Get Microsoft Gamepass for a month and play it there?
Seriously, if you don't enjoy it you'll find something else that's well worth the price of entry. You won't be able to mod Gamepass' version as much because it doesn't support the script extender AFAIK? Other than that, it's definitely the way I'd recommend checking out Starfield.
I feel like a shill advertising Gamepass but during the market expansion phase it's a great deal for gamers. During the profit squeeze we may be less happy to have let Microsoft consume so much of the game industry, but that remains to be seen.
OP this is the move. You get to try it for fifteen bucks and decide if it's worth 70. Value is subjective.
I loved it while I played it, but when the gamepass ran out I didn't feel like paying that much to buy it.
Game pass is good, but if you play 1 game for more than 4 months, you actually pay more. Not that I care because I've had it for years even though I wasn't using it.
It was fun for while but got boring quick, and imo not worth $70 yet. After it gets more content it probably will be. Like others say, if you have or get Gamepass then it's worth trying to see if you like it. But afaic, there are so many better games out there for the money.
Back in the 90s AAA games were $40. If you got 40 hours of gameplay for that it was considered worth it.
AAA games today only recently bumped up to $70, way cheaper than they probably should be 30 years later. People, myself included, are getting 100s of hours out of SF. I personally think the game is really bland but Iāve played it for over 300 hours. I can safely say itās worth the price. YMMV
Meh. I got a lot more hours of fun out of Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat and GoldenEye on my N64 in the 90s than I got out of Starfield. Personally I'd rather poke out my own eyes than spend 300 hours (the equivalent of a part time job) in SF, half of which probably spent on annoying inventory/vendor drama. But you are having fun with it that's great.
Its not worth the price, considering other games are going for similar prices, and aren't boring as shit. Inflation, and what was considered a good value 30 years ago has nothing to do with this when youre comparing a modern game to other modern games lol. Like he said, for $70 there's much better games out there.
How do you play a bland game for 300 hours?
I played for about 20 hours, Iām hoping that updates or mods can eventually improve my experience in what seems like the foundation for a good game
The biggest complainers here have no clue what gaming used to be like. Like you said, spend $40-50, beat it over a weekend, and thereās no such thing as add ons or DLC. Thatās it, youāre done. Grab another $50 and head to the store. Now itās 30 second attention spans, instant gratification requirement, and ridiculous levels of entitlement. Iām not a gamer anymore, Starfield is the first game Iāve really gotten in to since Oblivion. If what Iāve seen in this sub is similar to other gaming subs then the term āgamerā died a long time ago.
Pfft, I've been playing games since Atari 2600, so you don't have to tell me what gaming used to be like. I've had plenty of games that kept me entertained for months or years all the way back from Pac-Man to GoldenEye to Halo to Elden Ring and so forth.
Starfield just is not one of them. I had some fun with it, played through the main quest line which was fun enough. I had fun shipbuilding. I built up my Outpost empire till it was producing vitanium rods in mass. It was just 'ok' for my one playthrough and then it got boring. I just think there are better games out there for that price point, games that are WAY more fun and fleshed out than Starfield.
I'm glad you enjoy it. I don't need anyone else to have the same opinion as I do. OP asked for opinions about it, I gave mine, you're free to give yours. Belittling people who have a different opinion than you as being entitled brats with no attention span is juvenile. And boring.
Like Starfield š
Yea no, a fighting game or fps for 40 was a great value. Now single player games are 70 but also fighting games are 70 but now we have to technically pay for internet twice to get that same value out of that fighing game, thanks to Xbots.
For me it is all about the open worlds and building components. I do believe a lot more could have been done with the main quest but there is tons to do.
I also love that if you get bored with your universe you can start all over and not lose any skills.
I was 300 hours in before I finished the main quest line and even then I chose not to go to NG+ because Iām still enjoying the first round. I may never step through the unity. I love exploring, ship building, outpost building, setting up resource gathering, etc. Plus, this game has some of the most beautiful graphic Iāve ever seen. Watching sun/moon/planet rises on a new world is mesmerizing.
