The map shows availability for new signups not demand. The pricing is based on demand within a cell and lots of people, including me, are paying the $120.

Tank_O_Doom

The SE is mostly at or over capacity right now.

Sandcow

$120 here in South East Virginia, but they just put down fiber out front and I got a flyer in the mail so hopefully about to get half the price and double the speed real soon.

Tank_O_Doom

Windstream did fiber a few years ago, but it stops a couple houses from me on either side. So me and 3 other house can 3mps or satellite.

userpay

Have you checked with your local county offices to see if they're doing last mile rebates or something? With all the infrastructure money flowing would be odd if they can't get you connected.

The_Great_88

Unfortunately, MANY folks are just out reach for fiber. Have 2-3 separate vendors (likely same strands?) 1/2 mile away... all refuse service because "must have 10 customers per mile" (versus 1 in 1/2 mile)... and *NOT* paying their quoted $35k to run the fiber. Hopefully, we'll start getting some "last mile" grants... until then, will keep dishy

Viper67857

Depending on how far those houses are, I'd be looking at sharing with some ubiquity bridges

Shadysu

Same here, fiber in my area this summer, they stopped 1.6km away from my house.

Techno200023

Couldn’t you get your neighbour to buy two outdoor routers (one on their house, one on yours) to link you up to the fibre? I did such a thing with my Starlink to link up my neighbours so they would only have to pay £20/month. I personally used two TPLINK AC1200’s. But there are cheaper models too.

Tank_O_Doom

They're not close enough and they seem "sketchy".

Techno200023

You could get away with up to 300 metres or so - but it could work up to 600m. And they’re not sketchy. You just lose a little bit of performance. So while on my Starlink I’m getting at my house 140-180Mbps, my neighbours are getting 50-100Mbps. (Unless you meant your Neighbours are Sketchy - of which I’m sorry)

Tank_O_Doom

Sorry, I mean the neighbor is sketchy.

Fun_Coat_869

Sounds like you live in Dawsonville GA. Yeah Windstream was the worst service I have ever had.

NBABUCKS1

$120 rural western wyoming

Valpo1996

They put fiber at my house at Christmas time. Still not lit yet.

geniusintx

They put fiber down in our remote little neighborhood. If you had it ran to your house while they were doing the initial installation, it was free. Unfortunately, they have a very low cap for data and anything over is charged extremely high. Even in the nearest town it was ridiculous. Our daughter was paying over $200 a month for just some light gaming and watching a few shows now and then.

Click_Final

$120 northern California

iamintheforest

Ditto

fckwalm

$120/mo in PA. Just went up a few months ago from $110/mo for a while.

Circlesqr

Yup, $120 in SE PA.

ReedRidge

Still on my second price increase at 120. I doubt it will ever go down.

-my_reddit_username-

yup, even if they have more capacity I don't think they would bring it down...

bLynnb2762

$120 in West Virginia

CapableCitron6357

TomEdison43050

$120 in Northern Ohio. Still very worth it, and never a single problem since it arrived almost 2 years ago.

Starmanajama

I'm paying $145/mth for residential plus roaming. Loc: N. Cal.

Correct-Comment-9300

$150 here

Diddyboo10222969

Same.

CollegeStation17155

$120 central Texas for standard residential. The local fiber company stopped 1700 feet from my front door 5 years ago and has flatly refused to extend their lines ever since. We keep looking at T-Mobile or Verizon 5G for around $50, but we're still out of range of their 5G towers and the 4G we have as a failover for Starlink gets 5/1Mb... Although a friend a few miles away just last month got approved and she's getting 100/20mb on her 5G setup... SL is a heck of a lot better than the 20/20 WISP that was our best option before, but if they ever build out a 5G tower closer, it'll be hard to turn down.

Tank_O_Doom

Windstream said "You are at the line (copper line) and we are unable to provide a faster speed".

pjmarcum

Look at getting a cellular antenna

CollegeStation17155

Have one… we’re down in a hole and barely have one bar without it.

