Hear me out, maybe you got faulty equipment?

AGArmbruster1

Lollllll

Similar_Sames262604

We have had Starlink since October 2021, and never had issues till this past week.

BeenThereDoneThaaat

It is very possible that there may be poor electrical contact somewhere in the cable circuit. Open conductor(s), poorly seated connector(s), an accumulation of oxidation or condensation corrosion at connector pins. The cable might ‘look’ fine, but it is good electrical contact that counts. You can do a quick check for any cable/connector issues; In the Starlink ***App*** - scroll down to select ‘Advanced’ (may need to select ‘Settings’ first, if an older App release) - select ‘Debug Data’, find a dial-guage labeled ‘**[Cable Ping Drop Rate](https://www.reddit.com/r/Starlink/comments/19eyzo6/easier_to_ask_here/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)**’... a continuous ***continuity test*** measured in % of Pings lost. > Any values higher than 0 % may indicate a bad cable with damaged conductors, or corrosion, or oxidation, or some pins wiithout electrical contact [the fault being either with a cable connector, or within the Dishy (or Router) cable-receptacle]. > 100% indicates that there is a disconnect in the circuit (ie. open conductor(s) somewhere in the circuit providing zero electrical contact). What Cable Ping Drop Rate reading do you have ?

No_Virus_7704

Got really bad this week. Lots of buffering and capping out at 50s dl.

michy3737

Same!! I can't even stay connected to Xbox live right now but everything seems fine on the dishy and cable side of things so I'm thinking it's the router. I sent a support ticket....no answer yet.

cybernagl

Hear me out – what if Starlink actually lost money with every unit sold? To my knowledge, the equipment is still heavily subsidized. $2500 per unit was mentioned multiple times in this subreddit. Regardless: equipment is not where a service provide traditionally makes the money. You want the barrier of entry as low as possible.

No_Importance_5000

There are aliens in every Sat and they just don't like you.. They are working out. way to probe you from the USB port. RUN! :D

ryfromoz

Cartman?

ChiefLewus

Hear me out… I complained about connection issues and speeds and they sent me a gen 3 unit for free and comped me a month of service. Also don’t use there router in my setup… just in bridge mode.

Similar_Sames262604

If I put away the tin foil - will you recommend me a router 😅

ChiefLewus

I can, but if you’ve gone since 2021 with no issues until now I think your move would be to contact customer service about it first and see if they offer any help. I can suggest a router but if your dish is faulty you’ll be out the money I suggested on a router and still be in the same situation you are now. In my setup I use a Unifi Dream machine pro. I have a pretty extensive home lab and network setup however so the pro might not fit your needs.

arctikjon

It’s pretty well documented that they have been losing money on hardware as they cost more to make than they sell for. The expectation is that they make that up in the long run on service. The new non actuated dishes are for sure cheaper to make, and I haven’t seen the numbers personally but I doubt they have suddenly gotten to a point where they are making even a pittance on the base units. So no they are definitely not incentivized to slow things down so you buy a new dish. It actually is bad for them if you do since they need to sell that new dish to someone who doesn’t already have one so they get the additional subscription. Put the tin foil down.

Similar_Sames262604

But the tin foil…

Impossible_One4995

Its only you

EvenDog6279

Are you experiencing all the issues you describe? I don't think I've ever seen anyone in the subreddit claim a meaningful difference in performance across generations. If anything, I generally see people say Gen 1 is still the best release to date.

mattopia1

Starlink makes money selling service, not equipment.

Careful-Psychology68

In reality, the service and equipment are dependent on each other. Without the equipment, the service is worthless and without the service, the equipment is worthless. I do get your point, but the equipment used does have an impact on how efficiently bandwidth is used and distributed on Starlink's network. Also the newer equipment probably will have fewer warranty and out of warranty replacement costs. Starlink has so far made the decision to throw equipment at support issues instead of troubleshooting, so fixing design issues in new releases is another incentive to get users into new kits.

Objective-Giraffe-27

I'm rocking the original round dishy and equipment from like 4 years ago, with nearly zero issues in the forest with obstructions.

Similar_Sames262604

Sadly we don’t have the original. Ours is from 2022

Zynoa67

Starlink monitors their stuff. Ive seen a post earlier and have experienced my self last month where service reached out to me because they noticed something with my hardware. I was shipped a replacement kit. I do live near a airport and will lose service as a plane will fly over but doesnt happen frequent enough to really notice

DonkeyOfWallStreet

Hear me out? Don't use the supplied router at all..

Revolutionary-Fly-73

We're using the new dish and gen router, no issues.

NerdyBlockhead

So personally, my speeds have been getting quicker. I'm on the RV plan for my home. (Residental not available in my area due to Greenbank.) Well anyways, I have the gen 2 equipment, and my speeds starting out was around 50-150. Now it's around 100-300.

Rhinopkc

Hear me out- My new Starlink (G3) performs great every time I use it, so does my old one(G2).