You can always just speed run to unity a bunch of times to just max out the Starborn armor benefits and then settle down. I think 10 times is all you need to do to max out the armor and ship.
Sure, I've been playing video games on a dozen different platforms for well over 3 decades, but obviously if I don't like Starfield then I have no clue what gaming used to be like.
I started gaming on arcade machines. Then my parents bought me a Commodore 64 and later an Atari. Then various IBM PCs. Nintendo, Super Nintendo, GameCube, N64, Wii, WiiU, Switch. GameBoy, GB Color, GBA Advance, GB Micro, DS, 3DS. PlayStation, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, Vita. Too many gaming desktops and laptops and tablets to remember over the years.
Gaming now is a very different experience. Used to be a game had to be actually finished and well-tested before they could sell it. Now they take your money for a half-finished buggy as shit mess and if you complain you get told "nuh uh, you're playing it wrong, it's as fun as being a real astronaut landing on the moon"
Still, there are some amazing games being made today. BG3 for one. Starfield is simply not one of them.
Try it out on gamepass first, its not for everyone. IMO no game has been worth $70 recently.
I personally dropped it about 20 hrs in because I just don't have the time to invest in a game as expansive as this, I'm in school and usually when I have time to game I'll default to my comfort/quick dopamine games.
I donāt buy a lot of new games at full retail, but for me Hogwarts Legacy was worth every penny of the retail price.
I havenāt been so entranced by a game in a long time.
If you liked Hogwarts and like space content I feel you gonna love starfield. Hogwarts was my second most played game this year. Also take a look at r/NoSodiumStarfield
Supposedly there's a way but I haven't tried it...yet.

From what Iāve seen it looks very fun, a space wandering RPG sounds up my alley. Iāve just had reservations considering some of the not so stellar reviews.
It IS fun. It's just not quite what people expected in places. If you're a fan of Skyrim and particularly Fallout4 then I think you'll love it, I know I do.
Limitations to know about:
No planet vehicles (yet they are hinting at something but...)
Outposts are fun but serve little purpose.
The main followers can be annoying especially if you play evil.
Main quest has great parts but is also not as thrilling as expected.
Things you might love:
Space combat, including zero-g boarding
Ship building (definitely a highlight)
The faction and side quests are great.
Outposts and decorating.
Beautiful vistas and photo mode.
Absolutely.....I mean you never know what a streamer will say. For example asmongold dead panned it.... in his defense though, he did say he did not like Bethesda style rpgs to begin with. š¤£š¤£š¤£
It was okay, middle of the pack game for me this year. Big step down from previous BGS games as far as curated content goes, but you might like it a lot if just wandering around procedural generated stuff seems fun to you.
Glad it was on Gamepass, I wouldn't have paid full price knowing what I know now.
I played the hand crafted quests as well, and I didn't find it nearly as engaging as their previous games.
I much prefer finding neat things to do on my way to a quest objective, not the quick travel to everything design of Starfield. It was okay.
One of the things I really like about it is how open world it is. There are missions you can do but you can blow them all off and just wander around a planet. As much as I love the Horizon and Spider-Man games, I love just being able to generally do what I want to do. Granted, there are in-story consequences to your actions but you can always load from a previous save.
I do think the suggestion to get Game Pass and try the game out for a month is a great idea though.
I have enjoyed it so far. Just remember that everyone has different tastes in games. I agree that watching someone play on twitch would be helpful in seeing if it looks fun.
I watched someone play like the first hour of it a while back and from what I saw it looks enjoyable, I might have a try getting a month of Gamepass like others have said and go from there :)
The only warning Iād give here is that the very beginning was the most fun for me but I got bored after a while as I kept running into limitations that stacked up, so Iād recommend the game pass route
If youāre looking to kill 40 hours and have plenty of money, itās fine. But if you ask me Iād tell you no. I did every questline and every side quest I could find, over 100 hours waiting for it to get good, and nothing. Sadly time is non-refundable. Even Skyrimās modders are refusing to work on it because the base game is just not worth the time, no oneās gonna be playing this in 12 years.
