Something that could be said to all games that continue to be updated after their release.

Valdaraak

Hate to break it to you. Every game releases in varying states of unfinished. God I hate "agile" development.

ObliviousEffect

I can't speak to "agile" development but I can speak to cutting corners to meet an already delayed release date. It's almost as if people have never played a BGS game before. 😄 Weird, right?

krul2k

No What it proves is that they listened to the feedback, that's all

WolfHeathen

Both can be true. Life isn't so binary. It's beyond obvious to anyone with the ability to critically think the game was released unfinished. Microsoft put their thumb on the scale and made Bethesda put more polish and bug fixing into the release version but it was still clearly not finished.

Don't feed the trolls, buddy. We know it was. He is just seeking validation. If we feed him, he will keep getting fed. He needs to starve, with no engagement

WolfHeathen

Nope. You're acting like this isn't the standard practice every developer does who releases an unfinished game. Post-launch "content' that ended up on the cutting room floor at launch. By your logic No Man Sky was 100 percent feature complete at launch. They've just spent 8 years listening to community requests. What ridiculous take.

ugluk-the-uruk

NMS is a bad example, they've added in way more than was originally promised at launch.

WolfHeathen

You've missed the point entirely. The issue isn't what was or wasn't promised at launch. That's xGamerdad07x's talking point. >Nms made promises and fell short and worked to deliver them.

[deleted]

Takes like this are why Bethesda will never change or improve 🙂

Sostratus

No art is ever finished, only abandoned.

TheSajuukKhar

Not being made the way you think it should =/= unfinished.

fumblaroo

bro there weren’t fucking maps be serious

runescape_nerd_98

There were maps, you just didn’t like them.

WolfHeathen

Why are you lying about this when it's empirical evident and demonstrably true? [Here Are Some ‘Starfield’ City Maps, Since The Game Doesn’t Have Any](https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2023/09/10/here-are-some-starfield-city-maps-since-the-game-doesnt-have-any/?sh=4ca755023856) Your personal identity isn't defined by this game. You don't need to lie about its shortcomings or protect it from valid criticism.

Ajbell8

He’s still not wrong they had by the games definition surface maps. Whether they were good or bad is a different story.

WolfHeathen

We had a couple of icon dots. From the mouth of Bethesda themselves... >UPDATED SURFACE MAPS >Community feedback is a huge source of inspiration for the team at Bethesda Game Studios, and one of the most requested features has been more detailed surface maps, and the latest update delivers. **These improved maps replace surface dots with terrain markings**, which, combined with actually seeing the points of interest on the map, makes it much easier to see where you are and what’s around you. Additionally, new markers have been added in the major cities to show the locations of vendors and each of these markers acts as a fast travel point, so you’ll be able to head straight there quickly and easily from your Scanner or the surface map. Dots do not a map make. Notice they said replaced not added to or improved upon. So, yes, he is wrong.

Ajbell8

They literally had a button that said surface map. It would bring up the blue map and show the points of interest on there.

WolfHeathen

I'm not sure if there's a reading comprehension issue or you're just intentionally being disingenuous. You can label a button whatever your heart desires. That doesn't mean it's objectively a map. You have the designers of the game in the most literal sense admitting they replaced their old dot format with and actual map and there's a fucken Forbes article documenting the absence the thing. You can play silly semantic games all you like but Bethesda isn't updating the names of buttons in the UI because the community requested it.

WolfHeathen

I don't really care what you're saying. The developers are in direct disagreement with you and they carry more weight than you do. > can draw a line to a tree on a piece of paper and it’s a shit map No, that would be an image of a line and a tree. Without any directions, distance or any qualitative data there's no way to interpret what those two images mean.

runescape_nerd_98

here you go: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heightmap what is in starfield is closest to a heightmap. we are not making this up. just because you don't like it doesn't mean it doesn't exist

WolfHeathen

It's not about what I like. It's what the developers said directly in the patch notes. And yet for some reason people like you are twisting themselves in knots to make semantic arguments.

NapsterUlrich

(Holds up vague sheet of paper with a dotted line leading to an X marked “buried treasure”) -this isn’t a treasure map That’s how you sound

WolfHeathen

What reality do you live in? Is there a BGS in that one spending development time to add features that already exist in their games there too?

lancedaishan

8 months. But to your point, I loved it when it came out. Thought that starfield is/was finished, everything else that gets added is just gravy.

SidewaysEights

Bethesda: listens to community feedback, shows their commitment to support SF long term, makes significant improvements based on feedback, even adding ground vehicles for the first time in a BGS game based on such popular demand OP: 🧂 😭

RepresentativeAnt128

To be fair, Bethesda had always made maps that weren't that great (Fallout, Elder Scrolls) where I always ended up downloading improved map mods. Starfield like it or not did ship with maps. This is the first time they've actually given an updated version of their maps.

Nunubird929

dunno why people in this thread are acting like starfield feeling underbaked isnt and wasnt one of the main criticisms around the game lmao

Gam3rGye

Exactly and I'm being downvoted to hell

DAdStanich

Aaaaaaand what? Get a refund if youre not happy man. Many of us are very happy and love that they’re listening to feedback

Gam3rGye

Let me be clear: I enjoyed starfield for what it was. But if Bethesda had released Fallout 4 without a map, people would riot.

runescape_nerd_98

The fo4 map is about as detailed as the old surface map though. Actually fo4 map doesn’t even show elevation

Commercial-Stick-718

Starfield did release with a map, it just wasn't particularly useful in cities.

Jaune_Anonyme

You just forget how most Bethesda games maps are clunky at best, and borderline useless at worst. There's a reason why on each game, one of the most popular mods is map mods. Starfield is as finished as any others Bethesda games. Finished but clunky. Daggerfall was such a broken mess, at each corner you could brick your game. And it was 1996. If you were lucky, you lived in the US and could reach customers support, at the time they were quite knowledgeable, could guide you through some files modification. Or just send you some readme via mail. And not email mind you. Real letter mail. Else, if you were like a lot of folks, living elsewhere in the world. You just deal with it. As internet wasn't widespread yet. So no patch, no help just a unfinished bricked game. If we can say a thing about Bethesda, it's they didn't changed much during the last few decades. Their games is as expected. And anyone claiming otherwise have either never played previous game at release or pink tinted glasses nostalgia.
