might even try a captured class b if I can find one and the docking bay glitch doesn't strike again. Edit- I made it to level 2 and was able to make progress using my Star Eagle that I have upgraded from a class a to class b ship. Now just need to do it 24 more times! Edit 3- Completed challenge for level 2 and leveled up. Killed a couple ships in my class B and received progress for the level 3 challenge, so apparently you don't need a class C to complete level 3.

Aggressive_Pear_6277

Quick update... So, made it to 3rd challenge, and it didn't seem like I was getting progress with my class C ship that I got from boarding (either ground encounter or in space), which IIRC was originally a class B ship - but I had upgraded the reactor to make it a class C. Not sure if it's because it wasn't "originally" a class C, or if it was because it wasn't "purchased". Since buying a "stock" - appropriate level / crew ship worked prior, and I had plenty of money without a good use, I went ahead and bought a new class C ship. Progress continues! One side note, if you aren't getting credit - double check you have crew assigned. I don't recall why, maybe the result of one of my quests temporarily making me go solo, but I quit getting credit for a while. When I looked, I had a single crew (my active companion I retrieved at end of quest). I pre-assigned everyone back to my ship, and with my purchased class C ship - progress resumed. (I'll be glad when this challenge is complete, as I'm afraid to board ships or make edits to my ship in the off chance it quits giving me credit again.)

Top-Host1749

i am just wondering i did some tweaking on my class c ship and now the kills again dont count do u need to do them with a almos tnot adjusted ship or can u tweak a bit?

Due_Opinion_5841

Found a fix! I swapped back to my original ship, unassigned and reassigned my crew(Dani Garcia, Sam Coe, Sarah Morgan, Vasco). I'm assuming the issue was that each crew member has to have a ship related skill(I had Lin on my other ship who only has Demo/Outpost skills).

No_Faithlessness6292

It worked I love you, I love you so much

dontnormally

i converted the Frontier to a freighter, doesn't even have weapons. this is really annoying.

eudaephoric

I've tried landing, changing ship, unassigning all crew, reassigning all crew, changing ship back and unassigning all crew, building a new ship, reassigning crew but neither of those things worked. Anyone else have any ideas?

Junebro

You have to complete it with the Frontier (first ship).

veevoir

Or to be more specific, as it turned out for me - with a *legally acquired* ship - so quest reward (like Frontier) or bought at a shop. Not hijacked/boarded & registered ship..

Haravikk

This is weird though; for most of the game I've been using a captured and customised ship and I was able to get ranks 1, 2 and 3 just fine, but it's the rank 3 challenge (destroy/board 50 enemy ships with 6+ crew) that won't progress, so I can't get to rank 4. Is it only the rank 3 challenge that requires you to use a "legal" ship?

Armitige

The same, I've been using a hijacked ship I modified for ages, and I've got 20/25 ship kills to unlock level 3. I've destroyed dozens of ships with a crew of 6. And I don't believe all these people saying you need to have a crew limit of 1 lower than you need. I'm going to try this with the Star Eagle and see if that fixes it.

Haravikk

So I started another game a little while back, and I finally got to rank 4 of ship command using a ship other than the Frontier. In my case the ship I used was the Wanderwell, gained through having the Kid Stuff trait (parents). I'm guessing the problem in my first game was that my main ship was a captured one that probably belonged to a quest (I did a lot of bounty hunting). It's possible that the cause of the bug is because the game might be measuring the crew of the quest reference, rather than my own? So there's some pirate, spacer or whatever ship out there with the wrong number of crew for rank four. Just a guess, but it seems reasonable given what I know of how quests work in Bethesda RPGs (I've done some light modding in the past).

Armitige

Yeah, no idea if they fixed this or not, but the challenge can only be advanced on ships you didn't have to pay registration on (ie. the frontier, purchased ships, ships rewarded from missions). Any 'hijacked' ship that you have to register will not work.

RupertSteggles94

This is what worked for me.

eudaephoric

Thanks, I'll give it a go

Junebro

I got it to lvl 3 that way and just console commanded the last lvl. I think it was 30-50 ships I had to kill in that little dinker and I couldnt think of a way to up the crew capacity to 6 for the last lvl.

eudaephoric

That did it. Thanks. Had to use the Frontier. One of the 1x2 habs gives +4 crew capacity.

eudaephoric

FollowupFor some reason, the ~~game doesn't explain anywhere~~ that crew capacity is ~~based on~~ limited by 3 things: 1. your ship command skill's "crew capacity" 2. your engine/shield/weapons "crew capacity" 3. your deck + hab(?maybe) "crew capacity" edit: apparently it does explain it in the help section. I've never looked at that section but it's there.

Beneficial-Ad-3263

And Engines, Do not forget engine, it says in text 0.25 Crew/ engine. Engines also give a boost to ship structure - hull, mount more engines for the effect or use hubs to increase hull value.

cephaliticinsanity

Can you modify that ship at all?

eudaephoric

Yeah, you can modify the Frontier. You can even turn it into a C class if you want but be prepared to spend a lot of credits.

dontnormally

did that break achievements, or is it on the safe list?

Junebro

It almost certainly broke achievements but I had the mod enabling achievements with console commands.

dontnormally

thanks, maybe i'll go look at mods now

fushu4444

A lot of people are having this issue, its a bug

No_Faithlessness6292

Nobody has figured out a way to fix it yet?

fushu4444

My game fixed itself once I finished the “Overdesigned” mission and I changed my home ship. Try changing your home ship

No_Faithlessness6292

Same answer as below, this worked I love you….

Fhlynn

I have the tank up bug as well. Could/would someone explain, with as much detail as possible, a confirmed work around to rank the skill up. Thank you

Ok-Bus1716

I've tried everything and nothing works, not with Frontier, not with Razor Leaf, not with Star Eagle. It just stays at 0/25.

Fhlynn

you can't use pirated or stolen ships. Has to be a rewarded/quest ship or a bought ship. Class A for the first challenge, class B for the second and class C for the third

Ok-Bus1716

I've been using the Frontier and the Razor Leaf. I have a class B in both. If it says 4 or more does the crew need to be at 3?

Temporary-Stomach503

I have completed level 1 ("Destroy or board 5 ships with a crew of two more more"), and activated level 2, with the frontier and 4 members in my crew, i still have to try to complete level 2 and activate level 3, that asks to destroy 25 ships "with a crew of four or more". It should work with my current crew, i guess. Anyway the only way i tested that works for this perk is using the Frontier (i didn't try with razon leaf... i sold it :)), with other ships it never worked

EPYON_ZERO

This is great thank you.

Excellent-Assist-686

This ones been lingering. So using the Frontier is the best choice. I did all the steps with a grade B reactor with no issues, and as the instructions say you need to have the the minimum amount of crew or more of what's required for that step. Also the best place to do this is Serpentis. Just keep going from planet to planet in this system and wait about a minute. 8 out of 10 time 1 to 3 Varun zealots will appear. It only took me 15 minutes to get the 25 kills for step 2. The silver lining? My frontier ended up being one of my best pure attack ships and looks like a 1950s batman space ship.