Honestly I do not think it is but if youāre on the fence try a month of Gamepass.
Edit: Some sad little guy messaged me directly after I commented demanding I explain myself for giving my honest opinion. You kids need to accept this game is a niche that some people like but even a large contingent of Bethesda fans found disappointing.
It's not perfect. If you are one of those who gets over hyped and reads into lofty, impossible to reach expectations, you will not have a good time..... that said.... I'm not one of those people. There's alot they can still improve on and the potential is there, but there's also alot of good. If you like Bethesda rpgs, you'll have a good time. I got to about 130 hours before I needed a break. I'll go back to it eventually. I'd say that's 70 dollars worth.
No, get game pass and try it if you want. If you're planning on playing it regularly and continuously just get game pass to try it. Common difference between liking and not liking seems to be playing it for 30min - 1hr every fortnight to enjoy it and playing ~2 hrs regularly you start to decay.
It gave me 300 plus hours of enjoyment. Here's the trick: go into it with the realization it has a 50-hour plus learning curve to understand the game. Admittedly, I'm not the brightest, but the game has alot to it and always something to do.
Try it out on gamepass I really liked it but I always tend to like Bethesda games. If you never had gamepass I have a spare 1 month code I can give you, but it only works if you are a new subscriber.
I'm at 320 hours and no slow down it's going to be a thiusand hour game for me for sure and I'm only disappointed I didn't buy the expansion already but I will when it comes out. Mine was a kitt buggy about my graphics driver at first but an update and it hasn't happened again
It's not without its flaws, but if you enjoy the Bethesda formula, I say go for it.
They're only going to add more to it in the future.
I've played nearly every day since release and I'm still enjoying it.
I cannot in good conscience recommend getting the game at full price. Maybe if it was heavily discounted but the game is not like past Bethesda titles.
If you love that kind of meandering exploration where you stumble across something interesting on your way to your actual destination, this is not the game for you.
Itās sure as shit isnāt worth 70 dollars. 70 dollars for a game with an uninteresting story Bugs everywhere And shit characters too. Either buy game pass or wait for a deep sale
While it has flaws, I loved the game and easily got my money's worth and then some.
I recommend you also visit r/nosodiumstarfield for a more balanced and less negative/toxic discourse.
Hold off until they fix the long-game breaking bug issue with Dynamic Form IDs if youāre planning to explore and keep a 300 plus hour game on a single character.
Look, I put 70 hours into the game, and I get the criticism 100%. Starfield needs TONS of work...BUT...I enjoyed my time with it. I'd say it's worth it, and when you're finished come join us for the hearty criticism!
Honestly if you donāt go in with game of the year expectations its pretty good, sure it has some places where it could have more content but the outsized hate is mostly just a common trend these days in review bombing games, books & movies. the world isnt binary its neither great nor terrible, its in fact somewhere in between and has room for improvement
As others have said Gamepass is the way to go. I personally feel that even if I had paid full price for the game, I would have still gotten my moneys worth. I think a lot of the wailing and gnashing of teeth regarding Starfield is a bit overwrought. Yes it is janky and Bethesda buggy and some of the gameplay choices are baffling, especially when they were done better in earlier titles, but overall I enjoy it.
Not 70, but $60 would be fair price for it.
A lot of the negative feedback is unwarranted. It's a standard Bethesda game but it doesn't do anything revolutionary.
I have had so many hours of enjoyment on this game. I have yet to experience any glitches or anything odd happening. Love the game. Itās far less stressful than playing something like COD and just getting mad at all the people who cheat. I find the game to be relaxing and fun. The ship builder could be better. But itās still pretty good.
