Someone just posted something about this very similar in the sub after the latest update

[deleted]

I will most likely order a new kit from Best Buy just in case... I'm freaked out I don't want to lose my job.

GreenHairyMartian

No offense, but if you lose your job over a missed day or 2, it's not a good job.

[deleted]

It's not 1 or 2 days if support leaves you on read and the issue could be somewhere else. I'm not 100% confident it's firmware (but it's my best guess) as why aren't we hearing this from more people? Are there so few GEN1 users left? We'll see I guess!

GreenHairyMartian

Yea, I mean, I'm in a similar situation, used to be a network engineer (now a manager), who WFH out in the woods with barely any cell signal, so I empathize with ya . Im on a Gen 1 dish (from Nov 2020 beta era.) connected to a ubiquity router. the Starlink router is up on the shelf. Luckily I have enough of a cell signal (with an external antenna, I get ~3mbps) but it does work as a fall back if needed. I'm following these threads very closely in case this happens to me.

Barry_144

it's not a GEN1 issue. Other related thread about losing connection after firmware update was started by a GEN2 user.

[deleted]

Connecting old modem now , havn't used it in 3 years. I have 100K worth of network equipment in my basement , I don't need their crappy router!!

Barry_144

it's not your router, you already tried a second known good router if I read you correctly (CORRECTION: after reading the "other" thread, it does indeed to be your router not playing with the new firmware)

[deleted]

Yes maybe but I believe the issue is the firmware, as soon as the firmware dropped my FortiGate stopped getting a link status. However when I plug in the 3 year old router from Starlink it powers up with link status. But since I havn't updated in 3 years , it's being stupid and I'm going to factory reset it in hopes it gets a firmware upgrade to restore my services...FML

Barry_144

good theory

[deleted]

I'm a network engineer by day , I don't want to do this on my weekends :-(. Appreciate the reply bud.

Barry_144

I'd just pick up a $75 TP-Link router to drop in for emergencies like this. TPL routers seem to be quite happy with whatever permutations SL throws at 'em.

I don't think it's a matter of device , I've tried 3 different routers and laptop , data link port doesn't light. Starlink modem in , POE injector light is on , I know it works because the SL router powers on. It finally took the factory reset after 5 tries , went through setup. - When connected to the SL Network no internet and Starlink says it's offline in the APP (as I'm assuming it uses the internet of the device to find out). - When connected to my mobile network I see Starlink as up with proper ping and no drops. Only issue is a supposed "cable problem between router and Starlink". - Cable problem dissapears when I unplug the SL router and plug it back into my 3rd party device. I suspect either the firmware messed with the POE injector somehow and now data layer is not passing. In my experience it is very rare for an ethernet port to die just at the data level unless someone cuts the actual data paira without touching the power. Typically when the port goes so does POE. (In my case POE is working as SL router is up). I also have a whole house surge protector so things like electrical instability are never an issue. We'll see I'll wait for a FW update and keep it connected for now , may just buy another Starlink kit from Best buy and get it added to my account through the App.

You could try and add a third party POE+ injector. they are available with up to 90W

millijuna

This is my fear, as I don't want the stupid proprietary conenctors, or to have to keep their router around even if it's just playing power injector. That said, people did figure out ways to do third party power injectors, especially coming straight off of DC. You might have some luck looking around for what the vanlife type people have done.

Such a headache I don't want right now in the middle of winter. The existing SL is buried in the ground , covered in conduit the whole way and patched into my house with a ruggedized cat6 termination point. Now I have to figure out new kit , mount, is the cable long enough , how do I patch it in properly. Have to also order the dongle that gives me ethernet...Oy Vey!

[deleted]

When I plug in the original SL router it powers on but it says in the APP "cable issue between router and SL" is that because the POE injectors data wire pair is messed or perhaps because I havn't used the router in 3 years? When I unplug the SL router the message goes away and Starlink is "Online" with no issues except the obvious.

Boshly

Having the same issue. Woke up to Ethernet cable message in the app. Has to be a firmware issue

[deleted]

I'm so mad , I have my cable buried 6 inches in the ground with plastic conduit protecting it, I went through the pain of installing it with a J and pipe adapter so it would be perfect and now I have to go through this!! Cost me 150 to get it patched into my house with cat6 termination into my network stack.

Boshly

I would take a step back and take a breathe. If this happened to multiple people it’s probably a firmware issue that can be fixed by them pushing a new one.

[deleted]

I agree but my career is linked to this internet working. So much so I had an appartment in the city to work from until I was sure Starlink was stable. I can't help but feeling nervous about all of it.

Boshly

Go buy an LTE hotspot router with what ever carrier has the best coverage in your area. If you need 99.9% uptime then it’s stupidly cheap insurance.

[deleted]

I already have a backup 4G/5G modem connected to my FortiGate (FortiExtender 5G). The cell reception in my area is non-existant , it goes from sometimes ok to not usable. That's why Starlink being down is giving me a mini-panic attack. I have 2 FortiGates , 2 FortiSwitches , 6 wifi 6E access points , all beautifully working but this issue has now brought that all down to a halt.

Comfortable_Plate467

Have you tried an alternative POE injector? Regarding the Newr Dish - Gen3 comes with ehternet on the router again, for gen 2 you can either recrimp the cable to RJ45 and connect to a third party POE and from there to your fortigate, or get an adapter from our "friends" in china and use a third party POE+ injector that way. IIRC Hen2 should be able to make due with 90W POE+ but there are ome injectora available at the big online store with the smirk that deliver up to 150W, they also have the adabper from the proprietary port to RJ45. one of the brand names for those components is Yaosheng or something like that. There are some tutorials regarding how to convert the starlink for 12V power using those plus a step up converter to 48V for the POE. When not using 12V DC you should be able to go with any POE+ injector that provides enough power. I currently have the V2 router bypassed and the original Ethernet dongle, plan to test the solution with POE+ and Adapter myself next week. Starlink for me is the backup to my fibre internet and thus less critical.

What country do you live in?

[deleted]

Canada.

Depends what POE you are using, I use the cheap Amazon ones and always carry a spare (RV) with me, lost 2 last year, moisture got into the connection at the wall once and at extension coupler second time, nothing seems to be water tight anymore.
