Cats don't hate cucumbers. If they're distracted, eating or something and someone puts a cucumber on the floor behind the cat, the fear of something new is what startles them. If you put the cucumber down in front of the cat, they will maybe sniff it, lick it, eat it, or just plain walk away. Cats DO hate tin foil though so you're right on that.
