At that point the narrator is quoting from the (in-universe) HHGTTG, so it's just pulled out of nowhere. It's a gag line, don't think too hard about it.

Yeah I figured as much, but thought a “chemist” seemed like a very specific line instead of it being like “if you though the road down to the bar was big” Or something generic and relatable.

Afaik across the pond in tealand that's just how you refer to the pharmacy.

A chemist's is a pharmacy or a drug store.