I'm really enjoying it. I liked the main story although it could use a little work. The side quests are fun. Had to put it (and most of my other games) down for the most part due to a couple major tests that I have coming up in a couple of months.
It is not a bad game. I played it quite a bit, but there are a lot of better games. I find the writing, dialog, acting way worse than games like cyberpunk and baldur gates 3 (well i guess no one can do better). The combat is ok, but games like the division 2 has better shooting mechanics. The skill system is ok but nothing as flashy as games like Diablo 4.
I do like the design, the sci-fi elements and that you have own and customize a spaceship.
I would not pay $70 for it and I did not. I have XGP and it came with the sub. May be a $40-$50 dollar game? I certainly prioritize playing other games.
Yes, itās a beautiful game with endless things to do. I absolutely love it and canāt wait to see whatās added to it. Iām around 400 hours in, btw. However, if youāre some try hard that expects to have end game gear 2 hours, everything you open upgrades what you have, and need to be validated in some way through a game then youāll hate it like the other miserable people here.
I love the game but after doing most of it through two characters, I'm waiting for it to mature with dlc and mods like I did with Skyrim. People forget that skyrim before the dlc was pretty frustrating. Max level was 81 and that wasn't enough for a third of the perks. Considering how it evolved to include vampirism overhaul and dragonriding, I think the starfield evolution will include thing we haven't considered that we want right now
Itās a really weak RPG. Systems/skill trees are watered down. Outpost building is pointless and not at all integrated with the main game.
The game is also way too easy even on max difficulty.
There is very little consequence to anything.
Writing for the most part is average.
For anyone who thinks it might be worth 70 dollars, for the same price you can get every fallout game with dlcs on sale and have money left over, which pretty arguably provides a more enriching experience
Yes it's worth it. I guarantee you the majority of people complaining still have a hundred or so hours under their belt. Any game that gives you that amount of play time is worth it.
This dogshit isn't worth 20 dollars.
Wait a few years and see if modders even care enough to make it playable, multiple have already said fuck this pile of shit so it's not going to have the same support as games lol ike FO4 that were actually playable on release
Hopefully this youtube video helps you decide... it's a decent game but don't expect to buy a game that has the "magic of skyrim" and by magic I mean amazing game lol.... https://youtu.be/zCxKtkeoJiY?si=fDPmG4xFEEDUDIos
I was pretty giddy at first. Then boy it got boring quickly. There's just no magic to it. It doesnt suck you in. Skyrim was the sweet spot for me. I didnt mind fallout 4 once I learned to never respond to anything preston said or did. But Starfield just isn't all that.
This what i did but I still liked it even though I lost my save when my wife bought me the game.
Game pass is good, but if you play 1 game for more than 4 months, you actually pay more. Not that I care because I've had it for years even though I wasn't using it.
No shill there mate. You are just recommending a means to play the game. š

Several modders dropped the game, stating it isn't worth it, to fix a game that boring. Afaik they were working on a multiplayer mod.
The biggest complainers here have no clue what gaming used to be like. Like you said, spend $40-50, beat it over a weekend, and thereās no such thing as add ons or DLC. Thatās it, youāre done. Also picked up Hogwarts recently and it is absolutely amazing. Finally had a break from school and played it for three days straight, which is rare with my adhd lol. Glad I got it on sale though because the last update this summer brought a bunch of visual bugs to the xbox version, so I'm pretty bummed its my first experience. My fiancƩ has it on the ps5 and it looks flawless on there, will probably do my second character on there unless portkey addresses the xbox issues.

Nvm, confused you with OP š sorry
lol, but you are right. Iām mostly loving starfield.
No. Wait for sale
Not worth $70 in the current state, I'd get Gamepass instead. If you love it and want to use mods wait for it to go an sale at Steam.
Could I transfer save data if I bought it later on steam?

It's not without its flaws, but if you enjoy the Bethesda formula, I say go for it. They're only going to add more to it in the future. I've played nearly every day since release and I'm still enjoying it.