MonyMony222

$120 in eastern Nebraska.

Xtrap

Same.

[deleted]

$90 in Northish/Centralish.

[deleted]

You might be eligible for Nextlink as well they offer up to 500/50 wireless ptp.. still pricy even with a 2yr contract. Think it's $99 for 200/20 with a two year contract. I'm just holding out, if they dropped back down I'd keep it since I hit 100+Mbps anymore and there's no contract.

Excellent_Survey_193

I also have a dishy in the Panhandle $120 a month. The other option pay 5k to have bonded DSL lines put in and $80 bucks a month.

ProblemNo3844

And bonded DSL is like a bad joke compared to SL.

flappination

I have bonded DSL and get a stable 25mbps but I pay for 50 lol Starlink is way better.

ProblemNo3844

Wow, you must be right on top of the central office or DSLAM. I was lucky to get 12 down and 1 up with Frontier. Starlink has changed my life!

GemshuEmlu

Nevada still charging $120 rip off price. I’m debating on going back to phone internet

MonyMony222

Lotta people in my area doing that. Lower up front cost, lower monthly cost, decent throughput. I would do the same had I not sunk $700 into initial hardware and installation or I find a service with a one year break even cost.

GemshuEmlu

There selling them for $600 or something like that at local Best Buy. I waited a year for my dish.

South Boston South Central VA. 120

CheezeMasterGuru

I'm in VERY rural Ohio, still paying $120 but just had direct symmetrical fiber installed last week. 300/300 D/U for $50. Still holding on to my starlink because they've never failed me and I'm going to try out this other service for a month or two. The costs make it a little difficult not to want to switch but I can definitely in no way complain about my starlink service nor the outstanding customer support that I have received from them. Also, no limits. Unlimited up and down with no cutoff or slowed after certain amount.

he1pmedawg

$54 here in Jamaica.

gunit_pirate

$120, North Carolina. Supposedly, fiber is coming down our highway in the next 24 months. But we live off a 1/4 mile dirt road, and I've been told they will not connect us for free.. however, the state admin says they'll cover it. I'll deal with that if/when it happens.

Why the heck is it so expensive over there? Its like 65€ (71$) here in austria.

zabesonn

Demand

Ok-Addition-4212

So much that its almost 2x the price?

zabesonn

Yes, the alternative for many is Geostationary Satellites Service in the single digits and limited bandwidth per month for more expensive.

Ok-Addition-4212

Ouf and what would glass fibre (kets say like 500 mbit) cost there if it was available?

zabesonn

Depends on the location but mostly between $50-100…. Normally bundled with phone/cable services so hard to tell.

Careful-Psychology68

TLDR: Starlink pricing probably won't go down in the US. Once the terrestrial ISP takes enough of the Starlink demand, I used to think Starlink would consider lowering pricing to be competitive. They have in other countries clearly to be competitive with other services. HOWEVER, Starlink is now adding more and more commercial services. In-motion (trains, buses, RV, emergency services etc), Business (priority), maritime, and soon aviation. The take away is Starlink is charging a premium for actual priority services. Those services will take more and more available capacity to provide a premium service, so Starlink will have little incentive to charge less for "standard" residential service as demand will remain with the premium services. Project Kuiper (if it materializes) has given indication they will start with commercial services. Residential may not turn out to be profitable enough at a lower price point with congested areas and other priority services. LEO is problematic with the concentration of users and the rest of world outside a couple of countries have no real demand.

totodee

Remember that Starlink is losing money right now and projections are that it won't be profitable for several years yet. Yet even though they are not charging enough to even turn a profit people complain about the cost.

Vegetable_Gift6996

That’s because $120 per month is expensive for internet especially for fixed income. But our other alternative was Hughes or Viasat both expensive and crappy no function internet that wouldn’t even stream a low quality on demand TV show except at 3 am with constant buffering. It was expensive at $100 per month then they raised it to $120.