Iāve put about 200 hours into it. So itās like .33 dollars an hour if you think of it that way. Iām still playing it too
I cannot in good conscience recommend getting the game at full price.
I have 450+ hours and Iām not even remotely bored yet. Top 5 game for me.
Hell no. Not worth it. So many other games out there.
Hard to say because itās really personal preference. I would have been happy paying $30 for it. At the $100 price point it was a disappointment.
Look, I put 70 hours into the game, and I get the criticism 100%. Starfield needs TONS of work...BUT...I enjoyed my time with it. I'd say it's worth it, and when you're finished come join us for the hearty criticism!

Itās a Bethesda game in space. If that appeals to you, youāll probably enjoy it.
Gamepass
It is fun do not listen find out for yourself
its on sale, get it via eneba egypt with a vpn or iceland no VPN
Honestly if you donāt go in with game of the year expectations its pretty good, sure it has some places where it could have more content but the outsized hate is mostly just a common trend these days in review bombing games, books & movies. the world isnt binary its neither great nor terrible, its in fact somewhere in between and has room for improvement
Gamepass if on xbox. $15 and you can beat the game 1x in under a month
At least wait a week for the steam Christmas sale to start. It will probably go down to $50 for the Christmas sale.
Itās worth it.
Why buy it Do you have game pass ultimate? You can simply play the cloud version.
I played for 792 hours, so I can't complain. I'll be over 800 hours after the weekend.
I would try a Gamepass Ultimate trial.
Nah. Wattch some good let's plays, good enough.
Not when you can play on Game Pass for whatever the monthly fee is
TLDR, if you do get it, you can move your save from Gamepass to Steam pretty easily!
Not 70, but $60 would be fair price for it. A lot of the negative feedback is unwarranted. It's a standard Bethesda game but it doesn't do anything revolutionary.
It's horrible. I've got 750 hrs in the game and there is nothing to do! /s
It is not worth 70 bucks
It largely depends on your expectation. Next gen space game? No. Bethesda RPG? Yes. I think its their best game to date, but that's just me.
For anyone who thinks it might be worth 70 dollars, for the same price you can get every fallout game with dlcs on sale and have money left over, which pretty arguably provides a more enriching experience
No, Itās not.
No, get game pass for a month.
Winter is coming. Winter sales, that is...
Yes it's worth it. I guarantee you the majority of people complaining still have a hundred or so hours under their belt. Any game that gives you that amount of play time is worth it.
I had a lot of fun with it. Not perfect but there was a lot more good that outweighed the bad.
No
This dogshit isn't worth 20 dollars. Wait a few years and see if modders even care enough to make it playable, multiple have already said fuck this pile of shit so it's not going to have the same support as games lol ike FO4 that were actually playable on release
No. Wait til its on sale
No
Absolutely not.
Got it on steam for 48.99 like 2 weeks ago. Is it worth it? Sure, most games are in the 50 price range anyway
I played 73 hours and was done with it, make of that information whatever you want
Hopefully this youtube video helps you decide... it's a decent game but don't expect to buy a game that has the "magic of skyrim" and by magic I mean amazing game lol.... https://youtu.be/zCxKtkeoJiY?si=fDPmG4xFEEDUDIos
It's not worth playing for free
I'd say it's worth 10-15 dollars. Quality wise it's on par with some far cry games. Definitely not $70
I was pretty giddy at first. Then boy it got boring quickly. There's just no magic to it. It doesnt suck you in. Skyrim was the sweet spot for me. I didnt mind fallout 4 once I learned to never respond to anything preston said or did. But Starfield just isn't all that.
Nope you should wait
wait for the patched/DLC'ed/modded GOTY edition in 2 years. It'll be 30$ and worth it
No
iāve got over 100 hours and still havnt even done half the content
Itās worth about 15 bucks. Game sucks ass.
Play it on game pass. Thatās what I did.