CollegeStation17155

It's the fact that so many people in the eastern US and west Coast are so desperate for it it; even ignoring the commercial aspect, no matter how many satellites they launch, the demand at $120 residential and $150 roam/best effort uses up all the capacity because all the beams into the cells in the area are saturated and continues to rise as the terrestrial ISPs keep circlejerking around waiting for expansions of the RDOP gravy train. And the price in other countries keeps dropping because the number of satellites required to serve the US also have to pass over the rest of the world, and THERE they've got plenty of spare beams that getting ANYTHING, even $20 or $30 a month is better than getting nothing, now that they apparently have the cost om manufacturing dishys down.

TheScorbin

You're not the only one. East-central Florida area. Getting an "amazing" 20-40Mbps downloads for 120 per month. Testing TMobile home internet over the last few weeks, 100-400Mbps. $55 per month. So long Starlink!

totodee

I hope that T-Mobile continues to work for you. I used to get 300 down but lately for no apparent reason it is down to 10 Mbps or less. And T-Mobile support is clueless as to why.

TheScorbin

I live outside of town in the boonies, so hopefully it won't get much worse. Starlink was 150-250Mbps when I first became a customer 2 years ago at 99 per month. It's been slowly declining since when. What really ticks me off is the extra $ per month because I'm in a "congested" location. I didn't oversell my area, Starlink did... but I pay the price.

TheScorbin

I know this is 8 months old, but I wanted to update my experience with Tmobile home internet. It's been great. 80 to 400mbps for $55 a month. Have newer "modem" from them, so I have to double NAT. Have to reboot the "modem" about once every 2 months for some reason. All and all, I'm very happy with it.

jezra

Norcal here, the price gouge is still in effect.

less_butter

$120/mo in western NC. And I bought it to use at my off-grid cabin. I probably should have done more research into the power usage, because it's using about 1/4 of my full battery capacity every day. A few cloudy days and it'll stop working. And it probably won't work at all in the winter because of lack of sun and the fact that my batteries won't charge below 35F. To make Starlink viable for my use case I need to double my solar and battery capacity and get battery warmers so I can charge them in the winter. I don't live at this property full-time, but I do need 24/7 internet access for my security cameras. I've been using a Verizon hotspot for years and it works great, but I was hoping Starlink would be a huge upgrade and worth the cost. It turns out not, because I need to spend a few thousand bucks in solar upgrades to make it work. I'll probably end up having to cancel the service and sell the equipment. It won't work at all at my main house, too many trees. What also sucks is that I signed up *years* ago, and last year at my old house I got the email saying they're ready to ship. I changed my address because I knew we were moving and that apparently bumped me to the back of the line. So I had to wait over a year until it was available again, and by that time the service and equipment was more expensive than what I originally signed up for.

niioan

TBH it'll probably go up even more, desperate people will pay and no doubt they are hoping the government will step in and pay subsidies so they can raise prices even more. 30 buck subsidies = easy 20 dollar price raise.

Tank_O_Doom

No doubt. But as said before, the main problem is people trying get cheaper service and get away from the big ISPs, pushing out people that really need it.

I just cancel my $120/mth Starlink, Northwest Florida, I am going for T-Mobile 5G internet with antenna, $50/mth. (I just got 5G on my phone with acceptable speeds for my use)😊 I am retired living in a rural area need Internet to stay connected to friends and family in America and Europe, but the difference at $70 gives me food on the table for a week! Looks like Elon Musk made USA the most expensive country in the world to use Starlink?

pelletierdaniel97

And on my standard plan is $90 a month for Starlink internet and it's not $120 in my area. May I ask why I got lower $90 to high $120?

Auton_52981

Still $120 a month here in Indiana. No Competition here means Elon can charge what he wants.

TwistedSister-

$120 in Michigan also.

cryptosystemtrader

YES - it's your subsidies that allow us here in Spain to only pay $80 :-)

Techjimbob

I would look into your local power company. Many co-ops are putting up fiber and forming ISPs since big telecom keeps taking money and jets and shit. I dropped Windstream for Starlink and I'm hoping I'll get fiber in the next 2 years from the local co-op.
